Dark Protectors #15.5

‎A Vampire's Kiss

Rate this book
From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Rebecca Zanetti comes a new story in her Dark Protectors/Rebels series…

Unlike several of his brothers, Athan Maxwell accepted the curse inherent in his DNA and solved the problem a century ago by mating his one true mate and saving her life at the same time. Now they only meet up four times a year to exchange blood and keep themselves healthy because that was the deal. Yet after a hundred years, his mate has only become more beguiling and intriguing, and when he discovers a new threat on her tail, his promise of sitting back and leaving her alone goes right out of the window.

Ivy O’Dwyer has enjoyed the last century as an immortal being, evolving from being a farmer’s daughter to the successful CEO of an Internet company. Sure, life gets lonely without the chance to date, and yes, she’s grateful to her vampire mate for saving her life so long ago, and yet the dreams she has of the sexy male won’t desert her. So when he storms in to save her life, in all vampire-possessive mode, it’s difficult to stand her ground. Unfortunately, when they finally discover that living forever but alone isn’t worth it, it might be too late.

**Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you'll enjoy each one as much as we do.**

A Vampire’s Kiss by Rebecca Zanetti
Dark Protectors series #14.5. Paranormal romance. Can be read as a stand-alone but better read as part of the series.
Athan Maxwell found his true mate over a century ago. Since she was naive and from an isolated area, Athan made arrangements to meet up with her only a couple of times a year to take blood and left her to enjoy her life. Current day and he can’t stay away from her for long periods but also finds she is much more independent now. Ivy is feeling a bit lonely and looks forward to finally having a full relationship with Athan.

I enjoyed their laughter and enjoyment of each other. Oh sure, he was dominating like an old bear, but she enjoyed his trying.
I feel you need to be up-to-date with the series as this book drop serious spoilers from Garrett’s book.
I admit Athan’s parents amused me quite a bit. They’ve been around a long time and together seem like a nice couple, but apart? Wise cracks, chases and mayhem.

I listened to an audiobook version while following along with an ebook. The narrator is Stella Bloom and she does a marvelous performance although I did have to speed it up a bit for conversational speed.

This book marks a rather momentous milestone for this die-hard Rebecca Zanetti fangirl. This is the 50th Rebecca Zanetti book I have read. There is no other author that I have read more of. This epic journey has spanned over six different series and includes full installments as well as novellas. It seems only fitting that this milestone for me would fall on a novella for the series that started it all for me: Dark Protectors!

I’ve enjoyed the novellas almost as much as the full installments. The novellas are almost always centered on a character that was introduced in a previous installment but had a very small role in the story. For a character driven reader like me, the novellas provide additional character development that wasn’t provided in previous installment. This is what I love about novellas, and that there are always cameo appearances from other characters in the Dark Protector world.

This story takes place right after the Realm’s war with the Kurjans (#15) and has the Maxwell brothers (there’s a bunch of them), dealing with the aftershocks of the end of the war with Kurjans and an old grudge against the Maxwell family. The book summary lays out the whole storyline that can be read in one sitting. I especially loved the author’s poem at the start of the story. Kind of a dark one, but that’s how Zanetti rolls. It was in the spirit of the story of the queen in 1001 Nights who told a story to the king every night so that he wouldn’t cut her head off.

A Vampire’s Kiss is novella 14.5 of the Dark Protectors series by author Rebecca Zanetti. It is a standalone paranormal romantic suspense with a HEA.

A century ago Ivy O’Dwyer was just a farmer’s daughter about to die when Athan Maxwell mated her and gave her immortality.

During that time, she’s amassed knowledge, money, strength of body and mind. The only thing she doesn’t have is someone to share her goals and ambitions with.

As per their original deal, Athan meets with Ivy four times a year to exchange blood, but now that she’s grown into herself, can he stay away? Especially since he’s discovered there’s a thread against her.

Rebecca Zanetti sure knows how to pack in EVERYTHING in a story, even when it’s short. A Vampire’s Kiss has action and sexiness, old family bonds and new horizons. I love reading Rebecca’s books and I especially like reading every bit of the Dark Protectors universe.

