If you like Lee Child, Mark Dawson and Robert Ludlum, you’re going to find the Ryan Kaine series compulsively addictive.
#1 bestselling author with the US-based Lucky Shores romantic suspense series and the Ryan Kaine military action thrillers, and creator of the popular DCI Jones Casebook series of police procedurals, Kerry J Donovan was born in Dublin, before spending many formative years in West Wales.
Kerry earned a first-class honours degree in Human Biology and a PhD in Sport and Exercise Sciences. A former scientific advisor to The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, he helped UK emergency first-responders prepare for chemical and biological attacks in the wake of the 9/11 atrocities. This background adds a keen scientific edge to Kerry’s writing.
Kerry’s life experiences help him add an extra layer of realism to his stories and his characters. For example, readers will discover the water-borne adventures of his action hero, Ryan Kaine, a former member of the Royal Navy’s Special Boat Services, as authentic and exciting as a night-time dip in the Bay of Biscay.
As the owner of a “pristine” Honda NC750X, you’ll often find him touring the less well-known regions of Europe in search of interesting locations for his novels. A life-long sports enthusiast and open-water swimmer, the moment Kerry catches a glimpse of the ocean, it’s off with the bike leathers and on with his wetsuit.
A citizen of the world, Kerry recently returned from spending two decades living in the heart of rural Brittany and now lives with Margaret in a recently renovated bungalow in Nottinghamshire, UK.
When not writing, Kerry enjoys riding his motorbike, jogging, swimming, spending time with his four wonderful grandchildren, and travelling the world.

The action continues with Book 2 in the series, and starts straight on from the first.
The injured boy, Martin Princeton, provides the link to On the Run as the end of that novel saw Ryan Kaine pledging to redeem himself for the part he played in the shooting down of a plane which cost 83 lives. Martin’s brother was one of the victims and so Kaine feels duty bound to help him and consequently save his family from yet more heartache.
Martin Princeton lies alone and dying on a Scottish mountainside. A highly experienced rescue team can’t find him. One man is the boy’s only hope.
When news of Martin Princeton’s disappearance reaches international fugitive and former Royal Marine, Ryan Kaine, he abandons the evidence that could help clear his name and heads to the Scottish Highlands. Officially, the authorities want Kaine in custody. Unofficially, there’s a bounty on his head.
Still hampered by injuries from the events that turned him into the most wanted man in Europe, Kaine uses the heavy burden of killing eighty-three people aboard civilian aircraft Flight BE1555 to fuel his new mission. He will protect the grieving families, The 83, at all costs.
Armed only with charm and an intimate knowledge of the region, Kaine must convince the rescue team of his good intentions and find out everything he can about Martin’s disappearance before they discover who Kaine really is.
Using his mountaineering knowledge, his special forces training, and his rapport with the locals to help him find the missing boy in time, Ryan Kaine is … On the Rocks.
Two books read in the series and enjoying the character, and the authors pace, I wondered how he could bring a gripping story to this book, but he did, and you just cannot dislike Ryan Kaine, a tough character, but a fair good man.
Also some tough and amusing Scottish characters in this one.
Ryan Kaine: On the Rocks by Kerry J Donovan is the second book in the Ryan Kaine series and picks up where On the Run finished. Ideally it’s probably best to read the series in order but there are enough hints at the back story to make this novel work as a standalone. This is also helped by the fact that Kaine is on new territory with a new cast of characters.
Donovan builds the tension from the onset with the use of times and dates as chapter headings which emphasises the fast pace of the novel as the action takes place over a 48 hour period. What’s more the clock is ticking because a teenage boy is in peril and needs to be rescued before the elements take their toll on him.
The rescue mission takes him to the Scottish highlands where Martin has seemingly wandered off and become lost or worse.
The change of location injects the story with a renewed energy and the clash of cultures between the English interlopers and the local people provides lots of humour. The English characters, with the exception of Kaine, tend to be authority figures who have little respect for the locals or the difficult conditions that they will have to navigate. One such character is William (Buffalo Bill) Cody, head of an armed response unit who has been relocated from London due to his trigger happy approach.
