My thanks to Frances Lincoln Children’s Books for a review copy of this gorgeous book via Edelweiss.

Cat Family Christmas: A Lift the Flap Advent Book, as the name suggests is a picture book that takes readers along as the cat family comprising Mommy and Daddy Cat and kittens Lupin, Bud, Sorrel, and Pip prepare for Christmas over the twelve days to Christmas Eve. Beginning with the day they get off work and school, respectively, we watch as they get ready for Christmas from making pomander oranges and decorating the tree, to baking cake and gingerbread with Mommy and Daddy, fetching Grandma and Grandpa Cat from the railway station, to going carolling (with kitty carols), wrapping presents, and taking special treats to the horses and donkeys in the stables. Each day brings its own exciting activities.

The book comprises twelve beautifully illustrated (double) pages, each covering the activities of one day. Each has a brief paragraph of text, but the real magic comes from the detailed colour illustrations—from the crockery in the kitchen and upholstery with their various patterns (Christmassy ones among them), fish shaped and bone shaped luggage at the railway station, shoppers at the general store, and much more. (The town is not merely a cat one but has various animals living in it whom we see in the different scenes.) Each of these pages has numerous flaps, on bags, cupboards, lamps, sledges and other things which the reader can lift for more detail. For instance, inside lamps or cushions one might find mice making their own Christmas preparations or writing letters to santa or simply taking a nap; in baskets we might find ornaments, and in jars cookies and other treats. Each page has several (In the ebook form I received, every page was reproduced on the next with each of the flaps open and highlighting what one would see if the flap were opened—the background or main illustration being dulled and the focus being on what was in each flap as though a light were focused on it.)

Of course, I absolutely LOVED this book (not only for the cats), especially for the lovely illustrations and detail under the different flaps. A book that children I’m sure would love as a Christmas present, and adults (like me) too, since I love these illustrated volumes!

The book is written by Lucy Brownridge, a London-based author and editor of children’s books on various themes including art, history, animals, and science and Illustrated by Eunyoung Seo, illustrator and graphic-designer based in South Korea.

Woweee, this is an amazing children's Christmas book, which has stunningly beautiful graphics, and a lot of delightful text that will keep your child happy for hours, as they explore 140 'lift the flap' doors to find lots of little surprises.

My daughter and I absolutely loved this book so much, and it was really fun. My daughter loves cats, so she was thrilled with this book, and she was amazed by it. There are 24 pages in the book, so you can use the book like an advent calendar. Each page shows how a cat family prepares for Christmas, such as how they clean the house, bake and cook the food, wrap the presents etc. It is so magical, and every child should read this book! It would make the perfect gift for Christmas time or at any time over the Winter season. It really is fantastic, and I recommend it highly!

Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book.

Get this one before the 12 days of Christmas start!

This lift-the-flap advent book features beautifully illustrated pages of a cat family during Christmas as they prepare and celebrate the holiday season. The placement of the various flaps was done cleverly and will be so much fun for readers to explore as they progress through the story.

Not only are the activities engaging, but the story itself is as well, as it counts down the 12 days of Christmas. As you flip through the book, note the different animal families, which include rabbits, badgers, and foxes (among others!). It is lovely to see the various families as they board the sleeper train! Even the houses display snowmen outside (e.g., snow-cats and snow-ducks!)

This book is so much fun to read with your little ones as you approach Christmas day. The last page ends on Christmas Eve.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this advanced review copy. All opinions are my own.

Odbrojavanje do Božića, bogate ilustracije, na svakoj stranici se može puno toga naći i o puno toga porazgovarati s djecom. Slatko. Nije neka super uzbudljiva priča, ali je za predbožićni ugođaj.

Aw, what a sweet book and fun way of enjoying the run up to Christmas for children! This is about the Cat family and follows their preparations during the twelve days leading up to Christmas. The book is a lift-the-flaps book with lots of different flaps to lift on every page although due to the nature of this being a digital copy I am reviewing, I haven’t been able to see what the book feels like or the images behind the flaps, unfortunately.

Each double page follows one day before Christmas, counting down from twelve all the way until Christmas Eve. With every day, the Cat family are busy doing lots of things, preparing the house, writing their letters, helping the sing carols, meeting family at the train station, etc. Each double page shows a different scene and is accompanied with a paragraph explaining what it is the Cat family are doing on that day. I do have to say I absolutely adore the illustrations on each page. There is so much detail to look at even without seeing what’s under the flaps and I would love to spend more time with the Cat family in other books. It feels a little like Brambly Hedge with that slightly old fashioned feel to the illustrations and all of the cats in the family and other animals dressed up like humans, it just looks so adorable and lovely and you can really enjoy this book for the images alone!

