Call of the Rockies #7

Peace in the Mountain Haven

Rate this book
This epic journey is her best chance to find the family she and her daughter long for.

Watkuese is desperate to return across the Rocky Mountains before winter sets in. Time is running out for her to get her adopted daughter back to the familiar surroundings of the Shoshone village before the grief of her parents’ death causes irreparable damage.

Hugh Charpentier has spent his life watching over his siblings, which meant also ensuring his brother’s widow and babe are settled well into their new life. Now he’s asked to help shepherd a woman and child he barely knows across the mountains. As hard as it is to keep up with a six-year-old in the treacherous Rockies, it’s not nearly as dangerous as risking his heart to a woman and child who may not ever be his.

Peace in the Mountain Haven is part of the Call of the Rockies series, yet can be enjoyed even if you haven’t read any of the other books. The pages contain a sweet love story that develops between Hugh, a man who thinks isn’t worthy of love, and Watkuese, who is trying her very best to be the mother that her adopted daughter needs.

Watkuese’s daughter, Pop-pank, actually frustrated me a lot at the beginning of the story. She had the habit of running away and hiding from everyone, not coming out from her hiding spots for hours and hours. It was a very dangerous thing for her to do and I felt badly for Watkuese when she had to deal with that. However, it became clear that the hiding was linked to the deep hurt that she was still experiencing from losing her parents. As she traveled with Watkuese, Hugh, and Louis, I enjoyed seeing her become a happier child.

I really enjoyed reading about the journey that these four travelers took as they escorted Watkeuse and Pop-pank back to their former community. There was adventure and danger and a couple of heart-tugging kisses, too! I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series. I was not ready for this one to end.

Another epic wilderness adventure in the Call of the Rockies series! I like that these follow a group of friends and travelers (which grows with each book), yet each can be read as a stand alone. They can also be read in order for time continuity. Hugh is a newcomer to this group, joining them when his search for his sister-in-law came to an end. He's solemn and stalwart, which hides his insecurities and pain from his childhood. He's caring and compassionate with others, even when he has a difficult time showing it. Watkuese is grieving her friend's death and honoring her by taking in her daughter, who is also deep in grief, and acting out in unsafe ways. Hugh, his younger brother Louis, and Watkuese work together on their journey back to Watkeuse's tribe to protect the child and help her heal, and it takes time as they make their way through the dangerous terrain. The time also allows for introspection, spiritual growth, and bonding as Hugh and Watkeuse rely on each other. They develop wonderful chemistry and I really enjoyed their romance. A strong addition to the series!

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Peace in the Mountain Haven is yet another book in the exciting Call of the Rockies series from Misty Beller. This one is book seven. I was so happy to visit with some old friends in this series as well as meeting new and exciting in this story. Hugh Charpentier is to help a woman and her six year old down the rough and rugged Rockie Mountains. Watkuese is determined to find her way back down the mountain. Follow their journey as these almost strangers struggle to find their way.

I loved this journey even though some of the scenes were so hard to read about because the way was so treacherous at times. Sometimes I found it hard to put this book down, I was so engrossed in the story. Beller has no trouble keeling the attention of her readers, and she does a fantastic job in this one. Peace in the Mountain Haven is another favorite of mine and I sure hope there is a book eight!

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

Peace in the Mountain Haven is the seventh installment from Misty M Beller’s fabulous series, Call of the Rockies. I adored this story. I enjoyed going back in time taking an adventure through the Rocky Mountains. On this journey, there is danger, action, drama and love. The characters are relatable and great getting to know. I had to keep reading until I found out how it all ends for them.

I am giving Peace in the Mountain Haven a very well deserved five plus stars. I highly recommend it for readers who enjoy reading clean historical fiction. As always, I will be looking for more from Misty M Beller in the future, as well as, the next installment from Call of the Rockies series, Grace on the Mountain Trail.

