Diplomatic history explores the management of relations between nation-states by the process of negotiations. Bush and the Iraq War, and diplomacy in the age of globalization, the management of power relationships has had an immense impact on our recent history. This Very Short Introduction updates the former Diplomacy: A Very Short Introduction and illustrates international diplomacy in action, exploring the changes in method at key historical junctures, and highlighting the very different demands that circumstances make on the practice of diplomats. Drawing on the case studies above, it makes sense of the way in which skillful diplomacy, as well as hubris, rashness, and excessive caution, can have important ramifications for the fate of nations. Based on the experiences of diplomatic history, it also locates the universal role of negotiations and identifies the key elements of success. As Joseph M. Siracusa shows, diplomacy was and is an indispensable element of statecraft, and without skillful diplomacy political success may remain elusive.

Joseph Siracusa is Professor of Human Security and International Diplomacy, and Associate Dean, International and Justice Studies at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. A native of Chicago and long time resident of Australia, he is internationally known for his writings on international diplomacy. nuclear weapons, and the Cold War.

.كُتب المقدمة أغلبها صعبة للقارئ "السطحي"،كُتب أكاديمية ولقراءة المقدمات أنت في حاجة لخلفية تاريخية، جغرافية، سياسية.وإلخ..والحمد الله الحظ كان معي في الكتاب هذا..موجز قصير عن تاريخ دبلوماسية وتطورها، تحدث عن الدبلوماسية الثورة الأمريكية ، والأصول الدبلوماسية للحرب العالمية الاولى ومعاهدة فرساي، الكاتب كان مُنحاز في سرد الأحداث من ناحية عدم حديثه عن أصل الدبلوماسية وغيرها،لكن هذا مش هام لأنه المقدمة كانت ذات فائدة لدخول في عالم كيسينجر داهية الخارجية الأمريكية ومواقف الدبلوماسية وأسس التعامل بها، وبهكي قررت نفوت الطب ونتخصص علاقات الدولية والدبلوماسية شىء كبير ياعمري، وين ماتلين عرف الدبلوماسية بأنها فن انتقاء المعسول من الكلام إلى أن تجد حجارة تقذف بها." وأيضًا لاحظ جون ستيوارت مِيل أن قيمة الدولة على المدى البعيد هي قيمة الأفراد الذين تتكون منهم، وبتحوير الجُملة أعتقد أن قيمة الدولة تعتمد كُل الإعتماد على قيمة الدبلوماسين ، وانحطاط دولة مع مرتبط بعمل وزارتها الخارجية … .

Well written book but less than the title promises it to be. It does not explore diplomatic tactics or theories but provides an historic look at some incidents where diplomacy occurred

Reading about the actual workings of diplomacy while living in an area and era that lacks it is not an easy task. The bulk of the book is devoted to the evolution of American diplomacy after the First World War and Second World War and its implications on the international community. The procedures of diplomacy resemble chaos theory: small changes somewhere can have larger effects elsewhere.
The author of the book has done an excellent job, summarizing the intricate and interconnected web of diplomacy in a short introduction bringing to the readers, leaders who have reshaped the political map of the world. The book, however, needs a chapter on the amateur politicians who run countries and enter into agreements without knowing the alphabet of diplomacy

يعنى كلمة بشع هتبقى شوية عليه ....شوية أحداث تاريخية مش معروفة حتى وبيناقشها ....
ع ان المفروض ان ده دليل استخدام سلبى او إيجابى للدبلوماسية .......

كل اللى اتذكر انها اتفاق بين طرفين او اكتر بهدف تحقيق كل طرف اكبر مصلحة لنفسه والطرفين ع اتفاق
طب ايه الأساليب بقى للدبلوماسية دى؟؟ ايه التكنيك اللى بيتم بيه تطبيقها؟؟

كل اللى اتذكر شوية معلومات تاريخية مجهولة ف قلب حدث تاريخى مهم وليكن اتفاقية ما بين دولتين ايام الحرب العالمية الاولى او التانية مثلا ....طب وضح بقى ايه استخدام الدبلوماسية فالموضوع هنا !!!

