Craig Burch #3

Love Kills

Rate this book
So says Sgt. Craig Burch of Miami's Cold Case Squad at the end of the first chapter of Edna Buchanan's new novel, Love Kills. So have readers been wondering since reporter Britt Montero vanished after her lover, homicide cop Kendall McDonald, was killed three books ago in Buchanan's The Ice Maiden.

When a bulldozer in the Everglades unearths the skull of an infamous kidnapper, the Cold Case Squad is brought in to investigate. Britt was the last person to see him alive, and the detectives have questions only she can answer.

On a remote desert island where she has sought solace, Montero finds a camera on an isolated beach. The film inside yields photos of a happy young couple on their honeymoon. Soon after, Britt is shocked to learn the newlyweds were lost at sea.

When only the groom is rescued, the connection between the reporter and the new widower astonishes her -- and Britt is even more astonished when she finds out the truth. Ultimately, her search for the bridegroom's secrets and the Cold Case Squad's search for the kidnapper's killer collide.

Britt finds herself desperate and in danger, and only one person can help -- Cold Case Squad Lt. K. C. Riley, McDonald's childhood sweetheart. The two women must confront their differences in order to survive and to protect the life of someone they both care about deeply.

This is book # 3 in the Craig Burch series featuring the Miami Cold Case Squad. But it is also part of the Britt Montero series.

When a skull is unearthed by a bulldozer at a development site the Cold Case Squad gets assigned the case. Seems that Spencer York, a notorious child-snatcher and self-described champion of divorced fathers, didn’t just skip out on his bail. The hole in the back of his skull clearly indicates that he was murdered and buried wrapped in a tarp. Fortunately his wallet survived, including identification, and a business card for reporter Britt Montero, possibly the last person (save the killer) to have seen him alive. But where is Britt?

Britt has been hiding out at an island retreat for several months, recovering from the grief of losing a loved one. She returns to Miami ready to resume her police beat and gives the Squad what little information she has in her notes, but is quickly involved in another immediate story. A honeymoon couple suffered a boating mishap and only the groom survived. There is something so heart-wrenching about this man’s grief and Britt is full of empathy – at least until she tries to contact him for a follow-up story only to discover he has left no forwarding address. Good reporter that she is, she does find a friend of his and as they talk about the honeymoon tragedy Britt discovers some shocking new facts. Before long Britt uncovers the hard truth. This isn’t the first time the groom lost his new bride on their honeymoon – it’s the sixth!

There is a great plot here – heck there are two. But Buchanan seems to have lost her way in all the back and forth, complications, false leads, multiple suspects and back stories. Don’t get me wrong – she’s a great writer and really knows how to craft a suspenseful page-turner. I was drawn in and interested from the outset. Her characters are larger than life but mostly believable. I like the back stories of the detectives and how they came to their jobs, their strengths and vulnerabilities. However, this book is really mostly about Britt’s story and the Cold Case Squad members have little to do but occasionally support her. Of course, Buchanan had to include the old rivalry between Britt and CCS leader K C Riley, and she hints at a new partnership between Britt and one of the detectives on the squad.

Part of the problem, I think, is the book’s structure. There are occasional page breaks with a brief “wrinkled sticky note” that announces Britt or Cold Case Squad. These separate the sections. Only Britt’s story has chapter numbers, however, making the CCS’s story seem like a superfluous afterthought. But the bigger problem with the book is the resolution. At the close of Britt’s chapter twenty, with just fifty pages to go to the novel’s end, we’re left with a serious situation and Britt in real danger. We jump to the Cold Case Squad solving the Spencer York case in a totally unbelievable (and convenient) way. Then we’re back with Britt and some over-the-top plot twists, and a cliff-hanger ending.

So we have a suspense thriller that is heading for a 3.5-to-4-star rating and the author just sort of abandons both plots and goes for a quick ending. What the H??? The ending is arguably the most important part of a mystery/suspense novel and Buchanan totally blew it (in my humble opinion). I give her 2 stars for the first 85% of the book. That last 15% was a complete disappointment.

