The great Gingerbread Dog & Cat House competition has come to Wagtail, along with another murder to solve for Holly and her supersmart Jack Russell terrier Trixie in the New York Times bestselling Paws & Claws series by Krista Davis!
Visitors are arriving in droves to spend Thanksgiving in the mountains of pet-friendly Wagtail, Virginia. Many of them are bringing dog and cat gingerbread houses to enter in the contest that will be held in the new convention center. Wagtail resident Orly Biffle bequeathed the land to the town in his will, provided that they not cut down the grand old oak tree on the property. Orly's children are mighty miffed that they didn't inherit the prime piece of property overlooking the lake.
Holly notices that Trixie and Twinkletoes, her calico kitty, are fixated on the big oak tree. Trixie barks at it as though she thinks it's a corpse! Just as contestants are spicing up their sweet gingerbread creations, the majestic tree drops an enormous limb. The mayor declares that the tree is dangerous and must come down. When a bulldozer churns up some roots, the tree falls over on its own accord revealing a body inside the trunk! Initially, everyone suspects this unsavory trick was Orly's doing. But it soon becomes clear that someone is trying to keep the truth under wraps. Trixie and Twinkletoes now have to help Holly sniff out some suspects and leash a conniving killer.
Krista Davis lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia where she writes mysteries. She lived in Northern Virginia for many years and resided for a time in Old Town Alexandria where her Domestic Diva Mysteries take place.
Krista also writes the Paws and Claws Mysteries, which debuted with MURDER, SHE BARKED. Her Pen & Ink Mysteries featured covers that can be colored! Read the book and have fun coloring the cover.
I would love to visit the pet-centric fictional town in Virginia that this series is set in. Krista Davis writes a read cozy mystery and this one did not change my mind on that. I love Holly as a sleuth and I especially love that her dog Trixie has a few snippets helping other pets on how to help solve murders. I thought this one was a lot of fun with some good twists in it. Holly is showing her mother the new convention center when a giant tree branch falls from a dying tree. It’s clear the tree needs to come down, but the land the convention center is on was donated with the provision that this particular tree never is taken down. After consulting with attorneys Holly’s grandmother, the mayor, determines safety has to come first. And everyone is shocked to find the tree is full of cement and a dead body. As Holly collects residents’ guesses of what missing people could be the body in the tree and investigates the most likely suspects her mother is looking for a home to move herself and her parents back to Wagtail! I really liked the way this one tied everything all together in the end.
There is always something fun happening in Wagtail, Virginia, the idyllic fictional town that caters to visitors and their pets.
For Thanksgiving, the Great Gingerbread Dog and Cat House has come to town and the Sugar Maple Inn has a full house. Holly, Oma Liesel, Zelda, Mr. Huckle, Gingersnap, Twinkletoes, and Trixie are thrilled to welcome everyone. They are surprised that Holly’s mom has come for a visit but have no trouble finding a place for her to stay.
The competition is taking place at the new convention center. The land for the center was bequeathed to Wagtail will only one stipulation. They can’t cut down the big oak tree on the property. His children are hoping they will break the clause by cutting down the tree and then the property would revert to them. But it seems that big old tree was ready to go. First, it loses a large limb which has Trixie and Twinkletoes dancing around like there is a body in the tree. Then, when the roots are loosened, it falls over all on its own revealing a pair of shoes presumably attached to a body. Those animals are rarely wrong.
Assuming that is why Orly didn’t want the tree removed, they now have to figure out who is buried in the trunk and who was involved in putting them there. Holly steps right up to help Officer Dave solve the mysteries.
I love this series! Holly, Oma Liesel, Zelda, Mr. Huckle, Gingersnap, Twinkletoes, and Trixie are like old friends that I am always delighted to visit. They are genuine and have huge hearts. They love welcoming new people to town and always try to see the good in people. I love that the pets play a huge role in each story. This time Trixie really gets to shine with A Guide to Murder told from her point of view. After all the bodies she has found she is definitely an expert on the subject.
