It Must Be Love

Rate this book
Undercover cop Joe Shanahan's bad luck hit bottom the morning he stared up into the face of sexy suspect Gabrielle Breedlove. She'd blown his cover---brought him down with a can of hairspray---and now his new assignment was to pose as her boyfriend. But spending as much time as possible with the utterly irresistible New Age beauty caused unexpected complications. To make matters worse, his matchmaking sisters are picking out china patterns.

Joe's brooding good looks and T-shirt-straining muscles might be easy on the eyes, but how could Gabrielle be attracted to a straight-laced detective who's determined to find evidence to arrest her? Still, he invades her dreams and when they share a transcendent lovemaking experience, Gabrielle knows it must be love.

This is a very sweet book. Rom com with a selfish hero, Joe who is so selfish and childish and yet brooding. Joe is a cop. He was monitoring Gabrielle because he suspected she stole a painting.

Gabrielle is a free spirited, new love, meditation, Yanni that kind of heroine. They both can not be more opposite than each other. And yet their banter, push and pull are so sweet and fun to listen.

I do love the chemistry. Miss Gibson gives her characters development justice by exploring their connection. The story is not boring or dragging at all.

Overall this is a wonderful book.

I don't modify ratings, but if I did, this one wouldn't be 5 Stars, more like 3.5 Stars. Amazing what time does to your enjoyment of some books.

I've been in a book funk for most of 2014. 2015 may be the year of the re-read or only those "sure things" that you are about 90% certain you will like. I'm really tired of taking chances, wasting time on books that just don't pan out.

I did enjoy this book. It was fun and I enjoyed the characters. No huge plot and very little primary or secondary character development, but I didn't need a deep read. Just good. This was good.

Happy Reading!

Loved this book. The characters were quirky and fun. I've said so much about this author in other reviews I've written, I've run out of stellar things to say. I'll read her books over again. They are really good stories told very simply. Rachel Gibson at her best.

Rachel Gibson is a go to author for me when I need a fun, upbeat story, she always delivers. It Must be Love was about opposites attract and fit the bill.

Joe is a cop, not really satisfied with his job and also thinking maybe its time to settle down, have a family, and pacify his busy body sisters and mom. He is traditional, somewhat chauvinistic, he wants a wife that feeds him, cleans his socks and takes care of him. Gabrielle was not for him.

Gabrielle owns an antique store and is of the "new age" thinking. She is into oils, kismet, auras, and Yanni. Gabrielle's business partner is under investigation for laundering priceless antiques and art work, so the cops force Gab into being Joe's informant. He poses as her handyman for her shop and her boyfriend. Of course this puts them into many compromising positions which builds hot, hot, hot sexual tension. I liked that Gab was more openminded than Joe and realized way before him that he was for her. It did set her up for major heartbreak, but building to that climax was exciting.

The show stealer for me was Joe's human like parrot, Sam. Sam watched Jerry Springer all day, so he had some great lines. He also quoted Clint Eastwood and could imitate a ringing phone perfectly...gave me lots of chuckles.

Even though this was light and funny it was well written and developed, pack some emotional scenes including a love triangle (fav of mine) and gave new twists and freshness to the opposites attract story line.

I'm not going to rate this because it may just be me. At any rate, I've spent the first couple of chapters yelling at Gabrielle to get a freaking lawyer that doesn't suck and while she's at it, initiate an internal affairs investigation for abuse. Since her making a deal with the cops (for a completely bogus charge) is pretty much the foundation of everything (forcing her to work with the jerkiest jerk who ever jerked) in a setup that makes little sense at all I think it's probably best if I just return the book and bow out of the stupid.

Urgh, it just got too awful.

This is a story about a tough cop who poses as the boyfriend of a free-spirited shop keeper, who reads auras and smells aromas, in order to spy on her business partner.

After a week of cold dialogue and abrupt and public kisses, the heroine decides she can trust him with unprotected sex, even though two hours beforehand he'd told her he brings home other women. But she's on the pill, so you know: phew!