There are references to characters from the previous novel but they play little part. Kaine is still hoping for a relationship with Lara Orchard who helped him in On the Run. She is being looked after by his friend, William “Rollo” Rollason while DCI Jones is working to clear his name. This novel belongs to the new characters, however, most of whom make up the mountain rescue team.
Iona McTay is a great female character, a tough no-nonsense doctor who goes out of her way to help Kaine. Her brother, Drew McTay, is a red-headed giant of a man with a good heart and strong moral code. Along with Gregor Abercrombie, the team leader, they form the heart of the rescue team and bring humour and warmth to what could otherwise be a harsh, violent, action story. The villains as I said are mostly the authority figures and Donovan offers a stark contrast between effective policing as represented by the officers on the ground simply doing their jobs and the careerists who don’t really care about anything other than how they look in the media and the impact this will have on their careers.
The main character is the eponymous Ryan Kaine, a 43 year old ex military officer. Despite the fact that he is tough and capable – if they were to make a film I envision Jason Statham – Donovan reveals him to be a kind, caring man who tries to do the right thing. He hates hurting people and mourns the loss of life, even if the individual may not deserve it. As he points out, “That’s someone’s son.” Early on in the novel Kaine defends a Sikh couple against a couple of racist thugs which puts him firmly on the right side of morality. Donovan maybe offers a wry political comment as the victim reflects how racism has intensified post Brexit.
Donovan chooses to write his novel in 3rd person which works extremely well as it allows for multiple viewpoints. Although the story is mostly from Kaine’s perspective we also get chapters from the members of the rescue team, Cody and Martin Princeton. This allows the tension to build as Donovan takes advantage of the fact that only Kaine and the reader are aware of his true role in the plane explosion.
I really enjoyed On the Run but I think On the Rocks is even better. Donovan is obviously a talented writer who takes his reader on an intense journey of both action and emotion. He seems to have settled into Ryan Kaine’s story so that the novel flows easily and engages the reader throughout. I can’t recommend this series enough if you enjoy action, adventure with a character who is not perfect but is willing to lay his life on the line for his beliefs.
Suspense at its finest, Ryan Kaine is a character you will love and cheer for. Ryan Kaine is on the run, and 'ON THE ROCKS' in this second book in this action-packed adventure series. This book was very difficult to put down; the suspense and intrigue kept me on the edge of my seat and where the charismatic Ryan Kaine has a choice to make, either continue to try to clear his name or to head for the Scottish highlands and use his skills to help find a missing teenager? The mysteries continue to unfold as suspects start to pile up and Ryan has to keep his eye on the prize and keep his backside out of jail. The author throws in a bit of romance, Scottish slang and beautiful descriptions of Scotland and lots of creative writing to make this another fabulous read for suspense and adventure lovers everywhere.
"I received an ARC of this book and voluntarily chose to review it."
On The Rocks might have been a good short story, but as a novel it failed. Too many words, not enough matter. The first third of the book was at least twice as long as it should have been. The remainder of the book seemed to go on and on and on until finally it ended. The one good thing I can say is that the excessive amount of words was at least literate, though many should have been omitted.
I enjoyed this book as much I enjoyed the first book in the series. While some thought there was too much mountaineering talk, I felt it wasn’t overdone, nor took anything away from the storyline. I enjoyed the characters in the book and will miss several. This was a good story, action-packed and I will definitely move on to the 3rd book. 📚
Another action packed Ryan Kaine thriller that takes off where Ryan Kaine On the Run ends. Kerry Donovan's descriptions of the Scottish highlands makes you feel that you are there alongside Ryan as he attempts to rescue Martin Princeton. Along with the action, intrigue, and moments of romance, the reader gets to see the very human side of Ryan Kaine, and just how much shooting down the flight with 83 souls on board has affected him.
If you have read the first Ryan Kaine book, this one is a must read. If you are new to the Ryan Kaine series you need to start with On the Run so that you will have the background to understand the why to this story.
I received an advance reader copy of this book and voluntarily chose to write a review.
