Fledgling God #4

Buried Mage

Rate this book
The Gathering only lasted for seven days, but it ended up being a lot more of an adventure than Jason had expected. Now it’s time to head home, and Jason is excited to sleep in his own bed and hang out with John, Tyler, and Annabeth again.

Jason learned a lot, and he’s eager to put that knowledge to use. If his ideas work, it could totally revolutionize how Sandy and the crew make charms—allowing them to heal, train, and defend the House even better than before.

So when the rotten mages show up, Jason is still feeling confident in himself and his new knowledge.

He has a new shield. He’s fought for his life in the arena. His matrix is much denser than before.

He’s a warrior mage now and stronger than ever before.

What could possibly go wrong?

NOT the author of any books on debts, finance, law or medicine!

My first career was a gunslinger.
At 10 years old I learned everything I needed to know from Louis L'Amour and after rigorous practice in front of my bedroom mirror, I was ready to take on the bad guys. Later, I became a spy after reading some Tom Clancy - and infiltrated the kitchen and the living room and learned all the secrets available from living in a small trailer.
I finally found my true calling when I became a White Wizard and saved Middle Earth. Gandalf took me on as his apprentice and we had many adventures together. I rubbed elbows with Harry Dresden and the Iron Druid, but I always wanted to make my own world.
Finally, Jason, a down on his luck poker player with mage potential showed up, and together we create a whole new supernatural world based in Louisville Kentucky. Now I have the best job of all. I tell stories about the plucky band of adventurers and the strange and wonderful house they inhabit.
It’s a good life and a fun times!

You ever love a series so much that you start reading the book the minute it is released, but one chapter in you want to slow your reading speed to a crawl, so you can avoid finishing it too fast? I knew the book hangover was going to be fierce when I finished this one, and I was right. C'mon Mr. Taggart. Write faster. A book a week is an acceptable pace! If you are going to keep ending each book with a cliffhanger hook into the next one, you have a responsibility to your fans to embue yourself with some speed-writing magic. Can you make a soul creation for yourself for that one? I love/hate you for leaving me hanging!

Like the previous 3 books, this one was once again a thoroughly enjoyable read. As I said in my review of the previous book, I love the recap at the beginning, the vivid imagery presented through detailed description, and the vast amount of attention given to editing and proofreading (only caught 2 mistakes in this one!).

This book was a little different in that there was less time spent with Jason's supporting PEOPLE and more time focused on his supporting characters (Eggy, Penny, the creations, etc.). A good chunk of the book was an internal journey that we have caught glimpses of in the past. We also didn't see a sudden and substantial upgrade to Jason 4.0 like we saw in each previous book. However, the foundation was definitely laid for this to happen. Instead, this book was more about Jason getting more comfortable in his new skin (hah!), and learning how to take all he has learned so quickly from previous books, and internalize it (hah, again! A great pun is it's own reword! Except I guess this is more of a double entendre than a pun...).

Anyway, another solid addition to the series. A great conclusion to this story arc, and a frustrating glimpse what we now have to wait for in the next installment.

P.S. I personally appreciate the addition of a little more smut in this one, and would love all the filth to be in more explicit detail. However, I think what was included in this book is enough to edit your Google tags at the beginning to take out "teen". I think think there was enough on-page detail and ennuendo to make it "new adult" level. Just my opinion though!

Utterly Fabulous, a Must Fantasy Read

Rating: 5 🌈

Well, this just got way more fabulous and complicated!

Buried Mage immediately corrects the one issue I had with Gathering Mage, and that’s where the author had divided that section of his 2-part story. He’d gone past their arrival home and into new events when it made sense to stop at their arrival.

Buried Mage has at the beginning the Cliffs Notes versions of the preceding books to catch you up if you need a refresh and then we ( and those fantastic characters) all together, start at the moment when Sandy and Jason return from the Gathering, having come through stronger and with new powers due to the trials and events that occurred there.

It’s time for them to get caught up with everything and everyone who was left behind at the House. It’s a great way too , for the author to reacquaint the readers with all the characters who were missing for a story, except for a mention or two.

Now with one celebration, it’s found family time , and we get to embrace our fondness for them and the quirky House as well . Plus we get to meet another Companion. Mr. Tubbles, Tyler’s worn and torn older cat. He’s a real enigma.

But soon Jason and the House of Louisville are off and running as they, with Jason as the spark , start to experiment with new forms of combat, enhancing it with their own magic abilities , including runes they make, experimenting through techniques they picked up with glasswork. Great stuff here. This is so simplified because the book ‘s elements regarding this are fun, and complex. I enjoyed every bit . Those who want a boom and the magic wand does the trick?
Hmmm , no. This really isn’t the book or series for you. Why?

