Yoi Takiguchi is a girl who's called a "prince" because of her beautiful appearance and the stylish way she carries herself. She meets Ichimura-sempai, who is also called a prince at her school and somehow they start a trial relationship. At first, Yoi was prepared to find out what her sempai was really like, but as she gradually noticed a change in her own feelings, she has become more confused day by day. On the other hand, Ichimura-sempai is realizing that Yoi is starting to hold a much larger place in his heart than before. And with all this going on, Yoi meets a new prince at her job...?!
Now that's more like it! This one was so good and angsty. Not wild about the love triangle that I see barreling down from a mile away, but then again I never am.
Just like earlier with vol 1 and vol 2, there was a steady stream of cuteness and a budding romance that built nicely on the foundations laid down previously.
However, it wasn't all smooth sailing and first Yoi had to overcome the obstacle that was her inner thoughts, stubbornness and romantic awkwardness before facing the obstacle that was a possible second male lead. The vol ended on a sour note so it should be interesting to see where it heads next in vol 4 ...
Yoi and Ichimura are contractually dating and have very nearly kissed. While Yoi continues to lose her princely trappings, we get such novel experiences as the pending summer festival and another attractive boy coming into Yoi’s orbit.
Last volume I lamented that there was a piece missing from this series and I think it showed up this volume, but it’s from an entirely different puzzle. It all stems from the core relationship here being pretty dull.
Yoi is a genuinely fun character, but she seems to have a problem with what makes her unique and wants to be like, well, every other girl who ever starred in a shojo manga. That’s certainly one way to go, but it’s not the most interesting one, that’s for sure.
Even with a little fleshing out of his backstory, Ichimura remains kind of a pierced lump. His confusion over his burgeoning actual feelings is nice and all, but he’s essentially every other shojo pretty boy and even with his cute interactions with his friends, it’s very slight.
The problem here is that Yoi gets a cute coworker at her Dad’s restaurant. Not only do we get the well-worn rival trope, but it violates the very first rule of shojo manga (or at least the very first rule for purposes of my claims in this review) - do not make your rival more likeable than the male lead.
While they don’t spend a ton of time together, Yoi and the new guy seem to get along really well. He appreciates her as she already is (not that Ichimura is actively trying to change her or anything, but the point remains) and they have a shared moment over some lassi (turns out this has nothing to do with Samesh falling down the well) that’s got more chemistry than anything our leads get up to.
Everything about Yoi and Ichimura is super awkward and not in an especially cute way. I get that writing a strong rival is hard (largely why this trope always annoys me), but in this case he’s outshining Ichimura by a mile and seems very genuine and non-predatory like many rivals end up.
Which means this is one of those situations where I’m rewriting the story in my head and I think I like my version better. Honestly, Yoi’s princely tendencies should be celebrated and appreciated, not blunted by having a guy in her life, and said guy in her life isn’t really notable for anything.
Bringing somebody into the mix who puts this under such a spotlight even though their role is only going to be ‘get shot down so Yoi can realize how much she cares about Ichimura’ is a bad swerve for the narrative and regrettably predictable after the mangaka’s last series was such a stellar deviation from the norm.
3 stars - I’m not against this book, but it doesn’t exactly stoke my fires or especially smoulder with passion. It’s not Shortcake Cake since I don’t actively hate Ichimura, but neither he nor the story is bringing enough to the table for me to call this a standout or anything.
Told you. That kiss was a scam! I'm a veteran reader here. But man, I'm so lucky today that I found this gem! That's all I have to say! GAH I LOVE IT SO MUCH!
Edit: I CAN'T WAIT FOR VOLUME 4 I'M DYING OUT HERE!
While this still relies on shoujo manga tropes that have been explored many many times, I still think this manga has got a lot of personality. Firstly, I really like the main character. Even if she's still as usual a very inexperimented and clueless girl when it comes to love, she still holds her ground and has deep values that she doesn't change for the love interest. The latter is also intriguing. He's the cliché character "popular boy of the school" but I find his character and behaviour quite interesting. With the apparition of the eternal rival, I think the story is going to get better and better. I hope the author is not going to fall too much into clichés and that the story is not going to become unoriginal and boring.
I'm really happy to have the chance to read it in japanese, I feel like it changes a lot how I perceive the characters. Some dialogue in French would make me ick but in japanese I think it's fine? Magic of languages. The art is also really beautiful.
Okay!
4 stars!! The art! The characters! The story! Everything was so perfect BUT I just hate when Sensei added another “prince” to the story! I hate love 📐 Don’t get me wrong Ohji is just so beautiful And seeing a jealous Ichimura was just cute! Can’t wait to see where the story is going! But I want Yoi and Ichi as my end game!!
˖᯽ ݁˖· ─ reread 9/15 It definitely didn't hit like the first time but it was still entertaining I low-key hate the random 2nd lead but it's eating.. For now
Jealous Ichimura is EVERYTHING!!!!! Also second main lead is so cute 😭😭😭 i hope he'll have a love interest too coz i don't wanna see him heartbroken :((((
The 2nd male lead, Takuto, has been introduced and dangggg is he hot. I love the fact that he's from a different school and ended up working part time at Yoi's father's shop.
I love how different Takuto is when compared to Kahoku. and yet both of them have already fallen for Yoi. It's about time Yoi gets swept off her feet.
Sure there seems to be a misunderstanding brewing but I like how Yoi & Kohaku will somehow end up confessing what's exactly on their mind/what they're feeling in the heat of the moment which then allows them to process their feelings for each other even more.
Looking forward to the summer festival date in the next volume!
It took some time for me to get back into this series (mainly because the relationship between the mains is in this weird in-between stage right now and that's most of the time the part I enjoy the least in love stories) but at the end it had its hooks back in me. It's just so sweet and I really like our main girl and guy in here. I'll read on with the german translations, though, because they are less expensive for me. LOVE THE COVER btw.
Love, love, love the artwork in this one. The story was a little bit better in the previous books, but I’m still enjoying it, overall. And of course there has to be the introduction of the obligatory love triangle, sigh. The good news is, the third “prince” is just so very beautiful. Maybe this new character will get the two main characters to actually act on their feelings? Maybe? Anyway, going to keep reading this because it’s still adorable, and again the artwork makes it so worthwhile.
Ehehehe picks up from last volume and a NEW GUY IS INTRODUCED. I'm giddy.
RECAP: they don't kiss, she and he pull back and are awkward with each other, plan another date, Yoi meets new part-timer Ohji who is also really attractive. Ends with Ichimaru and friends coming to the curry place and he admits he's jealous to her.
Oh look here comes the pointless love triangle -_- This is definitely Yamamori's weakest series (out of the ones I've read). The characters are just dull compared to her other series and the plot is super generic. The art however is very good.
Aaayyy! Me gustó bastante!!!
I am still enjoying this series, but the first volume was still the shining crown for me. I am not happy that there is a love triangle being introduced here, but it's a shojo manga so I don't know why I was expecting it to not have one.
I’m still on the fence- pretty privilege gets on my nerves, but it’s nice to know the guy has the ugly green monster and the guts to say it out loud. I can respect that. Also, I love a jealous moment 😛 Sue me 😜😛😛
