For a Christian publisher this is a disappointment.

I am kind.
I am strong.
I am brave.

Or something like that in some order, which if it ended with "in Christ" I would agree with, but the only mention of God was to say God loves me. Which is correct, but the book is misleading in the fact that it is I am fill in the blank but it's not through Christ as it should be.

I voluntarily received and reviewed a complimentary ebook or physical copy of this book which I received from the author and/or publisher or blog tour coordinator All views expressed are only my honest opinion and are in no way influenced by others views or wishes.

This is a really nice book that explains how to use affirmations, as well as the power they can have over the course of a day. I like how the main character in the book shows her struggle with them at times, but also shows how perseverance pays off. The affirmations at the end of the book are a good resource too and I could absolutely see myself using this in a lesson with the children I teach.

I'M GOING TO HAVE A GOOD DAY! Daily Affirmations with Scarlett.

As the book nerd in the family (voracious reader, book blogger, book influencer, book reviewer, author website designer)— when Tiania texted me about a year ago to tell me the news of a book deal, I was OVERJOYED and ECSTATIC!

The mother-daughter team has inspired millions and continues to do so daily, and a lot of love goes into the routines she shares with families worldwide. It warms my heart to see my niece give thanks to my brother-in-law (her dad), who instilled in his three children the power of affirmations, love, and support.

Scarlett dedicates the book to all children, big or small, loud or quiet, exuberant or shy. May you paint the world with your shining colors.

If you have seen the famous mother-daughter duo on TV, videos, Tik Tock, or other social media, you know how inspiring they are to other children, teens, siblings, mothers, fathers, and grandparents. Families who may be different but love each other the same.

The book is beautiful with vivid, colorful photos and affirmations and showcases their family and interactions. Ideal for gift-giving and for every household as a way to ignite the spark of positive daily affirmations. The illustrator did a superb job with the design, and the characters come alive on the page. I hope we see more books from Tiania with Scarlett as she ages, and we can continue to follow her incredible journey.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS:
Tiania Haneline and Scarlett Gray Smith make up one of TikTok's most optimistic (and self-love-centric) mother/daughter duos. The East Coast-based pair is well-known for their sweet affirmation videos, with their most viral moments attracting the attention of Good Morning America, POPSUGAR, USA Today, and more. Growing up in an affirming household, Tiania was determined to pass the same values onto Scarlett and her two sons, Walker and Reice. She began repeating affirmations with Scarlett while doing her hair every morning, teaching her to embrace the beauty of her skin, curls, kindness, and every trait in between. With the power of TikTok, Tiania and Scarlett are spreading that joy and self-love to an audience of over six million.

I am beautiful. I am kind. I am loved.
In this uplifting picture book (4-8 yrs), young listeners will discover how they can use daily affirmations to remind them of who they are and what makes them SPECIAL. Join TikTok sensation Scarlett Gray and Tiania Haneline as they repeat exuberant affirmations that EMPOWER Scarlett throughout the day and INSPIRE those around her to CREATE their own UPLIFTING self-talk.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND: 5 STARS
This beautiful keepsake is a fun-filled and inspiring kids’ book that includes a list of uplifting and child-friendly statements your child can use to create their daily affirmation routine. With fun illustrations from Stephanie Dehennin that make the story come alive, you and your young reader will discover how much words matter in your lives.

ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATOR:
Stephanie Dehennin is an illustrator based in Antwerp, Belgium. After studying illustration at Saint Lukas in Ghent, she—somewhat unplanned—became a freelance art director in the magazine world but never stopped drawing and painting. Her love for illustration was too strong to ignore, so she dedicated the rest of her career to drawing and painting for children. Stephanie reveres Hayao Miyazaki, Tim Burton, and Dr. Seuss and has a mild obsession with flying contraptions, robots, and excessively large machinery.

