Imogen Gray #2

Immortal Games

Rate this book
Immortality sucks.

Just ask Imogen Gray: Over two-hundred thousand years old and teetering on the edge of total insanity. Strong as a shifter, faster than a vampire, Imogen's walked the earth forever, always alone, never growing, never changing.

Never learning, either. Her smart mouth and quick temper get her into trouble far too often.

When that happens, she gets hurt. Sometimes, very badly, and it can take a long, painful time to heal from severed limbs and disembowelment.

She's tired of it all. So tired.

Imogen's on a mission to find the next reincarnation of her father, the only person in the world who knows how to complete the transition to human, and get rid of the curse of immortality.

He must know, because he did it himself. He wasn't human when she was born – he was something else. But he died a human, and he keeps coming back to experience human life, again and again.

He's here in Emerald Valley, somewhere, hiding amongst the eccentric locals, or hobnobbing with the billionaires that visit the Vampire King's country club up on the western ridge. She just has to find him.

But when her delinquent teenage ward accidentally summons a powerful Fae Prince through the portal, suddenly, finding her dad has to take a backseat. There's a homicidal maniac on the loose, one who has his eyes on the Vampire King.

Her Vampire King.

Worse than the burning jealousy is the fact that the Fae Prince seems to know exactly what she is.

Immortal Games is Book Two in the fun, fast-paced Urban Fantasy series. A slow-burn romance, it includes a diverse cast of characters, shifters, witches, fae, cryptids and more.

Imogen starts grating on my nerves in book 2. She’s supposedly 200,000 years old but makes stupid decisions repeatedly. And everyone loves her because she smells “other.”

I didn't expect this when I started this series. I really like the series. A plus is that the story is finished at the end of the book no cliffhanger. I love it, when an author can write a story and I want to go on with it even though there is no cliffhanger there.

Each of the two books I read has the same characters and also some new. I enjoyed that in this urban fantasy alle the sups are interwoven and have to work together putting aside feuds or prejudices. They do have them but it still works.

In this part some side characters do stay side characters but get bigger roles. Secrets surface, but even if the person thinks that the secret is bad, turns out it is helpful too.

I'm going back to read the next part of the series.

absolutely loved it. I just love reading as she changes and grows into loving others and becoming a parent to Leroy. There where several parts that made me laugh out loud so that makes for a really good time. I can't wait to read the next one now.

I was so happy to return the crazy, messed up world of Imogen Gray. This second book in the series is even better than the first! Imogen is such a fantastic character, and I absolutely love her relationship with Raphael, the vampire king.

We get to see more of Raphael as well; he is so lovely! and Imogen’s jealousy around him is so funny. There are many light hearted moments in this story. I love her irreverent snarkiness around Raphael, and her attemps to be a good parent for Leroy.

Imogen has found friends. Her usual icy facade has cracked and she has allowed mortals to inveigle their way in, and she is feeling things she hasn’t allowed herself to feel in aeons.

Hignett creates a plethora of magical creatures who continue to accidentally fall through the portal, and the way Imogen overcomes them is hilarious! I loved the banana and the tupperware container!

This book is so entertaining and it just flows. You will read it much faster than you realise. Can’t wait for book three!

There is a content warning but personally I didn’t have any issues : Occasional coarse language, sexual references and drug references. No explicit sex scenes. Content note for suicidal thoughts.

Now that Imogen has stopped the blood witch’s attempt to rule the world, she is still in town looking for her reincarnated father. While she’s looking, she is “helping” Father Benson and his quest to clear the town of demons and monsters. She is also making friends for the first time.
Unfortunately, a spell by Leroy goes wrong and a Fae comes through the rip and won’t leave until he’s had a wild time, starting with trying to seduce Raphael. He also gives away some information about Imogen’s father although that doesn’t really help her.
There is a fair amount of action, humour, danger, romance, creatures, great characters and interactions.
This is a fun, quick, easy read and I loved it all. After my doubts in the first few pages of book 1, this has definitely caught my attention.

In this book, Imogen learns a bit more about her origins thanks to an infuriating fae prince, who wants a "good time." He sets his sites on Rafael, but Imogen is having none of it. That causes the fae prince to prank his way around Emerald Valley. Imogen and her friends have to work to not just get rid of the prince but to survive.

I read some reviews that say that Imogen is too immature for being over 200,000 years old. I do agree with that, but it seems to me that until the events in this series (the prequel included), Imogen was coasting through life, just trying to figure out how to end it. Now Leroy, Marigold, Rafael, and the rest of her friends have woken her up, and she's starting to care about the consequences of her actions or inactions.

