If you love Kendrick this book is for you. It’s really good and interesting and has lots of insight into him and his work. It’s a little too detailed and repetitive if you’re just a casual fan. It’s a very magazine profile style of writing. Easy to read.

This provided a good glimpse of Kendrick's early career leading up to the projects that established him as one of the greatest rapper's we've ever had the privilege of experiencing. I was hoping for more "DAMN." discussion and what kind of lasting impact that may have left in the context of current Black America, but overall was an enjoyable and insightful read.

As a Kendrick Lamar fan, I LOVED this book!

Moore offers marvelous insight into how Kendrick the boy from Compton, became Kendrick, the voice of a generation, via his growth from underground rapper to mainstream mega-stardom.

Along the way, you get commentary as to how the changing racial and cultural landscape became part of Kendrick’s creative process; Kendrick sees the world and interprets its impact on him (and his people )through his music.

I’ve listened to every one of Lamar’s albums—including the ones from the K.Dot era—but now I’ll be listening to them with a discerning ear. Thanks to Moore’s phenomenal insight into the tracks we all know so well; particularly those from “To Pimp a Butterfly”.

Even if you’re not a Lamar fan, this is a book I think many will enjoy because it’s about so much more than just music—it’s about how one man uses music to communicate with his community and how that community, in turn, appreciates having a voice that speaks to their frustrations.

I just finished reading an advanced copy of this incredible book by the ever-brilliant Marcus Moore and I promise you, you want to preorder it now. It is no small task to write the first biography of someone as iconic as Kendrick Lamar but it’s no surprise Marcus Moore has met it head-on. This book is as important as its subject and an absolutely necessary read for anyone inspired and astounded by genius.

In my opinion Kendrick Lamar will sit in the pantheon of the greatest inspirational poets. There is a well laid case of racial and genre bias against Grammy judges. Moore did a good job of analyzing various works and educating the reader on the history of the rise of Top Dawg Entertainment and it's artists. I am skeptical of the Black Hebrew beliefs shared among artists such as Kenrick Lamar and Kodak Black. Durban, South Africa is going on my "places I must visit before I die" list.

This is definitely a must read for any Kendrick fan, as it takes you through his life from childhood through DAMN. He’s one of my favorite artists of all time, and I personally think a top 3 rapper of all time with the likelihood of top 1 when he hangs it up. I love how this breaks down his lyricism and artistry when it comes to his music, and gave me an even greater appreciation for his work. I’d love to read an update with Mr Morale, the Drake beef, and GNX (and possibly the Super Bowl), but this was so good.

I should have listened more to Lamar's music before I read the book. Some parts of the book are interesting while others offer too much detail. Lack of structure and coherence made give only three stars. I'm probably not the target audience for this book either, but reading it has definitely opened up my eyes for the brilliant parts of Lamar's music!

I know I say this all the time, but reading along with The Stacks Book Club is one of my favorite parts of my bookstagram experience. Last month’s pick, The Butterfly Effect: How Kendrick Lamar Ignited the Soul of Black America by Marcus J. Moore was, for me at least, the classic Stacks experience, i.e. reading a book I never would have picked up if not for the podcast. Music isn’t really my wheelhouse and I was almost entirely unfamiliar with Kendrick Lamar, but I still enjoyed reading this brief biography, which discussed both Lamar’s early career and rise to prominence as well as the way his music has been a part of the Black Lives Matter movement. I always prefer works of biography/history that progress chronologically, so I found it sometimes difficult to follow the timeline after this book jumped around a little at the beginning. The lengths of time spent on different periods of Lamar’s life to date felt sort of uneven too, but overall this was a pretty smooth and informative read. It was fun reading it while listening to To Pimp a Butterfly, especially cool when several times the chapters and songs lined up without intervention. Of course, best of all was the fascinating discussion the book sparked with The Stacks Pack.

A nice overview of Kendrick Lamar’s life and work.
My issue with it is that it’s marketed as a book length examination of To Pimp A Butterfly. Which it isn’t. TPAB only gets two chapters. It’s also not as deep as I was hoping. A lot of the info shared in the book is common knowledge for Lamar fanatics like myself.
It’s a good primer for the less initiated though.
Kendrick Lamar is the John Lennon of his generation and I’ll always appreciate insights and examinations into his life and his art.

