This is book 1 in her Ladies on their Own series. It follows Honora Gregory who has been appointed as her aunt's companion because her father is having financial difficulties and cannot fund her own season. Her widowed aunt, Lady Langdon , however is in town shopping for a new husband. She meets Robert Crampton a newly minted Earl and this is their hea.

This is an enemies to lovers trope and the initial parts of the story dwell into their many run-ins. Honora is a plain speaking girl, and Robert doesn't like it at all. There's a minor suspense filled plot to add to the thrill factor of this book.

Robert is quite a distasteful character, arrogant and pompous. I couldn't like him till he starts reflecting on his behaviour and slowly starts changing. Nora and Lady Langdon are both fine characters. What I find lacking is a chemistry between the mcs..

As a plot, it follows the normal path most Ms. Pearson's plot lines follow. She truly walks the much treaded path..

This is a decent start to a series and am curious to see how she connecrs the books together.

Sent to be her aunt’s companion by an impoverished father, Miss Honora Gregory struggles against disappointment and loneliness. Now in London, Honora’s selfish, self centred aunt Lady Langdon seeks only her own entertainment and Honora is forced into the background & belittled at every turn. Blunt and forthright, she does not hide her true opinion despite her lowly status. When she wagers with her aunt for one night as a niece not a companion her aunt agrees giving Honora one opportunity of finding a gentleman to court her. Robert, the Earl of Crampton didn’t expect to be an Earl & finds his place in society daunting but hides behind arrogance. Even though Honora is only a companion, Robert finds himself caught up with her, angry at her manner towards him. When someone begins to bring trouble to Robert’s door, he is astonished to find that Honora is the one by his side.
The start of a new series & a well written read which flowed well. The characters were well portrayed & had depth, I really liked Honora who stood up for herself & was kind & caring even though she hadan awful lot to put up with. Robert irritated me no end & several times I wanted to shake him but as his backstory emerged I grew to like him more & more but Honora certainly had her work cut out with him as he was definitely a work in progress. I absolutely loathed Lady Langdon & couldn't believe the way she humiliated Honora at every opportunity – horrid woman. There’s some mystery & intrigue concerning Robert, which added to my enjoyment. I enjoyed their journey to a HEA & would have liked an epilogue to confirm how Robert finally became the man he should be
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

A self centered Earl and a young lady with no choice except to be her selfish aunt's chaperone, keep having unpleasant confrontations. On his part, not hers. He developes a conscience and is constantly apologizing for his behavior. She accepts his apologies believing he is sincere. There is a growing feeling of affection between them. It gives her hope he might save her from a lonely life. She will save him from someone with a dangerous grudge. Very clean regency romance, not even a kiss.

Great start to the series. The characters were all relatable.
Miss Gregory, Honora, was faced with an uncertain future because of the financial difficulties her father faced. She was certain she would never see London, let alone a season for herself. So, when her aunt showed up with the offer to make her a companion, she went along with it. Her aunt was less than charitable about her offer though, treating Honora horribly, embarrassing at every opportunity.
Honora was able to make a good ally with Lady Albina, who helped her to push for more than what her aunt was allowing. An opportunity that a daughter of a peer should have had.
Robert, the earl of Crampton, is new to his title and very insecure. He grew up the son of a merchant, so he struggles with feeling worthy enough. He puts on a bit of airs as they say in order to put off a more entitled persona, and when behaving that way, he insults Honora on more than one occasion.
It takes his newfound friend, Lord Venable, and the very forthright Honora to make him see the error of his misguided ways. I appreciated that we didn’t have to experience him acting that way for long or he may have been one of those H’s who you didn’t want to root for.
The antagonist in this book is a not really a surprise, what was a surprise was that despite how heinous she was, the things she tried to do, they forgave her way to easily.
I look forward to the next in the series. Lady Albina perhaps?

Odd.

Honoria, forced to be her aunts companion, rather than have her own season, travels to London. Her aunt constantly belittled her and believes her niece so far below her notice, treats Nora badly and refused to allow her a season, or to be treated by others as the lady she is.
On first night out as a companion, they literally bump into Compton, an arrogant, unlikable man with a jumped up attitude no one can admire.

