A Cereusly Wonderful Read. What can I say about Dead Cereus and author Kira Seamon that hasn't already been said by countless professional book reviewers? How about how honored I am to be able to have read this tale before it was released to the public for starters. If you are looking for a book that truly, has it all, then look no further. Dead Cereus is a cozy mystery, it is an epic romance, and it is hilarious. Not to mention, while you are busy being thoroughly entertained, you just might learn a thing or two about some very interesting subjects. Dead cereus introduced me to a world I knew very little of, the world of exotic plants. Holly, our lovable and often times accident-prone heroine finds herself in the middle of murder mystery. This is juxtaposed by the infectious romance our lead character shares with the charismatic, William. Together the couple exudes a sweet spontaneous type of relationship that we all have dreamt of. Balance all this with the refreshing hilarious prose that Seamon delivers so effortlessly, and you have yourself a winning recipe for success. Speaking of recipes, this book is full of tasty morsels that will leave your mouth watering and your soul craving for more. If this is how Kira Seamon's career as an author begins, then I cannot wait to see how it develops. Dead Cereus, is Cereusly Awesome.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy from the Author. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.Dead Cereus by Kira Seamon is about this young college junior who is on a scholarship and trying to keep from being expelled. A murderer kills the chocolatier and kidnaps Holly's new friend. Will Holly catch this person? The Story Holly Jackson is a college junior, and she's at the prestigious Shellesby College on scholarship while working at the greenhouses. Those greenhouses have a lot more than plants growing in them. Holly is in the center of almost everything going on at the greenhouses, but she doesn't mean to be. She also happens to be dating an older guy named William. I don't know where Holly finds the time to attend classes and work in the greenhouses and cook.
A lot happens within a short period for Holly that she gets suspended and has to figure out how to move within the grounds of that suspension. The chocolatier gets killed before the suspension, and she has to figure out how to help the police catch the killer. Holly, as a character, is different, and I don't know if I care about her or not. She is someone that I probably wouldn't be friends with her. Four Stars Dead Cereus by Kira Seamon is definitely a different cozy mystery than what I usually encounter in this genre. Holly is in the role of sleuth but isn't really detecting anything that isn't already known. It's a very confusing story that I'm still trying to wrap my head around. I am giving Dead Cereus by Kira Seamon four stars.
Don't forget to take a look at the recipes in the back. They are Captivating Carrot Cake, Classy Chicken Curry, Genuine Ginger Snap Cookies, Purple Yams, Sassy Sauerkraut, Holly's Radiant Raspberry Muffins, Braised Red Cabbage, Grilled Pacific Rim Tuna, Scintillating Spaetzle, and Holly's World Famous Ratatouille.
Thank you for dropping by! I hope you enjoyed this review of Dead Cereus by Kira Seamon.
Holly Jackson reads in the paper that a body was found in the Providence, Rhode Island, Greenhouse. She had been there herself the previous month for a bonsai workshop. And the special workshops had been given by famous botanist Professor W. Ogletree of the Ogletree Chocolates empire. He was coming to her college that night. She was in danger of losing her scholarship at Shellesby College, currently on probation. So she needs to be at her best.
The college has one of the five top greenhouses in the world. Tonight was a big event. As the rare night-blooming cereus plant will open its petals at Shellesby College's Night Lights Gala, Holly will be there – but so will a killer! At close to midnight, Holly had to go to the greenhouse and lock things up. William had valuable plants there and didn’t want any to turn up missing! Dudley had told her to leave the area, so she would just quietly sneak in. As she approached, the lights suddenly went out in the greenhouse. Who was in there? She saw the emergency exit door was open a crack. It would be her fault if plants were stolen since she had not locked up the greenhouses. So she went through the emergency exit door. She heard voices and hid. The voices of Professor Ogletree and Professor Dudley were arguing about a grafting technique Dudley developed and Ogletree claimed had used it on the cacao plant before Dudley had patented the technique. Dudley lost his job and money because of Ogletree’s actions. When Ogletree tried to leave, Dudley pushed a huge potted palm to block him. Dudley accused him of killing the student in Providence. He said he could prove it, but would take half of Ogletree’s chocolate empire to remain silentl, but instead Ogletree hurled insults at him. Then he grabbed a cannonball fruit and threw it at Ogletree’s head. It was unclear to Holly, watching from her hiding place, whether the unconscious Ogletree was alive or dead. Dudley’s maniacal laughter and words indicated he had killed his rival. He dragged the body to another room while Holly silently followed as she watched the gigantic corpse flower waking up from its years-long slumber and starting to open. Would he truly put the body into the plant? Would he get away with this murder? And what can Holly do now?
