Pretty fun and surprisingly brutal by the end of the first volume; I came to really enjoy anime about gambling after watching Kaiji(goated) and Kakegarui(a little less goated), so I thought I'd give this a shot, and I'm glad I did... I will likely keep reading this one, even though there seems to be over 300 chapters...
Loved it to the core, i dont remember why i started reading it but i just wanted too and here we are, thanks tl surya for the recc, this was really fun and i read it in the reverse order, like from last page to almost first but i noticed one pg num later, yea it was confusing like that and i thought it was non linear and was extremely confused on who that other kid was but yea still dont know ehat relation he has with baka though, chudham. Will get this on my kindle asap, everyday 2 hour buss ride lo will mandatoryily read thiss, too good. And reminded of padakallam in the begining but not really le now. Its just great to see it being soo rooted to japan culture. And i def want to get my hands on ahrdcopy of this.
Note to future self -
Msg sent on simbu didnt save cinema : @SuryaFromGhajini usogoi too good mann, asala i hate it when the setting is always high school and supernatur stuff in high school during these japan animes and shit, nice to see a manga without that setting, love that its so rooted to japan culture yet still it is very unique and just extremely entertaining
Check insta stories and whatsapp chats with surya on this day and discord chats with ishkrit on this day too❤️
im gonna start reviewing mangas on here idgaf no one can stop me, anyways this is a stand in for all 359 chapters of the series
First of all genuinely crazy clever writing you kinda get the sense a quarter of the way into usogui that there is nothing you can ignore, every panel and detail is purposeful and heavily foreshadows much of the plot. Its almost scary how much toshio sako just Knows about what he wants to write. You cant even call the plot ass-pulls (even as ridiculous as they may be) just because of how intentional everything is.
Usogui is deeply interesting more psychologically than anything else as a dramatisation of gambling and a character driven narrative about what it means to gamble. Its not groundbreaking but i think it does a superb job of not necessarily glorifying it either. The games are creative, the world-building is strong and my god are the fight scenes (isnt this a gambling manga?) and art just breathtaking
5/5, dare I say 6/5? So damn good. This is one of those mind games type of manga. Think Liars Game and Alice in Borderland, but this one is solely interested in intellect and strategy (so not horror like AiB). SO fun and the art is drool worthy. I haven’t finished, but I’m marking down the first volume as read. I’m 2/3 the whole thing/7 or 8 volumes (370/580?) Will come back to edit to rate/rank the arcs.
WOW, what can I say about this masterpiece, super good story, incredible art, incredible characters, fantastic writing, unique premise. Total masterpiece through and through. My 3rd favourite manga ever. My favourite seinen manga.
holy shit i have no words to describe just how top tier this manga was !!!!! such insane twists and mind games, you never quite knew how he would make it out of the gambles he made but he would always find a way !!!!!!
Gonna probably give this until volume three and if I still don't think it's good, I'll drop it. Definitely meant for this interested in the psychological genre.
Holy BANGER!! Need a break from normal reading, some let downs here and there. Instantly hooked with the premise of this verse and BAKU is him. Currently on chapter 23.
A standard shonen pairing of hyper-competent freak and good-hearted but mind-boggled noob for him to explain stuff to. In this case the freak is Baku, a gambler who challenges crooks and maniacs - the story in volume 1 shifts from cleverly busting a loan shark to dealing with a guy who has set up a "building of death", a rather dramatic tonal shift but one which lets Toshio Sato's gift for suspenseful plotting loose and saves the comic from tedium. As an artist he has a flair for grimaces and distorted faces which lends itself well to the underworld Baku delves into. Generic set-up, decent material.
