The Moonlight Relic sits high atop the Western Reaches, an ancient fortress against invasion from beyond. An age ago, its enchantments were designed to stabilize the dimensions and defend those who lived there, as well as to be a model for other relics of the same type. Not long after it was built, it was shattered in a cataclysmic war.

Sam has inherited the only key to the relic that exists on Aster Fall. Now, he has to repair it before the Outsiders who destroyed it return. He also has to make Highfold safe for his family while threats rise on every side, including those that have nothing to do with Outsiders.

Primordial enchantments, crafting, and battles await in the third volume of the epic series!

Thoughts:
Now, after following the events in which the author was trying his absolute best not to OP our MC after our last outting, Sam Hastern is surely reaping the benefits and strengths of his ancestral heritage and is finally beginning to understand that a lot may be resting on his broad shoulders.

This books continues immediately after the second left off and are strictly to be read in order. He finally learns the perks of being granted the World Core's favor and has become a guardian of an ancient relic that broke at the world's last breaking, which was in a war over 66,000 years past. And now he's frantically trying to find ways to make the world safe for his la famille.

A well written addition where events finally start picking up after some much needed expansion of the almost non-existent prior backdrop of lore, myth making, and world-building. A very talented author and I highly recommend these series for LitRPG fans and general fantasy fans that enjoy unique universes and own world-building.

A Great Escape into a fun read.

Most GameLit and LitRPG books, in my experience, have an overall tendency to lack the more alluring prose of great fantasy books. The Guardian of Aster Fall series is one of the few exceptions that I have found so far.

This clean, well written, and pretty well edited book is a breath of fresh air. It's not Hemingway or Wordswoth (thankfully), but the hyperbole within allows imaginations to flourish.

Detailed world building is developed a great deal through inferences, actions, and dialog rather than through clunky information dumps. World and character histories are established gradually, and you often learn these histories along with the MC, Sam.

Many three-dimensional, dynamic characters draw you into the story; still, Moonlight Relic (and all of the books in the series really) has a large number of its characters leaning so far towards good or evil that ya have to wonder whether the World Core guides its inhabitants towards one extreme or another!

Leveling system is not completely unique, but the author has put his own spin on the details.

Overall? I'll absolutely keep an eye out for the next in the series. This is definitely a series that I'll read more than once. Most of my reading comes from Kindle Unlimited books, but I plan on buying all if these books.

The Guardian of Aster Fall books have effectively clobbered my stress, allowing me to escape into the pages enough that time and life beyond the story ceased to exist for hours at a time.

If you are looking for a fun story with a great combination of world building/forging, action, crafting, and a (likely) HEA, you should definitely pick up this series.

And just an aside: Altey—my favorite character, I believe —is wonderfully fierce, and her big brother Sam makes you wish for one just like him!

Each book in this series is very satisfying! From zero to hero! These last 3 books has seen a significant increase in Sam’s power with abilities, skills, levels, and with his allies! I love the unfolding of this world and magic surrounding the Guardian of Aster Falls!

power

MC becomes OP. Then his hard work pays off.

Still a sideline in crafting, with enchanting and scribing being central themes.

The last 15% of the novel felt like a long drawn out epilogue. The primary goal was reached and there was a secondary issue that needed to be resolved, but there was a *lot* of development that also took place. Chronologically it needed to be there, but its place in the narrative was not ideal. Some of it would fit better in the next book.

Said next book I will eagerly watch for.

It’s like David took the first 2 books and gave ‘‘em mountain due

The first 2 were great… this 3rd book was BANANAS. Loved every second of this. Literally grew more and more morose the closer I got to the end, but alas all great things must come to an end… On literal pins and needles for book4

I like the world and the focus on family this series has, but the fights are the weakest part for me, I feel like they dont have any real stakes so I dont get invested. The fight with Micas I litterally started it going, "I bet nothing is actually going to come from this" and flipped to the end and turns out I was right.

