Don't Give a Damn About My Plaid Reputation

Rate this book
Lady Robena Oliphant loves two things in life: her piping and Laird Kester MacBain. Unfortunately, it seems she is destined to have neither. The prestigious piping competition at the Highland Games is open only to men…and Kester has conveniently forgotten to mention he's betrothed to someone else. The jerk.

Well, she might not be able to do anything about her broken heart, but perhaps ‘tis time she found a way to share her music with the world. All she has to do is cut her hair and don a lad’s kilt….

To end a long-standing feud, the King has ordered Kester to journey to the Highland Games and marry the daughter of his enemy. His heart—and other bits—ache at the thought of giving up his precious Robena, but an honorable laird must follow his King’s commands. When the MacBains are joined on their journey by a curious lad with beautiful eyes Kester knows only too well, and the world's most unlikely mustache, he’s flabbergasted. How do his men not see “Robbie” as the beauty she really is? This journey just got more interesting, if uncomfortable in the kilt department.

Unfortunately, the Games—which mark the end of their time together—loom ever closer. Kester must marry another. But if Robena is brave enough to put her reputation on the line, might she win both her music and a future with the man she loves?

Amazing, hilarious story of two people who can't be together...or can they? Lady Robena Oliphant is the musician in the family and her heart sings for Laird Kester MacBain. He's been visiting the Oliphants but must now travel to the Highland Games where he will meet the bride the King has demanded he wed. Robena decides to travel with him so she can enter the Highland Games piping contest (good excuse, right? even if women aren't allowed?) Loved these two, the side characters, the story, well, everything about this lighthearted romance.

I just love the Oliphant sisters & Robena is the fourth to find love. Another well written, fun, entertaining & often laugh out loud read. Robbie & the moustache had me giggling every time it was mentioned. I loved both Kester & Robena & loved the chemistry between them. The banter between, not only, Kester & Robena but the MacBain men was also hilarious. I loved everything about it, the journey to the Highland games, Kester’s internal battle, Robena’s bravery – they all made for a book I found hard to put down

This was a freebie on Amazon. Although 4rth in the series, it can be totally read as a stand alone.
Set sometime in Medieval Scotland, I never could figure out when. This is a Rom com & the author is wholeheartedly anachronistic with her dialogue. Since she's doing it on purpose, you really can't ding her for it.
The trope is supposed to be enemies to lovers, but that's really not the case. More like lovers torn apart by DUTY. The hero falls in love with the heroine, but has to set her aside because he agreed to marry the daughter of his enemy. The King has decreed.
The heroine decides to get on with her life & enter a bagpipe contest at the Highland games. She tags along with the hero's entourage as a boy. Who has a big moustache! I have to give the hero credit for seeing through disguise at once. One of the other soldiers does as well, but everyone else is a dufus.

This was an ok read. I'm wasn't "laugh out loud" amused, but the author was trying to go for some humor. There's a satisfying HEA.

Robena and Kester are in love, but as a laird of his clan he must do his duty and marry the daughter of the laird of a rival clan. It’s an order from the King! But Robena is not the type to wallow in self-pity, so she decides to at least fulfill her dream: to win the celebrated piping competition of the Highland Games. Disguised as a boy, she joins Kester’s group when they depart for the Games. But how can Kester not recognize the woman he loves? The trip has just became more interesting than ever…
Hilariously anachronistic, this book is the perfect read when you’re down and want to cheer up more than a bit. I smiled and laughed throughout the story, especially when the characters indirectly “talk” to the author and the readers, but I also enjoyed the steam, the feelings, the love and the romanticism that permeated the book. Who said that a funny book can’t be romantic? Caroline Lee can definitely do both. And she can write about friendship, camaraderie and loyalty as beautifully as she can make up a naughty joke! (Gorgeous cover, by the way!)

Warning ⚠️ do not eat or drink, while reading this book! Tis hard to laugh with your mouth full 😜 Caroline Lee, has a unique writing style unlike anyone I've read...and I've read a lot...she can bring out all the feels... angst, love and laughter....I seriously don't know how she comes up with all the funny shi... umm stuff she writes 😂 The Oliphants are my favorite (unknown year or place) Viking family, Robena wants to compete in the Highlands piper competition, and follow the man she may love, who has been ordered by the King to marry someone else, but she's a lass not a lad, so she dresses up as a lad, but Kester knows at first glance, that she's the lass he loves ❤️ but he doesn't want to hurt her, so he tries to avoid his feelings for her,..best road trip adventure ever! You will not want to put this one down, it's such a funny, sexy read🔥❤️. Oh and at the end, you get to read the ,Authors notes, which I find just as entertaining 😜

“Och, lad, ye must tell me how ye get yer mustache so luxurious! I find myself jealous of a wee stripling!”

“Glue.”