Britt is a reporter with a Miami newspaper. She works the crime beat. Britt works with the cold case squad and risks her life traveling to another state trying to save an innocent person from uncertain death. It is a pleasant shock when K.C. Riley, a previous rival at the police department, steps in to help Britt out when she needs it most.

So, I’m not really sure about this book. I have not read the others in the series so maybe I would be more sure if I had. I loved the bridegroom May have killed other brides angle but for me the side stories and other stuff going on was well just background noise and very confusing. I may try this author again at a later date but for now just so so.

I didn’t read this as part of the series, so possibly that’s why the end was left so open, but I didn’t care for that. I did like the plot of having two different cold case type police work that Britt was engaging in. I enjoyed the perspective of a news reporter and what they go through for their job. I also enjoyed the shocking twist of being pregnant with a dead fiancé’s baby, even without any background information on that relationship. The very end just felt silly to me. When the mom confessed, I was shocked and enjoyed the storyline. With Marsh and John Lacey, I thought it was silly. I enjoyed the thought of Marsh working alone, not with his gay lover who plotted these murders all these years.

Another excellent author discovered. Edna Buchanan's Love Kills had me laughing out loud. When a bulldozer in the Everglades turns up a man's skull, everyone says, "So that's what happened to the infamous child snatcher!" The book is divided into two different story lines, Britt and Closed Case
Squad that investigates the found skull belonging to a man who abducted children for fathers who resented women having custody, for a nice fee, of course. Britt is an investigative reporter who has recently loss her fiance to a gas explosion. She escapes to remote desert island where she finds a disaposable underwater camera. When the film is developed, the pictures show a young couple on their honeymoon. She returns to her job and learns tha the boat in the pictures has been capsized and the wife is missing and presumed dead. She begins to investigate and finds that the husband had been married six times and all his brides had been killed while on the honeymoon. Britt is pregnant with her fiance's baby, but she begs her editor to allow her to travel to She meets the husband to interview him and is taken in by his grief and good looks. When she calls his home town to find out more infrmation , she learns that the wife was not named Vanessa, but Suzanne who died on her honeymoon with Holt. Now Britt is hooked and will and does go to any length to catch him before another girl is murdered. She discovers he had been married six times and all the wives had met a tragic end while on the hjoneymoon. She travels to each site and eventually ends up in Alaska trying to prevent the latest wife from being killed. The She has a raving appetite and can not adjust to the sun never going down. The descriptions and dialoge are hilarious. It is really a great read and I will start at the beginning of her books and read them all.

Still reeling from the death of her cop boyfriend in the previous book, Britt Montero books a quiet vacation on a remote island. She walks away from her job, her nagging mother, and the beloved chaos of Miami—the humid pulse of the city that never quite lets go—convinced she'll never return. Yet that same wild, steamy energy pulls her back home.

While on that island getaway, Britt picks up a camera a tourist lost on the beach. Her friend Lottie develops the film, revealing photos of a smiling couple she doesn't recognize. Soon after, police recover the woman's body from the water—Vanessa, a twenty-six-year-old cellist with the Boston Symphony. The official story points to a tragic sailing accident, but a forensic photography expert who studies the images insists they contradict the grieving husband's account.

Britt quickly concludes the man is a serial groom: he marries, waits for access to his wife's assets, then murders her. Determined to stop him, she pursues his trail from Miami through Arizona and Louisiana, all the way to remote Alaska. Her mission is urgent—to warn the next potential victim, a lively TV cooking-show host, before she becomes another casualty like Vanessa. Britt knows one wrong step could make her the next target in his deadly pattern.