This book exceeded my expectations, and I loved reading it. As a fan of Kendrick Lamar’s music, lyrics, and persona, I was eager to read a feel-good come-up story about his success as well as some analysis of his album projects. This author delivered on that, AND he contextualized Kendrick’s story and his work in the history and political environment of the US. He did this with well-researched accounts and high-quality detail. Highly recommended.

Finishing this book in the early hours of the morning of the most historic election in our nation’s history feels extremely appropriate. Seeing the way Moore is able to shed light onto the soul of Black people in America is moving and beautifully portrayed. A must-read for any Kendrick fan and anyone who enjoys reading art created by master story tellers.

I enjoyed reading about the early parts of his life/career but I did not particularly care to read about the political events of the past decade because I lived through them. I wish there was more lyric analysis and less over explanations of social issues. I would have preferred to read a book of Kendrick’s songs lyrics so that I could sit and analyze them myself.

When you’re Kendrick Lamar, and you’ve come from the city he did, and seen the things he’s seen, there’s always this innate feeling of restlessness, that even though you’re a multi-time Grammy Award winner, you still have to work at being great. There’s always a new message to be told, a new wrinkle in the way you disseminate thoughts.”

“Upon its release, it was somewhat tough to describe Butterfly’s impact; it simply had that thing, that certain gravitas you couldn’t describe. It had an it factor, and as it played, there was this feeling that you were hearing something familiar and fresh at the same time [...] There’s rarely an impetus for going beyond the scope of what’s expected. So for Kendrick to create such a record was incredibly brave, and it set the course for others to do the same.”

Basically a 5⭐️ book, but I’ll say 4 1/2⭐️ because I just want more of it. Long live King Kenny

A must-read for Kendrick fans, and a deeply readable, engaging and important text for all. The Compton rapper is, of course, the subject and protagonist, and Moore unspools his life and legacy in rich detail. But as the title suggests, there’s so much more than music at stake here. As the rapper ascends into the pantheon, the country begins to crumble. Moore’s stirring accounts of the police and political violence of the last decade made me think about and write down how I felt at these different moments, particularly in the days after Trump was elected president. So much chaos and tragedy has solidified into normalcy the last four years—Moore reminds us to step back and understand how we got here.

I imagine it's no easy task to write a biography about a living artist still producing work, especially one as private and reclusive as Kendrick Lamar, but Moore rises to the challenge with remarkable results. The Butterfly Effect is thoroughly researched and passionate, contextualizing Kendrick's rise in the history of Compton, police brutality in the 2010's, and the Obama and Trump presidencies. Although this contextualization at times deviates focus away from Kendrick's story and his work's impact, The Butterfly Effect is nevertheless an engrossing read, and does justice to Kendrick's impressive work ethic and fascinating genius.

Marcus J. Moore’s “The Butterfly Effect” is a tribute to the art, impact, and legacy of Hip-Hop artist Kendrick Lamar. Moore traces the life and career of one of the greatest rappers of all time, highlighting key moments, albums, and performances. Even more than that, however, Moore shows how Lamar’s work not only stayed within the confines of the art world but that it actually touched “the soul of Black America,” as the subtitle of the book suggests. Moore also draws out the sociopolitical and spiritual significance of Lamar’s work, especially toward the end of the book. All in all, this book is a must-read for anyone interested in Hip-Hop generally or Lamar and his work specifically!

I think Traci summed this up perfectly. If you’re a big fan of Lamar and a magazine editorial turned into a book about him is your jam then this is definitely for you. Unfortunately so little of this “biography” is spent on Lamars early life that it does kind of just come off as a celebration of Lamar and his music which is where the subtitle for the book comes in.

I won’t be rating this as I don’t at all think I was the intended audience for it and I do think when all is said and done this was done very well and the intended audience is likely to devour it.

A multifaceted survey of Kendrick's development and astonishing career. Marcus Moore brings enough depth to the story to maintain keen interest, although I would have liked more thematic analysis on TPAB and DAMN. And while the book's ending feels a little rushed, as a whole it is written so well and makes for a compelling ode to the musical giant that Kendrick is.

I was also quite moved by the hauntingly beautiful middle chapter, "The Fight for Black Life," which chronicles the development of Black Lives Matter. It might be the best chapter in the whole book.

Felt well timed with the Super Bowl and Grammys. I literally read the opening chapter about losing as the Grammys in '12 right before he won a couple for "Not Like Us."

Excellent job of weaving in social context with the timing and creativity of the art. Exactly what I was looking for from this.

Very enjoyable. Highly recommended. Would love a second edition with more into DAMN and the newer albums released since this was published.