Top Children's Books of 2023

From School Library Journal
K-Gr 2—"This is a great introduction to using daily affirmations to replace negative thoughts and doubts with positive ones. The main character is Scarlett Gray, a five-year-old TikTok star, whose most popular video is of her saying affirmations while her mother does her hair. The book opens on her family, her mother doing her hair while she recites her daily affirmations, and then follows Scarlett through her day as she has moments of doubt and negativity. In each relatable moment (riding a bicycle without training wheels for the first time, going to dance class, not wanting to wait her turn to play a video game), Scarlett remembers her affirmations and repeats them to help her through each situation. The story ends with a list of statements readers can use for their own positive journeys. Dehennin's illustrations shine with vibrant colors, swirling banners showing the words, and detailed portraits of the family members and their emotions. VERDICT: This is an excellent addition to all collections that clearly introduces how positive statements build confidence, self-worth, and harmony."—Heidi Dechief

I’m Going to Have a Good Day! reminds me of the adorable videos online of children presenting daily affirmations. Declaring “I am beautiful. I am kind. I am loved” would do us all good.

I was not familiar with the trending mother-daughter team, but I love the positive message they share. Adorned with beautiful illustrations, Scarlett’s story shows the strength in words and self-talk as we fuel ourselves with the muscle of positivity.

This book is beautiful, The message and the illustrations. Going to nursery/Preschool or school is a big step for small humans (children) This book really talks through what to expect from a first school day, but also reassuring that they are not and won’t be alone. It was a joy to read. My child (not going yet) but he did really enjoy the story and got quite excited about the possibility of going to school. I can honestly say, its a joy to read and lovely to read as a night time story.

DISCLAIMER: I received a review copy of I’m Going to Have a Good Day! from the publisher via NetGalley UK in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to the author Tiania Haneline and to the publisher Zonderkidz for the opportunity to review this title.

I’m Going to Have a Good Day! is a picture book based on TikTok star Scarlett Gray’s daily positive affirmation recitals, as written by her mother, Tiania Haneline. In the book, we see Scarlett reciting her affirmations one day while her mother brushes and styles her hair, and witness the lasting impact that these affirmations have on her self-confidence and self-belief in challenging scenarios later on, such as a dance class, being left out of playing video games by her siblings, and learning how to ride her bike without stabilisers. In these scenarios, Scarlett’s affirmations help her to ground herself and remember that she is brave, is kind, is strong – and educates readers both young and old that they are capable of having this same self-belief in themselves as well.

While Scarlett does eventually remember and apply her affirmations in each of the aforementioned scenarios, at first, she does express her concerns and doubts to the reader. She approaches each scenario with caution, or else in a flawed manner in the first instance, such as stealing her siblings’ gaming controller before remembering she should be kind, and returning it to them in order to play with them and share in the fun. This makes Scarlett a very relatable protagonist for young readers, as her initial behaviours are likely recognisable by them, and they may have done the same in similar scenarios or slightly different ones themselves. Scarlett’s recitals and applications of her affirmations then shows readers what a more appropriate or ambitious response might be, and also shows that they have the power to believe in themselves and their abilities just as she does. The inclusion of some of Scarlett’s favourite affirmations at the end of the story is a very nice touch, giving readers a place to start if wishing to try them out for themselves.

Before reading I’m Going to Have a Good Day!, I had not heard of Scarlett Gray nor her mother Tiania Haneline, despite being a frequent user of TikTok. After finishing the book, I made sure to look the pair up and watch some of their videos that had inspired it, and was treated to some great clips of the two interacting, of Scarlett shouting her positive affirmations to the camera, and of mother Tiania showing off her ability to style Scarlett’s curls in a variety of ways. It was through watching some of their videos that I also learned that the mixed race family shown at the start of the book – being excellent representation on its own – is in fact a fictional depiction of Scarlett’s real-life family, and that Scarlett is herself biracial. Having watched video discussions by people of colour in the past, I know that adequate and effective hair care for people of colour is notoriously more challenging, and sometimes neglected by caucasian parents / guardians, so it is lovely to see the importance of this emphasised in the pair’s videos and shown as part of the story of I’m Going to Have a Good Day!, too.

