The third volume in the Seminars in Psychological Astrology series. The authors discuss the mythology and psychology of the Moon, and show its relevance as a significator of relationships. Inaddition, the correspondence between the Sun and the development of consciousness is explored in depth. Includes a chapter on the lunation cycle.
Liz Greene is held in high esteem by astrologers all over the world, professional and non-professional alike. She is a prolific author of books and various publications and has been instrumental in shaping modern psychological astrology.
She holds doctorate degrees in psychology and (as of 2010) in history and is a qualified Jungian analyst. She also holds a diploma in counselling from the Centre for Transpersonal Psychology in London, and a diploma from the Faculty of Astrological Studies, of which she is a lifetime Patron.
A high-quality exploration of the meanings of Sun, Moon, and their relationship from the astrological point of view. The authors are counselors and therapists as well as astrologers, and the material is steeped in the deep insights of these fields. This reader was especially wowed by the examination of the Sun and its horoscope placement in terms of the mythical journey of the hero, as described by Joseph Campbell in his superb The Hero With a Thousand Faces. In brief, Greene and Sasportas see the Sun as showing how we find a sense of meaning and purpose in life, and the Moon as showing how we relate to our everyday physical existence and in particular our relationships.
The book is aimed at the practicing astrologer. If you are one, or if you have a serious interest in astrology for any reason, you will find a wealth of inspiring and thought-provoking ideas here.
I've been obsessed with astrology recently, and this book was a marvel - it marries myth, psychology, and astrology. It's still too complex for me to understand (since most of my knowledge was cobbled together from Google searches), but Greene and Sasportas offer a very nuanced discussion of the sun and moon both in a person's natal chart and throughout a person's life. My only difficulty with this book was the organization - there were a number of ideas that kept repeating and some that weren't explained enough. But then, it could be because this was intended for an audience with a more sophisticated background in astrology, and it was originally a lecture series, meaning even the interaction with the audience was part of the book. Definitely will come back to this, though, after I have a more solid foundation in astrology.
solid! same caveats with all the cpa books - the transcribed aspect gets a bit tedious, and the case studies, while thorough, can be a bit hard to follow when just read.
really solid breakdown of the Sun & Moon through the psychological lens: Moon as the innate ways we connect with others and relate to the world, the ways we seek comfort in our habits and surroundings, the way we relate to our mothers, etc; Sun as a thing we grow into, a sense of purpose and direction for growth that we consciously work towards as we become adults.
One of the best astrology books out there today! I own over 200 books on astrology and have been studying for a number of years. Yet I learned many new insights about the core of astrology, the Sun and Moon from this book. Liz Greene is hands down the most insightful astrologer out there today. Most of her books are great with some being outstanding. This is one of them. Can't recommend it highly enough!
It explains the relevance of the Sun and Moon from both a mythological, as well as, a psychological perspective.
From the point of view of psychological astrology, I don't think it could have made the importance of the formative years and the relationship of the child with its parents any clearer. I think it's an eye opener for astrologers who underestimate the foundational significance of the sun and the moon.
If you are not a practicing astrologer, read it for self-awareness. I learnt a lot about my own complexes and what I'm doing wrong/right in my life.
This book goes deep into the Sun and Moon in astrology. A must read for anyone who wants to go beyond superficial sun sign astrology. She describes qualities of the Sun and Moon in each sign and aspects to the Sun and Moon.
I like how she ties together the ascendant, Sun, and Moon: "Life keeps hitting us over the head with Ascendant issues, and through developing the values of the rising sign, inwardly as well as in our behaviour, we gradually strengthen the Sun and Moon, and discover that they can operate together with the Ascendant as the unifying link."
One of my favorite books for understanding the psychological elements of astrology - especially pertaining to the sun & moon signs. It took me forever to read because I was constantly notating and highlighting!! I am coming to really love a lot of Liz Greene’s works and I’ll be reading the rest of the books from this seminar as well. I wouldn’t say this is a beginners book as it talks a lot about transits, aspects, etc as if you’re already well-informed; but it definitely is a great tool for understanding the masculine & feminine energies behind the sun & the moon as well as dissecting the paternal and maternal psychological relationship coinciding with the sun and moon placement in the birth chart.
Liz Greene's and Howard Sasportas books are a unique combination of lecture on the topic and a q & a session. It brings in topics, insights and questions that might not otherwise be addressed on the various topics. The luminaries is a foundational work for understanding the Sun and Moon in astrology. Highly recommend.
An interesting study of the psychological and mythological significations of the moon and sun. This book has an enthusiastic start, but I wish there had been more detail throughout. It felt like many points were started but not entirely finished. Still very much worth reading, very interesting notes.
Ok, this style from Liz Greene does not resonate with me at all. A repeat of my review for The Inner Planets: "A transcribed lecture/seminar. Needs some heavy-handed editing/organising. Awkward to read. Almost as though the goal is obfuscation rather than education..." Oh well. Not my cup of tea.
The content of this book is great, with many interesting insights such as the mythological stories that are attached to the sun and moon (and our psyche). The only thing I did not like was the way of writing: it can best be described as a transcript of several classes.
Лиз Грийн и Хауърд Саспортас са се допълвали перфектно по време на своите семинари и това си личи на тези страници. Показват един задълбочен подход и изследване на светилата в картата на човек. Това е книга, която всеки един астролог трябва да прочете!
Another insightful group of seminars by Liz Greene and the late great Howard Saportas. The psychology aspect of the Sun and Moon in the birth chart goes deep into the subject, discussing the Souls journey and the relationships between your parents may they be good, bad or indifferent, whilst also reminding you that they are also human too, with their own issue they are or were working through.
If you are interested seriously in astrology then this is an essential addition.
If you are interested in astrology and have not yet explored Liz Greene's works, this is a good one to begin with. The Sun and Moon are the core of our being, psychologically speaking, and getting a grasp of their natures is a great place to begin.
Truly though, all of her work is stellar, and will help you begin to step into a more sophisticated and nuanced reading of charts.
Great book well written, but not for the faint hearted ..... this one can open wounds and lead into all sorts of unknown areas. For those who wish to deal, much insight.