On every double page there are lots of flaps to lift too, you can see where they are marked and there are lots to find hidden among windows, doors and other objects in the pictures. I wish I knew what is shown under the flaps but unfortunately I don’t, however this story continues to be a joy to read even without opening the flaps, as you see the Cat family making all their preparations before the big day!

As I said the illustrations are so details and lovely, and I love how so many things are happening on each page. Some of my favourite images are the Cat family singing carols, especially those words they sing: “We fish you a meowy Christmas and a tabby new year!” and the lovely images of them at the shops and the stables. Every double page is so special to look at and one of them even flips the book sideways to add even more magic when you see a certain image of a tree. I just adore this book so much and would love to own the physical copy if I could!
Cat Family Christmas book page image three

Overall this is such a lovely book and a great one to enjoy in the run up to Christmas. The images are beautiful, heart-warming and so engaging and the story of the Cat family preparing for Christmas is such a lovely one too! With so many flaps to lift on each page too I’m sure it’s a really lovely and fun book to look at again and again!

So much searching and fun, while letting the atmosphere of the approaching holidays beam from every page.

There's only a few days left until Christmas, which means there are more than a couple things to get done. Readers join the Cat family as they prepare presents, do chores, pack, and so much more during their preparation for the upcoming celebration.

This book has a lovely, traditional flair, making it perfect for a read aloud leading up to the holidays. The text flows smoothly, giving just enough description to ring in the season, while letting the lively illustrations take over the rest. Each scene holds many details and characters as they busy themselves with activities to make the coming days a joy. This gives plenty of places for the small flaps to hide. Listeners will have to search and find each door, and discover the fun surprises inside. These are hidden enough to make it fun for even slightly older listeners.

The text is age appropriate for listeners, and those, who are pretty sure of their words, can try it on their own. There's a slight bit of cat humor built in, which adds a nice flair. The scenes also vary quite a bit, including everything from a train station, a store, a farm, and more. So there's a nice dose of variety in the places and objects young listeners will see...and have to search through.

I do see this as being a favorite during the Advent season, which will be picked up again and again.
I received a DRC and am adding this one to my own Christmas present list.

The eponymous Cat Family prepares for Christmas in this adorable interactive book for Advent from British author Lucy Brownridge and South Korean illustrator Eunyoung Seo. On each of the twelve days before Christmas, the family engage in various activities—decorating, baking treats, writing Christmas cards and letters to Santa, picking up Granny and Grandpa Cat at the train station, going Christmas caroling in the village—while the twelve two-page board book spreads feature over 140 flaps that can be pulled back. The book concludes on Christmas Eve, as the Cat family (and another family revealed under the flaps) look forward to the big day itself, on the morrow...

The first of two interactive titles to feature this feline family—the subsequent title, Cat Family at The Museum: A Lift-the-Flap Book, was published last year (2023)—Cat Family Christmas: A Lift-the-Flap Advent Book pairs an engaging story about a loving family at the holidays with cute-as-a-button artwork. The many flaps will keep young children engrossed, and provide hours of extra fun, revealing either the contents of various objects (baskets, boxes, etc) or the activities of the mouse family which apparently lives side by side with the eponymous cat family, inside their walls and just out of sight. I really appreciated the fact that the flaps don't just reveal hidden objects here, but actually tell a parallel story to the main one being spun in the text. Recommended to younger children at Christmas, who enjoy this kind of lift-the-flap fun!

A perfectly sensible gift for anyone wishing to give an advent item that doesn't just involve cheaply-made and bad value chocolates. This is the run-up to Christmas for the Cat family, and whether they're doing the last bit of vegetable gardening, wassailing round the village or decorating the home they're all active and busy, and charming, good-natured company. The pages are also stuffed with flaps to carefully lift up, so at any opportunity we see some cheeky sleepy mice sharing the house with the Cats, or we see more details through the train carriage curtains, or what's in everyone's lunchbox when they're through with school. It's all done masterfully well – the bird tree decoration lifts up to show its nest, in just one example of how much thought has gone into this. With timeless craft in the design and in the sole paragraph of text per spread that is telling us who is doing what, this should become one of those family heirloom books, a trusted volume to pass on and on. I would hope that's the case, at least – just as I would hope the olde school charms of this are as appreciated as they should be. Considering how delicate the flaps here might become, you may have to be on Santa's nice list before you can use this – but what an incentive!

Thank you to the publisher for giving me a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

First of all I would like to say that, oh do I wish I had this copy physically because it was simply so precious!! I could see the flap outlines and I just wanted to open them and enjoy the little surprises behind each door.
This little book was so precious. It follows a little countdown to Christmas with Christmas eve being the last one. It had such beautiful illustrations in them while also having a small bit of text from time to time. I loves the use of colour and the whole art style in general I thought it was so cute and different from the usual style that the general kidbook people use so to say.

