Next in the virtual pile of things from the Kodansha sale. The remarkable thing about this near-future manga is the date: it was originally published in 2008, but it reads like a grim post-Fushitsusha parable. Following a Chernobyl-style meltdown, future Tokyo is an almost deserted wasteland of radioactive contamination, untouched since its evacuation and reclaimed by nature. Years later, a distress signal from an underground bunker suggests that some inhabitants survived - so a squad genetically engineered to resist radiation is sent in to find out more. Seinen manga being seinen manga, the squad is made up of schoolgirls.

Thankfully, having given himself a premise purpose-built for fan-service, Tomonori Inoue resists it almost entirely. While the characterisation of the Coppelion squad won't win any awards for novelty - there's the tough one, the maverick one, and the comically scared/hungry one - these *are* characters, not fetish objects, and the comic is admirably slow paced, thoughtful, and grounded in reality. Inoue's art is attractive, too, and his rendering of both urban ruin and the plants and animals creeping back into it is atmospheric.

It keeps bothering me that these girls do this work in their school uniforms. You'd think they'd have more official government uniforms. Most of the rest of it I can actually buy. Well, except for the girl who keeps freaking out about everything. You'd think this trait would have shown up during training and they would know better than to send her on missions. I'd read more, I think. It kinda ended in the middle of a storyline!

🧶 Personajes
—Vicedirector Mishima Onihei: Ex comandante.

When it was current, I tried watching the anime version of Coppelion and dropped it before long because it seemed boring and that it wasn't going anywhere. After reading Volume 1 of the manga, I've reached the same conclusion.

Tokyo is a deserted nuclear wasteland and after 20 years (!!) they are sending in a squad of genetically modified schoolgirls in sailor suit uniforms to find survivors and radio their "Vice Principal" to come in a big helicopter to airlift them out. Oh, and they make friends with a friendly wolf! It's all very cliché.

For the entire near 200-page first volume, these girls run around the empty Tokyo streets overreacting and making weird faces in response to almost every line of dialog. You don't learn anything about them, their motivations, their superiors, or really anything at all. They are constantly running from A to B, then from B to A, and then maybe from A to F. Not very much happens. I was bored the entire time.

On the plus side, the art is quite nice. I enjoyed the detailed full-page sketches of wasteland Tokyo. And chapters within the volume are brief, giving nice breaking points which I took advantage of, reading this over my lunch breaks.

However, I don't think that I will continue with this series. There is a seed of a good idea here: A radioactive all-girl rescue squad. But I did not connect with any of the characters and.. I'm sorry.. WHY are they dressed in sailor suits?? It's an interesting cover image, but the more you read, the more rediculous it appears.

"Humans... were so desperate to save themselves... that the animals were left behind. And they've been living here this whole time." -hlm. 130

Quality Issue For Digital Manga Structure.

It reads like a Manga but they tried to force this into the structure of a regular digital book. So instead of starting on the first page they start on the very last page and expect you to flip all the way through to get to the beginning. You flip in the opposite direction obviously to progress through, like any manga—but electronically they messed up the format so you start at the end. I just didn’t feel like dealing with it in the end.

This is an interesting manga. There's a meltdown and people are forced to evauate the area due to radiation, but there are 3 girls who were created (born?) that can survive through the radiation and go around helping people. It's a slow start, but it's still a solid manga.

Originally published in 2008, Coppelion is the story of three "girls" who are sent into an irradiated Tokyo 20 years after a nuclear accident following an earthquake.

The mystery of what these girls are and what happened inside Tokyo since the accident make this series rather compelling.

Surprisingly, this saw original publication a few years before the earthquake, tsunami and near-accident that happened in real life.

Also surprising is the fact that, despite it starring three "schoolgirls" - there is no cheesecake or fan service.

Very interested to see how this series unfolds.