I'm looking forward to continuing the series to see how Imogen continues to grow.

There were a few things that annoyed me like the amount of repetetive info, dialogues etc and some very irritating situations because of some missing facts
but I just love the story, the worldbuiling, the characters and the overall writing.
It's funny, exciting and entertaining

This story follows Imogen Gray and her journey to reunite with her reincarnated father. Imogen is the best worst main character. She is selfish, rude and lacks basic empathy but also hilarious. After a run in with a Blood Witch Imogen becomes the unlikely guardian of spunky preteen boy. Armed with the knowledge of the location of her father and of her worst enemy the head to that very spot. That spot that town harbors a portal that occasionally spits out monsters, a shifters boarding school, witch apothecary and the vampire king. Will be the place where they make their last stand against the literal forces of darkness. I really loved Imogen I personally identify with her bluntness. It takes a special kind of person to tell the vampire king to get out of your way before you hit him with a car. I loved the connections that she made with these people that she would have left in her dust before. One of the best scenes is that in both book 1 and 2 the day was always saved by the most unlikely person. I would whole heartedly recommend. The only thing I did not enjoy is that book 3 isn't available yet.

This book had Imogen falling off my favorite character list. She fell into the pit that many promising heroines do, she let her jealousy and "desire" control her actions and cloud her thinking. All of these problems and the damage to the town at the end (which we kinda just ignore) could've been fixed very easily by Raphael, but no, Imogen had to get all jealous and irrational. Both have probably done it with hundreds and thousands of people over time, really, what's one more. Long story short, Imogen was not the independent, strong, and scary character I loved from the first book. She was often more talk than action. Perhaps I am just extremely frustrated right now, but I am just disappointed. I also feel like they kinda just ignored Leroy for most of the book. However, this book was still funny and if you are into a sweet and light romance, definitely go for it.

This is still a lot of fun but I didn't enjoy it quite as much as the first one. Don't get me wrong--this is not the kind of series that you are supposed to take too seriously, but it feels like it was written without spending enough time thinking about the plot, or the implications of the details to the plot. For example, near the end, a character shows up, and she is described as almost nine feet tall. Imogen drives her somewhere in her van. She is riding in the back, so she stands on Imogen's bed and begins bouncing. Nine feet tall. Actually, you know what, let's talk about what I know. I am a little over five feet tall. Passenger vans are not sized for me to bounce on a bed while standing upright. Nine feet tall, bouncing on a bed in a van? No. I'm not looking for realism here, but that sort of thing feels a bit sloppy.

I loved!

Warning: Occasional coarse language, sexual references and drug references. No explicit sex scenes. Content note for suicidal thoughts.

It was so enticing that I couldn’t put it down, this book grabbed my interest from the very first page. I couldn’t put it down, I had to know what happened next. The story is well written with a very good storyline. This is Book Two of The Imogen series. This is a fun, fierce and fast-paced Urban Fantasy Series. A slow-burn romance, it includes a diverse cast of characters, shifters, witches, fae, cryptids and more.

Immortality sucks, just ask Imogen Gray, over two-hundred thousand years old and teetering on the edge of total insanity. All throughout history, she’s been hunted by an ancient creature who finds her and rips her to pieces every time she dares to access her deepest powers, but Imogen always regenerates, slowly, and painfully. She’s on a mission to find answers, and she’s almost found them. Unfortunately for her, there’s a delinquent psychic kid, a dangerously hot Vampire King, and a power-crazed blood witch hell-bent on bringing about the apocalypse standing in her way.

Imogen Gray, is strong as a shifter, faster than a vampire, and she’s walked the earth forever, always alone, never growing, never changing, and never learning, either. Her smart mouth and quick temper get her into trouble far too often, when that happens, she gets hurt, sometimes, very badly, and it can take a long, painful time to heal from severed limbs and disembowelment. She's tired of it all, so tired, so she’s on a mission to find the next reincarnation of her father, the only person in the world who knows how to complete the transition to human, and get rid of the curse of immortality.

She just has to find him, but when her delinquent teenage ward accidentally summons a powerful Fae Prince through the portal, suddenly, finding her dad has to take a backseat. There's a homicidal maniac on the loose, one who has his eyes on the Vampire King, her Vampire King. Worse than the burning jealousy is the fact that the Fae Prince seems to know exactly what she is. So with all that and more this story pulls you in and holds you tight. It’s a must read. I highly recommend to everyone.