My brain just couldn't let me finish this one. I kept thinking WTF? and not understanding their motivations other than his hair curled around his manly neck and she had plump breasts and a silver bikini didn't help.

The dialogue was so poor that even his big emotional reveal halfway through the book took about ten seconds and Voilà!! Deep and Sensitive Man!!!

Everytime I thought he might learn some humility and redeem himself he just became worse.

Perhaps this book gets better towards the end, but I'll never know.

I have never been so tempted to give a one star rating on a book I actually finished before. Joe is the biggest douche canoe that has ever graced the pages of fiction. He's a womanizer with little to no respect for women. He's a sexist chauvinist pig. He's the type of guy that thinks his physical appearance makes him God's freaking gift to women and he can treat them however they choose and has the right to feel offended if they aren't jumping to spread their legs, clean his house and cook his dinner. He's literally fucking slime of a man and I have never loathed a hero as much as I loathe him. Honestly she'd have better taste in men if she dated Hannibal Lectner. I listened to this on audio in my bedroom and even my husband thought the character deserved to have his ass kicked. Like my spouse is sitting here asking how dumb this chick could be to take this asshole back. This is the type of man who's so much of a jerk he disturbs other men in the way he behaves toward women. He literally brings her food from the other woman he's dating's deli the day he hooks up with Gabi. I mean he regularly brings her food from his other potential girlfriend, more than once. He outright tells her it's a woman's job to cook and clean for him. And yeah it's an older book, but I was a teenager in the 90s and even then this behavior would be seen and downright disgusting.

The whole basis of the plot is her being threatened on trumped up charges that would NEVER fly in a court room and are blatant police harrassment and abuse of power. The book paints the police department worse than it paints the criminals and if I believed it was anywhere close to true I say the need for police reform was far worse than I already believed it is.

Gabrielle is naive and flighty and hard to respect. I pity her as a character because of her personality but I can't say I liked her that much either. I didn't hate her, she's just not the type of person I'd want to spend a lot of time with. And I'm so beyond tired of the I'm so gangly and tall trope. Exactly why do writers ignore that women who grace runways and magazines and hang off the arms of movie stars and moguls are all tall women? That even when a guy isn't that tall himself a tall woman with her long graceful legs can turn his head? Like I get that tall is a regular trope simply because so many people equate tall with sexy but the "whoa is me I could be a runway model and men turn and stare at me but I'm so ugly for not being short and slapped with juvenile nicknames like half pint" whining is a huge irritant for me. The character is basically described as a man's walking wet dream and spends pages whining about her appearance.

Overall I feel like I wasted an audible credit and I super disappointed that Gibson, who normally writes titles I enjoy, actually wrote this.

it must be love more like it must be boring. there's nothing much going on between characters except they're "forced" into a relationship. he's kind of a pig cause he thinks women should be maids and take care of their husbands which explains when it was published. aside from that, boring. boringgggg. snore.

Okay. It's been a while since I read this book, but one thing I do remember was how shallow and girly the heroine was. And of course the hero was a big macho alpha male. I personally do not like my heroines to act like hollow-brained ninnies like this girl did. I also remember a lot of "I love him, I hate him, I love him again" etc. The hero was pretty tacky because he dated a woman up until the very end while he was sleeping with the heroine. I don't like dudes who are shady like that and I don't appreciate my faith being built in the honorable hero only to find out he's playing the field to make the plot more shocking.

Walo temanya pasaran bgt -pura2 pacaran- tp gw sukaaaaaa...

Detektif Joseph 'Joe' Shanahan lgsung menilai kalo Gabrielle Breedlove adl cwe yg eksentrik..
Pertama, dia meng-K.O Joe waktu Joe sdg membuntuti dia di taman -dgn hairspray-
Kedua, Gabrielle terobsesi dgn karma dan yingyang -yg menurut Joe aneh sgt-
Ketiga, nama nya yg seperti nama porn star.