Wow, this was an exciting story that was full of surprises. Grab your copy and find out how it all resolves. Holly is stuck in the greenhouse with the murderer. No one knows she is there. Will she be the next victim?

I love Holly, the main character of this book. She is the type of person that seems to find trouble around each corner. I loved her not-too-serious demeanor. She had me smiling and wanting to be her friend. I thought this had a great plot that had some twists I didn't see coming, and I really enjoyed it!
There is also a great addition of recipes in the back of the book! They look delicious, and I want to try them!
I was provided a gifted copy of this book for free. I am leaving my review voluntarily.
Holly Jackson, a scholarship student at Shellesby College, has been entrusted with organizing the Night Lights Ball, which will include a number of renowned botanists as well as donors to the college’s greenhouses. Amidst the father-daughter Berkeley duo, inclined to throw out Holly any chance, at this night ball event Holly must not only save the last thread of her scholarship from snagging but also secure an internship at Boston Botanical College. But will she succeed in evading her tendency to attract trouble this time? Or is she to witness a murder right in front of her eyes, but also to act to prevent another one from occurring?
The author Kira Seamon, who grew up in a greenery infused home in Hawaii, colored the setting of her novel Dead Cereus with diverse greenhouses, an idea she got while visiting Wellesley College in Boston. The enchanting description she gives of botany in her novel seems as natural and explicit as if written while seated in the same place.
Throughout the mystery thriller, the characters reflect human feelings in different ways and emerge as unpredictable at times. There are many delightful botany puns within the witty conversations between William, the admired and brilliant young botanist, and Holly, the impulsive and powerful woman which greatly contributes to the romance thriller. The story turns out to show a significant social transformation in Ivy Berkeley, who transitions from being a stuck cocoon set up by his father and societal norms into a freed butterfly with full wings for flight.
The action-packed story and descriptions of college greenhouse residents, as well as the fresh foods straight from the greenery surrounding the campus do not let the limited setting of the book, in and around the college campus, get in the way. Throughout this enchanting story, readers will enjoy the puns used by the botanists, especially in naming their pets and loved ones.
In a disturbing scene, the author describes a murder which takes place in a greenhouse. The murder, exposed amid the beauty of botany around, gives an upsetting picture, which is both surprising and unusual. By describing the various plants and flowers species in the novel, the author reveals and emphasizes the danger and magnificence of botany while setting the plot in the middle of it. Besides the beautiful illustration of the Cereus flower blooming, there is also a warning of possible fatal damage of plant species.
If you are seeking a humorous romance thriller, or cozy mystery novel, Dead Cereus will herb your enthusiasm with its ardent characters and thrilling plot.
This was quite an interesting book and different from most cozies that I read, but it has all of the characteristics of a cozy such as an amateur sleuth, a mystery to solve, and a small town setting.
Holly is on thin ice with the president of the college and has a tumultuous relationship with his daughter, Ivy. They compete with each other for everything and it doesn't look like a truce is in sight. Not until she shares a special tea with Ivy that changes everything.
At first, I didn't think that this was a cozy because while there is a murder we know who the killer is right off the bat. However, when something happens to Ivy, Holly rushes off to help her and seems to throw caution to the wind and not involve anyone else in her plans. Or she keeps them in the dark, like her boyfriend William. William is on her side but they have an odd relationship. While he will do anything for her and to protect her, sometimes he treats her like a child. Granted, Holly acts like a child a lot of the time and one of my favorite lines is when Williams tells her she is acting like an eight-year-old having a tantrum. This statement is very true and creates an unlikeable character in Holly, but she does have a big heart and wants to help those around her. Despite that, he does love her and they do seem to have a fairytale romance.
The setting is amazing and while I do not have a green thumb, I admire those that do. The descriptions of the plants, the greenhouse, the butterfly garden, and the herb garden were detailed and I enjoyed the fun facts about the various plants and flowers.