Odd incidents keep happening to Compton, who has has a complete turn around, and now actively seeks out Nora despite her being only a companion, who he is invariably rude to, and he apologizes every time they meet which is far too frequently for an Earl and a companion.
Nora's aunt continues to treat her like dirt yet constantly escorts her to inappropriate meetings with the earl.

Just didn't like the characters or understand what little plot there was. Usually quite like this author, this book not up to usual standard.

The Companion and The Arrogant Earl

This book sets off the new series Ladies on Their Own: Governesses and Companions. This first book is about a young lady, Miss Honora Gregory, whose father is a Viscount and he has fallen on some difficult times due to crop failures. He cannot give his only daughter a Season but her aunt has requested that Honora accompanies her to London to act as her companion. I truly disliked this selfish self centered aunt who was only concerned with finding herself a new husband. Everywhere they went Honora was required to be by her side and at each event her aunt always introduced her as her companion. Even though this was a very difficult situation, I liked that Honora was still true to herself and she could be outspoken in situations which was totally unacceptable in a companion. They were to melt into the background. The person she was the most outspoken with was The Earl of Crampton. From the first time they met, she saw him as an arrogant, prideful man. As the Season progresses they have many altercations and the Earl has finally learned how to apologize for his unthoughtful actions.

Robert, the Earl of Crampton is not a very confident man. His becoming an earl is new to him and he wasn't raised to be the heir to an Earl. Saving the daughter of a Duke the previous Season brought him to the attention of the Ton as they praised his actions. So when Miss Gregory fails to give him the positive accolades he expects and instead berates him for his actions, he cannot get her out of his mind. He cannot believe that a companion would speak to him as she has done. He goes out of his way again and again to have interaction with her. When he is facing a threat to his life, he is surprised that it is Miss Gregory who comes to help him.

When Miss Gregory is given an opportunity for one evening to be a young lady of the Ton and not a companion will she find someone to fulfill her dreams or be deeply disappointed by those around her? Will she be able to help the Earl discover who is trying to hurt him?

Miss Honora Gregory, daughter of Viscount Greene had been looking forward to her first Season in London.
However, several years of difficulties on his estate, left Lord Greene with no money for a Season.

Honora’s aunt, Lady Langdon “kindly” offers to take Honora with her to London, but only as a companion. She is a self centred woman, who seems to take great delight in emphasising to Society that Honora is only a companion.

Honora meets Lord Crampton, who she finds rude, arrogant and prideful. Robert Crampton is a merchant’s son, who became an Earl due to being the last surviving male in the family. Unfortunately, his lack of education and previous status have made him anxious about being accepted by the ton. A service to a Duke’s family raises his profile but then it seems to go to his head.

Honora has several interactions with Lord Crampton. In her first, she gives him a good set down. As time goes on her blunt honesty gives Robert the push to reflect on his behaviour and try to improve. They each begin to appreciate the other.

Honora’s friend, Lady Albina encourages her to ask Lady Langdon for an opportunity to find a husband.
Lady Langdon tells her no one will be interested due to her lack of dowry, but offers her a wager. She gives her one evening, when her status is returned to her. If she can get three gentlemen to dance with her at the ball, Lady Langdon will give her a Season and present her to the Queen.
If she fails, she must continue as her companion and never speak to Robert again!

Robert comes across as an ass, but as he and we gain insight he improves. Even at the end of the book he is definitely still a work in progress

Honora is lovely and smart. Brave enough to take a chance.

Worth a read.

