You better watch your back. You better do your best to hide. Because at Whitehorn there are strange forces at play. Someone or something is watching. And the bizarre death within a secured room is only the beginning...
Within a short period of time FBI agent Blake Wilder has had to overcome many life altering events. From the relief of discovering the truth of her past and having the reunion she had always dreamed of. To becoming suffocated by the feelings of grief and failure, feelings that nearly resulted in her death. Safe to say, Blake Wilder is far from looking forward to the festivities to come.
Blake and her team are summoned to a small town in northern Washington to investigate the mysterious death of a patient at Whitehorn. A case with no prints and no evidence that anyone had entered the victim’s room the night of her death. A strangely perplexing and unfathomable death. And the patients and staff at Whitehorn believe that it was the spirit of the woman’s boyfriend—a man she’d killed—coming back from the grave to have his revenge.
When Blake discovers that the victim is not what she appears to be and the case takes a more shocking turn. Blake finds herself in an inescapable fight, a fight of the ghosts of the girl’s past and Blake’s very own ghosts of present and future to come.
You better watch out. You better hide. Because a night at The Asylum could bring forth a darkness that may lead to an untimely demise.
Elle Gray lives in a small town with her 2 cats, and her handsome husky. As a girl, she was obsessed with crime novels and thrillers.
Today, she loves writing and creating thrilling novels with courageous, strong heroes/heroines and dangerous psychopaths. She invites you to join her exciting world of detectives and FBI agents that take down killers and kick butt.
This was a good read, but not a great read. It really felt like an episode from a TV cop show. The characters were like able and I might have been more connected if I had started at the first in the series.
I’m committed to the series. However I’m becoming annoyed with the the poor editing and repetitive use of words such as a “Warren” of hallways. And “due diligence” Will it keep me from finishing the series? No. Will it annoy me ? Yes!
I’m really enjoying the series overall, but this book was my least favorite. 🙃 There was a lot happening, and it was tough to keep track of everything.
I like the series, like Elle's plotting, always intricate and well thought out. There are several things though, that others seem to like, that I do not and which I find off putting.
Blake should NEVER be supervising anyone. She's a talented agent, but she thinks sexual harassment is funny and encourages it in her team. No supervisor ever would last long using the methods she does. That's not allowed anywhere, let alone in the FBI. She uses, nearly word for word, Trump's old story about being able to stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue (assume she means NY, though the series is set in Seattle) and shoot someone without consequence.
She's a loose cannon. No law enforcement officer anywhere charges into danger alone, without backup, more often than she does. That will get one killed, but she does it in every book. She has a CI who she thinks is just a great guy and thinks deserves a second chance - to rehabilitate his image now that he is in his 50's. Fish, who trafficked in guns, drugs AND women. I'll give him his second chance after he finishes his life sentence. People who traffic in women are beyond disgusting, yet this "super" agent thinks all that is just fine as long as he gives her information she can use. In this book, she actually condones and participates in a brutal physical interrogation by criminals to get what she wants. She'd be fired by any legitimate law enforcement agency for what she did here.
I love the writing, I love the stories, I'd like to see the Thirteen get what's coming to them, hopefully we will at some point, but I really wish Elle would clean up the details - Blake may be a wunderkind agent but she doesn't keep her superiors informed, she allows, encourages a disrespectful, hostile workplace and she uses extra legal methods to get what she wants. This is not what America needs in law enforcement and the real FBI would never tolerate it. The books would be so much better if Elle just made them more realistic, less about Blake's inner thoughts - I mean, I am SO over her lack of love life, a choice she made, but is constantly interrupting the flow of the story with pointless yearnings, do or don't do, just quit thinking about it on our dime. Astra is so out of line in her endless disrespect and pushing at Blake to just get over the fact that an organization implanted a man in her life who completely fooled her and nearly got her killed. Astra, the former wild child, because SHE settled down, now thinks Blake MUST too and never lets up on that idea. And she is a horrible coworker, that isn't camaraderie, it is hostility. In this book, Elle even has Rick saying things like "keep your shorts on" to his BOSS. No one talks to a superior officer the way she encourages her staff to do. Not in any real workplace. I'll grant novels and screen plays do play fast and loose with workplace dynamics but they create such an unrealistic view of the American workforce that the entire world despises us because they think what they see and read IS how America is and it's not, except in the imaginations of some writers. Two stars even though I enjoyed the read, I've just had my fill of the lack of realism in the characters, the work place, the abusive policing. So, has America, though so many writers do not seem to have noticed how much the nation has changed when turning a critical eye on how policing is done. Rant over. I hope she continues to write and cleans up her work, because I am interested in how this turns out for both Blake and her sister. Realistically.
I enjoy the author provides the reader with a look into the characters' heads, and the series of plot twists. I get tripped up on things such as, "between the three of them", when " among" is correct, when referring to more than two.