We enjoyed this story and the recipes at the end (don't miss those!) and give it 4 paws up.
Dead Cereus is the first book I have read by by Kira Seamon and it will not be the last. I thought this was a good read. The writing style and plot was a little different and unique that took me a little bit to getting used to. Once I caught on, I was hooked. It is not a very look book to read and I had it read in a few hours. I found Holly’s story to be a fun one that was full of action, adventure, romance, mystery and suspense. There were a few twists and turns that I did not expect to see coming. I was often left guessing as to who done it. I loved Holly and William together. They were a fun, delightful and entertaining team. By the time I was half way through the book, I was getting excited to find out what was going to happen next. I just could not put it down from then on.
Dead Cereus will be getting three and a half stars from me. I recommend it for readers who enjoy romantic suspense. I will be interested in reading more by Kira Seamon in the future and am hoping there will be more of Holly’s story to come. I believe that this one is definitely worth a read.
I received a paperback copy of Dead Cereus from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.
I loved this cute mystery! Main characters Holly and William made an adorable couple, accepting each other’s quirks and pushing each other to grow both individually and together. When issues arise, they’re faced with both trust and humor.
And most of those aforementioned issues stem from the chaos that seems to follow Holly. Some of these get downright hilarious. As were her interactions with her nemesis, Ivy.
The setting of this story is gorgeous and so unique! As someone who loves plants but has absolutely no green thumb I truly appreciate the description of the gardens and houses at Shellesby College. This would be a place I would enjoy visiting. And the descriptions of the gala food is just as tantalizing- read this book on an empty stomach at your own peril.
Overall, Dead Cereus is a delightful read. High humor, low angst, and just enough danger and romance to add a bit of spice. Awesome debut book, and I truly hope there is more to come!
This debut novel by author, Kira Seamon is a good read. Dead Cereus has charm and wit. Readers of cozy mysteries will enjoy this book. I read it in just a few hours. The characters are engaging, and I found myself chuckling a few times from the "puns".
Holly and her boyfriend, William make a cute couple. They share the same sense of humor. While, Holly is no Nancy Drew, she does try her best to help solve the murder. A corpse found in a corpse flower is quite the dilemma.
As I was reading this book, I became very hungry with the descriptions of all of the delicious food that was mentioned in this book. As an added bonus, there are recipes at the back of the book for the food featured in this book.
This is a fabulously fun read! We meet Holly who has a tendency to find herself in the middle of chaos and bad things whether she wants to be or not. She is a full time college student who also works in the greenhouses, cooks every chance she gets, and has a heart warming relationship with a slightly older man. She is so busy she made me tired but finds she has to slow down when a murder happens that gets her suspended. In an effort to clear her name she gets involved in the investigation leading us on an enjoyable adventure as she does so. Sure to delight fans of cozy mysteries. I really liked it so I give it 4/5 stars.
I really don't know why I finished this book. I didn't care for Holly at all. I found her a bit dim-witted. She gets herself into all sorts of ridiculous situations. Her boyfriend, William, was overbearing and talked to her like she was a child. He was domineering. IMO, it was absurd that Holly got suspended and William went to her professor and talked him into what her extra credit assignment would be. William had no standing to interfere. I've never heard of anyone being called a Director at a college so I have no idea what Berkeley's position really was. He was apparently in charge of everything and made unilateral decisions based on his dislike of Holly. William and Holly heard a murder occur but never told the police. Holly witnessed a murder and never told the police what she saw. Both murders were just sort of glossed over. Holly's friendship with Ivy didn't ring true knowing they had been enemies for years. Her rescue of Ivy was over-the-top absurd. While some of the information about the greenhouses and the plants was interesting, there was way too much detail. I skimmed a lot of it. Same with the speakers at the reception. More emphasis should have been spent on developing the characters and less on the plants.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I think to read and enjoy this, you'll have to view it from an absurdist lens.
Things I didn't like:
This drew me in with its mystery and comedy and botany aspects, and it has a pretty sweet friendship development, and with a romance aspect that could be very swoonworthy and romantic to some, but was too cloying for me. While I recognise what the book's trying to do, with its slapstick-like/absurd comedy (bordering on so unrealistic that it was testing my ability to suspend disbelief) and super-sticky-sweet (which is just personally not my taste, but someone who loves a romance where the two are constantly professing their love for one another would enjoy it), I just don't personally think it's entirely for me.
