A grown-up and depressed Peter Pan is fighting to protect Neverland from the realm-conquering Commodore Hook. When Peter's runaway shadow shows up at Wendy's workplace, she's eager for the chance to visit Neverland again, to help protect it--and sure, to see the Fae man she's been in love with for ten years. But Neverland is far different than Wendy remembers, with monsters both literal and human-shaped threatening everything Peter has tried to build.

Adult romance, mild-to-medium heat, cliffhanger ending with HEA in Part 2

Oh what fun fairytale retellings are. They feature all my favorite characters, whole new storylines and worlds, and even better, they’re all grown up and ready to play. Peter Pan, quite possibly my favorite of the original Disney movies, and classic story. I love every retelling, some more than others, and this is up there with them! Wendy is all grown up, having left Neverland ten years prior at age 15, concerned for her parents and her little brothers. She’s missed it ever since, dreaming Pan, his sister Trill, and the Lost Kids. One day, Peter Pan’s shadow appears to her at work, breaking up the monotony of her day, and forcing Pan himself to come searching for it. He’s grown up too, and he’s not pleased to be in Wendy’s company. She left him, you see, and Pan doesn’t take kindly to not getting his way. But Wendy bargains with him, as she wants nothing more than to return to Neverland.

Only it’s changed, as has everyone who she once knew. Captain Hook is now Commodore, and he’s been at war with the realms, slowly conquering them one by one, having defeated Peter after Wendy left him. He doesn’t view Pan as a threat anymore, but Peter has changed, and he’s accumulated lots of allies…enough to declare war with Hook over Neverland. And there is someone new in Neverland too, a new Mother. And she doesn’t take kindly to Wendy. So, loved a tortured and hurting Peter, who didn’t realize that his pain was love for Wendy. Loved Wendy and her fierceness and bravery, although she sure fell for the bullshit that Mother tried to spew, which made the ending somehow both predictable and also has me on the edge of my seat. Can’t wait to meet Hook in the next book and see how Peter and Wendy find their HEA!

"A thousand false hopes, a thousand fractures spiderwebbed across your soul until it is a dull, heavy thing seamed with the scars of disenchantment."

How. Does. Kenney. Write. So. Well??

This book was everything I wanted and more and I cannot WAIT until part 2. It was fun and sensual and hot with just the right peppering of emotion. God knows I love me a "broken fae boy" and this just really hit the mark. I love that the characters are flawed but lovely and Kenney manages pack so much character into a single line. I loved everyone I was supposed to.

Particularly sweet is Trill's relationship with....well, everyone, actually, and I can't wait to see if she and Nibs get their happy ever after too.

I looooove the relationship between Peter and Wendy, that constant attraction, that push and pull, the whirl of fabulous conflict. Really happy that a certain trope was subverted in the end which would have reeked of forced conflict.

I love it I love it I love it and I want MORE.

This is the Peter Pan story I have needed and wanted!

This book was just the right amount of hot and steamy for me, the romance was written perfectly and I want more... Which is fantastic because I am about to dive straight into book two!

The grown up Peter and Wendy were written beautifully and I loved the complex emotions... The longing... The lust! That they both shared after being apart for so long.

Wendy Darling remains faithful to the original tale, but Rebecca has woven Neverland into something truely hers and it is magical.

Pure faerie perfection.

Honestly, I loved the idea of a grown up version of this tale. Peter Pan being bitter and jaded added a twist to the playful mischievous boy we all knew and loved. I was so excited to see how the romance between this new feisty adult Wendy and Peter turned out.

But.

This author clearly has some sexual kink that spilled into the story rather ridiculously. This ran like a fan fiction after the first 1/3 of the book.

Wendy, a self proclaimed Feminist, who likely wants to burn her bra at the thought of men objectifying her, objectifies herself in her first battle in Neverland. She doesn’t use any of the years’ worth of skill she drummed up through painstaking sword training. She doesn’t use her brain or charm or any other trait. Oh no. She uses her breasts instead because she could think of no other way to take the enemy by surprise except to flash them. Real original, homegirl. I almost entirely gave up the book here. But Peter and Wendy had chemistry. I wanted to see it play out.

