Now that I'm in the Z series, the long, drawn-out battles are starting. There was much more talking and exposition than I cared for. I miss the lightheartedness of Dragon Ball (and the softer, round, or "chubby" drawing style), but this volume still made me laugh a couple times. I'm not a huge fan of Z, but I watched it a lot when I was young, so I'll be reading the series to see how well I remember it.
For any readers who doesn't know, the Dragon Ball Z anime is one of the top two most successful imported shows in the US (the other being Sailor Moon, I think). Despite its popularity, it's always getting criticized- rightfully so, for being almost comically slow-paced. The manga is leaps and bounds more enjoyable because it moves at a rapid pace.

E se Goku non fosse umano? In questo volume scopriamo le sue origini e facciamo la conoscenza dei Saiyan, razza aliena brutale e rivoltosa. Davanti alla nuova calamità, i vecchi nemici diventano amici e Goku compie un sacrificio per salvare suo figlio Gohan e tutti gli altri, ma la situazione di pace non è destinata a durare. C'è bisogno di allenarsi ancora... nell'aldilà!

Finally, Vegeta! Good volume, with a very challenging opponent and it's of course nice to learn a little about Goku's background.

Début de Dragon Ball Z.
Cinq ans après le dernier Tenkaichi Budokai, Goku accompagné de son fils San Gohan se rende chez Kame Sennin pour lui rendre visite. Dans le même temps, un étrange extraterrestre très puissant recherche quelqu'un. Il tombe sur Piccolo puis sur Goku. Il se nomme Raditz, il est un saiyan (peuple guerrier très fier originaire de la planète Végéta, détruite à ce jour). Il se présente également comme le frère de Son Goku, dont le nom de naissance est Kakarotto. Ce peuple belliqueux a envoyé des bébés sur d'autres planètes pour détruire leurs populations et les revendre au plus offrant. Là était la mission de Goku mais après sa grave chute quand il était petit, il a tout oublié et est devenu gentil et obéissant.
Raditz prend Gohan en otage afin que Goku le rejoigne dans sa conquête de l'espace (avec les deux autres saiyans restants). Piccolo se joint à Goku pour le combattre. Raditz est plus fort mais l'intervention de Gohan, dont la force est décuplée par ses sentiments et est supérieure à celle de son père, leur permet de gagner du temps. Finalement, Piccolo utilise sa nouvelle technique, le Makanko Sappo, il réussit à tuer Raditz mais aussi Goku qui s'est sacrifié pour l'empêcher d'esquiver.
Raditz les avertit que les deux autres saiyans sont plus forts que lui et viendront sur Terre dans un an. Pour cette raison, Goku, dans l'autre monde, va aller s'entrainer chez un certain maitre Kaio. De son côté, Piccolo va entrainer Gohan pendant ce laps de temps.

La relation entre Piccolo et Gohan faisant partie, à mes yeux, des piliers de la série, je suis ravie d'y être arrivée.

This volume marks the start of Dragon Ball Z part and it clearly shows why DBZ is one of the most popular shounen anime of all time. I still remember watching the first episodes of DBZ without previously watching the original Dragon Ball and still thoroughly enjoying them.
There is a clear shift in the tone of the series towards more seriousness than the previous ones. Although Piccolo seemed like a great threat before it never seemed like Goku had no chance against him. But with Raditz it is different, Goku is outclassed in every possible way and in the end the one who truly defeated Raditz was Piccolo. And even though we all know death in Dragon Ball is not permanent the death of Goku still hits hard.
Also, I haven't noticed before when reading in English but Gohan is so polite compared to his parents it's adorable. On a side note, it seems like Goku still lacks the maturity to be a father. I mean he is a good father but he also seems a bit aloof towards his family (Not that we see much family interaction in this volume).
Overall, this is probably my most favourite volume so far and I am looking forward to these first arcs of DBZ very much.

E se potessimo sapere qualcosa in più sulla famiglia di Son Goku? Questo personaggio così tranquillo ha una parentela un po' complicata. Torna in scena già il Grande Demone Piccolo, ma a sorpresa non con il ruolo di villain. E un altro personaggio piccolo e interessante fa la sua comparsa. Vedremo...

Un passage intéressant et qui révèle la véritable identité de Goku. Ce tome et surtout enrichissant car on y rencontre Gohan et une autre facette de aussi bien Goku entant que père et Piccolo.

Relectura de la etapa "Z". Increíble como a pesar que uno se conoce la historia de memoria prácticamente, de todas maneras se disfruta como ningún otro manga/comic lo hace.

Con questo volume comincia ufficialmente la serie Z ed il livello dei disegni inizia ad essere davvero spettacolare.