I loved Ivy’s fierceness and Athan’s forethought about Ivy’s maturity at a time when women were little more than property, giving her the time she needed to find herself. I of course loved their frienemies sexy banter that only added to the tension and fun.

This novella can be read alone with its well-placed back story and world building info and also ties nicely into the overall series arc. The Maxwell brothers are awesome! can’t wait for more!

4.5 stars!

I loved diving back into the Dark Protectors world with a Dark Protectors/Rebels spin-off, and the introduction of a new family, the Maxwells, a family of vampires cursed to an early death unless they can find their true mates by the time they reach 400 years.

Athan Maxwell found his mate in human, Ivy. He saved her life in the 1800s, and by becoming his mate, she saved his right back. But he didn’t want to force her into a life with him when she still had so much living to do, so they parted ways, only meeting up 1 – 4 times a year to share the blood that they need to maintain their immortality. But when Athan learns that Ivy is in trouble, he drops everything to run to her side and protect the woman that he has come to secretly care for.

Ivy has made the most of her second chance at life, and in her 150 years of practical immortality she has worked to make the world a better place, even working with a secret ally to take down online predators. Her mating with Athan means that she’s never touched, let alone been with any other man, and though she looks forward to their brief meetings and misses Athan when he’s gone, she’s happy. And then her mate comes barging back into her life being all alpha possessive, insisting that she needs his protection, and their well-established dynamic is about to shift.

Oh, I do love me a growly, protective vampire, and Athan is fantastic! He has sat back and let Ivy live her life, grow in confidence, and become a truly magnificent woman, and now that he’s actually spending time with her, and her life is under threat, he’s realising that it’s time to finally claim her properly (commence lots of growling, biting and “mine”!).

It’s a great set-up, with a fun back-and-forth as Athan and Ivy bicker and argue, but underneath it all there is a lot of love for each other, and a whole truck-load of sexual tension. We’re talking over a century of longing, and when they finally give into it… holy damn, it’s hot!

But they’ve got unexpected dangers to face, and the events of this book are very cleverly tied in with events in the Dark Protectors series, bringing action and excitement, and I loved watching it all go down.

We’re introduced to some of Athan’s brothers, all under the same curse that he is, and there are already some great stories brewing there. I’m so excited to get to know these characters more, and can’t wait for this spin-off series to continue!

4.5 stars!

Rebecca Zanetti you officially have a new fan! I absolutely LOVED this book! Yet another fantastic read and new to me author found thanks to 1001 Dark Nights novellas from Blue Box Press! I think this is my favorite yet which is saying something because I’ve loved every 1001 novella I’ve read. I’ll be giving a spoiler free review of both the book itself and the audiobook too (which was AWESOME!) so let’s get to it! First and foremost I started rooting for Ivy and Athan in chapter one when it became clear Athan was our dark night hero who saw her even when others didn’t. Saved from typhus after her father calls upon Athan to rescue her by changing her from mere dying human to…something else entirely. We swiftly but not without proper pacing shift to the future where Ivy is a self made woman busting predators online. She needs no rescuing, even though Athan still keeps her safe from the shadows he lets her chart her own path. Y’all know I love consent being an important plot point so I loved how Zanetti walked the line of having an ancient alpha protector while letting her chart her own course ,and choose her own destiny. This includes how much they are entangled by both a magic matehood, and real life living. While Athan fights a secret war, he does everything in his power to keep her safe from it, which felt very realistic and true to his protector character.

The world building behind Athan and his kind was very rich even for a novella, and has me really excited to dive into this series as a whole to learn more. I really loved the pacing of information and that Zanetti kept me guessing right up to the incredible finish, and to my happy surprise my guesses were always wrong which I LOVE!! I’m seriously addicted to plot twists and that gasp moment and Zanetti delivered! I also loved the peek at his family, (especially Granny) we were given and hope there’s more of her awaiting in the Dark Protector series!

Vampires Kiss was a fantastic afternoon read and first leap into this authors works! This novella has me headed to go order more books in the Dark Protector world (woo hoo there’s 18?!) from Zanetti immediately because I can’t wait to learn more, especially with this taste of her rich world building skills! I absolutely recommend this book if you love fated mates, dark protector, vampires, bad a$$ FMC, I love you but I won’t make you love me, and who did this to you tropes you’ll devour this novella and be racing to order more from Zanetti!