The suspense builds relentlessly, with tension piling on until the very last page. This one earns a full five stars—Buchanan's writing crackles with life and energy. I'm genuinely sad that the series ends here; as far as I know, neither Audible nor Bookshare carries the final installment (though fans will be thrilled to learn there's actually a tenth book, Dead Man's Daughter, published years later in 2018—still, the wait feels eternal!), so I'll never learn the fate of Britt's baby or how her story fully wraps up. That's the magic: Buchanan makes Montero feel so real that wondering about her future—fictional or not—hits like a personal loss.

I do audiobooks as I work. This was my last Britt book. I kept looking to see how much was left because it was hard to believe that the story could be wrapped up in 15 minutes. When it was I was thoroughly disappointed because it was rushed and a cliffhanger! I felt cheated since had listened to all of the books based on Britt. I didn’t have any time invested in the Cold Case Squad. I really didn’t want to hear about that storyline. I think maybe the last book should’ve been the ending (sad to say) or write one to make amends for this one.

I can't believe I'm done with the Britt Montero series. Wonderful 9 books, altho I do wish the mystery tenth book could be found (it might not even be completed!), because there are some character threads that need some tying up!

I was not thrilled with this book. I've read somewhere in the beginning of the book that there are other books, so I'm guessing this is a part of a series, which is fine. I love series books. So, I guess maybe I should've read the others first? I don't know if I will now because this one wasn't great. The first half to me was boring as hell. I was trying to figure out why I should care about any of these characters. Then, the second half picked up speed and I wanted to know what was about to happen. However, it went down hill when they portrayed the Miami Police Dept. in such an unflattering light. It was funny though--laugh out loud funny- but if I was a police officer, I wouldn't be so thrilled.

(The book had two cases going at once in case someone else, like me, hasn't read any of the other Britt novels.) The author goes back and forth between the cases involved.

Next, she was being stupid and stubborn chasing a serial killer. The woman is pregnant for God's sake, and she had no qualms about almost killing herself. It's like she had no maternal instincts at all for her unborn child, especially the unborn child of her fiance' who was killed and this is all that's left of him.

Lastly, the plot twist at the end of her serial killer scenario felt like it was just pulled out of her purse for ha ha's. It did not play out well as far as I'm concerned. It's like she threw it in as an afterthought because she likes giving people a "surprise!" at the end. It made no sense to me at all.

This story would be much better as a screenplay, than as a novel. I could see it making a better movie, but as a read, not worth the effort. The cold case squad looking for the murderer/s of a horrible man who kidnapped children for their fathers for money was not bad, but again, better as an on-screen story. The ending with this case was at least more interesting and surprising. Then again, if I never mentioned a character in an entire book, and then at the end they are brought to our attention, I could surprise someone, too.

There were unanswered questions and again, if it's a series, I can understand that, but there was one incident in particular that was strange and didn't make sense to me. A dying man who was supposedly helping her track a serial killer whispers the name of his so-called ex-lover, Suzanne. For what purpose? We find out she wasn't really his lover at all and he agreed to her demise. So what was the point of this?

LOVE KILLS (Lic. Invest/Pol. Proc, Miami, FL, Cont) – G+
Buchanan, Edna – 16th book
Simon & Schuster, 2007, UK Hardcover – ISBN: 9780743294768
First Sentence: Operating the huge machine that groaned and howled like a prehistoric monster as it savaged everything in its path was what he enjoyed most about the job.
***Reporter Britt Montero was the last person to see an infamous kidnapper alive. Now that his skull has been uncovered by a bulldozer, the Cold Case Squad, headed by Lt. K.C. Riley, wants to talk to Britt. Britt has been recovering from the death of her fiancée, who was previously the long-time lover of Riley, on a remote island. While a visiting friend entices Britt to come back to her job at the newspaper, they found a disposable camera. Wanting to return the camera, they have the photos developed only to find the owners match a news story of a honeymooning couple lost while sailing. The husband is found alive, but the bride had drowned. However, Britt discovers this groom has a history of brides who have died. In spite of the uncomfortable connection between the two women, they need each other to solve these cases.
*** I was not certain about this book, going into it. But Buchanan pulled off the combined story with great skill. The two women are strong and interesting; particularly Britt who is determined to follow the story through to the end as her life is about to change. K.C., and Britt’s friend Lottie, play pivotal roles in the story. I thoroughly enjoyed how she built the story bit by bit. The three plot lines were skillfully woven to a suspenseful climax. Even though the ending is a bit of a cliffhanger, I didn’t mind as justice is done.