The illustrations in I’m Going to Have a Good Day! are by Stephanie Dehennin, and I must say, they are simply lovely to look at. Dehennin’s artistic style, use of colour, and chosen layout for each of the two-page spreads is superb, and I found myself scouring each page to look at and appreciate the smaller details included in each. She captures Scarlett’s real-life appearance really well on the page, in particular showing off her various hairstyles in a really vibrant manner, while also accurately representing the rest of Scarlett’s family as well, bringing them to life and showing off each of their personalities. A stunning added touch is the opening and closing inside cover illustrations, which sum up Scarlett’s various affirmations as well as demonstrating some additional ones. The only divisive affirmation that I have seen other reviewers commenting on is “God loves me”, which is included in these inside cover illustrations, as well as the line “God loves you too” at the very end of the book. For atheists like myself, or those following another religion, this perhaps creates distance with Scarlett’s message if spotted; for me personally, I didn’t take any issue with it, though I do feel that in the sense of self-belief and self-confidence, this should wholly come from within and not from any external sources.

Overall, I found I’m Going to Have a Good Day! to be an enjoyable and entertaining picture book, capturing Scarlett and Tiania’s real-life positive affirmations in a fictional format. It isn’t overly long or complex, and shows the positive impact that daily affirmations can have on a person’s self-confidence and self-belief – particularly in young people. Haneline’s writing was well-adapted to a young audience, flowing easily and being easily readable, so I took no issues with that. In fact, I have very few gripes with the book at all, but two that do stand out are that it does not use the word “affirmations” when they are first recited by Scarlett, which may confuse younger readers when the term is brought up later, and that it does not directly address the possible question in readers’ minds about how to make reciting affirmations like Scarlett effective. It is one thing to recite an affirmation daily, but another thing entirely to believe it while you’re saying it like Scarlett does in the challenging scenarios she goes through, so something to discuss how to believe in the words you recite would have been nice to see.

I would recommend I’m Going to Have a Good Day! to young people of the recommended reading age of 4-8 years, as well as to any older readers like myself who maybe need a reminder that it is possible to drive yourself forward and believe in yourself without external validation or motivation. After all, we are all capable of empowering and believing in ourselves just like Scarlett!

I was so super close to buying this for my niece who has a family that looks very much like Scarlett’s and whose personality can definitely match that of this adorable and wonderful little girl in many ways. In fact, I’m personally of the mind that this book is almost pure perfection.

I’m so excited about the messages it sends, especially that of kindness and remembering to be kind even in moments that we don’t really feel as kind as we perhaps could be or know we are. The shy and brave pieces were absolutely amazing, too!

And I loved the illustrations!

All of this said, the book does have a small exclusionary problem because it brings in religion. And for that reason alone, what could have been literally the most perfect book I ever could have gotten my niece ended up being something I could never feel comfortable gifting to her. And it’s a real shame, which I found quite disappointing.

Now, I recognize that this is a personal thing that will apply to some who are like me and won’t apply to others. So, if you do happen to believe in God, then this book might genuinely be perfect for you and your family. Unfortunately, it just wasn’t a good match for me and mine.

With fun illustrations from Stephanie Dehennin that make the story come alive, you and your young reader will discover how much words matter in your own lives.

My Review:

I am learning that daily affirmations help manifestations in my every day life. So when I read that sweet Scarlett, does the same thing with her Mommy each day--I thought I wish I would of done that with my children when they were little.

Scarlett doesnt always feel the things that her mommy asks her to repeat about herself each day. But, it helps this little one to feel secure enough in herself that she uses those things to build herself up. Such in times of shyness or in adversity.

This book would be a really good introduction for daily affirmations for any young child.

Our narrator, Scarlett, gives us tips on how to use affirmations to have a good day. And I love the way that Scarlett is taught these affirmations: by her mother speaking them to her every morning, and having her repeat them, while she styles Scarlett's hair.

