No magic or any superpowers. Simple and logical. A fresh perspective where Ravan is a narrator. These days Amish Tripathy has given this style of writing a new publicity through Shiva's trilogy and Ram series, and hence lot of writer are exploring. But it's quite proud thing that Marathi literature was pretty rich in it since way before.
What world knows about Ravan is all about Ramayana part. whereas this book is good proof that Ramayan was hardly 10-15% of his life. His journey was much more than that. Also, there are quite good pieces of writings which are effective even today.
A lovely read. Rest depends on what u can take from it.

It is so very rightly said that without the knowledge, the feeling and the experiencing of darkness, we would never be able to appreciate the light.

There is hardly anyone amongst us who has not read or heard about the tale of Ramayan and how great Lord Ram defeated the evil Ravan.

Typically, all these stories are the depictions from the side of Lord Ram, showing the life and journey of the Prince of Ayodha, his great valor and his epic victory over the evil King of Lanka.

In the book, ‘Ravan: The King of Rakshasas’ by Sharad Tandale, we see the different side of the coin, as the novel illustrates the story from Ravan’s standpoint, illustrating the history of defeat.

The encapsulation of the journey from Dashagriva to Ravan, The King of Rakshasas has been skillfully annotated by the author.

There is a common notion that nobody is born evil, but rather it is the circumstances that surround and the environment they live in that may force any individual to take actions that are against the norms.

Similarly, it was the circumstances that made Ravan who he was, a perfect contradiction of both the positives and negatives, a scholar, a devotee, compassionate to those for whom he cared, yet someone who was also egoistic, cruel and selfish.

Writing about any mythological book, especially about a villain that has been hated by the majority is no doubt a tough task, yet the author has managed to do it rightly and has been able to shed light on one of the most complex villain ever narrated. Hence I am going to give this book FIVE STARS ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The best part of this book that there is no stories about magic and enchantments. Purely logical story without any mentioning of exaggerated extraordinary powers of gods & monsters. It make us to rethink about what we learnt about Ravan as a villain.
Must read ..

I think I m starting to love this genre- Mythology.
Sharad Tandale's Ravana : The King Of Rakshasas is an amazing book that revolves around the famous villain in Indian Mythology, Ravan.
It is a compelling story of Ravana with Ravan himself being the narrator. We start reading this and we get introduced to his childhood days...and there are sort of charts in the book describes the lineage which is also interesting!
The book will not let you go as it grips the readers from the first page.
When we get into a book about a character who is so famous but only for one of its trait we want something more.. and this gives you that. We get to understand the whole persona of Ravan which is amazing and at the same time interesting.
There are two sides two his character that has been developed into today's people minds .... The villain who abducted Sita and The 'gyani' as in very knowledgeable and a great devotee.
You will love this book if u r into mythology!

Raavan: The King of Rakshasas
Written by Sharad Tandale
Translated by Prathamesh Patil
Indian culture is rich in mythology, filled with mystical creatures, frightening curses, powerful Devas, and Evil Asuras I have grown up listening to tales from Ramayan and Mahabharat.
When I saw this book I immediately picked it up, as it's a story that offer us a Raavan's perspective.

To say i was invested would be an understatement, Sharad Tandale is a splendid storyteller, Raavan is such a layered character, a warrior, a king, a brother fighting for what he thinks is justice. This is a tale that explores good and evil, justice and injustice and how it's a two sides of same coin.I got to understand King Raavan's position, decisions and how it played out in grand scheme of things.

I never thought I would say this , but that ending with Raavan's last words to Mandodari, , Shurpa broke my heart. A heady cocktail of engagingly presented narration, strong characterization and fresh take on a unforgettable villain from the epic Ramayana.
4+ stars for this unforgettable read.

There are books that remain on your mind long after you have finished reading them. Some characters you relate with someone in your own life. The book remains so much a part of your subconscious that your mind find connections between small instances in your everyday life to a particular event in the book. There are books that make you question your sense of right and wrong. They might even shift your sense of moral compass a couple of degrees here and there. This book is all that and some more.