I am obsessed with the kitchen page when they are preparing the food so to say. It was so adorable and I just wanna climb inside the pages and be with them to join all the shananigans.

Loves this so much, on top of all the fun it was also a quick read which I needed to get out of my small reading slump. So it was literally perfect for me.

Thanks so much for this experience, can't wait for Christmas!

My Review: As we already discussed this season, I love books with cats, especially when you add in Christmas. This was a really cute book that takes us through the Cat Family holiday preparations and classic traditions. There are TONs of open the flaps for lots of fun for those littles. The illustrations and the events throughout the book definitely capture that Victorian era feel for a heirloom feeling book but with the bonus of being able to be handled by everyone, not carefully like books from the actual Victorian era.

My Rating: This was a really different and unique book that I enjoyed. There is so much going on in those detailed illustrations and the lift the flaps, there will be hours spent just enjoying them all and finding little secrets throughout. I give it a rating of Three Paws and a Stump Wag.

Cat Family Christmas by Lucy Brownridge helps children (and their parents) countdown to Christmas. The decadent illustrations will delight everyone who owns this book. It is a lift-the-flap advent book - with over 140 flaps but as I read a digital ARC I am not able to comment on the full experience of the book.

The story itself follows the Christmas preparations of a family of cats and their kittens. What I really liked is that the Mom cat is represented as the earning parent. The town also consists of other animal families but not much is described about their lives. I do wish the character names were easier to correlate with the illustrations and recall.

Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for the digital ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. #NetGalley #CatFamilyChristmas

Cat Family Christmas
5 Fantastic Stars

What a delightful read!

I love the charming, cottage core style that reminisces of some of my favorite childhood books. I really enjoyed the traditional story and lovely illustrations that make this book work so well. I appreciate how the parents and kids, whether they are big or small, the whole family is involved. I found Cat Family Christmas does a great job getting the kids thinking of one's own Christmas traditions or providing inspiration to start their own traditions.

What a fun way to countdown the days of Christmas! I'd highly recommend and look forward to getting my copy. Thanks, NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group, for providing me with a digital ARC for an honest review.

Cat Family Christmas – Lift Flap Advent Book could be a new holiday reading tradition for YOUR family.

This super sweet children’s book featured a Cat Family and their family traditions. The illustrations were very creative and full of quaint details sure to keep readers of every age captivated. The flip up flaps added even more fun and surprise to this reading adventure.

We recommend buying at least two of this book- one for your family and one to gift to another family to enjoy this holiday season.

Thank you to Netgalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Frances Lincoln Children's Books for the digital ARC!

This is such a cute book. The illustrations were wonderful and I liked the car touches they added in throughout the story (ex. having the cats get sugared mice for Christmas).

I sadly couldn't look through the flaps since this was a digital book but I'm sure they will be tons of fun for kids to look through. Overall this is a fun book for kids and cat lovers to have around Christmas time.

Thank you Netgalley, for allowing me to review this book. The opinions aare strictly my own.

I mushy say , I enjoyed reading the words and taking the time to take him each image. Even without the flaps this book was mesmerizing. I must say, I don't know why but the otters in clothes made me very happy. The other animals were cute, but those cuties made my heart smiles.

I also very much enjoyed the Daily count down. It would be nice to make an activity to go along with each day and read on pagebper day.

Cats and Christmas?! What more could you possibly want? I read this book with my two-year-old daughter and she really got a kick out of the "meow meows" baking and decorating the Christmas tree. My only gripe is that I wish that we had been able to receive a hard copy of the book, because it was hard to visualize the "lift-the-flap" images digitally. I will say that I found the illustrations to be beautiful and the coloring was very classic.

Extremely cute art work with a old fashioned feel. Story is nice with lots of nice cat Christmas puns… love a cat pun. I like the idea of a non traditional advents but there is no way any kids I know would last the count down with all the cute cats and the lift the flaps. I would have bought this as gift for a few little crazy cat folk I know but the use of mommy instead mummy puts me off. That being said would make a lovely Christmas Eve bedtime story for kids around 4-9 ages and lovely gift.

This is a sweet look at one family's Christmas traditions: decorating, making presents, entertaining visitors, and caroling; maybe your child will recognize some of these activities, OR discover a new tradition in the making.

The illustrations have a charming, old-fashioned feel, and the many flaps to open should keep the little ones busy during those antsy days leading to the big event.

I adored this lovely little Christmas book! The illustrations are cozy, nostalgic and very sweet. But, even without that, I loved Cat Christmas and I'm looking forward getting a hard copy to keep.