Utterly inspiring. I cannot imagine how Honora dealt with each of the blows that downtrodden her life. First was her father's situation at home. He could not provide a season for her. She was so disappointed. Her happiness was crumbling. She truly understood her father was not at fault for their situation. However, her father thinking he was helping her, he volunteered her as his sister Lady Langdon's companion. What a blow!!! Lady Langdon was a self-serving, insensitive, and selfish creature who delighted in putting Honora down below her standing. She expected Honora never to complain and to always follow her instructions. What a mean woman. Honora's friendship with Lady Albina gave Honora the strength and confidence although shaky to ask her aunt for one day to be her niece and not her companion. Lady Langdon imposed rules for this wager that she felt Honora would never accomplish. Now earlier Lady Langdon and Honora had a run in with the pompous Lord Robert Crampton. As time went on, he emotionally injured Honora over and over again. If he had not been truly remorseful, she would might have not forgiven him. Between Robert's friend, Lord Venables and Honora, they spoke true and honest with him. This was the beginning of Robert's self-reflection of how he had been behaving and treating others; he was ashamed. When Robert found that someone was out to cause him harm, he never suspected who it could be. It was Honora who put the pieces together to discover who it was trying to harm him. And she was correct. This led to a proposal to not only save Robert from being despised by the ton but led him to his true love. An amazing read. I highly recommend.

This is the first book in a new series by Rose, this being the first book I have mixed feelings about it.
I have read a ton of Roses books and liked most of them. You always know with her books you will get romance, mystery or some intrigue and strong characters.
I had a really hard time getting into this story. Lady Langdon, aunt to Lady Honora Green was one nasty
conceited, selfish person. She thought only of herself and not how her words hurt or embarrassed her niece. Honora has not had an easy life, losing her mother at a young age, then after bad seasons of weather her father is broke, with no way to give her a season. Her aunt offers to take her to London for the season but as her companion !! Letting her know no one would want her as all in the ton know of her father's problems and if they don't, she'll makes sure to tell them, ouch.
Instead of meeting a nice man enters Lord Crampton, Robert. He is so uptight about the ton accepting him now that he has inherited a title that is all he can see. He is rude, arrogant, prideful and stick up in general. Every time he meets or runs into Honora, he ends up putting his foot in his mouth them he
has to apology. Poor Honora is a really nice person, different from most young Lady's she speaks her mind whether you want to hear it or not.
These two have a really long road ahead of them what with their not liking each other, secrets on both parts and someone out to do real harm to Robert. The last part of the book is much better in my opinion then the first half. So, stick with it and you will like the ending. A little rushed but still good.
This is a very clean story for those who like to know. Will see what book two is like.
I received and ARC from the author and wish to thank her. This is my honest opinion and am freely giving it.

A lady’s companion surprisingly becomes an Earl’s betrothed.

“More Than A Companion” is the wonderful initial offering in Rose Pearson’s new “Ladies On Their Own” series. This book is another spectacular addition to Ms. Pearson’s library that continues to show her delightful writing talent and ability as a story teller. Her fantastically developed characters and moving narrative keeps the reader invested in the ultimate fate of the hero and heroine. As the first book in the series, it promises to bring future independent and surprising ladies unusual stories/ I can’t wait for the next installments. Do yourself a favor and don’t miss this book.
Miss Honora Gregory, the daughter of a struggling Lord whose finances can’t support her “Season” for her is very disappointed. Her aunt, the widowed sister of her father, asks Honora to be her companion in London while she seeks another husband among the gentlemen of the ton. As a companion, Honora would always be in the background having almost no interaction with society, but her singleminded and blunt personality does not hide her opinion of her status. As their first function, Honora encounters the rude self-centered, Robert, Earl of Crampton and she was less than impressed and very outspoken. Following additional somewhat stressful encounters between them and as trouble finds him, Robert is surprised that Honora is willing to assist him, and he sees her as a true lady and not as all as a companion. Read to book to find the solution to Robert’s dilemma and a potential HEA for both.

Author Rose Pearson's books more or less follow the same template. Both the hero and heroine have some failings and some obstacle to their happiness which they must endeavor to overcome; they eventually become interested in each other and there is a happily ever after.

More than a companion follows the same theme with a very likable heroine Honorary and not so likable hero Robert during the Regency era as always. Their first meeting is not very amiable and Robert's attitude does not endear him to Honorary. As the story progresses, we get to see how they eventually come together. Both of their characters are well-defined and their conflicts relatable.