All this is described in fascinating, wildly imaginative details! The characters are excited about what’s happening, and we’re along with them every step of the way, as they fail and as they finally succeed.

Taggert has quite the imagination and it’s full of humor. His grannies, his ass blasters, the miners and surfer dudes! Love each and every one! Plus the respect that Jason shows his creations. I’m hoping that really comes into play further down the series because that’s such a joyous element.

Naturally, the villains, Marius and Karl, that have been lurking the past novels come back horrifically here. They are some very nasty pieces of work .

No spoilers but again some incredible scenes, Jason goes through terrifying trials that shove him up into the growth he needs , essentially, to power up. But , wow, painful. Very gripping and so well written that it keeps us on the edge til it’s over.

Truly, the synopsis just can’t do justice to what you’re going to find inside this story. It’s a bit like saying “oh, Moby Dick? Ah yeah, it’s got a whale.”

Buried Mage has at the least …a magical sword that wants to be a vase, zombies students, evil villains, adorable cats, tiny Magical Grannies who suck up magic, a House that gives you a family and everything you want…for a price. And so much more.

I will say we get a great conclusion to this 2-book mini arc and a very fun slide which will start the next 2 book arc (that’s the format the author seems to prefer).

This series, which has a fifth book coming, is addicting. It’s ever expanding universe, a growing cast of amazing people and beings who continue to develop personally and in their relationships.

I’m so sold!

That means I’m highly recommending the entire series to date, which should be read in the order they were written.

Happy Reading!

I was a little bit disappointed of this book. It’s mostly like the first and second book combined with Jason being in his thoughts all time, being happy and trying to find out more of his strengths and weaknesses. Nothing spectacular that’s why most of the time I skip some pages to get to the highlight of the story.
I would still recommend this book for the continuity of the story and still curiously and anxiously waiting for the next book.

I still love the characters and am very much looking forward to book 5, but this was my least favourite of the series so far. There was a lot more sex in this book than in the previous books and it distracted from the main storyline.
I read this series for the magic and Jason's approach to improving his magic and that of this friends. I love the author's approach to magic in this series. I have no problem with the one or the other sex scene, but in this book it felt like the balance was slightly off. I also felt sorry for Annabeth as the only one without a partner.
I can't wait to see what happens in book 5

Jason's little happy dances start to make a lot of sense cause I do one every time I discover another fledgling god book.
Since I had a little more free time, I finished it in only 2 days.

With this book, an arc has come to a close. The rotten mages are finally gone and Jason has bonded more with his powers.
Sandy and LRM are just a massive power couple (pun intended). Wondering if Annabeth could get more powerful if she sang her own songs. And Tyler is just as hot as ever.

I know it's still early but starting to hope for a little house expansion.
Curious about what the wider magical society will bring in the next adventure.

Potential officially wasted

It’s seems the motivation/inspiration for the author has changed. What began as an interesting and detailed story has devolved into sentimental boredom. This novel and the last seem to center around the MCs feelings and interaction with his creations and household. Frankly it’s annoying we get it your gay, we get it you love your family and magic. I’m a gay dude and the constant need for the MC to actually say obvious things about himself and how he feels is getting on my nerves. The magic is horrible in this novel. All the beautiful expected growth from book one and two is not here, and all the action boils down to essentially brawling with a little boost. There is almost zero originality in any of the magic in addition to the MC being functionally useless. It’s honestly turned into just another basic gay erotica with a slight fantasy twist. Instead of merely representing the MC and our community in an organic relatable magical fashion, the author has turned to clichés, forced humor, and substandard magic system.

Incredibly unique and interesting. Five stars!!!!

It's one of those stories that captured you on the first chapter.

You so wrapped up in it that towards the end you on the verge of tears because it's about to end.

Everything from the characters to the storyline was incredibly. You felt if all, the love, passion, bond, betrayal and hatred. You felt yourself rooting for the good guys and girls. I absolutely love an happy ending, but I love it even more when I get to read the next stage in this wonderful story.

Please🙏 keep going, and I know that all good things must come to an end at some point. So you'll understand if I'll sit back and enjoy every minute of it!!

APPLAUSE all-around LOVE IT!!!!

Jason and company are battling it out against the Louisville mages, and things don't go according to plan as always. Jason decides to follow one of the mages back to their lair, thinking he could take him out since he was by himself. Jason gets a surprise and has to find a way to survive until his friends can see and rescue him. While Jason is trapped, he learns more about his powers and has the time to detail his constructs to make them as strong as possible.

I enjoyed this one just as much as the previous books. We learned more about how the "house" supernaturals interact with the other supernaturals in the world learned more about Jason's abilities. There were times when the book moved slowly, but I didn't mind since the author was developing more of the world.