دا جايب تفاصيل متعمقة للغاية بشكل ممل جدا وكأنه متحددله عدد صفح عايز يملاه وخلاص

والكاتب مش واخد باله تقريبا ان ال series اسمها very short **introduction** يعنى مش بحث هو ولا كتاب لدارسين سياسة دى تعريف للعامة بالمفهوم ...ازاى يبقى بالشكل ده يعنى !!

كتاب مُمتاز يعطيك ثقافة لا بأس بها في موضوع الدبلوماسية، مُقسم إلىٰ ثلاثة أقسام تقريبًا :

1- تعريف وتاريخ الدوبلوماسية.
2- دبلوماسية عملية في ثلاثة موقف وهما أمريكا والأستقلال عن بريطانيا، تشرشل والحرب العالمية الثانية، ومشكلة أستراليا مع أمريكا.
3- الدبلوماسية في عصر العولمة.


الدبلوماسية = مفاوضات بين دولة ودولة، يُمارسها وزير في حالة كان مكان البعثة مفوضية أو سفير في حال كان مكان إقامة البعثة في الدولة الأخرى سفارة.

أفضل تعريف عامي ليها :
فن أنتقاء الكلام المعسول، إلى أن تجد حجرًا تقذف به.

أنواع الدبلوماسية 2 :
عامة مع المواطنين وتتبع سياسة دول السفراء، ورسمية مع الحكومات فقط وتتبع سياسة الحكومة طبعًا.

تكلم عن المعاهدات وأجابني على سؤال سألته لنفسي كثيرًا، كيف تنتهي المُعاهدات أو تفسخ :
الأجابة كانت إما أنها محددة بوقت، او الظروف تتغير أو عن طريق إخطار من الدولة المسحوبة.

الثلاثة وقائع أمثلة ثرية عن الدبلوماسية. وكيفية القيام بها.

الفصل الأخير بيتكلم عن سياسة الشركات متعددة الجنسيات، بيتكلم عن منظمات المجتمع المدني وغيرها.

كتاب رائع جدا .. ينصح به طبعًا ..
تقييمي 3 لأني لسه هرجعله تاني وخصوصا الفصل الأخير.

It is definitely an interesting read but I am not sure it can be called a book. Looks more like a first draft of a book. Chapters seem unrelated and no verbal attempt is made to explain the link.

كتاب جميل ومختصر يشرح الدبلوماسية مع ذكر وقائع تاريخية تبين كيف كانت الدبلوماسية والمخاطبات تتم بين الرؤساء والوزراء حتي وضع المعاهدات وإعلان استقلال الدول من أمثلة الثورة الأمريكية الي معاهدات ما بعد الحرب العالمية الأولي مثل معاهدة فرساي ومثال كيف انتزعت الدبلوماسية الأسترالية توقيع معاهدة الأمن مع الولايات المتحدة .

This book was overall quite dry and made the intriguing subject of international diplomacy rather boring… quite a feat for a book of just over 100 pages. It doesn’t even really talk about diplomacy itself, just lists several completely independent chapters that describe historical events from a diplomatic perspective.

Oddly enough, the chapter on World War 1 diplomacy was a completely different tone, and I found it very interesting and well-done. The chapter immediately after discussed the Cold War division of Eastern Europe. I had high hopes for this as well, but it was little more than a very long chapter that spliced together dozens and dozens of direct quotes from letters and communiqués in dreadfully dull fashion.

The chapter on the ANZUS treaty was somewhat interesting, but still suffered from overused quotations spliced together. More importantly, it was a curious way to spend over a dozen pages in such a brief book; the treaty was undoubtedly important to the author as an Australian, but seems overshadowed by many other events that could have much better demonstrated diplomacy.

Finally, the chapter on globalization focused almost exclusively on the UN’s Millennium Goals as the end-all of international diplomacy in the modern world, which is laughable considering how irrelevant and impotent the UN has proven to be.

Overall, I would have given this book 1-2 stars except for the excellent chapter on WW1, which showed what I hoped this entire book would be like. Unfortunately, it falls far short of even a basic introduction to diplomacy.

For readers who want an introduction to diplomacy that is actually fascinating and exciting, I recommend Kissinger’s “Diplomacy.” Whatever one thinks of the man himself, he has a great way of making the subject intriguing, although it focuses exclusively on Western Europe and American diplomacy, to the exclusion of the rest of the world.