I received a digital copy of Peace in the Mountain Haven from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

Misty Beller knows how to write about adventure. As Hugh is asked to ensure that Watkuese and her 6 year old daughter make it safely to their destination, he finds the young girl much more of a challenge than he expected. At the same time he sees something very special in Watkuese despite not having expected it at all.
Both Hugh and his brother, who is traveling with him, are wonderful characters and as they experience many hardships to overcome, you can see their personalities shining through. The entire series has been exceptional and this book is a wonderful addition to the previous books. There was drama, action and romance as the book progresses.

The author did an excellent job on this book. And I am lucky to have an opportunity to read it!

Neither of them were looking for love...

I enjoyed Misty's newest novel. As always it was filled with romance, drama, and danger which I love. Misty has this wonderful way of immersing her readers into her characters' world which is a delight to read, and her books are always full of faith and God's love.

Hugh is such a sweet and tender man hidden under his fears of hurting the people he loves. And Watkuese is a strong woman, filled with unending love for her adopted daughter, and just wants nothing less than true love.

I really like Hugh and his brother Louis' story. It was so tragic yet incredibly sweet. The story of brotherly love and sacrifice is beautiful.

Amazing! I love how Ms. Beller writes books that touch your heart! In this book we go on a journey through the Rocky mountains with Hugh and Louis as they take Watkuese and her daughter Pop-pank back to their village. Pop-pank is only 6 years old but my goodness she is a handful for anyone to take care of especially with a bad habit she has picked up! Lol I think I would have had to give her a spanking! But the author seems to know what she needs better than me! Watkuese is a very headstrong young woman and she adds beauty to our story. Getting to know Hugh and Louis was interesting as you see brothers that are so different but deep inside so much alike. I'm really enjoying this series and each book is so different but we get to know the main characters better in each one. I love this authors writing!

In the current politically-charged, divisive culture that has seemingly permeated every aspect of society, it is a great relief to be able to escape into a novel for a breath of fresh air. How much more so when the characters are diverse and their conflicts acknowledged without sugarcoating, yet also without propagandized dogma. This is just one of the many reasons that Misty Beller is one of my favorite historical fiction authors, as her “Call of the Rockies” series continues with book seven, “Peace in the Mountain Haven.” As I often observe with regard to series, this one can be read as standalones, but it is most thoroughly enjoyed in chronological order.

Set in the Clearwater River Valley in 1831 in what will later become the Idaho Territory, “Peace in the Mountain Haven” tells Watkuese and Hugh Charpentier’s stories. A feature of this tale that I found especially interesting is the fact that neither main character is a practicing Christian at the beginning; in my opinion, this makes things more challenging for the author, but Beller still infuses the Christian element into the narrative in a believable manner. Despite the ethnic differences between them, both characters share similar struggles and are outliers of a sort amongst their own people. Watkuese possesses a fiercely independent nature that has led her to forge her own path in life and to resist being cowed by any man. When this comes to a head, she exclaims, “I am so weary of everyone thinking they know what’s best for me. My entire life, men think they know what’s best for me…I have a mind of my own, and I know what I want.” Much the same can be said of her adopted daughter, six-year-old Pop-pank, who has not come to terms with her grief over the death of her parents.

Holding people at arm’s length is Hugh’s approach to life after his childhood experiences, and his younger brother Louis is the only person he feels comfortable around. After all, “When it came to other people, he never could get it right.” His aloof disposition puts him in the ideal place to serve the Lord’s purposes, even if he hasn’t given God much thought over the years. Because of what he believes about himself and the ensuing gulf in his spiritual life, “He’d worked so hard not to let himself care or get too close to others. He was saving them from himself and making things easier on everyone when he left. Keeping his distance was necessary.” However, while God does not always heal by removing the pain, sometimes he uses our broken pieces to join us together with others who also need restoration, like a puzzle that only comes together when He is the builder. The best part of both Watkuese and Hugh’s journeys is when they come to the end of themselves and recognize that peace ultimately comes from the “Creator Father,” who is the only One who can be our true safe haven.

