The Sword Cross knights have come calling at Diana’s estate, this time with their mysterious leader and a demon of their own in tow. A vicious battle leaves nobody unscathed, but hell hath no fury like a woman’s dog scorned…

The reason this series continues to work so well is that it smartly took its time establishing its characters before it exploded into a conglomerate of showy action scenes and ‘ah, but I have another secret power I failed to mention’ tropes (although they also tweak this in a clever way with a bluff one character pulls off).

With our ridiculously-garbed evil leader standing revealed, we get some solid action beats and some twisty revelations, including the threat of somebody else behind the scenes pulling everybody’s strings.

Between mortal peril, literally, Snow’s cover being blown, and some serious demonic glow-ups, there’s a lot of smartly delivered action that actually has a brain in its head and delivers meaningful consequences for the narrative moving forward (to say nothing of finally establishing a core cast, more or less).

It especially treats Marbas well, who comes away from the reveal of the man behind the mask (and bless them for not wasting too much time getting to this reveal, since it doesn’t amount to much) with a clue about ways to fight him that he files away for later, showing that he’s not just cultured muscle.

Once super demon form gets invoked and Naberius goes to crazy town, things are in full-on shonen battle mode, but with the twist that it actually gives Wisteria a lot more prominence in the story as something other than defenceless blind girl who functions as a conscience.

Seeing her and Marbas working together and her stepping up (to say nothing of her joy at being able to do so) as their bond deepens even further is a great touch. There’s the nice acknowledgment from Marbas that spending this much time with a human is definitely changing him, but a further recognition (finally) that maybe that’s not a bad thing.

Diana also gets a lot of closure from this section, even as so very much is being taken from her, and we get some well realized flashbacks to not only her history with Naberius, but Marbas’ history with him as well. The ongoing bromance between them is such a treat.

The back section of this volume concerns Snow and some of his colleagues from the British-Afghan War, which adds some nice fleshing out of Snow, while not shying away from PTSD and the horrors of combat.

Of course, it also has ties to the main storyline, in a rather silly bit where Snow recognizes some people as demons while nobody else does, even though their designs mean they might as well have just written it across their foreheads. Still, the lesser bits are really kept to a minimum this volume.

4 stars - the action was good and despite my misgivings about the wholesale turn to shonen last time, this volume balances those over-the-top fights with some really good character work that makes the action not as completely pointless as it might seem otherwise and it feels like things are in a good place moving forward.

I really like we got to see a chaotic yet lovely closer to the Blackbell arc, as well as learn more about Commander of the Knights of the Sword Cross. However, he is still a bit of a mystery.
It was also really cute seeing Marbas starting to realize how much his connection with Wisteria is changing him, and I love seeing the more unexpected ways that he shows his emotions. The cliffhanger ending involving Wisteria’s brother: Snow, has me very curious (and a bit worried) to see how things go in the next volume.

This volume begins with thr middle of a battle. Marbas does a limited release of his powers to help fight Naberius. The plot thickens at the end, of course, and I'm curious to see where Snow's subplot goes.