يتناول الكتاب اهم المواقف الدبلوماسية التي اثرت علي العالم و علي مصير الشعوب خاصة اثناء الثوره الامريكيه و اثناء فترتي الحرب العالميه
و يشرح الكتاب ماهية الدبلوماسيه و تأثيرها علي الشعوب و تأثير المعاهدات و الاتفاقيات علي مصير الشعوب و مصير العالم و الدول
لم اكن اتخيل ان اسباب الحروب العالميه اسباب دبلوماسيه و اسباب الثورات و الفقر و الجياع اسباب دبلوماسيه قبل ان تكون عجز موارد

The book is a disappointment. I expected some clear ideas about what diplomacy is, including some clear examples about it with highlights. But the book was extremely short for my expectations. It was my first book of the "Very Short Introduction" series; I hope that others books from that list, that I have marked as "want to read", meets my expectations.

The book basically outlines the evolution of diplomacy as an art of statecraft and changes occurred in the globalising era, The language is easy and simple. The writing seems to be eurocentric, as it entirely ignores the history of diplomatic envoys in ancient China, India and Africa.

Basically pointless book. A history of a few specific diplomatic systems (US Revolution, WW1) but only very superficial information about the diplomatic-specific aspects, just a mediocre cursory overview of the historical events themselves. Also annoying as audiobook due to grating narrator.

A nice short read about globalization and the changes of diplomacy through out history. Starting with WWI, WWII, and the Cold War, leading up to the modern days, the book goes in depth about how diplomacy was used to avoid or wage wars and disputes.

It made a lot of relevant and valid connections across history in different parts of the world. Diplomacy is a fascinating topic that is so riveting and dynamic.

Clearly, my expectations of these Very Short Introductions is way off par — as I said with the American Foreign Relations, this book may as well be titled “Diplomatic History Beginning with Bismarck, with Special Focus on America and Her Machinations in the Middle East.” I was expecting a full diplomatic history of the world, I don’t know beginning with Thucydides and the Peloponnesian War perhaps? WRONG. Not one mention of ancient Greek and/or Roman diplomacy until the very last paragraph of the book, provided as an anecdote to the previous paragraph covering the world’s impending nuclear disaster.

I thought the breakdown of chapters was very odd, as Siracusa focuses so narrowly on diplomacy by major powers’ heads of state: Churchill and Stalin’s letters over the course of a few weeks were given way too many pages in my opinion, along with the UNSC’s struggle with the U.S. invasion of Iraq. Why so hyper-focused? I think I was expecting this to be about diplomats and foreign ministers as an entity of foreign relations themselves, not just a fixation on a few of the major diplomatic crises of the last century. This is probably the last Oxford VSI I’ll be reading. I wanted to like it, I truly did.

نجح الكاتب وببراعة بإيجاز معنى الدبلوماسية وإن كان على حساب التفصيل، انتهج مقاربة تختصر معنى الدبلوماسية في التفاوض بين الدول ، وارتكازها على مهارات ممارسيها. وهذا ينطوي على تعريف الدبلوماسية انها علم وفن.
لاشك ان المؤلف اجتهد في تبيان معنى الدبلوماسية ولكنه اجتهاد لا ينسجم مع كون الكتاب مقدمة قصيرة لقارئ مبتدئ.
استمتعت في الأمثلة التاريخية كمعاهدة فرساي وتفاهمات تشرشل وستالين بخصوص البلقان وغيرها. والأمثلة التاريخية جاءت في سياق تعريف الدبلوماسية انها عملية تفاوض .

كتاب ممل جداً .. مليء بالحشو التاريخي الذي ليس له علاقة بعنوان الكتاب .. فالمفترض ان يورد تاريخ الدبلوماسية و كيفية تطورها و انواعها و أساليبها لا تاريخ الحروب العالمية و ذكره لتواريخ و معاهدات و رسائل بين رؤساء الدول الكبرى لا تمت للموضوع بصله .. لم يعجبني الكتاب ولا أنصح به

كتاب جميل . يشرح سير الاحداث في اروقة الساسة
كما يبرهن تشتت اوروبا وتمزيقها لنفسها لقرون ليست قبيل الصدفة بل انها من سنن الاكوان . لابد ان يتصارع العالم على السيادة .