Im planning on starting the next, but if it doesn't change up too much I'll probably drop it.

Interesting reading with lots of thought on how the magic works in Aster Fall

The MC is growing more powerful, though there are many who can still take him out. He has unique skills as the horned hunter of the moons, but as a 7 foot giant with horns, how is he going to attract a girlfriend? He is after all a young man and most young (and many not-so young) men seek female companionship. There are a few women in his circle, though he's never expressed any interest in them, but hey, what would life be like without good food and the company of a good (or bad) woman or 2, 3, 5? The storyline progresses, but the lack of even a hint of interest in women makes this less believable. Quite a lot of thought has gone into describing the forms of magic, but its getting to be a bit too detailed, such as the meaning and description of the many different forms of ice that improve the MC's understanding of magic.

Some additional plot threads would help to round out the world building. For example, what is the elf from book 1 up to, along with her father, who is a powerful mage to could help or harm Sam and his quests? More screen time for Micas and his aunt along with their motivations and depredations would help draw the readers in. They can be tied into the repurposed outsider artifacts that can cause issues with the seal integrity.

In book 1 Sam and Jeric spent lots of time together developing a deep relationship that we, the readers, could relate to. While that relationship is still there and mom and sis have been added, a physical or romantic interest is missing. In addition, the supporting characters on Sam's team have seen little development; the dwarfen far-seer, the paladin and the man-at-arms have contributed little to the plot. The plot is also quite straightforward.... grow stronger, protect Aster Fall and Sam's family. Ok, where are the curveballs? Politicians that try to backstab Sam, non-human ladies of negotiable virtue to distract, merchant guilds that try to control enchantments, corrupt guardsmen, crime bosses, how about plain old traitors who hire assassins?

Interesting world and systems but not without flaws.

This book is a step up from the others I feel. The shifting perspective is thankfully gone, more connections are developed and furthered between the characters and the world and progression is actually done quite well here. It’s not without flaws though: some elements of the plot like the aura damage eventuate to nothing and seem to serve no real purpose, the main character’s progression though interesting enough in terms of the system being quite well structured feels a little underdeveloped at times as he has a never ending string of victories and huge rewards that makes it feel a little unearned. Some characters also just have no life to them and seem to serve no function in the plot - lestat (I think that’s his name, the guard) is a prime example of this; he isn’t strong enough to really contribute, the other characters don’t seem to have any real bond with him, we know nothing about him other than tidbits like he’s an orphan but that is just thrown out there with no shading or context. He could be cut and no one would notice the difference (in terms of the readers or the characters themselves). And yet despite no emotional link to the other characters at all he views them as the family he never had? You can’t just throw statements like that out there they need to be developed with character beats that make it feel real. Still the overall world I am finding has come to be quite compelling and the worst flaws from the beginning of this series have been ironed out. I’d be hesitant recommending starting this series because there are some real big flaws in the first one particularly but I think it’s worth sticking with so far - the world and overarching plot is the strongest part by far and I’m interested to see where it goes.

I want more now!!!

As usual in the series, this book is good stuff. Love the progression and the dynamics. You learn more and more about the problems that Aster fall is having and the MC is learning more and more and how to fix it. The progression of the MC is good and more the world politics Is being revealed. Lots was done but lots Left to do. I enjoyed crafting in the previous books this one had some but less. Hopefully in future books there is a bit more. Most of the crafted items are for internally use friends and family I would love to see other people enjoy the value of his creations. Perhaps helping making new allies as he expands he is base of operations and obviously he will need more and more support. This is one of the better series that I have read at this point and thoroughly enjoy it. Sometimes I like to wait until there are more than one book available before I dig in so I can get 2 in a row but I couldn't wait this time. So now I have to wait for the next book... Sad.

Great continuation of an already amazing series

This book is a great read. Grammar is great, story is on point, and even though the plot and premise is similar to a lot of different progression fantasies, I still got absorbed into the book and the MCs Frame of mind.

