Do you like to compete? Honestly, I don't really enjoy it but I think a lot of people do. The World's Longest Sock by Juliann Law is a story of a competition to knit the world's longest sock.

The World's Longest Sock is a nicely made and illustrated book, suitable for gift-giving with a dust jacket, measuring almost 9 by 11 1/2 inches and 32 pages long. It is fun story about two people trying to win the world record for the world's longest knitted sock--in different parts of the world. Initially, they aren't aware of each other. Then when they find out about the other one getting the coveted title, they start competing furiously. The World's Longest Sock is a fun story and could create some interesting conversations with children.

A fun knitting competition between a Chilean grandma and a lumberjack from New Zealand. Who will knit the longest sock? A satisfying ending, too.

The Longest Sock?

Nina and Chuck do not know each other, and live in two different parts of the world. But they each knit. Nina has knitted a giant sock, that she adds a row to each time she makes a sale in her shop. She is sure her sock is the longest in the world.

Chuck, a lumberman in a forest, also knits. He didn't pay attention to his knitting while watching television and now he has a very long sock.

One day, Chuck heard on tv that Nina had gotten the award for the world's longest sock. But Chuck knew his was longer.

Both Nina and Chuck wanted the award, so they began trying to out-knit each other, with lots of funny results. Who will win?

This picture book is geared toward children four to seven-years-old. Little ones will love the bright colors and silly situations Chuck and Nina face--and will have a good time guessing who will win. In addition to this being fun to read, this five-star tale also teaches cooperation, and working together. This book has lots of humor, some will even give adults a chuckle or two. I recommend it!

What a fun little book! The story starts in Chile with Nana Nina who owns her own sock shop. In order to celebrate each sale she adds a new row to a sock and the sock just grows and grows. Eventually she's declared the world record holder for the longest sock.

Meanwhile Chuck in New Zealand has been happily knitting away during his quiet evenings at home. He's lonely and knitting helps pass the time. When he hears of Nina's accomplishment he decides to try for the record himself.

The story goes on to tell about the support of each individual's community of friends and family. The award goes back and forth until eventually the two are declared the winners of the longest PAIR of socks.

It's a fun way to talk about healthy competition and also how to come together to make something happen. The story is cute but I also have to mention how darling the illustrations are. This book would make a lovely addition to your family's personal library. I would even use it for a gift.

Kids are often interested in world records. When I was a librarian, I couldn’t keep the Guiness Book of World Records on the shelves. I think The World’s Longest Sock could become a favorite. It tells the fictional story of two knitters in different parts of the world who compete to make the world’s longest sock. I love the solution to this competition.
The one thing I don’t like about the book is the reference to Zombie movies. To me that does not seem appropriate for a book meant for younger elementary children.
Juliann Law wrote the story and illustrated it. Her illustrations are well-done. The book could be included in a Mock Caldecott competition as it does qualify for the award.
Because of my concern about the reference to Zombies, I cannot recommend The World’s Longest Sock for a k-12 Christian school library. I encourage librarians to read the book and make their own decision about including it in their library.
I received a complimentary copy of The World’s Longest Sock. This is my honest review.

The World’s Longest Sock is a story about a fierce competition between Nana Nina and Chuck. Nina loved kitting and she made socks for our whole family and opened up her own sock business. One day, she was determined to win the award for the world’s longest sock. Chuck sees the news coverage and wants to win the award and take the crown away from her. They battle it out in order to prove that they can win. It gets off control and they both have health issues from trying to outdo the other person. But there can only be one real winner.

I would recommend this touching book to children aged 3-7. It’s a very exciting competition between Nina and Chuck and it leaves children wondering who will end up winning the award for knitting the world’s longest sock. I personally loved how they acted a manly lumberjack type of character for Chuck and how this would go against the typical stereotype of man knitting for fun. I thought this was a unique touch for the book to display that anyone is free to live their life however they choose and had a great message. I loved the designs in this book and how colorful each one of them are.

The World's Longest Sock is a book for elementary school children. It has a dust jacket, which you hardly ever see in children's books anymore. But, I suggest you take the dust jacket off because the book's cover is filled with fascinating information on "The World's..." biggest, oldest, highest, and more.

