I really loved this book! It was like hanging out with a friend who comes over with pizza (and a binder of notes) when you need advice. The author repeatedly stated that she's a peer, not a guru, which I appreciate, because it makes everything more real and approachable. Sure, she's many levels above me in her writing success and experience, but she's also, like, a real person. Who knew ;)
I'm saying this, because sometimes how-to books are written from a pedestal and that makes them harder to relate to for me. With this book, it's as if I was honestly just sitting with Zoe somewhere and she would tell me what worked for her, what didn't, and what she suggested I did. It made me miss hanging out with writing aquaintances (I haven't done that in a long, long time, and I probably should find a new virtual writerly space).
There's not a lot of generalizations in this book and if there are, they are followed with more details later on. They are also based on real examples, which is the best way for me to absorb something.
This is not a book where you'll find a numerous ways to set SMART goals or whatever. But if you're a writer, you will be able to look on what you have and what you want to have and then come up with ideas on how to attempt to breach the gap. For me (someone who recently sat down and created a plan), it also allowed me to dig a little deeper and was an additional check if the plan makes sense.
This book may be read as a stand-alone, but you're probably going to be tempted to go back and read the other two books as well. ;)
I read an ARC of this book, but my opinion is my own.