Gabrielle terpaksa bersedia bekerja sama dgn kepolisian apabila tdk mau menjalani hukuman penjara -membawa senjata tanpa izin ketika dia meng K.O seorang penguntit keren yg trnyata seorg polisi-
Joe tipe pria sok berkuasa sekaligus unik -Joe miara burung kakaktua yg demen nntn pilem2 John Wayne-
a. Joe wasn't her real boyfriend
b. She didn't care about him (?)
c. She wasn't attracted to unelightened men

Gw suka bgt pas di adegan di rumahnya Kevin.
Huwaaa, seru sgt.
Kamar penuh dgn kaca, 2 org yg lg di penuhi daya tarik kimiawi -halah bahasa gw-
Trus lanjut massage2an di rmhnya Gabbrielle.
Steamy bo.
.. XD

N kocak bgt yg di bagian lukisan2 nya Gabrielle...

Joe jg smpat bikin gw sebel.
Pngen gw cekek2.
Hiks.

Tp jd demen lg pas dia liat Gabrielle ama cwo laen n dia cemburu akut.
Kutip pikiran dia:
it was as hell of a thing to look at the woman you loved in the arms of another man
auwwwwwwww
mantaph endingnya...

Joe is a thirty-something, down to earth cop who owns a hilarious parrot and thinks that it's time to look at settling down with a sexy woman who doesn't mind running the household and have some kids. He is currently working on a big art theft case and is shadowing one of the two suspects: Gabrielle Breedlove.

Gabrielle is a new-age chick who owns a curio store together with her business partner Kevin and makes aromatherapy oils to sell at markets. She is looking for an enlightened man, with a positive aura who would love to meditate with her.

One morning, while jogging in the park, she takes down a guy who she thinks is stalking her for the past week and is quite surprised when the alleged stalker ends up arresting her. After a long interrogation she agrees to pose as Joe's girlfriend to get him access to her shop and her business partner. From then on the two of them have some hilarious encounters with Gabrielles mother who saw Joe in one her visions as her daughters new passionate lover and with Joes sisters who would love to prepare the wedding. The heat between the pretend couple builds up but they try to fight the attraction because they are just not what they expected the love of their lives to be. Or are they?

This was a very sweet read that made me smile quite a few times throughout the book. I pretty much read it in one day and I'm sure to pick up more of Gibsons stories.I really loved the characters, especially Gabrielle and Sam, the parrot.

This is a re-read, or rather a re-skim. Not one of Ms. Gibson’s better efforts. A predictable, light, opposites attract story. Many reviewers disliked the heroine for being too flakey and bimboesque. I was okay with Gabby but hated the hero. He was a one note jerk and a bad cop who should be dragged up before internal affairs and fired. But, hey, what’s sexy about cops who don’t abuse the authority we’ve given them.

Needing to read a book that would bring all the feels and then some, I decided to take something out of the backlist of Rachel Gibson’s published works, and found myself reading It Must be Love, bringing together two protagonists who are the very opposite of each other in every single sense.

35 year old Joseph Andrew Shanahan (Joe) is a law enforcement officer who has been shadowing the moves of 28 year old Gabrielle Breedlove for the past couple of days. Fifteen years as a police officer, and Gabrielle is the first person to get the jump on him, which hurts his pride. Gabrielle and her business partner Kevin comes under investigation upon suspicion of using their curio shop to deal in stolen antiques, and Joe remains unconvinced that Gabrielle might be as innocent as she claims to be.

Forced to play boyfriend-girlfriend for Joe to get the evidence he requires means that the situation creates for the kind of moments that makes it hard to turn away from the blistering heat and desire that flares to life between them. Neither Gabrielle nor Joe believes that they are right for each other, but then there is no denying the other half of your soul, is there?

I had such fun reading this novel, and picking this was the right choice at the time. I love the uniqueness that is Ms. Gibson in her books – she brings together the classic alpha male who literally makes you swoon and then some, and it is always an experience to see how the smart-ass heroine brings them to their knees before all is said and done.