Hints of sexual perversion are praised throughout throughout the story but with no explicit scenes until it all culminates at a party celebrating Wendy’s return to Neverland. From my skimming I gathered that this party devolves into a full fledged orgy where Wendy is tempted to partake and UGH I just couldn’t go on anymore. So much time is spent on this portion of the book that, like I said before, it read like a weirdly fetishized fan fic of Peter Pan.

Is this kind of kink being normalized? I guess so because so many people like books with this kind of sexual deviancy- I’m looking at you Sarah J Maas and Jennifer Armentrout. Threesomes are now being hailed as the new sexy thing and even polyamory doesn’t have people raising eyebrows anymore.

Some people will get rabidly offended at the sentiments I expressed here, however, I need to warn off the rest of us normies from this kind of filth. Don’t go burning bras on me! My eyes have already been assaulted.

There’s my two cents. Skip it peeps!

The Peter Pan story I've been waiting for!

Disclaimer: I'm a huge Pannie (Is that a word? It should be a word), so I was 100% biased toward this story right off the bat. And hot DAMN, did it deliver. From the moment Peter slips through Wendy's window in search of that slippery shadow of his and he and Wendy get (literally) wrapped up in each once again, I was a goner. I don't know what to say other than thank you. Thank you, Kenney, for weaving your magic and creating this magical story I've been waiting my entire life to read.

Now, on to part 2!

Not my favorite Kenney novel, but pretty good. This one felt rushed and didn't have the chemistry between characters that Kenney is so good at writing. It is full of angst, yes, and begins building a fun world, which she is good at too. I liked all of the characters that are introduced in Neverland and how the war against Hook is presented. But it also felt amateurish. Wendy started off strong and focused but she became more vulnerable as the story went on - and this didn't match who she is. Melanie, a woman who lives with the Lost Boys and Peter, is someone Wendy can't stand and knows to avoid and yet she becomes someone who successfully harasses and intimidates Wendy. It just didn't fit. It is worth reading if Neverland and Hook are favorite themes. It's a quick read and pushes you to read the next one.

Wendy is giving “pick me” “I’m not like the other girls”. The author is giving male gaze tbh. I swear at least 1/3 of the story are about Wendy’s boobs in some shape or form.

I did like the world and merging other characters into this story but how could Hook really be that powerful… I don’t get it.

And Melanie is very obvious with her intentions so there is no real surprise with where the story goes.

Teenage me would've really enjoyed this Peter Pan retelling, but adult me LOVED it! Wendy, Darling is the 5th book I've read by Kenney and considering I've already dived into the sequel, it obviously won't be the last.

The world-building and descriptions are wonderful and seeing Pan as an adult has been so much fun. Wendy's absence after that week in Neverland has been very hard on him. But she's back now and together they can fight Hook and save the realm! I also love that Wendy has grown up a lot and even took lessons in fighting. She's no damsel! She can hold her own and that's awesome.

The book ends on a cliffhanger, but the second book is already out so there's no wait. I've already started it and I'm super eager to see how Wendy is going to get herself out of her current predicament!

This is the perfect Neverland retelling I didn't know I needed! Peter and the lost boys are all grown up in this tale and they are worth every year Wendy has waited for them. Wendy is now in her twenties, existing in the normal world but not thriving. Until one day Peter's shadow comes back to her. Followed by a very Grumpy Peter.
This story is a continuation of the original story with some grown up action and twists I never saw coming. I tore through it in a day because I could not put it down. Fantastic story!

This book was so poorly written... Finally gave up on it when a character revealed some big thing and then literally the next chapter was just a recap of what just happened a couple paragraphs ago. Wasn't even worth it for the smut either. Wendy kept doing things that made no sense. I should have DNF'd it when she decided to take her shirt off to distract some pirates for all of 1 second and then just started fighting shirtless. Wtf was that

Ooo. Now this is a fun Peter Pan retelling!