Though I really hated Robert's character in the beginning of the story, I had actually grown to root for him. This goes to show the impressive story-telling style of the author; she manages to draw in the reader and see the characters as real people who may very well have lived in those times. Another great story from the author; can't wait to see whose story is the next in the series.

Honora and Robert . . .

Miss Honora Gregory did not have a chance to win the heart of a gentleman because her father took away that opportunity due to financial problems and sent her to be a companion for her aunt. She was not treated well there either, embarrassed by her aunt every chance she had to put her down in the eyes of society.

Robert, the Earl of Crampton, is struggling with this own issues. Growing up as the son of a merchant, he is insecure about how deserving he is of his title. Honora doesn’t appreciate the way he compensates for his insecurity by acting overly pompous, seeing him as arrogant and selfish. He, in turn, is angry at her attitude toward him. Yet she is the one who will stand by him when someone is trying to cause him harm. Will he give her a chance to prove to him that she is far more than a mere companion? Will they find their HEA together?

This is another clever and wonderful story by this author who is a favorite of mine. The characters evolved and grew in the story and certainly deserved any good that finally came to them, even if they had to work hard for it.

This story is a little different, and I rather enjoyed it! Honora was in London with her aunt, Lady Langdon, for the Season. However, she was to be her aunt’s companion instead of taking her rightful place on the marriage mart. Honora, her aunt and Robert had a disasterous first meeting, at which time Honora gave him a piece of her mind. Somehow that generated an interest in Robert and he sought out Honora’s company, mostly to apologize. Poor Robert, he spent most of the book with his foot in his mouth. When his wellbeing was in jeopardy, they banded together to solve the mystery. It is a rare man who can take feedback, analyze it, and make changes to become a better person….and Robert is that rare man. This story is one of personal growth and discovery for both Honora and Robert. The dialogue between the two of them is a critical component, and very well done. Ladies Langton and Charlotte each presented their own type of conflict which adds an additional layer to story.

This is the first book in a new series - Ladies on their Own: Governesses and Companions

Miss Honora Gregory is the daughter of Viscount Greene. She was looking forward to going to London for the season but because of some problems on the estate there was not enough money for that.

Her aunt – Lady Langdon offers to take her to London but only as her companion, Being only a companion she is not allowed to dance or get to know any of the gentlemen attending balls etc. Her aunt is selfish and continually emphasises that Honora is only a companion – thus putting her down.

When they meet Robert, the Earl of Crampton they find him to be rude and arrogant.
They meet several times more.
Can Robert get past his insecurities and act kindly?
Can Honora get her aunt to let her go to a ball as a lady instead of just a companion?

This is an easy to read sweet clean story. Although I did find it a bit slow at times, I enjoyed it in the end.

I know that when I start a book by Rose Pearson, I will feel many emotions and this one is no different. Anger at the way some of the characters are treated, sadness at their difficulties and, finally, happiness at them finally getting their own HEA are just a few of these emotions.

At first, I really disliked the male MC, but as the book progressed and I learned more about what made him the way he was, I began to like him a lot. The author did a great job in bringing the characters to life and revealing their personalities.

The book has all of the requisite elements of a good regency romance, including the balls, the fashions and the very stringent etiquette. Also, there is always a misunderstanding between the male and female main characters that reminds me of the 1940's romantic comedies. Ms. Pearson is one of my favorite authors when I am in the mood for a sweet, clean Regency romance.

The H is so arrogant and doesn't begin to lose that arrogance until over 55% of the book. You do begin to understand his lack of confidence but it was to late for me to care.

The h has been dealt a bad hand. Her father can't afford a season for her through no fault of his own. His sister takes the h in as a companion - there goes her hope for a family of her own. Her aunt makes sure everyone knows the kindness she is providing her niece. So many character's with no redeeming qualities.

There is an attempted murderer who did surprise me - nice twist I didn't see coming.

This is a clean story, little on romance. Two people who don't like each other but slowly find a way to friendship and respect. Didn't feel a connection to them.