The first chapter of this book is like a punch to the gut. It made me breathless. This was one of those books that I didn't want to end but the suspense had me reading quickly to find out more. Ryan Kaine is torn with guilt over the part he played in the deaths of the passengers on the plane he shot down. When he hears that the teenager brother of one passengers is lost in the Scottish Highlands, he had to go to help find him.
This book featured lean, tight writing with the perfect amount of character and setting descriptions. The beauty of the Scottish Highlands was brought to life. All I had to do was close my minds eye and I was there. This author is at his best with this story.
I received a copy of this book from the author but I am voluntarily reviewing it. I have no affiliation with the author.
Another excellent book featuring Ryan Kaine. He is on the run but can’t keep from stepping in to aid others. He is a quintessentially good man. He meets some good people along the way. And of course there is plenty of action and excitement to keep one flipping pages. I really enjoyed this story and I am glad things turned out the way they did. I am looking forward to Ryan’s next adventure.
This was an interesting book, and made me feel like I had to go further, no matter how late it was getting. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for an adventure.
My second book in this series. I’m a fan. Do read the first one (On the Run) before reading this one. It adds so much to understanding the motivation behind Ryan Kaine’s quest to atone for the tragedy he participated in. I like this guy. I want him on my side.
Ryan Kaine’s quest for redemption was an incredibly enthralling read.
From the tantalising characters to the many twists and turns this was an exciting welcome addition to the Ryan Kaine series.
Switching the perspective from England to Scotland was a brilliant change. Still holding on to the style and character of the previous setting while adding a new Scottish flair to keep the dynamics interesting and fresh.
The characters from the police, to the armed response to the rescue response team were a superb new set of characters for Ryan Kaine to tackle. It was great watching him attempt to adapt to a completely new set of characters not knowing whether they were friend or foe.
I really enjoyed the change in environment to the Scottish mountains. The author intimately described the setting in well detailed descriptions. Allowing the reader to visualise the mountain and understanding the peril the young student was in as Ryan Kaine navigated its treacherous terrain.
Seeing Lara reappear at the end made me smile, seeing Ryan achieve his happy ending. I can’t wait to see what he and Lara do next.
All in all this was an incredibly well detailed, welcome change in location in this series. I can’t wait to see where Ryan heads to next.
Following on from book one – Ryan Kaine: On the Run – Ryan is making a mad dash up to Scotland to help in the search for sixteen year old Martin Princeton, whose brother was a passenger on the doomed civilian aircraft. The events that transpired in the first book continue to take a heavy toll on Ryan, the guilt he feels is overwhelming at times which is why he’s determined to do all he can to see Martin safe and back with his parents. Martin has gone missing during a school camping trip in the Scottish Highlands and is in a desperate life and death situation.
Hunted by the police and with his picture in the press, Ryan does as much as he can to disguise himself, helped by the fact he had taken a beating which resulted in some facial disfiguration.
Ryan’s vow begins with Martin Princeton. And so, in the guise of Sergeant-Major Peter Sidings, Ryan joins the Lodge Farm Mountain Rescue Centre, hoping there’s no-one there who might recognise him. He’s a moral, considerate man who, although not technically to blame for the disaster that changed his life, still feels the full weight of guilt, responsibility and a need for reparation.
Kerry Donovan’s tightly plotted and twisty narrative is full of tension and action, with everything taking place over a two day period. A couple of characters from the first book make brief appearances but in the main it’s a whole new cast. Siblings Drew and Iona McTay are fabulously well drawn, and add a contrast to the severity of the story line. Both are tough and decent, in their element and sitting well in the rugged landscape. The wonderful highland setting, with its dangerous terrain, adds to the suspense and helped give one character in particular his just deserts. Emotions run high throughout, not least from the loose cannon heading the armed response team. I had no idea how it was all going to play out.
I always enjoy the more rounded picture that a narrative with multiple perspectives gives and, although the majority is from Ryan’s point of view, we do get other characters’ viewpoints. Kerry Donovan continues to impress with engaging writing, great plotting and characterisations. Looking forward to the next adventure with Ryan Kaine.