In addition to the body in the tree, there is another murder later in the story. Are these deaths connected? Are there two killers walking around Wagtail? There are also some surprising twists that really kept this reader totally engaged. I loved following along with Holly as she worked through the list of missing persons that could be the corpse in the tree. It really was a complex mystery with a lot of details to work through. I was kept guessing until the very end.
I always look forward to the food prepared at the Inn and other restaurants for humans, canines, and felines and that several recipes are included at the end of the book.
A Good Dog’s Guide to Murder is a wonderful cozy mystery for the holiday season. The gingerbread competition, the Thanksgiving meal, the Christkindl Market, and decorating for Christmas all together with a mystery that is so well-plotted and written is a real treat to read.
While the murder mysteries are wrapped up by the end of the story, Ms. Davis adds a little surprise at the end of the story, and it seems there are some interesting times ahead for my friends in Wagtail. All have me very excited for Book #9.
It's Thanksgiving time in Wagtail, VA and the inn is full of contestants for the gingerbread house contest at the new convention center. While walking over they hear this loud boom so go in search of what it was. A huge tree branch has falling off a tree that was in the will of the man that left the property to the town on the condition that the tree not be cut down under any condition.
It's quite the mystery with quite a few twists to keep you turning the pages. Trixie the dog and Twinkletoes the cat are fun pets and helpful to Holly from the inn and Dave the policeman in solving the crimes, old and new. I will be adding this series to my growing TBR.
A GOOD DOG’S GUIDE TO MURDER is the eighth book in the Paws & Claws Mystery series by Krista Davis. This adorable pet-themed cozy mystery hits the mark for cuteness, a clever plot, and loveable characters, be they human or four-legged friends. Set in the delightful town of Wagtail, Virginia (oh how I wish it were an actual location!) protagonist Holly and her grandmother, Liesel, are co-owners of the Sugar Maple Inn. It’s Thanksgiving time and the town is bustling with activities, including a pet-themed gingerbread house competition, which keeps the pair hopping. The holiday festivities are going perfectly when a body encased in concrete is found in a dying tree at the competition site. Is the body someone local, or could it be a drifter who’d met their demise? Holly and her dog, Trixie, are pulled into the intrigue and I appreciate Holly is a gentle interviewer, asking questions and listening to gossip to find answers. The story effortlessly flows between the fun events, the visitors, the locals, and the cold case murder mystery. Unique to this book, beginning each chapter, are several paragraphs from “Trixie’s Guide to Murder”. Told from Holly’s dog’s perspective on how to find bodies and then help your human solve the murder, the addition is quite charming and informative. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well-thought out cozy mystery with enjoyable and memorable characters!
I was provided with an advance copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I had so much fun catching up with my friends in Wagtail. Imagine a town dedicated to your four legged friends. Holly is a fun character and it was so much fun to have her mom be such a big part of the story. I'm looking forward to reading the next book. #AGoodDogsGuidetoMurder #NetGalley
Can I do more than 5 stars?? I love cozies by Krista Davis, she is definitely one of the best! This book was so fun, and as usual I did not want to put it down. There was a lot going on in Wagtail; a gingerbread contest, a body in a tree from 20 years ago (which twinkletoes found), Holly's mom in town unexpectedly... I love when there are stories alongside the main murder. I have grown to love these characters and I cannot wait to see what's next for Holly!!
I always enjoy a mystery at the Sugar Maple Inn, but I did not care for the addition of sections from Trixie’s perspective, particularly using cutsie words that grated on me. I understand that the titles of the books are references to popular books (in this case, Holly Jackson’s YA novel), but I didn’t actually want the dog’s guide— the name was enough.
The mystery kept me intrigued, more so as more people became entwined, but I found the reveal to be clunky, especially given how well Davis usually writes them.
Still an enjoyable read but not the best of the series.