The writing also couldn't seem to make up its mind in terms of tone, and you know the old adage "show not tell"? Well, this was pretty much all tell, either in dialogue or in the prose, and most of the dialogue bits also felt quite unrealistic. And since I'm a sucker for quality of writing, this personally was not really an aspect of the book that I really enjoyed.
The mystery aspect also could have benefited from being more... mysterious. Most of the "mystery" was quickly unraveled through heavily-expository dialogue that just tells you everything - and instead of Holly actively taking steps to uncover any mystery, she just stumbles into one and has it all figured out through eavesdropping on said dialogue.
Many scenes also felt really unnecessary to me, as if they didn't really serve any point except to be humorous, but much of the humour fell flat for me because the tone didn't really work.
Things I liked:
I did like Ivy, and felt she had the best character and most depth out of all the characters. I also thought there was a good idea that could have been explored more, of capitalism and exploitation of workers and backstabbing in academia... but they weren't explored.
I appreciate the foray into botany in this book, and that was an intriguing aspect, as well as the potential the premise of the mystery had, but many other elements fell too flat for me to properly enjoy this book.
By – Kira Seamon Format – Kindle Edition Print Length – 243 Pages Genre – Fiction My Ratings – 4.7/5
Dead Cereus by Kira Seamon is a novel that stands out amongst others in the same genre. I like the book a lot and found myself immersed in it throughout. I couldn't put the book down until the very end, and it continued to amaze me. I can confidently state that the book stands on its own, and what a wonderful debut novel by the author; I'm definitely a fan now. Holly Jackson, a college junior working in the Greenhouses while studying at Shellesby College on a scholarship, is the protagonist of the novel. She is currently dating William, an older man. A lot occurred to her in a short period of time, and she was suspended from college. As events unfolded, it became clear that not only her scholarship, but possibly her life, was in jeopardy. At the College's Night Lights Gala, a visitor was murdered right in front of Holly's eyes, and now she's racing against the clock to solve the murder while simultaneously trying to maintain her scholarship. Many concerns now arise, including whether Holly will be able to trace down the murderer and learn her intentions. Will she be able to obtain the scholarship that she so dearly desires? What lengths will she go to in order to obtain her true desires? All of these questions are expertly addressed throughout the story, do read the book to learn more about the plot. The book's title is directly tied to the content, while the cover is appealing. The language was reader-friendly, but the author's unique and exhilarating imagination deserves all of the credit. The novel is packed with action, adventure, romance, mystery, suspense, and several twists and turns that completely captured my interest. Overall, I thought it to be a fascinating read since the entire narrative was incredible and the characters created by the author were so vivid that I felt like I was a part of the tale while reading it. Holly and William's relationship was brilliantly shown, and there is no question that they are soulmates. I highly urge each of you to purchase a copy of the book. Happy Reading
Dead Cereus May Require a Bit of Patience to Settle Into the Story. I had difficulty settling into the storyline and connecting with the characters. Much of the book shares a lot of fascinating botany-themed information--with some foodie-friendly scenes too. While I did find the botany topics interesting--it took a while for me to find my way into the story. The pace did pick up after a few chapters. The author did throw in some growing challenges and conflicts for her characters to face. There were murders--but they almost took a back seat to some of Holly's personal issues. As Holly's side stories began to develop--an internship application, her consistently lousy decision making, a scholarship revocation looming--I became interested in watching her personal life issues unfold.
The Characters May Not Be Endearing. Honestly, I wouldn't say I liked any of the characters in this book. I think I liked the plants more than the characters at times. I didn't feel that Holly's maturity level often fit her role in the plot--nor did her actions seem very plausible. Part of the fun of cozy mysteries is watching a likable yet unlikely lead character take on the role of crime solver. Holly participates in the murder solving, but her actions often seem to hurt and distract than help the story resolution.
Would I Recommend Dead Cereus by Kira Seamon? I didn't love the characters, but I felt invested in seeing all of the loose ends tie-up. I did really enjoy the food references and the plants a lot--having the glossary and "recipe book" at the end of the book was interesting as well. If you enjoy botany and food themes--combined with a bit of murder mystery--you may find things to love about Dead Cereus.