Ack!! Misty Beller is another author whose books I am starting to really anticipate! I was not overly impressed by the first book I read, but now, I am hopelessly a fan. Peace in the Mountain Haven is on my favorites list. Beller’s beautiful mountain settings, multi-cultural characters, and ability to recount a compelling story of both faith and love have me hooked.

In 1831, the future Idaho Territory area is home to Watkuese, a single Native American, who is raising her deceased friend’s six-year-old daughter, Pop-pank. Searching for inner peace for herself and her sullen, grieving charge, Watkuese decides to return to Pop-pank’s tribal home. Hugh Charpentier and his brother, Louis, are assigned to accompany the two back to the village.

Watkuese is a strong, independent woman who wants to make her own way and rely on no one. She is not close to the family she has, but considers Pop-pank “the daughter of her heart” and will give her life to protect the stand-offish young one.

Hugh Charpentier is a white trapper who is hardened to relationships with others because of his past. “The more you kept your distance from others, the easier it was to part ways.” He is very aloof, but he still takes great care of Wautkuese and Pop-pank. With enough nurturing, will a tender, dedicated heart emerge?

I loved Louis. He is such a happy soul, yet it is not because his life is easy. He chooses to look for ways to engage others and make them feel comfortable. He can see past walls built up to protect a heart, and isn’t afraid to meddle to encourage better thinking.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. I also bought a copy. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.

Notable Quotables:

Firewood he knew far better than people.

She'd already promised herself she would give her life to protect Pop-pank. Should she give her freedom as well?

If only he could be the man Louis thought he was.

This compelling historical drama offers a bit of a different tale. Watkuese, a native woman with and adopted daughter, Pop Pank, who lost her parents, attempt to trek over the Rocky Mountains to reach the Shoshone village Pop Pank’s parents came from before winter sets in. That alone offers plenty of challenges, but then they are joined by two white men, who offer their assistance on the dangerous journey. Each character has suffered loss, which affects their lives in irreversible ways. The trials and adventures along this journey make for an exciting story. I love the insights into the characters, which adds depths to the novel. Readers can certainly feel their emotions and identify with their struggles. I also like the author’s books because they show positive interaction between whites and natives—as friends and even family—not always in opposition. This seems realistic and an example of how people from different backgrounds can get along. I received a copy from Celebrate Lit. All opinions are my own.

Hugh, a trapper, along with his brother Louis, accompanies Walkuese and her daughter back to her camp, . Hugh struggling with his past is determined not to get close to anyone, but then he doesn't know the future. God has other plans.

The story is fraught with ongoing danger, adventure through the Rocky Mountains, and new relationship challenges. It's a heart-warming and inspirational read that had me in tears in some parts and in others gave me a warm feeling inside as I grew to feel for the characters.

A great setting, wonderful storyline, and another awesome addition to the series. Highly recommended.

I adore this series! These characters are so wonderful that I wish I could spend months living within the pages of these stories. Hugh might be one of my favorite heroes yet. His compassion and protective nature might be hidden to some beneath his quiet solemn facade but the strong silent type melts my heart every time. I highly recommend this series!

Another good one! Peace in the Mountain Haven starts up right where the previous book in the series left off. We get to learn more about Colette’s brothers-in-law, Hugh and Louis, as well as getting to dig deeper into the mind of Otskai’s cousin, Watkuese.
I found all of the characters and their journey back to Watkuese’s village both compelling and exciting. There was a good mixture of giggles, tears, danger and sweet moments. Overall, a very satisfying read that I am happy to have had the opportunity to experience.
Looking forward to White Owl’s story next!

This author is one of the best at taking a reader into the story where you feel a part of it. I was transported back in time to 1831 where people were trying to survive the dangers of the terrain, weather and possible enemies. I can’t describe how powerful the story was but without a doubt it captivated my inner desire to survive anything that came my way. The characters are very strong, determined but also have a vulnerable side to each of them. For some reason I kept hearing this song in my head “I will survive,” as the journey became one of instinct, trust and faith.