I was completely mesmerized by Kerry Donovan’s first book in the Ryan Kaine series. It left me panting with the exertion of reading it, so of course I had to read the sequel. I hope this is a long series. Ryan Kaine on the Rocks was slower paced (but only slightly) from the first book and is a more than worthy continuation, since it picks up where the first left off. Kerry Donovan is in his element. He clearly knows the Highlands, where the book is set, and its people and has an intimate knowledge of mountain climbing and rescue. His descriptions of the area are compelling – I could feel the wind and the rain – but the author never loses sight of the plot and shoves the story forward at an exhilarating pace. You are never unaware that the clock is ticking, both for the boy Kaine is seeking and for Kaine, who has to keep his butt out of jail while engaged in the search. Once again, his characters are fun, even the really bad ones. The clashes between the locals and the English armed response team which arrives to take over the search are both humorous and confrontational. How could you not like a villain named William (Buffalo Bill) Cody? Donovan writes good, tight dialogue for these characters, spartan almost, but smooth. This is escapism at its best, and once again, my only minor complaint is that at his age, Kaine is nearly superhuman in his strength and ability to endure pain. I will admit I got slightly lost in the descriptions of the mountaineering and climbing gear, but I’m sure aficionados of this sport will have no complaints. So, I’m again looking forward to the next Kaine outing, and I rate this book up there with the best in its genre. What a fun, breathless read!
Book two in the almost indestructible, yet oh so human Ryan Kaine series - righter of wrongs, defender of the weak, and all round 'good egg'. This is an excellent exciting story that follows on immediately from book 0ne, but which has enough detail from that within it to be able to be read as a standalone. The Cairngorms in Scotland are the location for the action this time, and they and the local characters salient to this story are very well drawn and brought vividly to life, but it was also nice to have well liked friends from the first novel make their appearance. Tense action, a decent villain, overwhelming guilt and the need to atone, and the need to stay under the official radar until the truth will out, coupled with the spurious and false accusation of being a terrorist proved false, mean that I have no hesitation in recommending this book, and will most certainly be reading book 3.
This I should say interesting as well as satisfying book. When I finished the first book I thought how can you create a story with just finding a boy who is lost on a mountain given that he is a wanted person of interest everything taken into account. But when i started to read this book I was fascinated not because of the narration or the story telling aspect of the book but also the information they have given regarding mountain climbing is awesome. I never expected Kaine to go to the rescue centre to volunteer himself for the rescue operation. I thought he would have gone separately which given his situation will be useful for him also so that nobody can identify him. To cap it all in the end, those ARU squad was amazing. Still not fully in the clear Kaine atleast that what I think waiting for the third book.

This was another excellent and exciting Ryan Kaine story. Following on closely from the previous adventure, this one sees Ryan in the Highlands of Scotland trying to find and rescue Martin Princeton who has gone missing during a school trip in the dangerous mountainous region. Filled with guilt for causing the death of Martin’s brother, Ryan is determined that he will Martin and return him safely to his parents despite the fact that he is still being hunted as a terrorist. The plot is full of fear, danger and gripping cliffhangers which kept me on tenterhooks, unable to put it down. This series is definitely a must for anyone who likes action with a touch of humour and plenty of excitement.
This is the 2nd book in the series and I would say you really need to read the first book before reading this one to understand the back story. The first book was full of action and very fast paced. In this one Ryan Kaine travels to Scotland in an attempt to save a boy who fell in the mountains. He is the brother to one of the victims of the disastrous airplane explosion from the first book. The whole story is around this. As a suspected terrorist Kane gets into some difficult situations and with an armed police crew looking to shoot him, will he make it off the mountain, will he rescue the boy? I don’t think this book was as good as the first, but it was still a reasonable read. I’ll read a third in the series, if there is one. 4.5 out of 5.