It’s always fun to see Wendy older but not many people add Peter aging too. I love to see it! Seeing their dynamic both change and yet stay the same as a result is amazing to witness and the way they play off one another is brilliant.

The atmosphere here is beautiful. The contrast between the real world and Neverland feels tangible and I readily enjoy both. The lore expansion fits and builds on what we think we know of the world while also giving us more than a few surprises!

And that ending…need to read book 2 now!

Never and I mean NEVER have I cringed more (both physically and mentally) reading a book. I know everyone has their own opinion and taste but it is seriously beyond me how the ratings for this book are this fucking high. Idk what y’all are on liking this and I don’t know why there aren’t more people talking shit about this book but I’m gonna fix that.

There’s so many things wrong with this I don’t even know where to start.

First of all my dude has red hair, wears leggings and throws a tantrum whenever he’s not the center of attention 💀💀 I’m aware all of this is literally based on the movie so I have no real ground to complain on (about this anyways) but I guess I would’ve preferred a dark haired morally grey man with some actual boots and you know… pants. Like Im sorry but how am I supposed to take a grown ass man in nothing but leggings seriously 💀 they have machine guns ffs, are normal clothes too much to ask?

And she? Oh heeeell nah she started annoying me from the very first page 🙅‍♀️ She’s giving “pick me” and of course she’s not like other girls 🥰 but in all honesty she really is not like other girls because I’ve truly never read about anyone as delusional as her 💀

she wanted to duel him the second they left for neverland to show him she’s not the useless little girl she used to be because she’s not like other girls oh and she took a few stage fighting classes 💁‍♀️ Then when they finally did fight for a reason I do not care to get into… just yet anyway🫣 and she, well, OBVIOUSLY LOSES which even miss never-left-her-delusional-phase-since-the-age-of-15 should’ve been aware of before and then has the audacity to GET FUCKING MAD ABOUT IT. U seriously couldn’t have guessed the outcome? You thought had a shot because you, what, took a few ACTING CLASSES??? or because u have like nice lil collection of knife replicas??? All bark no bite… Like he’s stoopid too, to say the least, but she deserved EVERYTHING that happened to her. Someone putting her in her place was the most satisfying scene in the whole book. Doesn’t mean I’m on his side tho because jesus that little motherfucker. Lil pick me, are we now? He’s a full ass narcissist not being able to handle the attention on someone else for even a second. How pathetic are you wanting to duel her in front of everyone just to show them ur a better fighter?? Nobody fucking questioned it. Get a grip dude. And did he seriously start doing upside down acrobatics or sum shit to get their attention??? 💀💀💀 He has some serious ego issues and lemme tell you, it’s not giving. This dude is a major fucking turn off.

In theory he has just recently grown up, physically whatsoever. Mentally he’s idk how many fckn hundreds of years old and since wisdom normally comes with age WHATS UR FCKN EXCUSE FOR ACTING LIKE A 5 YEAR OLD WHEN UR SUPPOSEDLY THEIR LEADER AND THE KING OF A FUCKING REALM AND AT FUCKING WAR. Smh. I didn't like the book before but after his lil tantrum I seriously could not 😪🤚 It’s one thing if the girl is annoying, god knows she was, but that I can handle. However if the dude makes me physically cringe, for honestly the worst reason possible I. simply. can. not. One thing I never wanna read about is a grown ass man acting like a child. He did not pass the fictional-men-vibe check. I thought the whole point of this book was for peter to be grown the fuck up??