Guess I expected more action. The characters were interesting and her interrogations development was fun. Surprising how many people were on the take and corrupt.
I’ve read 6 of the Blake Wilder books. Easy to read and I know the characters now. Why only two FBI agents and latterly only one in this very big and complex case.
I was going to give this book a solid four stars, but then I changed my mind as the story progressed. The writing was fairly solid, although there were a few places where more editing could have helped. "Even still though" is a bit of awkward wording, for example.
The town they travel to is first described as a little off the beaten track, the kind where everyone knows each other. They can't find a quality hotel when they first arrive. Then we find out that it has an international port, and an enclave of the Ukrainian mafia. Maybe I got towns mixed up, because I starting skimming a little under half way through. I thought they were both Woodcreek, though. Then I figured out the big twist as to why the victim was so sure she was haunted by her dead boyfriend, which was a big reason why I decided to stop a little over half way through. I admit I did skip to the end to double check if my guess was right, and it was.
I understand Blake as a person, and not just a detective, is a big part of this series. It revolves around her. However, I got tired of reading in such length Blake's ruminating about how her relationship with the last man in her life, as well as other traumatic life experiences, have left her distrustful and doubting herself. It seemed in every second chapter or so, we'd have paragraphs of Blake second guessing herself, wondering if things would ever get better. We got the point about the third or fourth time.
The banter among Blake and her co-workers got to be a bit much. Not only did it really skirt the line of professionalism, not everybody talks like that in real life. It also dragged conversations out. Not every conversation comes straight to the point, but after while it seemed as though all the office conversations had to have at least two or three lines of banter before getting to the investigative discussion.
I thought it weird that putting cream and sugar in one's coffee is described as "dressing" it. Maybe it's a normal term in the land of Starbucks, but it didn't have to be used more than once, I thought.
Lastly, I was partially drawn to this book because of the title, and the spooky sounding lines in the official description. I knew it wasn't going to have actual ghosts, as I'd read a previous book from this series. But the way the book was presented made it seem, to me, as though there were be a fews thrills and chills. Maybe it's just me.

This was an intriguing, suspenseful, and complex story that had many unexpected twists and turns. What started out as a murder investigation quickly became so much more, which seems to be the case with SSA Wilder and her awesome team. I would definitely recommend this book, series, and outstanding author.
At the end of book #7, there was a bit of information regarding SSA Wilder's friend Pax Arrington. I'm assuming since there was nothing else mentioned about it in the next two books that the story continued in the Pax Arrington series. There has been nothing to indicate that these two series are connected, or that they should be read in a certain order. However, after a brief discussion in this story, it seems that there were some changes in Pax's life. I'm wondering if it would have been better to read these two series in the order that they were released, instead of reading them separately? Just a thought!
This book is number 9. I think I finished it 2 days ago. This writer is amazing. I am totally enjoying her books. Yes, I do devour each one. I read pretty much until the book is finished or I cannot read another word and am falling asleep. Thank the good Lord, I am retired. Each book is different and yes there are some parts that I tend to slide over as they have been covered sufficiently in one of the previous book(s). But with that being said, grab on to your hat, because there is a plot twist coming your way someway here. These books are fun to read, not too horribly disgusting when murder scenes are discussed but I just don't want to quit. I want to know the "who done it' and the why.
Elle Gray has managed to write another winner in "Night at the Asylum (Blake Wilder FBI Mystery Thriller Book 9)! In this book, Blake takes on seemingly the entirety of the bad guy clubs of the whole world including the Odessa Mafia and Triads amongst others! And (SPOILER ALERT), she comes out pretty banged up, but alive. She made a promise or two to Astra and we will see how well she is able to trust, as far as relationships go as well. Great thriller/mystery! Thoroughly enjoyed this book! Will be reading the rest of the books in the series for sure!
The book got a little frustrating and long but as usual it ended with a bang. So my question is this. How much more physical wear and tear are you going to allow Blake to have. She's pretty strong but human nonetheless, there is a limit. And after what that poor sheriff went through I'm not surprised if you continue their relationship to another book. And Charles, I truly hope you make him strong enough for her. I'm enjoying this series but it is a bit intense and over the top, kind of reminds me of that movie Die Hard. Looking forward to the next book.
When Agent Blake wilder and her team are assigned to find out what actually happened to a patient at Whitehorn mental hospital in Northern Washington they had no idea what it was going to lead to. As Blake and her fellow Agent Astra start the investigation they are finding things aren't as they seem. The more they investigate the death of a patient the clues lead them to ties with a Ukrainian Mafia. The more they investigate it seems they have 2 different cases on their hands and it could lead to them losing their lives.