I could not find another series of books in this genre that I loved as much as I do the Jack Reacher series, until I came across Ryan Liam Kaine. Even his names cool, Ryan took a horrendous beating by guy who worked for the man, responsible for killing an aeroplane full of innocent people. Whilst he was serving him up to DCI Jones, he heard that the brother of one of the victims had gone missing in Scotland, with the guilt eating away at him, Ryan raced up there to help find him, even though there were trigger happy officers who would love to take him down. If you love Jack Reacher you will defiantly love this series too
When circumstances demand it, he can spin yarns with the best of them. The second book about Ryan Kaine builds on the situation in On the Run. The detailed information about mountaineering and mountain rescue was impressive, adding to the drama. I enjoyed finding out if Ryan and Lara’s relationship could develop further, despite the pressures of the former’s dramatic life. The only thing I disliked, which might be simply seen as tongue in cheek, was the description of some Scots. However, since it could be seen as highly disrespectful, by others, I have docked one star.
Wow !!! Action packed !! Lots of twists and turns to the story.... Totally loved it !! Still a little lost in all of the vernacular and local (England \Scotland ) jargon, but I think I followed it better this time. Also, the descriptions of several words and phrases were more readily available I think. All in all , A great book that I devoured like a welcome treat !! I am not used to spending as much as these books are, ( 99 cents or Free girl right here 😃😃) , but will gladly figure out a way to get the next in this series !!! I am HOOKED !!!
Ryan Kaine is a “Boy Scout” trained by the SBS. (The British version of American SEALS.......”but with more wit...and style”) This book continues the story of the previous book. Set in Scotland, it crackles with the tension between Kaine’s complicated legal status in England and his desire to help rescue a lost teenager. The author is clearly knowledgeable about technical climbing, which plays a large role in the story. He also portrays what appear to be ethnic tensions in the region that I, as an American, was unaware of. His use of dialects is first rate.
Ryan is at it again in this great follow up in the series. Here he is heading to Scotland to make amends for his innocent mistake in shooting down a plane. One of the dead passengers has a brother who is missing in the Cairngorms. Ryan wishes to help but this is going to create problems. The author really does give us a good descriptive narrative making it feel as if we are there. Loved it!
This was a good read. Lagged a little in some places, but the suspense build up was good, to see how on earth was Ryan going to survive the mess he’s in…if he’s able to beat the odds. After coming off another really excellent series of 12 books, it takes a very good book to redirect my attention. I am definitely convinced, however, after reading this, that I will not be learning to climb mountains!
It’s been a very long time since I read a book I “could NOT” put down! This book is that kind of story. Extremely well written suspenseful on almost every page even until the end. I have a new hero in Ryan Kaine! This story from the first page until the last held my attention like no other book I have read in a very long time. With the exception of the language throughout it has become my favorite read “in years”!
If you want adventure and danger along with a healthy dose of humour, then you must read this. On the run from rich men and Government agents, Ryan Kaine lives to protect the families whose loved ones died in a plane downed by a missile. Although Ryan shot the plane down, his military bosses told him he was testing the missile on a Company drone. Having dealt with his bosses, the guilt drives him to become a protector.
I enjoy the premise of this series. Some people known Kaine's predicament, others not. I enjoyed this setting and how it was made an integral part of the plot. Unlike the first in the series, Kaine is not as much a Superman, just someone trained to do what he was doing. The storyline was well paced and the secondary characters were very good. They became a valuable part of the action. Well done. A 4.6 out of 5 rating.
Another excellent adventure with Ryan Kaine as attempts to atone for tragedy that took the lives of passengers on a commercial flight. This endeavor will take all of his skills to accomplish the mission and survive. Put me done as a fan of Ryan Kaine and of course, author Kerry J Donovan and the equally exciting audio performance by Gilbert Jackson. -Mr.Bill
This second Ryan Kaine book moves quickly with many intriguing characters. Ryan fights evil on several levels in two countries. His love interest, Lara, is full of stamina and drive and won't take no for an answer. A satisfying read full of interesting details and adventures..I highly recommend it!
Finding Mr. Donovan & his wiley Ryan Kaine has saved me from a winter of certain book boredom. I've just completed reading book 2 in the series & can truly say I think the only thing that'll really make me happy is if this series lasts 4ever. What a kick! I'm Absolutely hooked👍✔️⭐
Action never stops, fast paced, mountain climbing experience necessary, how one man can get involved with all that takes place In this relentless drama that seems to surround him on a daily basis — is beyond belief, However, you really don’t have to think about what happens next It just happens!