Watkuese has a big responsibility taking over the care of a six year old named Pop-Pank. The little girl misses her parents and Watkuese is trying to get her back to her own tribe before winter comes. How do you help a little girl who is grieving? It is a hard road ahead for everyone as danger and challenges await them.

Hugh oh how I am glad we get to know you better. You are such a hero in your own way by accepting the responsibility of escorting a young woman and child back to their tribe. I liked the almost stoic attitude he had at times. I think he was perhaps guarding his heart from getting hurt by a certain someone. Poor Hugh just can’t seem to say the right words around Watkuese and the distance between them grow.

Louis is the kindest and most understanding character in the story. He loves his brother Hugh, but knows he carries a heavy burden. I liked how he assured Hugh that he was nothing their Pa and encouraged him to open up to others more so they could see that he was an honest and caring person.

The story gets really good the closer they get to the village. A surprise appearance by White Owl stirred up a few emotions for Watkuese as well as Hugh. White Owl’s presence is innocent enough when he comes to bring his niece home but I think he has his heart set on making Watkuese his wife. The author brings emotions to the surface as Watkuese must face her feelings for Hugh. In the midst of this, danger surrounds them when a group of men attack the group. Oh my was this a well written scene as chaos breaks out. This scene is particularly important because it reinforces the feelings that two people have for each other and the heroic efforts taken to save our main characters from harm.

The ending is so good and I love how Hugh finally comes to accept how he is worthy and that he did make a difference in his brother’s life. I really liked White Owl and admired how he fought with strength to protect those who he was with. There is something about White Owl that intrigued me and I’m happy to know that the next book in this series features him.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

Peace in the Mountain Haven is the 7th book in the Call of the Rockies series by Misty M. Beller. I have not read all the books in this series, but I have read a few of them before this one. I do like to read Series books, although this series is great as a Standalone book. I have never been lost when reading the books out of order.

Watkuese is desparate to get her and her adopted 6yr old daughter, Pop-pank, back to the Rocky Mountains before Winter Sets in. Watkuese really wants to be in her Village and allow her 6yr old daughter to grieve the loss of her parents in a community that doesn't have reminders of her parents. Hugh Charpentier has always taken pride in helping others. He and his brother Louis take on the task of helping Watkuese and her daughter get back to the Rocky Mountains and her Village. Hugh knows this won't be an easy task, especially with a 6yr old in town, he is up for the challenge though. The group does run into a some danger along their route, but they overcome. Hugh realizes that he is falling for Watkuese but isn't sure he can ever have a relationship with her. Does the group make it safely back to Watkuese's Village? Does Hugh ever get a chance with Watkuese or is that a forbidden love?

WOW, Misty M. Beller has written another GREAT book! I have become a fan of Misty M. Beller in the past few years and I am always excited to read her books and this one was certainly up there as one of her best books. The story takes place in 1831 and I truly felt like I was back in 1831. Misty Beller does a GREAT job at capturing the reader and keeping the reader intrigued in the wonderful storyline. Watkuese and Hugh are really great characters. Hugh really is a HERO who has a heart for helping others. I admire his strength in protecting his heart during his trek to get Watkuese and her daughter back to the Village. The book is also Faith based and the Gospel is clearly represented throughout the book. I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone who enjoys Christian Historical Fiction! I am anxious to read more books in this continuing Series! FANTASTIC BOOK!

We continue our journey in the Rockies with Watkuese and her daughter Pop-pank. Watkuese is desperate to help her daughter find happiness again. When Pop-pank lost both of her birth parents a few months ago she was given to Watkuese to raise as her own. She thought leaving the village of Pop-panks people and going to her cousins village would help and it had some but now she is determined to take her back over the mountains to home.

Hugh Charpentier and his brother Louis have been in the village for a few months now and thinking their former sister in law Collette is in good hands with French and they are going to set out again to do their trapping. When they are asked to escort Watkuese and her daughter over the mountains Hugh really doesn't want to take on the responsibility but agrees because he worries for their safety. He is drawn to both the woman and her child but knows he could never be what they needed but he will keep them safe.