A Good Dog's Guide to Murder by Krista Davis follows Holly as she tries to maintain her inn while the holiday season starts in Wagtail, Virginia. When a dead man is found inside the trunk of a dead tree and then people start getting poisoned, Holly must figure out what is going on before she becomes a victim herself. Not only that, but her mother is in town and it turns out that she needs a house and likes to solve murders too.
This book was really fun! I thought the mystery was tough enough to be really enjoyable and I liked the addition of Holly's mom to the cast. I did think that the write ups as Trixie, the dog, were a little cheesy but other than that it was a pleasant cozy mystery to enjoy for a relaxing read. I do think that you need to have read at least some of the series to not feel lost, but I would recommend it to anyone who likes cozy mysteries.
I love visiting Wagtail! The main character, Holly is so likable. I love the residents of Wagtail, too. Oma, Dave, Holmes all of the Inn staff and the townspeople. This time around Holly’s Mom is in town and their relationship is so sweet. The mystery is a 20 year old cold case that no one even knew was there. We also get little clips with Trixie’s tips on training “your peoples” to catching a killer. I loved seeing Trixie’s viewpoint. This is set at Thanksgiving moving into preparing Wagtail for Christmas and the Christkindlemarket. A joy to read and I can only hope there will be mor book in the Paws and Claws mystery series.
It has been a while since I've read a book in the series, so it was good to come back to it. I like how the dog is trying to help but the humans don't always get it. It would be nice to visit such a pet-centric town.
Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for my eARC in exchange for an honest review. - I do need to go back and read the books I've missed.
Starting out the book is hints to teaching your peoples to solve a murder by Trixie! I loved this addition to the book - there were Trixie tips peppered throughout.
Holly's mom comes for a visit and decides to move back to Wagtail (she grew up there); she is going to make a great addition to the Wagtail family. I'm curious to see if Officer Dave and Shelley actually have something going on already or if they will in the future - adorable looks and blushing can only go so far!
This murder was unique because the murder took place at least 20 years earlier and the victim was found in cement inside a tree - yes, you read that right - A TREE! There was speculation of who the victim could be and it turns out to be, in my opinion, a sad ending. Let's just say, if they killer would have ended with the victim in the tree, they may not have made things so bad for themselves in the end.
I would love to go on vacation to Wagtail and take my pets with me. The town is charming and sounds like it has a lot of stuff to do (besides solving murders). This mystery was well paced and had enough twists and turns to keep you guessing until the very end. I loved the addition of Holly's mom, Nell, to the story but my favorite part was Trixie's guide to investigating (and I'm not a fan of talking animals but she doesn't really talk to anyone so it's OK). Nell's arrival adds a new cast of characters to the town so it doesn't feel so small anymore. Looking forward to the next.
A Good Dog's Guide to Murder by Krista Davis is the eighth book in the Paws & Claws Mystery series. What an excellent whodunit! Wagtail, Virginia is a pet friendly vacation destination for pet owners. Special regulations have been set up to allow pets in restaurants and all the shops in town. The restaurants even have special pet menus which feature meals similar to the human meals on the menu. Sugar Maple Inn has been renovated to become a pet friendly resort. Amateur sleuth Holly Miller co-owns the inn with her grandmother. Holly has successfully helped solve murders in the previous books in the series. I really enjoyed the segments, Trixie's Guide to Murder. A fun addition to the story.
This storyline is complex and filled with mysteries to solve. The characters are so much fun, especially Holly's, dog Trixie and cat Twinkletoes. There is a surprise at the end of the book that I loved. I look forward to the next book in the series.
I loved my return to Wagtail in this Thanksgiving time mystery. There was an extra twist in this one because it's unclear who the victim is, what happened or even when. That made it even more difficult to guess the murderer, but more fun to piece everything together with Holly. I so love being back in Wagtail and am always so impressed by how pet friendly it is and imagining a town surrounded by furry companions (even at dinner, which is adorable). I loved the tidbits written by Trixie the doggo about helping your human find and solve a murder! There were festive touches such as a gingerbread contest, Thanksgiving meal, and decorating for Christmas that made it the perfect fall read. There were some especially sad parts that had me feeling so sympathetic and worried at the same time (no spoilers). This book kept me guessing with so many surprises and I loved the ending! I can't wait to return to Wagtail again.
