The third series of the celebrated Vox Machina Origins comics, from Critical Role and Dark Horse!
Vox Machina enjoy a week in Westruun's lap of luxury leading up to the Winter's Crest Festival. But that costs coin, which has a bad habit of running out, so they join an underground fighting ring and bash their way to cash. Unfortunately, their ring-fighting turns out to be just a warm-up for a cold reality when a mysterious attack on Winter's Crest festivities leaves the whole town magically frozen--including one of their own. Vox Machina will have to save the day again, against a much bigger foe than they first realized!
Prepare for more misadventure with series III of Critical Role: Vox Machina Origins, from the New York Times bestselling team of Jody Houser (Orphan Black, Stranger Things), Olivia Samson, MSASSYK (Isola, Gotham Academy), Diana Sousa (Isola, Crowded) and Ariana Maher (James Bond, Xena)!
Collects Critical Role: Vox Machina Origins III #1-#6.
A really entertaining Vox Machina sequel that builds up to their fight with the Dread Emperor. This has their fight against a white dragon and gives some of the foreshadowing that the pre-stream game had for the build-up to the Chroma Conclave. Sadly, I'm taking a star away because it ends on a cliffhanger to be resolved into IV. The art is more consistent this time around and I think it's still very much the enjoyable story that we come to expect from the Critical Role folk.
This third volume is entertaining, but a bit weaker than the first two volumes, as it feels like an incomplete story. The climax of the story is a winter-themed battle, but this is just a stepping-stone to a larger mystery that isn't resolved by the end of the volume. Still some nice moments, but a step down. (B+)
The third volume picks up shortly after volume 2 with the party still in Westruun. The group gets into some shenanigans involving and underground fight ring, an ice dragon, and deals with some unpleasantness from Vax and Vex’s past. The character design gets better each volume. Where the characters left off, things are gonna get real interesting next volume.
4.5 stars - My favourite one so far! The Vox Machina gang has the best chemistry and has quickly become one of my favourite found families. Peak banter, beautiful illustrations and fun adventures, so all-around the best time.
Percy is here, the gang gets into a pit fighting competition (plenty of fun during long runs on the show, don't know that it does as much for the comic reader, but eh, here we are) and there is some plot twists, magic and a Dragon shows up. Scooby Doo-gang style they have to solve a mystery and save a friend. The comics medium is a great way to see Critical Role stories told and this is an easy recommendation for a lot of readers. Mystery, action, fantasy, etc. There is a lot to appreciate about these books.
More of a 3.5 as not as entertaining as the previous two.
Took me a bit to read this one, largely because the text was problematic. It had its moments. I was a bit confused as I don’t recall Pike having dark hair in the previous one. Unsure about the humanoid…ish…form of the white dragon. Given that vorugal never shifted, I’m puzzled that this one, who seems far younger, did. Also, would be hard to hide amongst humans if one were that obvious.
The art felt different in this one to me for some reason? I was surprised to see it not wrap up after the first two ended really nicely and allowed for more standalone reading, but I guess that's more true to its D&D source material. Likewise, it also felt a little more scattered compared to the tight storyline of the first two.
Okay hear me out… it’s just too good😂 Nicole, I’m looking at you (again). Please get on this. Honestly, Jill can afford to be reading this too. It’s just some friends being silly, and who doesn’t love that?
If you enjoyed volume II volume III is the same food with extra spice. The adventure more epic. Tons of action. Percy and Pyke solidifying their roles as members of the group with more page-stay. Things are only getting more, more, more, reveals, intrigue and more of the world.
Loved everything about this volume from the underground fight club to the new arc and return of the Clasp… The art and witty dialogue was *chef’s kiss* as always. Excited to see what happens next.
Another fun outing with Vox Machina in comic book form as they take on new missions and look for ways to make some coin. This time around a menace is unleashed on a town, freezing many people within it. Vox Machina is determined to track down who did this. Note, this volume does end in the middle of the story arc, leaving me looking forward to the next one.
Fun art, fun story. I enjoy the characters. I also need to sew Percy's wardrobe. Add it to my never ending list of sewing projects which probably won't get finished. Looking forward to volume 4. And now time to actually watch the show...
I watched the animated series last year and, although I haven't watched the stream, I instantly fell in love with this whacky group. The comic captured perfectly each character's personality and the dynamics of the group. The art is great, with bonus pages of each issue's cover. I look forward to vol. 4 to see how the story will unfold. Rating: 4/5 Trinkets 🐻🐻🐻🐻
Actual rating 4.5! This is a great addition for any Critical Role fan who wants more of Vox Machina’s shenanigans. The story has plenty of action and a little drama, but not much by way of plot. The art style is wonderful and each character has their personality shine through, primarily Grog and the twins. A definite recommend for CR fans!