Scarlett is biracial with curly black hair, while her mother is Caucasian with very straight hair. Hair care for children of color is sometimes neglected by their non-POC parents, but with Scarlett, hair care is expressly the responsibility of her mother, and her mother is not only caring for her daughter physically in these moments, but also uses this time to build Scarlett's confidence. As they work, the mother asks Scarlett to repeat affirmations. You can tell, if this little girl was real, these are the memories of her mother she'd cherish the most when she's older.

Scarlett's morning affirmations follow her throughout the day. As she feels doubt or fear, she pauses to repeat them to herself, regaining the confidence to try hard things. And it's not just her that benefits! All about Scarlett, her family and friends hear her affirmations and repeat them, allowing them to also conquer their challenges.

As a note, whether you are religious or non-religious, one of the listed affirmations at the back of the book (not within Scarlett's story itself) is "God loves me." For some of you, that will be an extra selling point. For me, there was some hesitation, as we are a non-religious family. But, luckily, my kid can't quite read yet, so I didn't feel the need to bring that line up. Deal with it as you will!

This adorable book is perfect for little girls! It is so cute and has a strong message. Before my daughter was born, I had seen a video on the internet about affirmations and saying them daily with your children. By the time my daughter was speaking, I taught each evening before bed to say a handful, including the ones in this book! This sweet story is told by a little girl and addresses a range of emotions a girl might feel and why, like sadness or grouchiness or fear. She remembers the affirmations she reviews each day with her Mama and they encourage her to make good choices and overcome. What an inspiration to other little girls, like mine! The illustrations are vivid, adorable and colorful. The words are short, sweet and easy to understand.

The book also depicts a multi-racial family making this a great book for adoptive families like ours and other kinds of blended families. The faith element to the book is very light, with only a reminder that Mama loves her little girl and God does too. It also offers some additional affirmations and encourages young girls to assert themselves and believe in themselves. How empowering! A definite recommendation that would make a great gift to the little girl in your life!

I'm Going to Have a Good Day is a great book to read to children over and over to help them to build self-confidence and make daily affirmations a habit. I am not familiar with the tik-tok mother/daughter team as I don't use that platform, but if there is more of this type of positivity, I might just check it out. In this book, Scarlet is a young girl who is part of a bi-racial family. She is proud of her family and her part in it. Everyday as her mom helps her get ready for the day and does her hair, they repeat affirmations to start the day in an uplifting way. "I am beautiful" "I am strong" "I am brave" "I am kind" and more are included. As the book progresses, Scarlet is in different situations where an affirmation helps her to move forward. I like the concept and wish parents would all help their children to be positive, have a good self-concept and how to use these to overcome difficult situations. I tried to get my grandchildren to repeat them after me and the older ones did, but the little one just got silly. I think this would be a great book for new parents, baby showers etc. The illustrations were also wonderful. They were large, bright, vibrant and showed happiness and other emotions.

An empowering and uplifting book filled with affirmations that children can repeat daily.

Scarlett repeats her affirmations through the day. I am beautiful. I am kind. I am loved. Her words not only remind her of the truths of her life, but also inspire those around her to create their own positive internal mental self-talk. The words Scarlett uses fill her mind and heart with love and joy, pushing out any negative thoughts that may bring her down.

With a powerful message about the impact of words and the important role they play in childhood development and self-esteem, this book is a great way for parents to establish their own affirmation routine with their kids and come up with a list of their own to repeat daily.

This story was both entertaining and educational, which can be a tricky balance to maintain in a children’s book, and I will be suggesting it to teachers whenever possible. Incorporating social-emotional skills and topics such as this into children's picture books is a tried and true way to teach an important life skill in a way that is fun. This would be an amazing addition for classroom libraries, counselling offices and more.

I love the illustrations in this.

Scarlett is a young girl, living her life including picnics, having her mother do her hair, learning to ride a bike without training wheels, going to dance class, playing video games. She's worried about how different scenarios will go and doesn't always act/react ideally, but remembers her affirmations (which she does in the morning with her mom) and self-corrects when needed.
From the illustrations, we see that her affirmations often have positive ripples for those around her, too.