The journey is difficult and they have several setbacks along the way which gives both Watkuese and Hugh time to realize they care for one another. It still isn't an easy journey and they will face even more dangers before they finally reach their destination.

I love their characters and to follow on their journeys in the Rocky Mountains. Times were hard back then and you had to be tough and have faith to get you through.

I received an early copy to read and review with my honest opinion. I loved it and highly recommend it. It is part of an ongoing series and I have loved each book and characters so I recommend you start at the beginning, but this can be read as a stand alone as it gives you enough background of the characters that you will know what is going on.

I love this author. There has not been a single book of hers that I have not loved reading. And this series is amazing. Just so you know. You’re going to want to read the entire series. And in all reality, you’re going to want to read everything by Misty M Beller as well.

When I’m done reading her books I always pass them on. That is after my teenage daughters get done reading them(they’re 16 and 17). If you’ve followed my book reviews for long you know that finding quality literature for my teens is always something on my radar.

Okay, my beef with this book. The cover. I love the background but this is not how I envision our hero Hugh looking. I had to ignore him on the cover because it did not mesh with him in my mind. And of course him in my mind is the right way to go!

Add in one precocious little girl whose parents have died. She’s having a hard time dealing with things and that makes her a bit of a “problem” child at the beginning. I wanted to grab her into a huge hug and not let go.

A perilous journey through the Rockies in 1831 for three adults and one child kept this reader engaged throughout. Watkuese and six year old adopted daughter Pop-pank were determined to travel back to their former village before the winter set in. Realizing how independent Watkuese was and fearing she would try to slip away without saying goodbye to friends and family, two trappers were encouraged to go with them as protection. Although Hugh and brother Louis weren’t keen on the idea, they followed Watkuese and Pop-pank during the night after finding out they had left.
This was a heart tugging story for me and I found myself reaching for a tissue every now and then. I loved how the characters were portrayed and how they developed over time. Much adventure and danger followed them along the way. Close calls had me on the edge of my seat, heart pounding like I was actually there with them. What will happen when Watkuese finally reaches the village she is traveling to? How will all their lives change? This is a great escape for those adventurous enough to open the pages and get lost in the story like I did. I highly recommend!

Call of the Rockies series continues with book 7, Peace in the Mountain Haven. Misty M. Beller started the series with one set of characters. Throughout the series new characters have been added. In book 7, none of the original main characters have a starring role. The underlying theme of positive interactions between Native Americans and Anglos continues. As does the message that the God of the universe is not the “white man’s God.”
I love how Beller always has members of these two cultures supporting each other through challenges. Characters face challenges that are universal no matter your culture. In the case of Peace in the Mountain Haven that challenge is overcoming the loss of loved ones and starting over with a “new normal.”
I look forward to reading the next book in the Call of the Rockies series.
Even though Peace in the Mountain Haven is meant for the adult historical fiction market, there is nothing that would keep it from a K-12 Christian school library. I think high schoolers and maybe some middle schoolers would enjoy it.

Peace in the Mountain Haven is book seven in the Call of the Rockies series that is written by Misty M. Beller. I have been fortunate enough to read the series, but they can be read as stand alones. I always learn so much from this author. Her research is detailed to bring her characters to life across the pages.

Watkuese is desperate to return across the Rocky Mountains before winter sets in. Hugh Charpentier has spent his life watching over his siblings, which meant also ensuring his brother’s widow and babe are settled well into their new life. Now he’s asked to help shepherd a woman and child he barely knows across the mountains. Hugh thinks that he is not worthy of love - and Watkuese is trying so hard to hold it together and be the best mother to her adopted daughter. Hugh shares his faith with Watkuese. He feels so drawn towards Watkuese and her daughter.

The story is well written with wonderful characters. I loved seeing the relationship grow between the two of them. The storyline is unique.