Now for the audiobook, I LOVED the narrator Stella Bloom! She has a fantastic range of voices and accents, and each character has very unique and distinguishable voices as well. She seriously nails the Scottish/Irish type accent and I will definitely be looking for more titles with her reading, especially if they come with characters with accents! Her male voices were especially fantastic and never felt forced in any way, she had subtle shifts in tone with Athan that really brought a lot of depth to his character and his past. I can’t recommend the audiobook enough and I’m so grateful to Brilliance Audio for sending it my way because it pulled me out of a big reading slump!

Cute

Athan and Ivy. We met the Maxwell name and family curse in previous novellas and now we meet another brother and his mate. They were alluded to in Raine’s story but now we know why they lived separately for so long and how they worked towards a HEA. We also met Grams who is my favorite female character so far! 3000 years and still kicking butt 🙌🏻 The action part was more subdued then the longer books, but still impactful with the death of a major Karjan character and the return of the big evil character, which has me wondering what that means for future books! Quick and fun read!

Must read!

Another absolute must read written by Rebecca Zanetti! I absolutely loved the story between Athan and Ivy. The Maxwell family is very interesting and I really have enjoyed reading about these men, their curse, and their mates. This was a very well written story that pulled me in from the beginning the story and I found myself invested in all of the characters and how the story would end. I listened to the Audible and was very happy with everything about it. Definitely a must read in my opinion!

Ivy and Athan are fated mated who have made an arrangement to exchange blood each year in order to keep Athan alive and Ivy immortal.

This is a side story in the overall Dark Protectors world and takes place right after Garrets Destiny.

I enjoyed this novella but wished it was a full book and had the back story of the Maxwell family. Love this world and always happy to dive into this world of immortals and their mates!!

3.75stars—A VAMPIRE’S KISS is instalment 14.5 and novella in Rebecca Zanetti’s contemporary, adult DARK PROTECTORS/REBELS erotic, paranormal romance series, and a part of the 1001 Dark Nights multi-authored series. This is vampire Athan Maxwell, and Ivy O’Dwyer’s story line. A VAMPIRE’S KISS can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty.Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary but I recommend reading the series in order for back story and cohesion as there is an ongoing premise throughout.

NOTE: The events of A VAMPIRE’S KISS run parallel to the timeline and events of GARRETT’S DESTINY (Book 15)

SOME BACKGROUND: A thousand years earlier, a number of immortal warriors went through a ritual that, if they survived, hardened their bodies against attack, a ritual meant to create a group of Seven known as The Shield. The Shield was created to protect the world from an evil race of vampires known as the Kurjans, their sect group known as the Cysts, and ultimately a rogue warrior once considered a friend- Ulric-a male of immense power. To protect the human race, Ulric was captured, and along with two of the Seven, was encapsulated in one of three spheres for all eternity but the spheres are no longer capable of holding the ‘Seven’, and the warriors have returned to Earth, no longer to prevent Ulric’s escape.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Athan and Ivy) A VAMPIRE’S KISS focuses on the acrimonious relationship between vampire Athan Maxwelll and Ivy O’Dwyer.Approximately one hundred and seventy years earlier Ivy O’Dwyer lay dying of typhus, and her father made a pact with a powerful vampire, selling his daughter to save his land. Athan Maxwell knew Ivy O’Dwyer was his mate, and in an effort to allow Ivy her freedom, agreed to feed and meet only a few times per year in order to stay alive.Fast forward to present day, Athan knows it is time to permanently claim Ivy as his mate, ensuring both of the survive the upcoming battles. The war with the Kurjans (evil race of vampires) is evolving; the Maxwell family curse has yet to be eradicated; and Ivy’s need to take down the lowest of the low is placing her in the direct line of fire. What ensues is the claiming of Ivy, and the potential fall out when the Kurjans target Ivy for death.