Like I said earlier, Joe and Gabrielle are the antithesis of each other, which makes it hard for either of them to see the qualities that actually draws them together. Joe, who has a colorful childhood growing up with four older sisters, is chauvinistic in his way, and wants a woman who is low maintenance, would be a good housewife (after all, he does not like to cook), would pick up after him, and also enjoy fabulous uninhibited sex of the kind that he does.

Meanwhile Gabrielle, who has an unconventional childhood at best traveling across the country with a mother who claimed to have psychic powers after their “summer of awakening”, wants a man who is enlightened and physically appealing – a tough combo to find if ever there was one. Gabrielle would rather chew her arm off than admit to the fact that Joe gets under her skin in a way that makes it impossible for her to deny how much she is affected by everything that is Joe.

However, being forced to engage as a couple means looking beyond their initial impressions and finding common ground, which leads them to give in to the heady desire and strong connection between them. While both Gabrielle and Joe are reluctant in their own ways, Joe has a harder time reconciling with his reaction towards a woman whom he considers to be crazy and not so right in the head.

I loved Joe, his chauvinism and all – I found it adorable the way he fell so helplessly for the woman who drove him stir-crazy in many ways. I loved Gabrielle too; for all her need for an enlightened man, she is no match for the charm and intensity that is Joe in every sense. Yin to her yang, it is Joe that resists towards the end, until he too of course has no choice left, but to surrender. I also had such fun getting acquainted with Gabrielle’s mother, Joe’s family, alongside with the unruly mouthed parrot of Joe’s!

Recommended for fans of Ms. Gibson and romances that features two opposites, whose journey towards their happily ever after is always a delight!

Final Verdict: It is nothing but love that draws together two people at odds with each other; what is fascinating is their journey towards reconciling with that love, which is where Ms. Gibson excels at!

“Any other reasons?”
“Yes, he’s an Aquarius”

This was a fun, short book but seriously flawed. The continuous mention of her assets was a bit ridiculous. Like, yes, we get it - this is a romance book. The pacing was also really off - there was no tension and it all just moved too quickly to its detriment. Also, I get really sick of authors using second-hand embarrassment all the time. In moderation it is okay, but in this case it made the female protagonist seem weak and stupid.

Also, I just didn't like Joe. He is, to be frank, a sexist pig. Not much swoon-worthy about him at all.

That being said, it did have its funny moments.

(4.5 stars) Absolute great read - I didn't think contemporary romance was my genre, but I'm definitely going to be more open-minded in the future. Still a 100% historical romance fan, but this book was just fantastic. It was sweet, cute, and also hysterically funny - some parts were so comedic that I was laughing so hard I had tears coming out of my eyes (one part especially, that even when trying to reread to someone else I could barely get through because I started laughing again). Definitely recommend!

I like Rachel Gibson's Idaho settings probably because that's were I live and I recognize a lot of areas she writes about.

Also on Audio:

The narrator, Richard Ferrone, ruined It Must Be Love for me (one of my very favorites by Rachel Gibson) with the spin he gave gave it. He made Joe a jerk in my ears instead of the nice guy forced into a tough situation that I read him as.

If it hit others like it did me it could explain why we haven't seen more of Rachel's work done in audio up until recently. I'll definitely stick to reading this one myself!

The book started off quite good. The plot would have been excellent.

Unfortunately, their strengths weren't focused on, and the female protagonist capitulated too easily. She was silly. It was nauseating at times. She sounded and acted like a bimbo without being endearing. She was also very easy. If a guy treated me like that – I wouldn't forgive so easily. The romance began to pale. Otherwise it would have been interesting.

But it was rather clichéd too. All the criminals appeared to be blond men and the hero was dark haired. Seriously clichéd.

I just saw this on the Hoopla site and, even though I've read the book before, thought I'd have a listen. I was in the mood for some really light and funny romance story. Rachel Gibson delivers.
Rebecca Tripp was the narrator. She did a great job.
For this class of romance, straightforward, not too angsty, I can always trust this author to entertain me.

While I love the storyline, I can't say the same about the chemistry between the hero and heroine. I just feel like something is missing between them, so much so that when they realize they're in love with each other, it doesn't feel believable at all.