Sure enjoy reading just how badass a female agent, Blake can be. But it's more than brut force it's about using time, wisdom, reasoning, connections, power of deduction and solving the never ending puzzle. This series shows the camaraderie and partnerships are really what solve the crimes presented. Look forward to the next installment. Hopefully Blake will finally figure out who is behind the remainder of the 13.
A young lady is killed at the asylum and Blake and Ashes are investigating. All they have are suspicions, but nothing seems to be related. The action starts. There are gun fights, questions, and things change direction. Blake doubts herself and goes further than she should. It's all there in the book. I enjoy this this author and this series. I recommend this book and believe you will like it.
Another great book by Elle Gray. I love the way that Elle has woven in excitment, worry, mystery and fear together to make Blaake and her team have another adventure. This story has them facing more direct contact with the shady side of doing investigating.also a warning coming about Blake and her siter Kim. Someeone wants them dead. Thia is a really great series to read. I am hooked.
Night at the Asylum is another great read in the Blake Wilder series. I really enjoy Ms. Gray’s writing and her imagination. It’s good stuff because it’s believable. Blake, Astra and the rest of the characters are very relatable. Though I’m not an FBI agent and know if they’re on point, they fit the image I have of them in my mind. I’m off to read #10, don’t bother me ;)
## Marvelous. I really like Blake. She's smart, capable, and sarcastic. She's a great investigator, she can fight, she can shoot. Basically she's a bada$$. This installment was interesting and full of plot twists. Many I didn't see coming. It kept me turning the pages well into the night. I love the banter between the team mates and hope there'll be more of her new relationship with Charles. Well done.
This story became a challenge for Blake as it went beyond just the murder of a young woman. The attempted murder of the two, trying to get support from other agencies and finding that the criminals were active in the community led to a lot of theories to work through. Blake solved a number of problems before discovering who murdered the young woman. Enjoyed reading this book.
Im reading Blake Wilder FBI mystery series back to back. This one, #9 is quite different inasmuch it's not all The Thirteen and included the Triad, Odessa mafia , etc. I can stop reading this series. Reading one book every 2 or 3 days. Read 4 last week. I believe the series is in the 20+ book. Glad this journey with Blake, Astra, Mo and Rick is just beginning. Oh, and Rosie. Fish, Benjamin, Charles, Paxton and Mosey. Keep writing them!
When you start noticing typos and errors yourself. wrong chapter name is a big one. nearly went on the wrong chapter because of a typo. oh well. like everyone else i didnt enjoy her beating herself up on what she didnt do right for most of the book. I had to skip a few pages because i found the downing herself depressing. The rest of the story was okay but not brilliant. Not her best book in the series.
I loved this book! It had all the hallmark bits I love in a thriller - spooky small town vibes where the townspeople automatically hate “outsiders”, a creepy asylum with a terrible past and a death everyone seems hellbent on covering up. I really liked the ending as well! I was surprised at the turn it took, and was shocked who the murderer turned out to be! I think Gray is turning up the heat and refining her writing with each Blake Wilder book!
This one really drives Blake in circles. Nothing makes sense to her or Astra, especially the three goons who try to kill them. Why was Maddy murdered and why did she see ghosts? What does the U S Attorney have to do with it? And the Science Director running the asylum? It’s a real confusing riddle. A great read.
Elle Gray is a master storyteller and this Blake Wilder FBI Mystery Thriller Book series just shows off those skills. In Night at the Asylum (book 9), Blake and her team try find who murdered a hidden asset placed in an asylum. The whirlwind story is complicated and twisted, with lots of dead ends. I guessed the ending, but will you?!
I have to tell you this is the best Blake Wilder FBI Mystery Thriller yet! Don't get me wrong.. I love them all! Also Pax Arrington.. (I'm hoping for more) But anyway back to Blake.. Totally awesome book... I couldn't put it down. Thank you Elle! Please keep them coming.. 😎
This book in the series had a faster pace than the last book, which I appreciated. The plot took several unexpected turns and kept me guessing for awhile. The only reason I didn’t give it a 5 is because I felt there was too much character development with unimportant characters or to much recap of characters for.p my taste.
I have really enjoyed the Blake FBI series and would love if you could continue this series. For now I will read your other books while I wait for the continuation of Blake Wilder thrillers. I would recommend this series to all those readers that love thrillers and mostly because you do not know how it will end.
A woman is strangled in her locked room at a mental hospital. Added to that the death certificate says it was a suicide. Blake's team is directed to follow up so Astra and Blake travel to a town near the hospital. No good leads but many leads to other cases make this an interesting read.
I continue to enjoy the elaborate crime mysteries that Blake always seems to stumble upon. But the whole thing with the Thirteen is getting old. I think the author can close that part with a happy ending as the characters deserve and still have a way to continue this series. I'm just glad I'm caught up as I did not realize how many book there were when I stumbled onto the first one.