The relationship between Ivy and Athan is one of convenience but Athan has yet to formerly claim Ivy as his mate, and in doing so, has placed them both in danger. Ivy is an independent, very stubborn and determined female with plans of her own; she is a target of the Kurjans, and Athan’s powers are waning in the face of separation from the woman he loves. The $ex scenes are limited, intimate and passionate but I did not feel any palpable sexual attraction as there was no active romance or wooing, only duty and fate.

We are introduced to Athan’s grandparents Mia and Cathal; two of his brothers Klyde and Jasper, Ivy’s friend and Jasper’s wayward mate Leah, as well as the cameo by vampire/member of the Seven Benjamin Reese.

A VAMPIRE’S KISS is a quick paced, fast read; a story of need and desire, duty and honor, acceptance and love. The premise is engaging; the romance is fated; the characters are energetic and charismatic.

Series: Dark Protectors #15.5
Rating: 2 stars - It was ok

Athan Maxwell and his family are cursed to die if they don’t find their mate by their 400th year. Athan solved this problem by finding his mate and saving her, but then letting her go to live her life without him. They only meet up a few times a year to exchange blood to keep each other immortal. But when the enemy finds Ivy, Athan refuses to leave her alone anymore.

Well I am sad to say this but this book didn’t work for me. Athan and Ivy’s relationship was basically a marriage of convenience. He didn’t really want to be mated but did it so he could continue his job as a hunter. I didn’t like Athan at all. He is controlling, pushy, and his actions showed that he didn’t want the true Ivy. He wanted a biddable wife who would stay safe, not the strong, independent woman who knows her own mind. Also he was constantly calling her a brat when she was trying to voice her opinion and stand up for herself and I hate that.

Ivy was an interesting heroine. She has been living her life to the fullest and created many businesses, including her new one of hunting online predators. I liked how she didn’t give into Athan’s demands of being a good little wife. I was very disappointed that she decided to mate him fully after he stated his feelings. Nothing about his actions showed he loved and appreciated this woman but she accepted his declaration and fell into her feelings for him. This was the only time I didn’t really like her.

Overall, this was not my favorite Dark Protectors book. I continued reading in the hopes their relationship would get better but it didn’t for me. I did like Leah and grandma Nia. I don’t know if I am going to enjoy the Maxwell brother’s future stories but I will at least give them a chance.

Well, what can I say? I love this series and am excited any time I see a new book come out from this world. This is a short novella type story that introduces us to the Maxwell's, specifically Athan Maxwell and his mate Ivy. This story is part of the 1001 series where authors write a short story that is able to be read as a stand alone in order to get their works out to new readers. The good thing is - if you are an existing reader, it actually moves the story arc of the existing plot forward.

I read a lot of books and we are already many, many books into this series so I'm not sure if this is right or not, but I do not think we have been introduced to the Maxwell's before (I could be wrong, I just don't remember). The interesting thing is that the Maxwell's seem to be a new and unique family that exist within the Realm to hunt werewolves. These werewolves are not shifters - per se - and are being created by a Kurgen scientist (see....new plot direction). But, it brings everything full circle when we get to see Benny and the news gets to the Maxwell's about Dane's death and Ulric's return. Apparently the Kurgen's and the Maxwell's have been at war a very long time and the truce they had is now null and void.

So, the best of both worlds. New characters and plot lines, with everything fitting into the existing and (getting more chaotic) storyline.

Also, I wanted to make a mention that I listened to most of this on audio and think the narrator Stella Bloom, did a great job. I always especially love it when there is a narrator who nails the accents and this book has many characters with that wonderful Irish brogue. Loved it.

So, we have now met a new and especially interesting family in the Realm and the breadcrumbs have already been laid down for much more to come..

Can't wait :)

1001 Dark Nights
A Vampire’s Kiss by Rebecca Zanetti

Have you heard of these novellas from 1001 Dark Nights? This was my 1st one and it won’t be my last! It’s a novella that is separate from an author’s books to give you a taste of their writing. What a clever idea. I will be checking out the back catalog for sure.

