“The lesson you teach all of us, Lula, is the hardest lesson to learn of all […] No, Lula. I’m speaking of detachment. The Jedi must not be ruled by our feelings. But that doesn’t mean we don’t love or care about anything. The opposite, really. We must learn to love and let go at the same time.”

This was such a beautiful issue, really! A true culmination of everything we have been through with these characters and a true return to form for a series that is so simple but has so much heart.

I find that this issue has more depth and heart than I was expecting considering that we had been coming from some simpler issues.

As always, it is the dynamic, parallels and developments between Zeen and Lula that make this series truly shine. They were the reason I fell in love with this series in the first case and whenever we truly focus on them the issues go to another complete level.

That being said, I am nervous about the other very pressing developments that we have going and how everything will be resolved. It's quite tense in here right now.

“Maybe love is at the heart of everything the Jedi do. And maybe the only way to love is to let go. And reach out.”

This is a nice little development, and return to form, with the parallels between Lula and Zeen.

The twelfth issue of Daniel José Older’s High Republic Adventures is a must-read before diving into Midnight Horizons (which I have already read and will politely abstain from mentioning in detail during this review). But it should be noted that several aspects neatly overlap with Midnight Horizon, with a little deviation that can be chalked up to the notion of “from a certain point of view.”

Since the first issue of The High Republic Adventures it has been abundantly clear that Lula and Zeen are two halves of the same whole, both stylistically through the artistic choices of the artists, to Older’s intentional parallels and narrative direction. In this issue, “Let Go,” we see a flashback of Lula’s Master Kantam Sy teaching her about the balance a Jedi must endeavor to commit to where attachments are concerned: loving and letting go. Which I fear is going to be something that Lula and Zeen will both struggle with.

“Let Go” also serves as a bit of a dual story about letting go because so much of its plot is focused on Zeen tracking down Krix and grappling with the weight of what he’s done since Trymant. Zeen certainly has a lot to reckon with and learn to let go of as a Force user that had to hide that part of herself for so long and as someone whose closest friend turned to the Nihil and has been destroying the galaxy rather than accepting her for who she really was. Again, it just really underscores how Lula and Zeen have been narratively connected. Whatever one is dealing with, the other is equally forced to face the same emotion.

Through the course of the issue, the Jedi (and Zeen) track down Krix and apprehend him, effectively cutting him off from the Nihil and explaining why he was absent from the chaos of The Fallen Star. I really loved the image of the good guys high-fiving while Krix lays on the floor, it’s both hilariously juvenile and somehow exactly what I’ve come to expect from the Jedi. But we all know that pride goeth before the fall and I’m certain this isn’t the end of the Krix situation for anyone involved.

As always, Older, Harvey Tolibao, Pow Rodrix, and Rebecca Nalty have provided a stellar installment to The High Republic Adventures. You can always count on this comic book run to be filled with heart, humor, and a band of characters you can’t help but adore. It’s nice to see so many of those early elements getting paid off, as the story continues to progress towards the heartache and tragedy of The Fallen Star.

With The High Republic Adventures nearing a close, Daniel José Older once again shows that he's wearing his heart on his sleeve while writing. Not only is it incredibly rewarding to see Zeen and Lula finally growing into a romantic pairing, it is also done with extreme care and nuance and makes me feel all fuzzy and warm as I watch these two work through the mess of their feelings. And, well, as Krix is hopefully getting what he deserves soon. This is one of the strongest issues of this comic run and the crossover with Midnight Horizon makes it even more fun. I'm sad to see it end soon, but I look forward to the final issue!

"Maybe love is at the heart of everything the Jedi do."

The best issue of this series so far, without a doubt. I loved it. As this is the second-to-last issue of this series, things are really heating up. As the Jedi are trying to locate and capture Krix and his band of Nihil, Zeen and Lula are both struggling with what they are supposed to do and be, and how their futures will most likely force them to go their separate ways. But as the Jedi are all called to battle, there is no time to question or fear: Lula and Zeen must trust in themselves and their friends if they are to succeed on their mission and survive.

I love this series. I love these characters. I love everything about this comic. This issue has everything I adore about his story Daniel Jose Older has told us: discussions on what being a jedi means and is (this issue focuses on what love means to Jedi and what love truly means for our characters), action, humor, heartfelt moments of friendship (between the padawans and between Lula and her master) and brilliant art. This is one of my favorite SW comics ever - I think I've said it in pretty much every review of every issue but I don't care - it is so good.

The heart of this issue was the relationship between Lula and Zeen. They are two of my fave character in the High Republic story and the development of their relationship has been a joy to follow. The depth of their love for one another and the way they always know what the other is doing, thinking and feeling, is so FUCKING GODDAMN BEAUTIFUL. I also cannot handle the fact that

I gotta stop writing cause I feel a deep, profound desire to go hyperventilate on my bed and ugly sob over how much I love this series and its characters.

Zeen and Lula's relationship continues to be one of my favorite things about this run. I was a bit disappointed with how much the events here overlap with what we see in Midnight Horizons.

ok. DARE I SAY IT, but anakin and padme could NEVER. this is my favorite of the high republic comics so far just because of zeen and lula—the way their connection is shown through the art is so beautiful!! oh my god i adore it. there was one page in this where i actually lost my mind and was like “!!!! they’re actually doing it!!!!” it was such a pleasant surprise because i genuinely did NOT expect this when going into this comic. i love seeing the way the jedi in the high republic era personally interpret the jedi code.