This is a fun book about the competition between Nina, a knitter in Chile and Chuck, a knitter in New Zealand. When Nina gets the award for the World's Longest Sock, Chuck decides that he's going to make a longer sock. The competition gets out of hand when both Nina and Chuck begin to suffer the consequences of knitting all of the time.

What happens in the end is a wonderful compromise to what began as a healthy competition. Your child will be on the edge of their seat waiting for the final outcome.

Do you want to read a book about a really long sock? Yes. Yes you do. And this book has TWO really long socks. If you think socks are boring, you would be wrong. This is an action packed story about two completely different people on opposite sides of the planet who, unbeknownst to each other, are both trying to make the world’s longest sock. And once they learn it’s a competition things get pretty heated. You may even take sides. And then you’ll change sides like 10 times before it’s over. Juliann Law has filled this story with charming characters and bright, colorful illustrations brimming with so many fun details. Who will win the competition? I’m not telling. But I will say that this book has the most satisfying ending I’ve read in a while and gently reminds us that no matter how different we think we are from one another, we really are all the same.

This book presents a competition between two knitters in different parts of the world. Who will win the world record for the longest hand-knit sock? The book has a surprise and happy ending.
The book is well illustrated but I think the storyline is lame.
I'm not sure I'd recommend spending $20 on this book.

The World's Longest Sock is a picture book about two characters from different parts of the world who have a competitive passion for knitting. Nana Nina owns a sock shop in Chile while Chuck is a lumberman in New Zealand. They compete to gain the title of the World's Longest Sock. A fictional judge narrates the story of these two characters who just won't quit. The conflict is resolved with judgment to share.

I looked for some back material to see if this was based on a true story, but it appears that the Guinness World Record for the longest knitted sock belongs to an Ashan Fernando in Berkley, Massachusetts.

While the book could be used to inspire an introduction into knitting and it was interesting to see two different knitting styles represented, I did not fully care which character won the competition. I wanted to care more about the individual characters than I did. I liked that the lonely lumberjack found a family through his fame, but there was not much else to develop him or Nana Nina.

The illustrations represented two locations that varied in color tones and landscape. There were also a diverse cast of characters represented in the towns.

This is a cute picture book that I enjoyed reading with my son. Nana Nina and Chuck end up in a competition to knit the longest sock in the world. Who will win the contest?

This can be a good book to use to talk about working together. Also, it has a nice ending.

One negative I found that I want to mention is the use of the word "heck." I know to some it isn't a big deal and a common word said by many; however, I did not find it appropriate to use in a children's book. It was totally unnecessary and could have been fine without it.

This book will be enjoyed by primary-early elementary aged children.

I received a copy of this book from Hachette book group for my honest review. Thank you.

One feisty shop owner starts knitting a row for every sale at her sock shop and soon she is sure she has the longest sock in the world. Across the world, a lonely man who knits just to relax gets news of her award and contests it, sparking the longest and most intense knitting competition the world has ever known. Who will win the ultimate sock standoff, and is winning really the most important thing?

I love knitting books, and this one has just the right touch of whimsy to make it a delight to read.

A fun-to-read, well-illustrated, book for children. The author is also the illustrator. Full of interesting facts and illustrations. The illustrations are interesting because they help to tell the story. I have enjoyed reading this book to my grandchildren. Over and over. :) And each time I read it I see something for the first time. (Be sure to look at the back of the book's hardcover, ie. inside the paper cover!)

What a cozy feel-good story! I love every last detail of this book — the puns, the humour, the beautiful message at the end. This will definitely go down in history as one of my favourites. I've never been part of a world record, but now I want to be! The illustrations are a delight as well. The contrast between the two main characters is well-thought out and each have their own emotional arc that tie up in the end — very hard to do in a picture book! Highly recommend this one!

Two people from very different parts of the world are both determined to knit the world's longest sock. This is a highly readable nonfiction book inspired by the author’s kids playing in the snow and her own real world record experiences. I love the illustrations. I love the story. And I love the ending.

This book is so cute and has such a clever, satisfying ending. I loved the page that illustrates that Nina was not only determined to knit the longest sock, she also sheared her sheep, carded the wool, dyed it, and spun it herself! This book is perfect to inspire kids to take up a craft like knitting and to have fun getting wrapped up in the joy of creating.