Laird Kester Macbain is torn. Torn between the love of his clan and the woman who has his heart.

Lady Robena “Robbie” Oliphant is in love with Laird Macbain… and her Bagpipes. Mayhap a highland competition being these two loves together?

This story is a brilliant blend of farce, comedy and true love. Never chuckled so much while reading!

Fantastic read from a great author!

Warning: medieval road-trip romance has never been funnier! As with all of Caroline’s HistRomComs, get ready for hilarious anachronisms, plenty of dirty jokes, and steamy scenes hot enough to need a fan! You’re in for a lot of fun!

Will they be able to find a way out of Kester’s predicament…

Oh my…
I just loved this one!
From the witty banters, the smutty bickering between the warriors, the ribald songs and the author’s nod to us readers and all her fun historical inaccuracies, this book is a joyful package wrapped in a cute romance.

There is no true villain, only circumstances that stand between Robena and Kester, and his sense of duty.
Still, Robena is no miss to let others decide if her fate, if can not have the man, she will have her dream.
Kester should never have let his heart take the better of him and fall for the fun and flirty Robena. When he knows he is just on a reprieve until the countdown of his destiny is rebooted.

This is the first book in this series outside the walls of the Oliphant’s castle, a sort of roadtrip bringing in close proximity Robbie and Kester but also his men, it shows their friendship and the strong bond they share and opens Robbie’s eyes about why Kester is following this path.
A hilarious and pert journey with Kester and Robena.

Betrothals, Competitions, Vivacious Romance
First off, the cover on the front of this book depicts Robena perfectly.:
This is a fun and sometimes laugh out loud story. The imagination from this author amazes me. I was totally engrossed with the story. Sometimes being terrified, along with picking up my fan on more than one occasion.
The entire cast of characters were thrilling, supportive, and some characters really had my eyes popping open with their shocking behaviors.
The conversations between Robena and the men Kester had in his crew was priceless.
The chemistry between Robena and Kester was magical, fresh, and bubbly.
Their romance and desirous attraction made this story truly enjoyable.
A smart quick story that hopefully puts a smile on your face. It made me smile and has me looking forward to book 5 in the Bad in Plaid Series.

Don't give up

Robena aka Robbie has been flirting and following Kester around for weeks when a messenger arrives from the king stating he had better do his duty! He was to marry a lass to unite the clans and stop the feuds.
Robbie is gifted with the flute and pipes when her father suggest some Oliphant warriors attend the games it was the perfect ruse to go and earn a name for herself and convince Kester of their future!
There are bawdy jokes, songs and near drowning all finally convince Kester he can't let Robbie go? When they get to Laird Macbain they are summoned to his tent and his extremely young lassie way too young who does something foolish and Robbie runs after the girl and now Kester has 2 people to save!??? Which will it be? Can he save both and does this mean he will still loose land and a bride?
Get ready to laugh out loud and make up music for bawdy songs and poems. Bravo!!!

A good read

I enjoyed reading about Kester and Robena, how they met to how they fell in love. He was Laird of McBaine clan he was supposed to the Highland Games to marry his enemies daughter but he didn't love her, he loved Robena and wanted to marry her. Robena was very good with musical instruments and it was her dream to play her bagpipes in the piper competition at the games. She cut her hair and disguised herself as a lad, she fooled some for a while to she took a dunk in the river, she can't swim. He saved her and it was decided they would figure something out about his enemy. In the end it all worked out, they got married right there at the games. She came in second to an old piper. I highly recommend this book. 👍👍👍👍❤❤❤❤

funny, manipulative, deceptive,

Robena the musically talented daughter gave her heart to Kester Macbain, who was forcibly betrothed to another. This is a wild road trip with her pretending to be a male not fooling Kester or his #1 in command. The jokes on the trail are ridiculously laugh out loud funny as is the break in the fourth wall occasionally. Kester is a good guy trying to do 5he right thing. Robena is forceful, manipulative and seductive trying to get what she wants. It’s a battle of wills till Kester caves then it becomes an ordeal to get Murray to let him out of the arrangement. Don’t look for seriousness in this book it’s meant to be funny and don’t look for historical accuracy more hysterical accuracy.

A great addition to this series. Robena and Kester are in love but he has to marry another to help his clan. When he leaves Robena decides to join him as far as the Highland games, but dressed as a male. He sees straight through the disguise but his men don’t and then a hilarious story starts of their journey and of Kester and Robena’s love story. What a great imagination Caroline has to come up with the mad conversations and scenario’s in this book.

My favorite histromcom author does it again!

Caroline Lee is without a doubt the most irreverent and hilarious Scottish romance author of all time. Never has an author made me laugh so much in such a short time. If you’ve never read one of her books, just do it, and at the end make sure to read the author’s notes for a lesson on everything that was historically inaccurate throughout the story. I’m constantly blown away by her knowledge of Scottish history, which she conscientiously ignores for the sake of a good story.