I love this series. Trixie is one of my favorite characters so this was fun to read sections from Trixie’s point of view of discovering bodies. The mystery is full of surprises to keep you guessing. I recommend this to cozy mystery fans and fans of fur babies.
Another Paws and Claws Mystery that you just can't put down. To bad Wagtail isn't a really place sounds like a great little place to live. Thanks Krista Davis for another great read.
I absolutely loved this book! From Trixie and Twinkletoes' mischief at the gingerbread contest to Twinkletoes' assistance with the showdown, it was everything I've come to love in a cozy AND about the town of Wagtail itself. It always makes me wish it was real and I could visit there with my dog!
There was an old murder case to solve but it wasn't long before another new one popped up as well as attempts on a few people's lives. It had everyone including Officer Dave wondering who the heck this crazy killer was, and did all these present day shenanigans have anything to do with the body in the tree?
I really like Holly's mom and the fact that the two of them get along great together. She seemed interested in moving to Wagtail, so it should be fun for Holly to have her around--as long as she doesn't bug her too much about hurrying up and giving her some grandbabies! ;) Nina did seem pretty happy with her furry grandkids for the moment.
Speaking of grandbabies, the sweetest couple in town (aside from Holmes and Holly) got the best surprise. I'm not gonna say a word about what it was, but I thought it was so darn awesome with how things turned out for their little family. And what better time for something good to happen for a family than at Christmas.
The body in the tree did get some closure as well as someone was caught for the present day murder. I can't wait to see what my fave characters get into in the next book! Always such a fun visit that I never want to come home from!
I couldn't possibly leave out the cute excerpts written from Trixie's viewpoint, hence the guidebook to murder reference. She has a few paragraphs every several chapters or so and it's just cute and hilarious how she lets her fellow pets in on all her expert tracking secrets. After eight murder adventures, I'd say Trixie's pretty well qualified to write a little guide like that! Even Officer Dave admits her corpse-sniffing nose works like nothing else. It's not always corpses though. She can detect pretty much any trouble.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book provided by Berkley Publishing via NetGalley, and my opinions are my own.
So cute! I love this series set in Wagtail, Virginia, a vacation town that welcomes pets as much as humans. In this novel, Wagtail is hosting a dog and cat gingerbread house competition that’s being held in the new convention center. When a huge branch from the convention center’s oak tree breaks off and a body encased in cement is found inside its trunk, it’s time for Holly, Trixie and Twinkletoes to swing into action. This is a great cozy series to read with a cup of tea in front of the fireplace with a sleeping dog or cat on your lap.
Another fun trip to Wagtail, we have Thanksgiving leading to Christmas, all kinds of sweet cats and dogs, a gingerbread contest and of course the dead guy in the tree beside the town's new Convention Center. How did he get there, how long has he been in there, who is he??? Come along for a wild ride that only Wagtail can provide!
I found this mystery novel unique in multiple ways.
The storyline, a secondary narrative (or primary if you are a dog,) and it was all tied up for the reader at the end. Unique is my main descriptor for this fine murder mystery.
Ms. Davis, the author, just never disappoints! Now I’m eager for her next release.
Quirky but cute cozy murder mystery about a body found packed in cement in the center of a huge, dead and decaying tree. Part of the story is told from the perspective of the main character's dog, Trixie. A little too precious for me, personally, but many other readers seem to enjoy it Quite a unique premise.
This book was really good! The eighth in the Paws and Claws Mystery series by Krista Davis, this book was well written and well paced, entertaining and incredibly hard to put down. Very well worth the time to read.
I always enjoy a visit to Wagtail, but this one had so many characters I had a hard time keeping track of who everybody was and their relationship to the victim. Too any suspects—not enough details to tell them apart. I also didn't care for the chapters written from the "doggum's" point of view. Not my favorite in the series, but I'll still keep reading.