A Vampire’s Kiss is set in the same world as Zanetti’s Dark Protector / Rebel world. In this story we meet Athan Maxwell, a vampire who saved his fated mate’s life and became bonded, saving both of their lives. Now they only meet up four times a year to exchange blood to keep themselves healthy. Athan knows that his mate is a strong woman, he’s attracted to her independence & wit but his guilt over making her immortal makes him stick to the deal of only meeting up four times a year.

However, when he discovers a new threat on her life, his promise of sitting back and leaving her alone goes right out of the window.

A Vampire’s Kiss gave quite a bit of backstory on the world that perhaps isn’t necessarily needed in a novella. Thankfully the story was intriguing and fast paced. Did I mention there was some spice to it too? 😉

This books has:
♥️ Fated mates
♥️ “Touch her and die” vibes
♥️ Steam
♥️ Car chases
♥️ Vampires
All in under 200 pages!

I was gifted this book from Brilliance Audio and am so grateful. I was able to pop my head into this complex and detailed world. Narrator Stella Bloom was fantastic. She had American & Irish accents that transported me. Her inflections and intonations gave each character a unique voice that made for an enjoyable experience. If you have the opportunity, go check out the audiobook.

I honestly don’t know how this author always packs so much emotion into a short story every single time. Athan and Ivy have been mated for well over 100 years, but they haven’t been together. Athan seeks out Ivy a few times a year when he needs to feed. Ivy, having been kept in the periphery of the world of vampires, doesn’t realize how much she doesn’t know about what being a vampire mate entails. They have an agreement. Athan lets Ivy live her life the way she wants as long as she stays safe. Or so she thought.

Of course, Athan being a vampire and a Maxwell has had more control over Ivy’s life than she knew. Ivy has grown to be strong, independent, and a warrior in her own right. Finding out there has always been someone looking over her shoulder is a blow to Ivy’s ego and her confidence. It’s gutting.

As is usually the case, the author gives us so much chemistry with this couple. While Athan was very much an alpha male, he also was very aware of what being mated to a Maxwell meant and wanted to give Ivy her freedom while it was still possible. But once that line was crossed, he was no holds barred.

On top of the usual chemistry, there is also the usual action and danger. Things moved at a fast clip and pulled me along for the ride. I love getting these peeks at other lineages in this paranormal universe.

A Vampire’s Kiss is a novella in Rebecca Zanetti’s Dark Protector series and it features Ivy and Athan. Athan saved Ivy way back in the day from dying of Typhus and in return she gives him blood a few times a year to survive. They are mates but not full ones and Athan can tell they are both getting weaker with out completing the whole mating ritual. And now is definitely not the time to be weak. Athan’s family, The Maxwell’s are back at war with a psycho werewolf species.

I found Ivy to be spunky and independent and honestly thought she took the whole paranormal reveal and immortality thing really well. She wants to do good things for the world while she’s living and I admired her good will intentions.

Athan was hot obviously, tall, dark, handsome vampire. Yep every time. He was a bit dumb thinking that Ivy would just submit to him once they completed the mating. Silly male.

I really enjoyed the short interlude into Athan’s family. His grandparents were a riot so much so I do want to read the other stories involving The Maxwells.

A Vampire’s Kiss was fast paced and was full of exciting action scenes especially for a novella. It was spicy, funny and even cute. Definitely give it a go if you love vampire romances.

Thank you so much to Social Butterfly PR, 1001 Dark Nights and Rebecca Zanetti for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

I have not read any of the previous books and had no problems with keeping up with all the characters and plot.
Ms. Zanetti gives info background info so new reads aren’t feeling like something is missing.
I really adorned Athan. I could feel his sophistication, in his speech and mannerisms.
I’m so happy the author didn’t have him go with the time period that he was currently living in.
It gave him more authenticity. And an old world feel to him.
I appreciated how protective of Ivy he was. Always put her safety and feelings first.
I liked Ivy in the beginning She was sweet and naive. An unimportant child to a father who was selfish and unkind.
When she is changed to an immortal, she starts finding her place and value in life.
But I felt she persona and personality changed in good ways and a lot of bad ways.
This is where I found her to be a brat and unkind. She was reckless and took no heed to her mates warning of the dangers lurking.
As far as the romance between her and Athan I just didn’t feel it.
Their mating was fate dedicated it. Their few get togethers per year was out of necessity not desire.
I just didn’t feel any passion and lust with them.
I did enjoy the story. It’s fast paced and a fun read.