No cheating, no cliffhanger, did like the honesty of the h, HEA, no romance and clean. (ljb)

Miss Honora wants a London Season but now knows it will not happen. She has mixed feelings when her Aunt decided to take her to London so She can try to find a second husband and wants Honora to accompany her as her Companion. The Earl of Crampton is looking forward to this season and hopes to still be the talk of the Ton. In his arrogance he slights Honora and her Aunt and the sparks fly. What will become of the Season now? At first glance I did not like the Earl due to his attitude and arrogance. I see how Rose Pearson has taken an unlikeable character and turned him around for the better. I just love how she can pull you into a story and keep you hooked.

Because Honora Gregory’s father is struggling financially because of crop failure and not because of a fault of his own, he has decided to have Honora travel to London to be a companion to her aunt. Her aunt makes no bones to announce the troubles of her father’s and that Honora is at each event as her companion and not to be treated in any other capacity. Robert, the Earl of Crampton, has his own problems and has not started off on a good foot with Honora and her aunt. They seem to always jump to the wrong conclusion and seem to be apologizing to each other. The surprise is when Robert finds she is on his side.

I didn’t like Robert, Lord Crampton nor Honoria’s aunt in the beginning. Both were self-centered and arrogant. Lady Langdon doesn’t really become any less so in the book, but Robert does realize the error of this ways and becomes more likable when he reveals his humble beginnings. Honoria was told repeatedly in public by her aunt that she is just a poor companion with no marriage prospects. Yet Lady Langdon could have sent Honoria back to her father when she finally stood up for herself and asked for a chance to make a match. There is the mystery of who wanted Robert ill. I had a feeling it was about revenge, but I didn’t know who until it was revealed. Working together to solve it brings brings Robert and Honoria closer.

Miss Honora Gregory is disappointed when her father tells her that he cannot afford a Season in London for her, but instead she is to go to London as her Aunt’s companion. Her Aunt is selfish and only thinks about herself. But so is Robert, the Earl of Crampton, whom Honora meets at her first ball and immediately takes a distaste to when she sees his attitude. Unusual circumstances draw Honora and Robert together even though Honora is forthright in telling Robert his faults of pride and arrogance. Watching the changes occur in the characters as the story progresses.

I always like a strong heroine willing to speak her mind. Honora Gregory is just that taking on the arrogant Earl of Crampton. She is the daughter of a Viscount but financial problems have prevented her from having a season of her own, so she goes to London, as her Aunt’s companion instead. Honora and Robert do not hit it off well in the beginning. She calls him out on his arrogance and he is angry at her manners, but in a time of need, she stands by his side. Some suspense and intrigue in this one, and a sweet romance.

More than a companion is Book1 in this new series.

Lady Langford has decided to hunt at the season for a new husband.
Honoria accompanied her as her companion.
They encounter the very arrogant Lord Crompton, who has just inherited his title.
At first it does not seem that these two will have enough in common, or be socially acceptable to society.

However despite a few problems, twists and turns. Eventually these two discover they are made for each other.

I have so enjoyed reading the book, it is very good.
I am looking forward to reading book 2 and the rest of this series.

Less than perfect people!

More than a Companion is an unusual book in that neither the hero nor the heroine is particularly likeable at first, being extremely self-involved and, in the hero's case, ill-mannered.
They do have the capacity for growth, however, and it is interesting to see them do so.
I am not aware of being a companion in the Regency being such a lowlt position that they are not to be recognized or conversed with. Indeed, I think any one who openly stigmatized and hedged about her niece the way the heroine's aunt did, would be heartily disliked by a great many.

This author has a formula of sweet regency romance with a bit of mystery to keep the plot engaging. The thing is, it works! I adore the characters she writes, each flawed and in need of growth but with a solid foundation at the core. The plot brings them closer together in this book first by proximity and then as they continue to converse it turns more romantic. I really dislike the aunt in this story as you will quickly learn for yourself what an incredibly unlikable person she is. This happy ending was rather rushed but i forgive her since that was rather the point. . I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
