Valerie Law is back in another FBI serial killer case. Can she keep her personal life from wrecking her personal one?
Mmm I just don’t know about this series. I decided to give it another chance and honestly I think I am done. While the audio version didn’t have so many mistakes as the last one, there were still a few mistakes in the reading. Definitely not as bad as the last time but still could have been caught in the editing process. Next I cannot tell if I am being unfairly biased by the readers accent or this book is truly written by a European. There were too many things that just didn’t jive with American FBI agents or even America all together. For instance, Valerie called her co-workers dear and love. This isn’t very typical. She also asked them if they wanted tea while they were in the hospital. Also not a usual activity. The FBI also broke down several doors without saying FBI blah blah blah.. at least according to all our TV and movies this is illegal entry into a home. These are just a few of the inconsistencies.
The story was just ok. Valerie and her team are not really connecting with me. I also thought the killer was kind of superficially angry and narcissistic.
I'm struggling between 3 and 4 stars. It's a good story. I'm trying to decide if the negative I'm feeling is because I listened to the audiobook which was read by a British woman who read even the happiest moments as if she was just revealing an unsolved spooky mystery or if it's the book itself. I'm going with 4, though, cuz I think it may have been the reader. 😆
I freaking love Maria Cusick as the narrator. Have my heart, Ms. Cusick. You're great and make my drives so much better ♡
Pierce did a great job keeping my attention lol I love that this book had better pacing than the first book. No Mercy had a somewhat too-good-to-be-true ending simply because the pacing felt rushed towards the end, but I felt that No Pity was perfectly paced :)
The one complaint I have is that Pierce really made me think that , not just once, but twice! Smh. I love it lolol On to the next one!
The story line was okay. I listened to the audio version of this book. While not great, it passed the time while I was driving, hiking and working on my laptop. FBI Profiler tracking a serial killer with her partner and a psychiatrist who comes along to help. She is struggling with personal family problems and wonders if she'll go crazy like her sister and mother. She's having a hard time staying focused on the case while worrying about her own mental wellness. A few irritating moments in the unraveling of the plot (things that will make you say "that is not what an FBI agent would do" or "at least ask for a photo of the daughter before you confirm that she is the brutally murdered woman"), but all in all okay.
I do however have issues regarding English (UK) slang vs English (American) slang. This is supposed to be AMERICAN FBI Agents - speak with American slang/terms, not British.
While I didn't reduce my rating because of the audio, I felt it deserved a review also.
The narrator, and I've listened to MANY different narrators, I just can't like her for a few reasons.
First (and not to harp on the language thing, but...) - she's British so everything she reads is in the British way if saying things. If these were British agents, or it was centered in the UK, then it would be a different thing altogether, but it's not. As a narrator, her job is to speak in the accent of the characters she's portraying.
Second - her exaggerated speech was beyond necessary most of the time. She seemed to put emphasis on words or phrases that were definitely not required and made no sense to read something that way. And then she didn't noticeably change her tone when there should have been radical changes due to the situation.
Third - I believe a very important role of a narrator is to separate character voices. EVERYONE sounded exactly the same when speaking. Man, woman, thoughts .... every voice was the same.
Valerie keeps her past hidden from her boyfriend, her partners, and just about anybody else in her life. She is facing a deranged serial killer who is committing ominous crimes making Valerie doubt her capacity to put the killer behind bars. Her past is putting enormous pressure on her and her team feels it. How will she deal with all those issues plus her job? I am looking forward to reading the next story in this series. I received a free copy of this book from the author and this is my unbiased opinion.
Reading this on a week where I am having the worst flare up that is very painful and making me the grumpiest version of myself! Honestly, opened kindle as a distraction and wasn’t expecting to finish a book!
This is the second book in the Valerie Law series, it’s not a particularly long book but it still packs a punch.
I enjoyed the turmoil raging in Valerie and how that impacted her ability to do her job correctly. I also enjoyed the way the killer P.O.V chapters played out and the insight they gave.
Beware that this was written by a woman, not a man. I know because most of the storyline is about "feelings". So if you're a fan of procedurals, action and intrigue, this may not be for you. I was able to grind through it by skimming past the angst. I'd give it 3 stars but I'm dinging it because the publisher fooled me by using what appears to be a masculine name. From what I gleaned by searches, "Blake Pierce" may be a pseudonym for a bunch of women writers. Fool me once ...
In this book we follow FBI agent Valerie Law as she investigates the case of the self titled “Bone Ripper”
The murder seems to have ties to the newspaper, could it be a reporter, an editor, a delivery courier, a photographer or maybe just an avid reader? Let’s hope they solve the case in time before he kills enough people to make himself famous.
Bone Ripper was kind of sadistic in his killings but Valerie being the awesome FBI profiler she is and her partner Charlie and psychologist Will they figure out who he is and bring him to justice! It’s another wonderful book in this series and I can’t wait to read the next one!
The villain in this book was very interesting and real like, however, the book dragged a little bit. But even though there was a lot of dragging time, it was still a good story and very interesting. Onto the next one.
The story was fine - the narrator was annoying. Why would you have a narrator with a British accent read a book about an agent in the American FBI. I'm not sure I'll read another one in this series.
Thrilling, edge of your seat tracking down a serial killer, brutal and horrific. Very good but far too short. great characters and development. Loved it.
Valerie Law and her partners, Agent Charlie Carlson & Dr Will Cooper, are called to hunt down a serial killer who is trying to make himself be famous. The three work well together and start piecing the clues together. Valerie has things in her past that makes her think she could turn out to be like her mother and sister who are both mentally unstable. She keeps all of this locked up inside not even telling her boyfriend. This book keeps you turning pages until the end. Loved it!
Jeez this series is addictive! The second is as page turner as the first one! So now will have no other choice to buy the third to find out more about the character! Thanks to the author for sharing his great talent!