Due to a family curse, Athan Maxwell must find his one true mate to stay alive, even as an immortal. When he does, he also saves the lovely Ivy O’Dwyer from a certain death from typhus fever.. For more than one hundred years, Athan has kept his distance, only meeting Ivy a few times a year to share blood to keep them both healthy, but all of that is about to change.

Ivy has learned to enjoy her independence, even working with another Maxwell mate to help take down pedophilia rings. But, everything is about to change as danger, Ivy isn’t even aware of, is lurking and Athan decides it’s time to fully claim Ivy as his.

There is so much heat and chemistry between Ivy and Athan and it has been building for over a century, so it only makes sense that this couple explodes right off of the page when they finally come together to complete their mating. There is a lot to take in with this novella, and I only wish it had been longer to get more of the backstory . . . because, I want more of these characters and their history and future! The novella length while giving a complete and entrancing story, just doesn't do them justice. 4 stars.

Delicious Vampire Novella!!

Athan is a centuries old vampire. As a Maxwell he must find and take his fated mate, and drink her blood at least annually. Found in the late 1800’s Ivy went from a poor farmer’s daughter to an immortal - seeing Athan once a year. She has become CEO of her own company in current times.

We revisit her as she is providing a funeral for the “old” Ivy and beginning a new chapter. As she is ageless, she must create a persona that “ages”. She is frustrated at still being a virgin. She cannot touch another male, as a painful rash is the result. She ultimately confronts Athan as to why they do not have a “real” relationship”. As her turning was not really her choice, Athan has been waiting for just this moment; Ivy does not fear him, and is making demands - ones he is more than willing to fulfill.

A shift in the immortal world creates imminent danger - so Ivy loses her “freedom” of movement.

Exciting, romantic, steamy and magical - a terrific mix.

Could have been better

I love the Dark Protectors Series, and there are so many characters she could have used to continue the series so I don’t quite understand adding a whole new clan of people, but with that said I liked the Maxwell’s. What I didn’t like was their idiotic females. I mean come on, is it to much to ask to write a female character with a couple brain cells? Ivy repeatedly put herself in harms way even though she was told it was dangerous. Even after she was shot at and given information about the war going on she still chose to go off on her own because she had an important job to do and wanted to be “independent”. What she was, was plain dumb. Ms. Zanetti’s female characters have never been overly strong except for the odd few, but they all have some redeeming qualities. But I know this going in, I don’t expect a strong female lead. I’ll read Kresley Cole’s Immortals After Dark if I want a kick ass female character. But this just insulted my intelligence. Sorry , I love this series and this book was a huge let down.

The newest Dark Protectors/Rebels novella from Rebecca Zanetti is perfection in written form! I couldn't stop reading this book once I started because it consumed my thoughts even when I put it down that it didn't take me long to scoop it right back up and continue where I left off!

Athan is a too sexy immortal hero that had my heart feeling good and the butterflies swarming dramatically in my stomach while Ivy's boldness after a century since Athan saved her won me over 110%! She went from a soft, almost gentle and submissive woman to a fierce warrior who stops predators from preying on young girls. And the way that sparks fly when Athan finally comes around to claim her was amazing and sensual and was sure a heck of a lot of fun. Plus, the incredible action and danger mixed with the romance made this one of my favorite reads so far of 2023! I can't wait to read it again!

This definitely gets 5 stars for heat and 5 more for sweetness.

WOW!!! Athan has his hands full with Ivy. He saved Ivy from typhus by mating her and left her alone as long as she would feed him when necessary. Or at least that is what she thought.

Ivy has teamed up with Leah, Athan's sister-in-law. If there is trouble around, it will find them. Together they keep fleeing from the brothers. They are working together to rid the world of creeps. Then it all goes too far.

Athan wants he mate. Athan wants to be fully mated realizing their arrangement isn't working. The question is will he be able to convince Ivy to complete the bond and will she stick around.

