Phew! Finally done with this 500-page+ undertaking of a textbook. Reviewing textbooks is kind of weird, but I have to say that staying with this book and reading it bit by bit over almost a period of two years has made me seriously consider studying (cultural) anthropology more formally. I mean I already have a BA in Cultural Technology, why not add some cultural anthropology in there?

Seriously, after reading this book, my official position is that anthropology is for the humanities what physics is to the hard sciences---psychology would be mathematics and sociology would be chemistry. Just like studying physics, studying anthropology (especially combined with cultural studies) you can't help but look at reality and your circumstances from a more detached standpoint, more objectively as it were. You get to see that your life is the result of the mixture of an endless array of possible sets of circumstances. It teaches humility, it teaches tolerance, curiosity, it awakens a deeper awareness of what being a human person in a world of human and non-human persons is all about.

I still think it's about laughing, cooking and listening to/ playing music, but that's just me.

My favourite chapters were on sex and marriage, art, patterns of subsistence food, language, cultural change and the anthropology of futurology. Any overlap with any of my more general interests, including what I believe to be the fundamentals of human culture as exposed above, is purely coincidental, I swear.

A good book for getting a basis of the ideas and concepts of anthropology, with plenty of examples pulled from actual anthropologists writings.

A great resource that introduces and explains introductory concepts in anthropology. I especially enjoyed the perspective of culture as a tool for problem solving in a society.

Wow, there are a lot of books with "Cultural Anthropology" in the title! I was searching for the textbook for my intro class at Metro State in Denver in the fall of 1971. This one will have to suffice - close enough. In fact it might even be the right one, but a later edition. I was interested in human behaviour and physical evolution and this stuff was Greek to me... Nomadic Pastoralist, Agrarian, Hunter-Gatherer etc.. I never really got into that side of things even though my major was Anthro. Date read is approximate.

I really enjoyed reading it. Every chapter was different and interesting. I liked that there were lots of examples illustrating definitions and concepts which were given in particular parts of the book. The articles which were put inside every chapter were also absorbing, but in many cases they were put between passages of the text which sometimes made reading a little hectic. By reading it I found out many interesting and surprising things. A Great read.

I didn't think this was as good as many of my anthro texts, but it has to be hard to put together a complete volume on this topic...

It was kinda dated and had tinges of racism, but interesting. Want to read more current stuff to note the difference in cultural relativism.

A textbook for the study of anthropology based on human cultures. The roles of climate and social interactions are considered. Several cultures from different regions of the world are highlighted.