I’m not going to lie, I was pretty frustrated at the start of book 2 as it seemed like the author was throwing in a petulant character that was going to be unbearable, and he initially was. However, for as obnoxious as he was, he provided a vehicle for the author to show us Imogen and Rafael together, working together, sharing/exchanging meaningful stories of their very long lives with one another and showing them starting to trust each other. They had already started building that trust with their brief interactions before, but seeing them alone and talking, showing up for one another was sublime. Not to mention, the author was really able to further the notion of just how lonely being alive for so long would be, her utter despair in still living while everything and everyone around her left, they all leave in the end. I mean, it was so powerful, even if nestled in with the absurdity of the Fae Prince lusting after Rafael.

I simply cannot explain how much it means to me to hear loss and grief spelled out this way. The author is handling a lot of different losses here as well, with all of our characters. She is showing how each of them deals with their own loss, their disappointments, their insecurities, their trauma. I am struggling to comprehend how an urban fantasy book has done this so well. I am often surprised at how I will stumble upon books and am so profoundly touched by them in this way. Seeing these souls find each other, start forming their own found family and building trust rather than having to go it alone. It’s really easy to hide yourself away from all others, build that wall around your heart and feelings, but that isn’t really living. Seeing the characters come back to life is beautiful. I’m pretty sure I’ve figured out a couple of other points in the series already, but I do not care. If I’m right, then I think they are perfect for his series.

I have been (and still am if I’m honest) a little frustrated with how Imogen is portrayed as being so dim, but at the same time I feel like the author does a pretty good job of trying to illustrate that one’s mind can go a bit wonky after so many years of existing.

Enjoy the Ride

*****Spoilers*****

Good continuation from book one for Imogen Gray. We get some answers in the book about her heritage, she's part human and part star or watcher, whatever that is. Watching but not interfering but somehow her father was able to become mortal and Imogen wants that for herself still. Her thoughts are less careless when she's thinking about her own death since Imogen is making friends but she doesn't see her immorality as a positive. In this book, the portal is open and wider than ever with creatures from other realms falling through. Only Leroy casts a keep away spell that does the opposite for a fae prince who's in town to stay for a while. The price of his departure is a night with Rafael but Imogen isn't having it, jealousy reared its head and she declined well before Rafael could do so himself. The fae prince tried seduction, then illusion, then pranks, and trapping Imogen and friends in a dimensional pocket that they couldn't escape from. Only Imogen turning on her star powers was able to get them out, but Rafael saved the day by keeping her away from and ahead of the Ancient that always came for her when she used it. In the end, Imogen and friends have more adventures, we learn more about the characters, and get to understand that Rafael is in it for the long run. He wants Imogen as his mate and isn't shy about his intentions. Rafael the vampire and for vampires it's taboo to make with humans. Imogen is only half though so not sure if it matters. We'll see what happens there but not sure what it'll mean since his parents are dead, his father in particular not sleeping per the rumor Rafael started.

I liked the book but will admit to hoping Imogen or Rafael would do something about the overzealous cop Grant. He got on my last nerve every time he was brought up in the book. No death for him but hopefully being turned into a pig will be the last the book has to suffer under the horrible policing he does which is really just harassing Imogen continually. Looking forward to next.

What an interesting start to this series! I'm currently reading through Daphne's series (she comes into this world a little later but since you can read each series by itself, that happened to be where I started) since I was between books, I decided to go "back to the beginning" and check out some of characters I hear referred to from time to time in Daphe's books. Does it mean some of the relationships are spoiled - yeah, but I was still up for it.

Imogen Grey has lived a LOOOOOG time, as in a super long time. We finally get an estimate at the end of the story, so I won't spoil it for you. She's tired of being immortal and after many unsuccesful attempts to kill herself in which she always eventually (and painfully) regenerates, she wants to find her father (who apparently appears in cycles or maybe random patterns with a different appearance) so she can get more information about what the heck she is (and hopefully, a way she can die). Along the way of that goal, she finds a big bad (The Blood Lord) is going to try and get knowledge of a really dark blood magic and travels to a small town to try and stop him.

Along the way she rescues a kid (loved the banter and balance he brought to the party) and they set off to try and stop things.