I received a copy of this book from the author or publisher. All opinions are my own.
📚Book Review📚 Title – Dead Cereus Author – Kira Seamon My Ratings – 4.8/5
Have you ever read a book that contains a lot of information about Botany and, on top of that, a Murder that isn't like an usual crime story? So, I recently came across a book called Dead Cereus by Kira Seamon, which is a book full of action, mystery, suspense, and a lot of turns, making it an overall enjoyable read.
Holy Jackson, who was a scholarship student at Shellesby College, takes the protagonist's seat. A rare cereus plant is scheduled to unfold its flowers on Shellesby College's gala night. Everyone was looking forward to seeing it, but there was a catch. In front of Holy's eyes, a visitor was slain. In addition, the Title is self-explanatory.
Holy was now in a race against time to apprehend a murderer while also trying to save her scholarship. Will she be able to protect it and apprehend the assailant? Once you've finished reading this gripping story, you'll have all the answers to your questions.
Dead Cereus, by Kira Seamon, provides a new perspective for readers who enjoy nature and its pleasures, whether through emotions or physical symbols like food, plants, and herbs. Within the lovely setting of a university's amazing botanical garden, we see a mystery interlaced with delicate, wonderful romance.
The novel is unique, and it held me hooked to my seat until the very last page. I found the plot to be well-paced and not overly long. Dead Cereus will pique your interest if you're looking for a hilarious romance thriller or a cosy mystery novel with passionate characters and a fascinating plot. I strongly suggest that each of you obtain a copy of it.
A great book for mystery lover by the debutant author Kira SeaMon.
The central character of this novel is Holly Jackson and the entire novel revolves around her. Holly's life is in a soup, she has only been facing ignorance from almost every where. Her family has abandoned her and she is not in good terms with her college director too. So she is surrounded with difficulties from everywhere but as it's said there's always a ray of hope. So Holly's ray of hope lies in the scholarship at Shellesby College.
The real thrill starts when one night Holly went to the Night Gala to recieve her scholarship but the problem in her life doesn't seem to put a full stop as there she witnesses the murder of a guest.
Holly is now in two minds , one where she decides to solve the murder mystery and second the scholarship.
Reader read the book and find out will Holly solve the murder mystery?? Will she get the scholarship?
What I really liked in this book is about this character Holly and this one opened in an interesting way with a scene that will pull you into the situation
The language is razor-sharp, the characters are vivid, and the storytelling is full of wonders and surprises, which is all the more remarkable.
Hallmark Channel, here we come. Kira Seamon’s novel, Dead Cereus is something right up their alley.
A read that is cozy and laugh-out-loud funny, Dead Cereus had me giggling almost from the get-go. Added to that, mystery and a little romance and you have a winner.
Dead Cereus is an interesting and unique read, with the introduction of exotic plants. It’s a setting not often used, and it is a learning experience for those unfamiliar with them. As someone that can kill plants by just glancing at them, I was thrilled to enter that world. The reader just can’t help but devour all of the details that Seamon provides.
The puns are thick (the names of characters are even Holly and Ivy), but even here the author shows her devotion to the setting.
Additionally, Seamon includes something for the palate as well--Recipes! Who doesn’t like to have a little something to snack on while they read? I can’t wait to try each and every one.
Thriller, mystery and fantasy is one of my favorite genre and with independent plots I have read alot of books and titles revolving around it but it is my initial reads to read the combination of these genre, and after reading it I have realized that it worked really well for me and I will be open to read more titles by the author.
📚The story unfolds when an abandoned and self dependent girl Holly gets a scholarship to study at shellesby College where not much people liked her, but little did she know that she'll land herself in trouble as she eye witnessed a murder.
📚Though it was the debut book by the author then also she has put together the plot and narration well where the genre was served with a tinge of romance element which made it quite gripping to read. I love how the book executed the thrill with ample of character development.
📕If you love suspense genre, this book is definitely for you, keeps you guessing till the last minute, twist & turns, emotions & what not!

I enjoyed this cozy mystery story with all of the characters. The main character was Holly Jackson.
Holly Jackson could be the next rising star in the botanical department. But everything she doesn't go just right. There a rare plant that is scheduled to bloom and the collage is excited about it. Holly is the person that the collage put in charge of hosting the event. Everything is do find until a killer show up.
