Tsukuji, Akihito (つくし あきひと) is a Japanese mangaka. He has works in Fairy Musketeers (TV) as a character designer, and is the original creator of Made in Abyss, a fantasy and adventure manga.
A lush, fantastical world brought alive by incredible INCREDIBLE art woWEE! Although I like cosmic stuff generally, in the case of Made in Abyss, as it started going down that route, it became increasingly muddled, cluttered and kind of boring (especially the golden city and Faputa arc). Lost interest in continuing this series.
The bottom line is: it's gruesome. I think the shock of volume 9 prepared me for the cruelty and despair that the next books will bring; we knew this from the beginning, how dark and twisted the lower layers would be. The punishment for ascending layer 6 is, literally, "Loss of humanity". We haven't even GOTTEN to "Certain death" as the final punishment. This is not the worst of it.
Tsukushi has no mercy: he is brutal in some ways that make sense given the nature of his twisted abyss creation, and some ways that are unnecessary and messed-up on his end.
I'm glad I didn't give up after volume 9. I will keep reading the series. I'm intrigued by the abyss, the lore, its mysteries. You just...can't go into this unprepared.
Anyways so glad faputa is gonna go soul searching yasss queen princess mommy issues YOU define YOUR value slayyyy<33
I'm really going to miss some of these characters we've gotten to know over the past few volumes. I know deep down, I had to expect Riko & Co. would have to leave them behind at some point--if nothing else, they can't survive outside of the city. But I'd grown fond of Maa, and Moogie, Majikaja and that little cyclops girl who it seemed like Tsukushi was trying to build up into something more than a background character. It's sad to see them go.
But after a difficult and complex confrontation, it's time to move on to truly uncharted territory. It's going to take some time to adjust to getting back to adventure mode, after so much time spent in one place, yet I can't deny wanting to find out what lies ahead.

Just like in the anime, this story goes straight to the heart. The story of the golden city with Faputa, Iruumyui and the saints is awful, gut-wrenching, cruel and sad. The emotions and reflections that these stories evoke are overwhelming. And then the innocence and sweetness of the positive feelings and intentions of our crew, it is such a bittersweet mix.
Truly love this series, and also love the soundtrack that Kevin Penkin made fore it (yes all three albums are compositional masterpieces with a lot of emotion in them).
The best and worst of what the series has to offer. Faputa and Reg need to calm it down. Also please stop ripping off the limbs of these children. But really interesting discussions on sacrifice, both that is chosen and that which is forced upon us, what is vengeance and repentance, who counts as family, and the values of comforting ignorance vs harsh truths. Things better end well for these kids or so help me.
A great story and manga, or would be if not for the fact that the author is a full p*d*ph*le. The manga features some disturbing and/or gross depictions of children right in your face from time to time (which, in case anyone wonders, do not add anything to the deeper meaning of the story and come literally out of nowhere). Do not read if not ready to scroll past such imagery, and please do not buy. A censored version is available on reddit.
If it's not the consequences of the consequences of other's people actions that are the consequences of a fucked world.
This ends this arc, in a very dark, violent way. And yet, the ending is hopeful, and it's those moments contrasted to all the bad happening that make Made in Abyss worth reading.
this has been a problem with the last volumes as well, but I thought i'd point it out since it was really noticeable this time - so much of the action was hard to make out due to the art style. so it is super easy to get lost mid-battle. anyway, great end to faputa's arc and I'm so glad we are finally moving away from the village of the hollows.
Its interesting how unoriginal some of the storytelling has been (Faputa arc been done before) yet i am thoroughly hooked all the way through. Its also interesting how sad it is throughout and still hopeful at the end.
I finished this manga in less than one day. I can’t believe it and it was so painful. The art is amazing as always and I found this volume less disturbing than the previous ones (but it’s only my opinion of course) and I can’t wait to read the next one. I’m so excited!
About: Faputa faces off with beasts that invade the city she intends to destroy
Review: The first half is good with the fighting, but then it kinda got confusing... I'm glad we're moving on from this area. I want to know what happened to Lyza.
Made in abyss continues to break my heart and leave me in awe. At the end of this arc, I’m left hopeful and with despair at the journey our main character are about to continue