I also love how on multiple occasions Peter told us about his gigantic horse cock and how he could put it to good use because he’s such an✨impeccable✨ lover🥰 Nothing scream’s “I don’t know how to satisfy women in bed” more than this guy. Wendy also ain’t proving me wrong because you honestly can’t trust a word she says. As delulu and dumb as she is I’m seriously starting to wonder if the second book ends with her waking up in a mental facility realizing she actually made it all up in her head…

Now you might ask yourself why I didn’t drop this book if I disliked so much. Well the answer is simple. I didn’t dnf for the mere reason of having more content to hate on, cuz believe me there is more 🙅‍♀️🙅‍♀️🙅‍♀️ also apparently I’m a masochist 💁‍♀️

Idk wtf rebecca was on but there ain’t no way she wasn’t high as fuck while writing this 💀

I mean they have a party where they invite all their friends from other magical realms, their clothes eventually fade and it ends in an orgy??😭😭😭

Also Wendy has a fucking foot fetish??😭😭😭

And she gets sexually harassed by A FUCKING BUSH?? We are sexualizing plants now Rebecca?? Plant porn? Seriously????
Okay now I’m exaggerating, it wasn’t porn really but a bush falling in love with her? And then not the branches and tendrils creeping up between her legs and trying to kiss her😭😭 BYEEE

One last thing. FUCKING MELANIE. That’s all I’m gonna say

I am shook to the core, not only by the book itself but also by the mostly positive reviews about it on here. Surely I cannot be the only one despising this atrocity. This is a bunch of stoopid annoying kids playing grownups or rather a fetishized kinky BAD wattpad version of Peter Pan and it is CRIMINAL to ruin the characters like that 💀 I was a huge Peter Pan fan growing up so I do take offense to that but most of all I am just disappointed that I have yet to find a good adult retelling story bc this sure as fuck wasn’t it.

5 ⭐️ I cannot contain for excitement for this story 😭 It was even better than I imagined and I was hooked literally the entire way through. I liked how this wasn’t a retelling, but a “sequel” 10 years after Wendy and her brothers returned home from Neverland. I loved the references to the original story as well as all the new details and explanations that the author weaved in. This ended on a cliffhanger and I cannot wait to read the next book. If you loved Peter Pan as a kid, you will love this as an adult! 💛✨

Most Peter Pan retellings aren’t really known, so it was really surprising for me to see Wendy, Darling always popping up everywhere. Of course, this made me even more reticent to read it, because I’m very specific in the kind of retellings I like to read. But I was very pleasantly surprised by this one. It’s a modernised sequel of the story we all know and love, where Wendy is 25 and she’s been waiting for Peter to come back for a decade. Except that when he does come back, he’s nothing like the overjoyed and naive boy she knew. He’ll need her help to fight in the war against Hook, and they will have to learn who they became all over again.

"I never thought love would be like this. I thought it would be grand and glorious, and more fun."
"It's like growing up." I stroked his cheek. "It's hard, and more painful than anyone ever told you, but you can't stop it, or exist without it. It just—happens. And then you find the beauty and joy in it."

The plot isn’t really important in this first volume, beside the general happenings of Wendy coming back to Neverland. I will be honest: nothing happens until the very last pages. So if you’re searching for an intense read full of action scenes, you can most likely skip this one. But there’s something that still kept me gripping my book to the point I devoured it any available moment: it’s the general atmosphere of the story and its characters. It was easy to see myself in Wendy rediscovering such a wonderful place, and it’s the kind of books that makes you truly feel like you belong in it. It’s a way to fly away everytime you open it.

The writing was interesting to me, because sometimes it gave us poetic lines and very lyrical ways to describe the main characters feelings. But other times, it felt almost awkward, and it was trying really hard to be funny and relevant. If you’re not trying too hard to look into it, it’s easy to forget its little flaws and just let yourself be into this lighthearted adventrure.

“Growing up was supposed to make you all prim and boring."
"But it made me more fun," I said softly.

As a retelling, it doesn’t go above and beyond to break the codes of other sequels I’ve seen. Still, there’s something about it that felt so faithful to the magic the original novel gave us. Like I said right above this, I felt like I was actually entering Neverland everytime I opened the book. It also added original elements that complemented Barrie’s work really well.