What would make it 5 stars is to include elements that would make the reader truly concerned for Sams well being. At only a few points was I thinking that maybe Sam would be truly challenged but never did I think that he was in danger. Maybe that wasn’t the point of this book, but I always find myself more invested if the MC is truly in danger or challenged, not just for plot progression. Again YMMV, but I thought it was better than average book and I’d continue this series especially if I see the changes I mentioned above.

So, I kinda went ham and read books 1-3 all in a row. This is not normal for me - which tells you something about this high calibur world building adventure all on its own! This review covers Battlefield Reclaimer (1), Aster Fall (2), and Moonlight Relic (3).

Guardian of Aster Fall 1-3 is just crazy amazing. Sam and his father are sucked away and have to battle it out in order to survive. While that's rather normal for LitRPG, it takes a seriously odd turn and becomes a family adventure that reminds you how strong, lasting bonds will always win out. You grow as they grow and haning on the edge of your seat to learn more about their world. How was it created? Why does it seem to be wonky? I have no idea how Sam and his family will save the world, but they'll sure give it a try. It's very 'any age friendly' which I didn't expect for LitRPG. Wonderful job.

New enemies & more adventure

We continue where we last left off the story in the last book. Challenges previously insurmountable are bit easier but fresh enemies abound. MC has a realistic character progression though supporting characters have a significantly less role to play in the latest installment. I still think the way various team members played important roles wasa highlight of this novel and author would do well to not neglect this aspect. Lone wolf MC stories are aplenty and slightly disappointed that one of my favourite points for the series is diluted.
Strong plot points and plenty of excitement yet to come hinted at. Looking forward to the next installment of the series.

The series is still very good.

The MC and the cast of characters that surround him a very likable. this book is about character progression growth and family. The MC is still not Overpowered. If you read the stat sheets he really is not very strong. The author still did not use him as a punching bag, he’s able to hold his own with help. The story is fast paced and has good action sequences. The crafting skill progression is very well done and doesn’t have you skipping pages. The only thing I did not like is eight certain sequence with the Hastings relative, no spoilers. The only problem now is I have to wait for the next book so I’ll find something else to read, book was very good.

continued excellence

This series maintains it quality so far. The world building is exposed bit by bit, which brings things into sharper focus.

The character growth occurs at a reasonable pace. The skills and powers progress logically.

The threats continue to build and evolve beyond simple monsters or even outsiders. Politics becomes more apparent and life doesn’t get any simpler for Sam.

It is the rare series that holds my imagination as thoroughly as this has done through three books now. And best of all it is apparent then is still so much more to be revealed. Like an onion layer by layer. Really exciting!

So treat yourself and read this entire series, if you are like me at all you will not be disappointed!

I really dislike when an author gives the protagonist an injury at the start of a new book. So they would have to struggle to do crap they easily did before, and to disable abilities that could have ended a problem before it caused harm.

Since the protag got injured, I saw this coming, and I was right. This is one of the oldest tropes in story telling and I'm not in the mood for this crap.

I'm pleasantly surprised that the author didn't stretch out this injury. It didn't matter in the end, and that made me enjoy this book. I will be picking up the sequel.

I hope the story is still enjoyable.

I am very curious to see where this will go

I don’t understand the motivations of the Hasterns. It was a large part of the conflict in this book, but it didn’t make sense. Why does the Matriarch care, why doesn’t the Patriarch? With the Relic coming online, will the World Core be able to take a more active role in suppressing idiots who try to use Outsider power that they don’t have the capacity to understand? How delightful might it be if the World Core strips them of all of their experience for making such a foolish choice?

Best of the series so far

This series has been building in scope and depth with every book. This one is different in a lot of ways as there seems to be more character development is terms of depth as well as the standard character progression. Things referenced in the previous books become more fleshed out and in your face and Sam's progress is quite pleasing. The Hastens make new allies and the story moved along much better in this novel. Definitely looking forward to seeing where this goes as I'm totally sold on the series at this point.

failures in plot

There’s some spoilers ahead.