Watkuese is bound and determined to get her and the daughter of her heart back to their home before winter sets in. Pop-pank is only six years old, but the loss of her parents is weighing heavy on her young mind and soul, and Watkuese will do anything to make her burden lighter. However, Pop-pank is not making things easier with her sullenness and bad temperament and her constant running away in the dangerous mountains.

Hugh and his brother Louise were on their way up the mountains as well and were tasked with helping bring this mother and daughter back to their home. What none of them expected was an opening of their hearts and the facing and coming to terms with their past.

Set against the backdrop of the magnificent yet treacherous Rocky Mountains, this group face dangers of nature and man in trying to get to and to find home again. And maybe, just maybe, something new and wonderful will come of their rugged journey.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

I have always enjoyed books, movies and tv shows about the West. Western stories are my absolute favorites. This explains why I can never resist reading one of Misty M. Beller's books. Her books bring me great joy. I really feel that I am on a journey with her characters.

Watkuese has so much to give to that special someone. She was not ready to marry just anyone. She even fled from her own home so that she had a choice in the matter.

On her journey, she met Hugh and his brother, Louis. Watkuese and Hugh were careful in showing their real feelings. They didn't want to hurt others but were also afraid to be hurt. They were both caregivers. But were hesitant in receiving comfort from others.

Should Watkuese play it safe and stay with her people? Or should she take a chance?

Hugh had this belief of what type of person he was. His brother saw him differently. What should he believe? Could Hugh trust his heart?

Misty Beller has an unremarkable ability to sweep the reader into the story as if we are right in the scene. As part of the Call of the Rockies series, Peace in the Mountain Haven can be read as a stand alone but is so much better as part of the series. With each book, the series keeps getting better and better.

Watkuese is anxious to do what is best for her adopted daughter, which includes crossing over the Rocky Mountains. She is desperate to cross. When a solution comes up with the mysterious Hugh as the guide, she is willing to go. Hugh, however, is reluctant. The journey is very difficult and complicated with an adventurous little one along. As the journey continues, Watkuese and Hugh can’t deny they are being drawn to each other.

I really enjoyed this book as well as other books in the series. The characters are realistic and likeable. The fact that the journey was difficult made the book even more enticing.

I would recommend this book. I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own and I was not required to leave a positive review.

The 6 yr old girl who has lost her parents to death and becomesa natural escape artist in the forest

and rustic America of 1831. Watkeuse (her new mother) along with Hugh and Louis, brothers who are guides going along to make sure they arrive safely to their home village quite far away especially traveling by horses!
We just hop in our car and go today! Wasn't like that back then!

The adults around her were very understanding for they knew she was dealing with grief over her parents losses! The new mother was as sweet as could be but she was not her mother, was how the girl felt! So she loved to run and play hide and seek but never find! So the pages were flipping and flying to find out the next twist or turn! Full of excitement, adventures, suspense, tension, and some tears (if you're a crying person)!
ANOTHER SUPER GREAT READ! HIGHLY RECOMMEND! ENJOY!

Whenever I start reading a book by Misty M. Beller, I expect wonderful characters and storylines. As the next book in this series about life in the Rockies, this book lived up to my expectations.

What I love about any series this author writes stems from the way familiar characters reappear and continue to develop. To get the full benefit of this story, I recommend reading the books in order.

With a willful six-year-old who demonstrates no fear, an adopted mother who wants the best for her daughter, and a man willing to do anything for his family, this book will draw you into the story.

So if you enjoy Christian Historical fiction, check out this book for yourself.

I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

It should be said that historical fiction is not my favorite genre, so part of my 2 star rating is personal preference. Although I did like how the young girl was written as a child dealing with recent trauma, the other characters just didn't make sense to me. There personalities were so predictable, and rather dramatic. The fact that the main character was so convinced he'd end up like his dad seemed an immature response to the situation to me. I don't want to give any of the story away so won't go into detail on the rest other character's specific personality traits that seemed immature, or maybe just not well developed. If I decide to brave the world of historical fiction again, I will give this author another try.