The fourth book in the series, Buried God takes an initial step back from the total action of the third novel in order to let us spend time in the House with Jason and his friends, learning more about them while they, in turn, learn more about their magaical skills and abilities. It's a peaceful time, highly enjoyable and so tempting to spend even more time there with them all. However, all things peaceful in the magical world have to come to an end and the story takes sudden flight into intense action. Buried God is exuberant, lively, intense, fun, lovable, whimsical and, above all, highly readable.

This is the fourth book in the : Fledgling God Book Series .

Another great read I have to say that I was so excited and happy that I could jump right into book four after finishing book three . What a wonderful surprise known to my review Mr tubble's my new favorite he's the strong silent type but he gets his point across . And of course Bermuda is always a rock star but I'm so glad that this arch is over with those rotten mage's that was brutal to read . And I'm excited for the next installment in this exciting series .

He Does It Every Time

Every time I read a book in the Fledgling God series, it always hits the mark. The adventure, the puzzles, the feeling of home with our favorite characters all combine to make each book a fun, fantastic read. I love the audio books as well! This is one of those series that I will come back to for comfort reading often. You're going to love this installment as we finally get to see the resolution of a long-standing major issue. I am so excited to see where Michael takes the story from here! You can bet your boots I'll be watching the Youtube reads as the next book proceeds.

Another enjoyable book with all the strengths of the prior works. You'll probably like this novel if you like character-focused fiction.

I felt there were some pacing issues, particularly in the beginning. Even though this is book four, it's still good to have a hook at the start, to drag the reader into the story. Instead, we are treated to several chapters of the author pampering his protagonists.

Final thought: Is it just me, or is it strange that the house-based magical community doesn't communicate much?

Awesome book series

I have extremely loved this series. The story is so unique and refreshing. I thought book 4 was the finale but glad to see there will be a book 5 and I can’t wait. I don’t leave reviews often as each person likes different tales but this is a series that ALL can enjoy. I look forward to reading more!

A series to be read and savored

This book wrapped up the adventure well. It kept the flow going and no lag happened. By this fourth book you are invested in the characters. The characters are real and have flaws that make you root for them more. I hope that the writer will give us more adventures with these characters. I would like to see their relationships grow.

Couldn't out it down - prepare to lose some sleep

An action packed adventure with great characters to both love and hate. The epic battle between good and bad, made it impossible to put it down until I knew the good guys will be okay. The soul creations and magical developments just get better and better in each book. Great for readers that like to nerd-out with magic and who get the importance of cats.

Another awesome page turner

Love the series, read it in less than 36 hours. I love the sense of whimsy that Jason has with his creations. Please keep up the amazing work and for new readers: You will love the wonderful, creative, adventurous world that is awaiting to suck you in (only Tyler can do it better)

and it continues…

This story just keeps getting better and better. For sheer wonder, this one isn’t as good as the 3rd book (but really how could it be?), but it does a very good job at remaining inventive and entertaining while cleaning up some loose ends, and right before dropping a new bomb on the situation. Ha! I already fell in love with this story a while ago, but now I’m beginning to truly love Taggart and his writing! Keep it up and bring on more, please

Yet again!! Please do not stop writing!

Thank you for being buried LOL Ps. I want to see that House! Those soul creations and runes have me fascinated! It was interesting that much of the action was internal to himself. It made for some lovely self discovery and development! I enjoy his interactions with his soul creations and their enthusiasm in return.

I can't wait for the next title in this series!

Dude if you stop writing i will hunt you down and sit on you!! LOLOLOLOL

Thank you

Michael, I'd like to say congrats on your new release! Of course I enjoyed it immensely! What book are you reading in the profile picture? There's a field in the background and you are sitting in a chair reading under a street light.
This one was full of mystif, and puns! I loved the playful side of our crew! Looking forward to part 5!

loving this series!

I keep thinking that this delving into minutiae of soul creations is going to be boring, but Taggart always ties it all together with exciting fight scenes and drama. Enjoying the pacing with the grannies an, miners and surfer dudes. The cast of characters is fun and the super natural world he’s creating is great. Since the first book I’ve been hooked!

I love, love, loved this journey!

I don’t have the word to explain how much I love this series. It is now precisely 00:01, I have to go to work in a few hours, but goodness me I couldn’t stop reading until the very last page.

I love these characters so much, and every book is and adventure I just don’t want to end. I love the growth of not only Jason but all of the rest of the family.

As I have said before, it is the world building for me, and all the rest is mwah!! chefs kiss!

I cannot wait to see what happens next.

I continue to be fascinated by how much activity is packed into relative non activity. No spoilers, but the soul creations and throne room are the heroes of this story. And I love them

I've read the first 4 books and keep coming back. They're fun, well written, have good character development, and long enough that I don't finish them in my usual 90 minutes like most books. Keep them coming!