Seriously, pretty much everything is great until you reach the end, and then the author decides to deploy one of the worst cliches in bad plot. Letting your enemy live even though there’s absolutely no reason to, and doing so puts everything the main characters cares about in danger. It was already established early on that killing him would have zero negative repercussions, and then out of no where MC decides it’s better to send him away with intel and a serious grudge. Very poor showing.

This was more fulfilling than what I was expecting. Plenty of new kind of threats, some really terrifying, but they were spread around - and thus not a constant presence like it was in the second book. To add to that, we saw Sam interacting with other characters a bit more in this book. The events are also moving towards kingdom-building trope, which I'm highly looking forward to. On the annoyance side, the extended family were up to no good and conflict is brewing that'd likely end up harming the efforts to shore up the world seal.

I still enjoyed the book

While it did slow down a bit, and the action was more nuanced than in previous novels, it made sense. I still enjoy watching Sam grow and become more than he ever dreamed he'd become. While I get annoyed by certain instances of stupidity on several characters' parts, Sam's included as well as Jeric and his idiotic choices. I suppose it makes sense for Jeric to make these mistakes, but Sam doesn't have that excuse.

Nonetheless, it's still a great story, and I still recommend it.

Great

Another great book in the series. One thing of like to give a shout out to the author for is keeping the family as a main focus in the series, I've read many books over the last few years where the MC has no family either because the estranged, dead or missing and some times it just send to be lazy or uninspired writing for this so it's been nice to read a story where the MC loves his family and is doing all he can to protect and enrich them. Looking forward to starting the next one. Thanks fur your stories

Kicking butt and taking names!

Man Sam was on a tear in this one! It’s one bounty after another, plus his cousin who’s out to kidnap Altey! He doesn’t have time for a breath much less a break it seems! Great fights, cool crafting abilities, some surprising upgrades and more! We also get more background on the history of Aster Fall and the region. A great continuation, now I just have to wait impatiently for book 4!

Growing stronger just means stronger enemies

This book is about growth. Growing family, strength, knowledge and friends, but also enemies near and far. Sam's journey has lead him from being trapped underground facing foes stronger who outnumbered him in book one with a life that seemed destined for mediocrity to one where he is a champion of the world.
There are still many stronger than him, and he must grow stronger and help his world grow stronger too.
What a great series!

Good story weak bad guy

I enjoyed the book it was a good transition to better bigger problems, which is why the villain is such a nuisance to me he is a nothing burger so much waste of time on this bug id rather there be no villain in this book its just a transition point so a timed crisis would have been the better focus with the mini bug in there for added plot but yeah. Anyway that aside every other stuff in the book I enjoyed.

Good read to be savoured

This is a really fun series of books to devour, the characters and worlds are believable and you find yourself invested in what happens to them all.....
My wish is that the story continues and we see the progression of the world and that happens as soon as possible please

Alignment

The moons align and the Horned Hunter rises to protect Aster Fall's relic. Adversity comes in the shape of Outsiders, and those greedy for power.
Generally a good book, but it could use more time with the team and greater level parity. Thought the others are slowly catching up. Tom out

Coming into this book, I had hopes for the writing and the plot's progression and I'm happy to say I wasn't disappointed. All the issues I had with the first two books were addressed in one way or the other and really, that's all a reader asks for. Another enjoyable read, looking forward to the next.

days and days

Settling in, learning ancient secrets, pushing towards level 100 and the power step that brings.

Makes a logical sense progression wise: improving your body needs a System to oversee everything, otherwise a person could flame out. Wonder if the World Core is a sentient enchantment.

Solid mid-series entry

I still want more development of the secondary characters, but the book was thoroughly enjoyable. I just wish the main character didn't spend so much time alone, talking to himself or his Magic Alexa.