Reading other reviews, some folks are unhappy that "god" is mentioned twice... or disappointed it is *only* mentioned twice. So, uh, here's a warning, if you want it, I guess. It didn't stand out to me much while reading.

I'm Going to Have a Good Day! by Tiania Heneline is such an uplifting read.

This is such a wonderful book about being brave, kind and strong - even in the moments where that feels hard to do. I love the illustrations and the message this book gives.

I read this story to my littles, and they loved repeating the affirmations after me and it made me realize these are things that should be said to everyone, every day. Waking up and telling ourselves we are brave; we are kind, and we are going to have a great day can go a long way for many.

I really wanted to like this book because I love the teaching of affirmations to children and empowering them to be their best selves and enjoy every day. However, I have a philosophical problem with this book: It is written by and about a mom who went viral on TikTok for sharing her and her daughter’s morning routine of affirmations. As heartwarming as that is, the child is not young enough to consent to having her image and words all over the internet and now in a book. Additionally, this story includes religious themes which may not be appropriate for or appreciated by all members of the target age group.

A children’s book all about positive affirmations. I am brave. I am strong. I am kind. I loved it! It shows Scarlett starting her day with the affirmations, remembering them in the middle of the day when she is presented with challenges, and remembering them with her mom when she goes to bed.

The illustrations show Scarlett as an African American girl living in a bi-racial family. Her mother is white. This would be a great book for biracial kids who have adoptive or foster parents who have different skin color than them. I loved seeing that representation.

Thank you to NetGalley for the advance copy of the book. A review was not required, and all opinions are my own.

This book has lovely illustrations and a sweet message, but I have mixed feelings about it. The book focuses on saying affirmations about how you're kind, smart, and brave, etc., and talks about God just enough to deter many secular readers without providing any genuine substance for Christian families. Also, the author's claim to fame is from making TikTok videos with her daughter, the main character of this book. This makes me uncomfortable, because even though the goal is clearly to spread positivity and joy, her daughter is too young to consent to her image and identity being used in such a public way.

Empowering story for children everywhere. Readers see this young girl interact with her mom as she gets ready for the day. Her mom emphasizes affirming statements and has the child repeat them. These sustain her throughout the day. When she wants to make a less than affirming choice or has doubts, she remembers and knows she is strong, brave, loved, etc. I appreciate that this young girl offers affirmations for readers to use at the end of the story. A must purchase for young families.

Affirmations come in different ways and sometimes we need to be reminded of those affirmations when we are having a bad day. Scarlett is reminded of those affirmations when she is grumpy, sad, or left out. Affirmations sometimes help us be kind to others as well. It is important for parents to talk with their children about affirmations and how to be healthy with our affirmations.

MY THOUGHTS: I'M GONNA HAVE A GOOD DAY is a hardcover picture book for children that is positive and encouraging. Scarlett has a bunch of positive things she tells herself that helps her to be kind, to be strong, to be brave, face her fears and do big things. This is a great book for encouraging children to believe in themselves, to be brave, and to try new things. If you are looking for an encouraging book to help a shy, frightened child to try or to reach out and make new friends, then this is a book to consider. I was given a copy free and all opinions are my own.

Scarlett practices affirmations with her mom every day. "I am beautiful, I am strong, I am kind, I am going to have a good day, I am brave, and my future is bright." Sometimes she doesn't feel those things, but when she remembers her affirmations she digs deep and does her best.
Based on a real life mother daughter duo this book is full of heart, beautiful illustrations, and kind lessons for young readers. I wish this book was around when I was a young reader. I'm happy that kids these days have beautiful books to teach them social emotional skills.

I’m Going to Have a Good Day!: Daily Affirmations with Scarlett by Tiania Haneline is an awesome book that helps kids feel their worth. I enjoyed the affirmations that are in the book. I believe that I’m Going to Have a Good Day!: Daily Affirmations with Scarlett would be great for any reading session. Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for the opportunity to read this book. My review is also on Goodreads.