I can also applaud the way some characters were written, because they were exactly the way they were introduced to us in the orignal Peter Pan. The best example of this is Smee. He’s a way more complex character than you could expect at first glance, and most adaptations and retellings always describe him as too sweet, or too funny, or too violent. But in Wendy, Darling, the author managed to pinpoint the mix of the awkward and seemingly sweet man, and the bloodthirsty pirate.

He looked like a demon-boy, a creature of beautiful darkness, a Faerie with a soul made of night sky and stars.

The power system was so well done as well for a retelling. It used the general powers and facts we all know (Peter’s power over Neverland, Tink being a pixie, them going to search for their next Lost Boys) and added really original elements and explanations for them. I didn’t read any of the author's other books, but I assume it was specifically to link through all the other books of this series. And I think it was really well done!

Wendy is my favorite character of all times, so I always look forward to see how she’ll be represented the most. And THIS Wendy was so much fun! She was one of the most badass versions I’ve seen, and I liked that it was actually explained by her obsessing over coming back to Neverland for a decade. She’s very easy to relate to, with the way she uses books to escape reality. I usually prefer having a Wendy Darling that’s happy to come back home, because I think that’s the most important facet of her personality, and the key of her character development. But this Wendy still very felt faithful to her development, even with the way she craves Neverland with everything she has.

"Last chance to back out.”
My smile rose from my deepest self, from the starry-eyed soul of me that had always craved this moment. "Never.”

Peter was actually a really good version of a grown up Peter Pan, and I loved getting to know him. He’s far from being the Peter we know, childlike and carefree, but it’s easily explained by the decades he spent at war with a pirate that proved to be stronger than him. He had to grow up, in every way he could, in order to protect the Lost Children. I loved to see him slowly gaining back his happiness and his joy as Wendy makes him understand that growing up doesn’t have to be such a difficult experience. He slowly grows back to his own self by witnessing Wendy having the time of her life as a grown-up, and it’s very meaningful to me.

The romance was genuinely so entertaining. I can’t say it’s slow burn by any mean, but it’s actually very progressive, especially on Peter’s part. Peter needs to resolve his personal feelings about love before allowing anyone in, and I like that it wasn’t solved right away. They also don’t succumb to lust just for the sake it, and actually give time for their romance to grow. Wendy worked hard for Peter to admit his feelings, and they made sure to not have any miscommunication in it. It was just a really good mix of character growth complimenting their relationship development.

"It can't be love, because your human stories and songs say that love is beautiful and exciting, and this is torture. If what I feel is love, it's horrible, and I don't want it. I refuse it, because giving in would only make it worse later, when y—when someone has to say goodbye again.”

I will say this book has some flaws, but at the end of the day my rating will always be about my enjoyment of the book. And I’m not lying when I say I had the time of my life devouring this one! The author easily understood what’s so important in Peter Pan, and it shows. If I could read the sequel right away, I would, but since I don’t own it yet, I will bump it up to the highest priority of my wishlist.

Okay.

I read the book description BEFORE reading the book so I knew this ended in a cliffhanger so I can’t be mad about it. I even prepared myself and committed to reading the second book after.

As a consumer of all Peter Pan retelling 😂 I really enjoyed how this pulled from so many other fairytales and mythology (Greek mythology, Alice in Wonderland, Wizard of Oz, Jack Frost etc)

Not a 🌶️ book. Maybe 🌶️ out of 5. But that’s fine. Everything is fine.

LOVE the world building, the history and the past of the story and how it all played together.

Kenney has a great sense of storytelling and the characters had believable motivations throughout, which was great for bringing the story to life. I really enjoyed seeing a grumpy grown up Peter Pan.

I had to skim a few scenes that got a little "spicier" than I like, but the story was clear even with those scenes skipped.

I adore retellings. Peter is now a man and has delicious abs and chiseled arms. Still stubborn but their is darkness. Wendy just wants to go back to what life was like in Neverland but things are much different and more mature on the island. Jealous. Figuring out what love is. Betrayal. Fun.

This was delicious quick read making you want to go back to Neverland maybe. Can't wait to start the next book.
