Focuses more on the crime than romance and is a bit darker than others from Lee. I enjoyed it, and there were some sexy scenes 🔥🔥🔥, but the conflict between them was resolved fairly early on and the rest focused on the crime/mystery plot. There was very little build up or romance, it was just conflict resolved, okay we are in love and good. There were some nice things about how they loved and supported each other now, but I wanted more of an arc I guess. And it is one of those second chance romances that if they had just talked (apparently even once or a little) in the past, then none of this would have occured in the first place, and I always have some problems with that storyline. Maybe if they had a meaningful conversation about that now, it would have helped. I don't know. It was mildly aknowledged inwardly, but I felt it could have been addressed better.
Also, he seemed to recover from years of hard prison quite easily, to the point where his personality seemed lighter and more gregarious, for lack of a better word, than even before he went to prison. It just felt off to what was described as his natural personality, which could be explained by things looking up for him, but still felt not quite right in the scheme of things.
It did finish off the series nicely, and overall was an enjoyable read. Looks like Rourke will be getting his own book in a new series, but I am wondering if Althea will also (since Lee's books seem to usually/always? be connected in the same world and with Scarlett Scott's as well). Would also love to see Bull get his story once he grows up. He was a great character.