I loved this one - while Imogen isn't as funny as Daphne, she was a fun character and I'm looking forward to hopping into book 2!

entertaining an action pact urban fantasy adventure series

This is an entertaining and action pack urban fantasy adventure series. Great cast of characters and an entertaining storyline. Imogen is a paranormal being that is half human half of another paranormal being that most people have never heard of. She has lived hundreds of thousands of years And is very strong very fast and has many other powers. She tries to stay under the radar and not use her major powers because if she does then an ancient comes after her and destroys her. Even though the ancient territory part she regenerates over decades and centuries And lives on. She cannot be killed. She’s trying to find her father to explain some things to her. He was able to become human and be reincarnated many times over. She occasionally finds him and tries to get the answers and before she figures out what they are human and body passes away The cycle starts again. Now her adventure has brought her to town with a portal or she is waiting for her father to show up. She is for the first time a very long time finding friends and people she cares about and is helping the community with creatures that fall through the portal. Read and see what the adventure Leaves to this book.

Imogen and Rafael . . .

Imogen Gray is immortal, tired of it all, and looking for her father to find out how to fix that condition since he managed to die as a human then come back again and again. Along the way, she sort of inherits guardianship of a 13-year-old boy, Leroy, who promptly gets into trouble. When the boy inadvertently summons an angry Fae Prince Atonas through a portal, the Emerald Valley is thrown into chaos and the search for dad must be put on hold.

The Vampire King Rafael who is obsessed with Imogen is the object of the Fae’s complying with the spell which says the prince cannot leave until he has had a good time and Imogen has to make sure he doesn’t get that good time with Rafael. Rafael was chuckling at her as she tried to deny the jealousy that he saw as he knew the idea bothered her.

I must admit I do enjoy the humor. The characters in the story are wonderful and the story line moves well. I definitely plan to stay with the series since it’s really good and keeps me smiling at their antics.

This was a disappointing sequel. My biggest gripes were 1) the unconvincing romance and 2) the main character's general uselessness. While I wasn't super impressed by the mystery plot in book one, I was even less into the fae prince plot in this book. It wasn't particularly interesting.

In general, this book made the main character feel very unrealistic and hard to believe in, both in terms of her emotions and her reactions to various situations. She's astonishingly immature for a 200,000 year old. Both of those things grated on me in this book.

As I said, the romance was unconvincing. Yes, Rafael is hot, but he and Imogen didn't have very many conversations about themselves and their pasts, so besides him saving her a few times, I didn't really get why she was so in love with him to the point where she was very jealous and behaving irrationally throughout the book. It was pretty disappointing.

Overall, I didn't enjoy this sequel and would not recommend it. I will not continuing with the series. 2 stars.

I loved the first book in this series but the second one was a chore to get through and I found myself skipping a lot. There were so many things that I didn’t like. The insta love was one thing. I really hate it when the romance part is too fast with no proper built up. It made me not care about their relationship. I don’t like it when authors skip on the first stages and instead create tension later. I read the blurb for the third book in the series and that made me decide I was done after the second. Slow burn is so much better to drag out the tension than stupid obstacles later like misunderstandings or a love rival.

Another thing I didn’t like was the plot. I hated the main villain. His reason for making their lives hell was insanely stupid and dull. I also hated the plot with the human cop. He was so stupid and overly dramatic but for some odd reason the MC was useless and weak around him.

I am so disappointed. The first book had me hooked and I really thought I had found a great new UF-series with a fun and original MC. After this one I just can’t though.

Imogen is making friends

The.people.Imogen met in book one are becoming important to Imogen, chief among them are Lucas (her foster son) Raphael (the Vampire King) and Marigold the town witch. Father Benson.is also finding his way beneath Imogen's shields with his commitment to his flock and his gallant right against the monsters invading the town. This book sees Imogen still hoping to find news of her father, although she is over 200,000 years old nd her father died when she was in her teens Imogen has always been aware every time her father has reincarnated and looks to find him for answers about how he was able to die,........... The Dip is still in the town square and.more and more creatures are stumbling through the worst of which is a Fae Prince who refuses to return to his home world until he's had some fun,,.............. Only problem is his idea of fun doesn't fit with everybody elses..........

I may have taken an extra break to read this...

The first book set up some good world building. It fleshed out the characters. Made them real. Gave them something to do and fight for. A big evil that our FMC could fight. It was good.

This one is a perfect continuation. The characters get more depth, they grow. The world becomes more rich. The things, and people around Imogen are more real (to her, and to the reader).

There is still reluctance for Imogen in accepting a more heroic role. She still fights with her cowardice, her need to run, her reluctance to get attached. But she let's herself. She has become attached to the group that is becoming her found family - and though scary, she seems to be finally not running.

The snark is still there. The banter. Everything that made the first look at Imogen so good. Plus? The slow burn is heating up. 😍

Jut read it. You know you want to!

Our heroine is immortal, as in truly cannot die. Which kind of sucks after a while because she can still get hurt and feel pain. But when a fae prince shows up and starts causing trouble, our heroine sees no alternative but to try and stop him. Even if it hurts.