The whole book is narrated by the Ravan or Dashagriva as he was called in his younger days. His journey from nothing to the King of Lanka made me root for him. Who doesn’t love a rags to riches story? His philosophy on Rakshas Sanskriti made me wonder, “is the difference between civilised and uncivilised, just a matter of perspective?” His efforts to create a just society for Daanav, Daitya, Asura and all another assorted non-aryans reminded me of so many other idols in our own history. He was absolutely feared by his enemy and equally loved by his people. It made me wonder, “don’t all leaders try to do the same?” Sure, he had flaws. Some very glaring. But so did many pioneers. All pioneers are rule-breakers by definition. He defeated Indra, imprisoned Shani, brought the Yam himself to his knees. Did he take his bravado too far and brought doom upon him and the whole Rakshash Sanskriti that he built brick by brick? The history is replete with such pioneers who took their invincibility little too far.

A good book provokes our mind. It makes us question our way of thinking. Sure, sometimes it raises more question than it answers. But, I guess that what books are for. So go for it!

What a book ! It was a very brave step from the writer & he did excellent job. RAAVAN always widely portrayed as being an evil character though he had so many great qualities that even Gods bowed down before him - not due to fear, but with respect.

This book told the story of Dashgriva (Raavan) from his own perspective. His childhood, his relationship with his mother, brother, grandfather all are described so beautifully.

If you ignore 2 or 3 deeds of raavana from this book, you will forced to rethink about him whether he was really a villain.

Beauty of this book is its written very logically, book didn't mentioned any irrelevant scenarios which we seen or read in Ramayana. in ramayana only 15-20% of raavan was covered but in this book all of his life is portrayed very logically without any magical touch to it.

The author has told or describe raavan as a personality & he had done thoroughly a big research on him and its looks in his writing. Every line of this book is soo engaging and captivating.
Raavan was the extraordinary scholar, a capable creating its own kingdom with new culture & become ruler, a maestro of the Veena, a big devotee of Lord Mahadev this name "Raavana" was also given by Lord Shiva himself to him.

Book teaches the reader about the power of determination and dedication. Ravana was a man of determination. here i want to talk about the other characters mandodari, Sumali, Prahastha, meghnad, kumbhakarn & Bali are very well described. amoung them i like mandodari how she talk
about men dominated word "whoever wins in any war but woman always lost".
Lot of things where new for me from this book specially all lineage of raavana. from Sukesh till meghnad.
A Must-Read Book, i will recommend it to everyone.

Ravan by Sharad Tandale

Quite a book enjoyed reading every line. The author has treated “Ravan” as a personality and not a demon. He has done an extensive research and narrated his tale right from his childhood. He has shared about his ideas, visions and what all transpired right in his moulding years which made him how he is. There is so much to learn about Ravan who we just think as a villain and burn every year.

After reading this book I learnt so much from his personality too by the end of the book there is one thing that becomes clear is that for years we all believe the stories we have been told and it’s convenient too believe it too but the author has done a fantastic job in present the real Ravan.

I found myself speed reading as I wanted to know all about him as a person. This can be called Ravanaya and I would recommend all the mytho fans to read and know the truth about the real Ravan.

🪅The book " Ravan" is depicted down on the great Hindu mythology The Ramayana by Sharad Tandle in a very wonderful way that anyone can read and will surely admire. Everyone knows about the tale of Ramayan that is written on the defeat of Ravan by Lord Rama.

🪅In the book Ramayan, everything was depicted from the point of view of Lord Rama while in this book we will read about the story from the other side which means Ravan's POV.

🪅This sounds interesting like damn interesting to read about the story describing the history of defeat. Read the book and know it all yourselves. The language used is lucid and the book is awesomely written.

🪅The writer must be admired for carrying forward a profound study to compose such a marvellous book. I have to say that this is one of the best mythology books I have come across with. The book is a fascinating fictional read. The book includes everything, the story of him from the core, it's just how he become like that.

🪅An effective biographical portrayal of Ravan bestows a lot of insights into the almighty Rakshasraj king's demeanour. This book gives a different perspective towards the greatest villain of history. He was the extraordinary scholar, a capable ruler, a maestro of the Veena, a devotee of Lord Mahadev, and in fact, this name "Ravana" was also given by Lord Shiva himself to him.

🪅You will detest him, pity him, admire him and would want to hate him to no limit but there is no way you can deny his charisma. Ultimately you will feel that he is not that bad as he is always shown. The author had probed Ravana's life and shares the storyline in a very interesting way.

Thank You.
Happy Reading 📚
I would recommend this book to every person, who loves to read mythology.