Vampire's Kiss is filled with shocking moments. I just didn't know what trouble Ivy would get into next. Vampire's kiss is a slow build to real love. There is a lot of tension between Athan and Ivy. No one ever taught them that communication is important.

i can only hope we will have more of the Maxwells. They are an interesting bunch.

This was my first foray into this series and I believe I am hooked! I’ve read this author’s romantic suspense novels and been a big fan, but I hadn’t yet delved into her Dark Protectors series. When I got the opportunity to review this novella, I jumped in with both feet. As one of the 1001 Dark Nights novellas, it is short by definition, but definitely long enough to get a good taste and introduction into this world Ms. Zanetti has created. She truly whet my appetite, just as these books are intended to do. I enjoyed the story of this couple as the heroine evolved from a naive, biddable girl to a strong, confident, independent woman. I loved that this alpha-hero is brought up short when he realizes that giving the heroine the time to come into herself means that she is no longer willing to just do as she is told. This is just the kind of pleasure read I adore! I had no trouble understanding the gist of this paranormal world despite not reading from the series beginning, but you better believe I’m going back to the start now. I definitely give this a thumbs up. If you enjoy paranormal romantic suspense then I would definitely recommend that you give this a read. I am voluntarily submitting this review after reading an advanced complementary copy of this book.

Hmmm I wasn't real sure about this read. Athan more or less paid to save Ivy's life and a promise I guess to save her father's farm. So I guess Grams found his mate but also knew she was dying. It was a little bit convoluted but from what I surmised Athan partially mated with Ivy to save her and then gave her her freedom to live her life with the one stipulation they meet twice a year because of his need for her blood to stay alive. Okay all well and good and it seemed to be working. But I think Ivy was on her own too long and I get they never completed the mating but she just seemed selfish and Leah most definitely was. OMG they had the guys right where they wanted them and could let them die. Didn't like that. Plus I was shocked Ivy brought up the fact that she knew about the virus that could negate a mating knowing damn straight it would kill Athan. Yeah it ended okay but honestly I don't like Ivy. I guess I have to wait to form an opinion on Leah with the next book.

This book may have been a short one, but as they say…small but mighty! There was a whole lotta fun, excitement, danger, love, sexy times and everything in between packed into the pages of this novella! I ENJOYED IT IMMENSELY!

From beginning to end, it was exciting…I couldn’t put it down! Athan saves Ivy’s life, thinking they’ll just meet up a couple of times a year for a blood exchange and he’ll just let her live her life the way she wants to. Foolish, foolish man! Of course that doesn’t work after a few hundred years and he finds her more fascinating every time they meet up.

But when she’s in danger…the fangs come out and he goes after the ones threatening (and trying to kill!) his mate!

Ivy is ticked when she finds out he’s been “watching” her all along and then all bets are off. The interaction between Athan and Ivy is so fun to read! Loved, loved, LOVED this book!

Can't get enough of the Dark Protectors

Short but sweet. Ivy was dying until Athan showed up and mated her. As a vampire he made her immortal but he never fully completed the mating with sex. Over the years he gave her as much independence as possible but in order to live he needed her blood. In the beginning they met up twice a year and then increased it to four times a year. Slowly both were getting weaker and he knew the time was close when they would have to fully mate. Ivy is a handful and gives him a run for his money until the moment they both want to have sex. Passion wins out and both realize how much they love each other. This is one of my favorite series and I devour each new book when it's released.

Athan found his fated mate 150 years ago, just in the nick of time. Ivy, a poor farmer’s daughter, was moments from succumbing to typhus and accepted Athan’s brand to save her life.

“Death or marriage” isn’t a romantic proposal, so Athan has been trying very hard to behave like an honourable vampire-demon and give Ivy the freedom to make her own choices and find herself. But is Ivy truly free? She’s tired of being the world’s oldest virgin. Maybe she should ask the Queen about that new virus that negates matings, so she can find herself a mate who will perform husbandly duties?

Athan is done with waiting. So is Ivy. Let the sparks fly! Rebecca Zanetti delivers another incinerating and inevitable collision of lovers that is snack-sized yet keeps all the necessary flavour.