This is book two of the series. It actually works pretty well as a standalone, but you will be missing a bit of background on our heroine. Your call where to start.

This is an urban fantasy story with witches, vampires and the like. The story is well written and easy to read with a well developed setting hiding the monsters out there. The characters are very well done, particularly our heroine. She is tough and smart, which is a good thing as she is going to need all her skills. The plot includes plenty of action, intrigue and mystery making for a very engaging read. Overall, I quite enjoyed this story and look forward to more in the series.

Highly recommended.

Don’t let the bland blurbs for this series scare you off! This book had so much going on in it and I loved it! The character development was strong and I loved learning more about all of the characters. The ending was completely unexpected (in a good way)! I love the lore the author has created and Imogen’s story is so interesting. Leroy took a tiny bit of a back seat in this one but from the blurb for the next book it seems like we will see more of him then.

I like how the characters manage to skirt being cliche- none of them fit neatly into a box. The blurb is horrible and doesn’t do it justice. If I hadn’t read the short story about Imogen after reading ‘Bare Bones’ I would have passed this series by. If you are looking for swift major plot advancement take note, the overarching plot is going to be spread out over the books.

{29} Immortal Games (Imogen Grey book 2) by Lauretta Hignett is a 5 ⭐️ read.
I loved book 1 in this series and couldn’t wait for book 2, I was far from disappointed.
Imogen Grey is over 200,000 years old and is searching for the latest reincarnation of her father who was once like she was but he died as a human and that’s all that Imogen wants, she’s sick of the long life and losing the people she loves. While waiting for him to show up she’s trying to stop the creatures coming through the Dip into earth with batty Father Benson, when a spell from Leroy brings a Fae prince from the underworld who makes life very difficult.
I loved book 2 (released April 27th and is on KU) and can’t wait for book 3 (releasing the end of May)
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.

At the start of this book, I was intrigued. As the book went on I got more and more bored. There is so much telling with spurts of action. Imogen has some snark but not enough to keep me engaged. A lot of the times it felt like an information dump where we would learn a lot about the new character on scene and then some action then more telling. After a bit I started flipping through pages to get to some action in the hopes that story would move along.

The premise is good and I liked how Imogen did show some growth but to keep the reader engaged it needs some serious trimming of the repetitiveness of the story, plus more action and less telling.

I received an ARC and I am leaving a voluntary review.

Getting gooder and gooder!

And I mean it in all senses of the word. Not only is the story itself getting better, as we learn more about Immy and the other characters, but Immy herself is becoming a more good version of herself as she embraces these nontraditional friendships that snuck up on her. I said it before, but I just love her character development in this series.

And Rafael, well, I know who I see him as in my head as I’m reading. Mmm. Even Sonja and Backman are great as comic relief. Also, we learn a little more about Marigold in this story, which is interesting. And that’s all I’m gonna say about that because I don’t do spoilers in my reviews. You’ll just have to read it for yourself.

Great read, better than the first book. The first in the series felt pretty slow, but Imogen Gray Book 2 is much better paced. I enjoyed it thoroughly. There were a few parts that were a bit silly (the cow shooting lava poop) but I still found those bits amusing. Imogen got a sidekick upgrade from Leroy to Rafael (strength / skill-wise anyway). Leroy was still in the book through to the end but didn't play a very big role. We found out more about what Imogen is, and I can't wait to read the third book to learn the rest!

Loved it

I assumed this book would be like all the other books where a woman is living a 007 type life and thwarting the bad guys. It caught my interest w the little boy she rescues and decides to be his mentor. Then she meets the king vampire that is drop dead gorgeous and reacts very different to her than other men who become obsessed with her. I think I fell in love with him too! This was a very unique read. It's hilarious but full of poignant emotional scenes too. I hope there is another book in the series as I would be very sad to have read them all!

my new favorite series

I rarely post reviews but once in a while a book or series comes along that is so enjoyable that I want to share with others and give this author credit. This is the second book in the series. The first and second books have everything I look for but rarely find in a book. Strong, funny female character. Great secondary character. Action etc. I don’t want to give anything away. Just read them and you won’t be sad you did.

Imogen is my new favorite MC. She is absolutely hilarious. I actually snort laughed at some of the passages in this book. In book 2, they accidentally bring a Fae prince through the portal and must figure out a way to get him back. Meanwhile Imogen starts feeling more human even though she doesn’t realize it. I don’t want to give too many spoilers, so I will end my review by saying it’s a hilarious read and I’m ready for the next book!