What an intelligent and graceful narrator!

Tee hee! Unless you're a crabby Karen and demand an anal amount of historical accuracy, you will adore anything written by Caroline Lee! Who wouldn't enjoy a road trip with a cross dressing lass and her hunky laird as they journey to their (hopefully shared) destiny? I laughed. I cried...well, maybe I just laughed so hard tears ran down my leg! I swear I don't need another addiction, but I just can't stop myself. Just read anything she writes. Your life will be better for it.

This is book 4 in the Bad in Plaid series but this can be read as a standalone. It is hilarious! READ IT! This book is about Lady Robena Oliphant and Laird Kester MacBain. If you want historical accuracy, don't read this book. If you want a great, laugh out loud book, read this book. It is so funny with all the comments about modern things. Kester real is just a sweetheart and Robena knows what she wants. So many innuendos and inappropriate jokes happen in this book, you will be chuckling all the time. Its a great read!

OMG THIS IS A VERY FUN SERIES!! You can not go wrong with them. They are a Lough out loud comedy of puns.
Lady Rogers is the music efficiento of the girls who wants to compete in the pipping competition of the highland games to prove she is just as worthy as any man. With the encouragement of her sister she sets out to do just that. And here starts the comedy/comedy of errors.

I would love to say more but it would spoil the whole story. Just know that you will be rolling with laughter and enjoyment.

Such a fun and ribald series. Robina dresses as a lad to travel with Kester, the man she loves who is already betrothed. The men they travel with are hilarious and it is fun how the author slips in current words and phrases. Robina and Kester stop trying to deny their love. Once they make their destination a huge decision will be made and some surprises will occur. Full of inuendos and saucy characters.

Great Fun Series

I always enjoy Caroline Lee's books. She never disappoints me. I enjoy her sense of humor and her stories. I loved Kester and Robena's story. These two are a fun couple that made me laugh. He thinks he has to marry another to save his clan. She can't let him go and dresses as a man to follow him to the games. A lot happens on the way and love finds a way. I anxiously await the next book

Such a fun read!

As usual, Caroline Lee and her brand of "history" has me rolling with laughter during each chapter. Her irreverent humor is laced with a good storyline and well-developed characters and secondary characters that bring about a deserved reprieve from the world today. She incorporates some clever tropes and crafts a fun- loving, heart- rending, steamy story that doesn't take a long time to read because the story flies by. Always a pleasure!

Road Trip Hijinks

Kester and Robena’s roadtrip is one of the most action packed and entertaining I read in a novel in a long time. Robbie fell for Kester and is determined that not even the king’s decree will get in the way of her future with Kester. I admired her determination to go after what she wants. I enjoyed the camaraderie among Kester’s men. I’m looking forward to Nicola’s story.

And ... this (I.e., access to Ms. Lee’s books) is mostly the reason why I reupped for Kindle Unlimited when it was put “on sale”. I get to continue this delightful, amusing series and other Caroline Lee books.

Kester and Robbie and their MacBain companions were enjoyable to travel with. I also liked how the potential conflict of a prearranged marriage was dealt with (whew!).

I read the sneak peek ... and I don’t recall the one-eyed Hunter from Book One. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Awesome!

I loved Robena and Kester’s story! The McBain warriors were hilarious and their antics kept me in stitches.
The Bad in Plaid series is full of puns, sarcasm and humor. If you’re looking for a series to read that will lighten your mood and lift up your spirits this is it. There are hot hunky Scots in their sexy kilts and strong women who are not afraid to go for what they want. I’m still curious though what the Scottish warriors wore under their kilts! 😉

A fun romp through the Scottish countryside. Typical Caroline Lee risqué humor during the road trip conversations. The cross dressing aspect of the story was hilarious since Kester knows immediately Robena is a woman and everyone else is oblivious. The reveal of the betrothed at the end was completely unexpected. Enjoyed this one as much as I have all her other books.

What a fun story! Robena is certainly a woman who knows her own mind from the very beginning! I love how she embraces life and each adventure. Caroline Lee always writes an entertaining story with lots of fun “modern” references. Great book! I can’t wait for the next one!

Love wins

Lady Robena falls in love with Laird MacBain when he comes to the castle by orders of the king to retrieve a missive. He also falls in love with Robena but cannot marry her because he is already betrothed to his enemy’s daughter. When the king orders him to go to the Highland games to give the missive Robena dresses as a man and goes with. Hilarious story.

Hilarious. Light hearted Scottish romance. Once Robena sets her sights on Laird McBain, he’s her’s just doesn’t know it yet. When the King decrees he marry his enemies daughter at the Highland Games, Robena joins his men dressed as a young laddie to full fill her dream of winning the Pipers contest. McBain see’s through her disguise and his resolve weakens. Great read.