It is the lastest Britt Montero novel. She's a crime reporter in Miami and is just getting back to the job after her finance, a cop, is killed on the job hours after getting back from the vacation where he proposed. I liked it and it was good to get back with the character (there are a number of previous novels with her) but on the last page after getting the crime wrapped up she left us practically mid sentence in a medical emergency with Britt that came about from wrapping up the crime. I'm still pissed about it.

Buchanan comes up with two interesting storylines and two unexpected (if slightly unrealistic) twists but her dialogue and writing style are not very smooth. One detective speaks Spanish and immediately translates himself into English, for no apparent reason. The point of view switches between reporter Britt Montero, the series's main character, and the Cold Case Squad, each working on two separate cases. Fans of the series may enjoy the developing relationships between the characters but, on its own, this book does not satisfy.

#9 in the Britt Montero series. This 2007 entry has ties to the Cold Case series, as does #8 The Ice Maiden (2002). Britt Montero, Miami newspaper reporter, covers the police beat.

Britt Montero spent grieving time after the death of her fiancé. She returns to find that the Cold Case Squad wants to talk to her about a kidnapper she interviewed before he disappeared - until his skull reappeared in a swamp. She also gets involved in the tragic death of a woman on her honeymoon and her distraught husband, until she finds he had lost other brides.

I really like the character of Britt Montero - she has grit. Britt has been missing from action since the policeman she was engaged to died. When a cold case is opened on a man she was the last person to see alive becomes active she is enticed to come back to Miami and work. But another case catches her attention all because of a camera she found while she was away and this case nearly takes her life!

This was a rather good read. I don't recall reading the previous books about Britt Montero. It turns out that her late fiance left her pregnant, and she has to get back to writing for the Miami newspaper so she has a living. She and a friend found a camera with pictures of newlyweds who disappeared off a boat in a storm. The husband survives, and is revealed to be a man who is a serial murderer of newlywed wives. Interesting premise.

So disappointed - this started out great but what a fizzled ending. Yes, there was a slight surprise toward the end but it was completely out of the blue and odd. This is listed as part of the Cold Case Squad series but that part of the book was weak and thin and added nothing to the story. There was great potential for the journalist looking for a serial killer of brides but it just didn't come to fruition.

Finally the return of Britt! I liked this book although the ending really left us hanging with the next book not coming out until 2017 sometime. There really were two stories in one but I love the Cold Case Squad guys so I really didn't mind. The chase scene with Corso and Navario was absolutely hilarious - if it could go wrong, it did. I love this series and I'm glad that Edna Buchanan is going to continue it.

Former journalist Edna Buchanan writes about Miami like a true native. The story goes back and forth from the point of view of Britt Montero, crime reporter, and the cold case squad of the Miami police department. Lots of twists and turns along the way to finding the killer.

My first Britt Montero novel, but it won't be my last.

I've always liked the Britt Montero series, and was happy to find that there was a newish title I hadn't read. While I still find Buchanan's the most enjoyable of the Miami-based mysteries, I found myself slapping my head a few times over plot holes and dunderheaded decisions, and I suspect the author only knows about pregnancy from a few afternoons of surfing Babycenter.com.

I believe I am required by law to continue reading Edna Buchanan's books, even though her last few haven't been as good as the first Britt Montero ones. I always giggle over the fact that I'm sure Britt is Edna's alter ego, and Britt is as close to sainthood as a living human can get.
