Samantha Williams’s carefully crafted life is about to be demolished as thoroughly as her art classroom when a careening SUV smashes into the school.
In the dusty farming community of LaCrosse, Washington, art teacher Samantha Williams manages to save her students when an SUV crashes into the school. Her car isn’t so lucky. Oddly, her purse—containing her driver’s license, credit cards, and other identification—is missing from the wreckage, forcing her to rely on the kindness of strangers. Never one to trust easily, Samantha is thrust into a world far different from her simple life of jigsaw puzzles, children’s books, and lectures at the library.
One of the strangers who befriends her is a reporter from Spokane who is in town investigating two sets of skeletal remains that were recently discovered. When authorities discover that the driver in the school accident was shot before the crash, Samantha quickly becomes enmeshed in strange events, which turn ominous with the discovery of blackmail, murder, an abandoned town, and a secret government project.
Samantha has long tried to forget the tragedy of her past, but the links here can't be ignored. Yet these are secrets that others are determined to keep buried, and they’ll use any means necessary to stop Samantha’s search for truth.

Such an interesting read. It's an action packed, mystery thriller.
The plot is intriguing. It kept me guessing on what happens next. The twists and reveals in this one are chef's kiss🤌 The history of the town was something I never expected it to be. The way it's written is to the point, never will you feel like you're being burdened with useless information. It all connects!
While it was close to perfection, I didn't give it five stars cause of the slow pacing and the plot takes too much time to unravel, which is why I give it four stars. Also, I couldn't understand the forensic stuff which was detailed out, so if that's something that interests you don't hesitate to pick this one up. (It went over my head NGL).
Samantha our main character is very likable and I liked how comfortable she was with her own self and her quirks. She was a fighter from the first chapter and continued to be throughout. Her emotional past made me shed a few tears. I liked her spirituality. The fact that whenever she's in a tough situation she calls on the Almighty God is so good to read.
The supporting characters- Dutch and Mary are full of personality. Dutch is the romantic interest (there's very little romance in this); Mary is the BFF of sorts👀 The chemistry between the characters is although good to read, it's not amazing.
Overall, a pretty good read. I was initially going to give it three stars but the last sixty pages are so good, bumped it up to four.
First and foremost, a large thank you to NetGalley, Carrie Stuart Parks, and Thomas Nelson for providing me with a copy of this publication, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review.
Always a fan of Carrie Stuart Parks and her writing, I was pleased to receive an ARC of this latest novel. Parks always brings her background in forensic art to the novels, tapping into what, for me, has been a unique approach to crime and investigation. That being said, she is keen to collect other breadcrumbs and scatter them throughout, giving the reader an exiting experience as they comb their way through the story.
LaCrosse, Washington is known for little and Samantha Williams likes it that way, An art teacher at the local school, Samantha becomes a hero when an SUV careens into the school and many are hurt. Having been in her own vehicle at the time, Samantha must come to terms with what happened, though is stymied when she cannot produce any proof of her identity to authorities, as it has been removed from her purse.
Confused and relying on others, Samantha must try to piece together what’s happened and who is trying to keep her from herself. Some of these answers begin to emerge when a reporter begins asking questions and digging deeper into Samantha’s past. Samantha soon realises that there are other odd goings-on in the area, including sets of remains that were long thought buried. Is there someone trying to stir up trouble? Samantha finds herself at the heart of it all, without any answers to offer.
At a local recovery house, Clan Firinn, some others are also trying to set things straight. There appear to be a number of mysteries all tied to an old government nuclear facility close to LaCrosse and no one is quite sure what to make of it. It’s this that triggers Samantha and memories of her past, not always good. The fallout is a spiralling like no other, as the truth emerges for all to see. What secrets await Samantha on her journey and how could learning about her past be the key to understanding the present happenings? Parks offers an intriguing piece that never stops evolving.
I remember discovering the works of Carrie Stuart Parks and being instantly pulled in by the world of forensic art. It was a branch of investigation I had never considered and appeared to have ways of really stirring up the pot. Since then, Parks has evolved her stories into one-offs that pack just as much punch, but focus on other perspectives as well, including a peppering of biblical references. Parks uses her strong writing abilities to pull the reader into the middle of the story and forces them to confront whatever the narrative is spinning. This works well, as she has a depth to her characters, which adds flavour to the story and keeps the reader feeling connected to whatever is going on.
One essential to a successful story for me would have to be a clear and developing narrative. Parks offers this as she concocts what she needs to keep things progressing throughout. The story moves and has many moments where it can gain needed momentum, be that through the introduction of a new character, plot twist, or even revelation that was once deemed inconsequential. Parks has had success in crafting her stories with these ingredients and continues to do so throughout this piece. However, there were times that I felt a disconnect to the story or its progression. I was not as affixed to events as I would have liked or even expected. The investigation into the accident that opens the novel, Samantha’s past, or even how Clan Firinn fit into the larger story; all of this proved hit and miss for me. This, in turn, created a sense of confusion or lack of excitement as I flipped pages. I saw a gem in some of the foundational narrative, but did not feel the impact as strongly as I might have liked. While I have seen this book marketed as Christian fiction, that should not deter readers. It does have some biblical references, but I would not consider it fuelling the progression or flavouring of the piece. Perhaps it is my mind space at the moment that has me feeling lukewarm, which is entirely possible. I have much respect for Carrie Stuart Parks and would encourage others to red this, as well as her other books, to come to their own conclusions.
Kudos, Madam Parks, for another well-plotted novel. I hope others see some of the strong aspects I did while reading.
An intriguing story based on events around a part of Washington. Tight timeline with tons of action. Tsists and turns that will keep readers engaged and guessing. I enjoyed this book and recommend it to those who want a whisper of romance included with the mystery. Enjoyable read.
FALLOUT by Carrie Stuart Parks is an intriguing Christian suspense/mystery book featuring a small-town art instructor who must face the past she is running from to be able to stop a murderer. This is a standalone inspirational suspense/mystery with just a touch of romance.
Samantha “Sam” Williams is a protagonist who has survived a terrible past, does not trust easily, but has endearing quirks. I loved her habit of quoting from famous children’s authors and books, especially Dr. Suess’ “The Sneeches”. Dr. Dustin “Dutch” Van Seters is recovered from PTSD, works with Sam to solve the mystery of the skeletal remains, uncover her past and is the tie into Clan Firinn, which is a Christian faith compound that offers hope to law enforcement and other first responders suffering from PTSD and related disorders. Both worked well together and were fully fleshed protagonists.
The suspense plot starts off with a bang, but then bogs down for a while with all the many threads of past and present that are used. It does pick up once motives begin to be sorted and ends with an exciting climax. The forensic art inclusions and the historical element of the Hanford site were both interesting. The inclusion of biblical quotes and Sam and Dutch’s religious beliefs were paced realistically throughout the plot and never felt heavy-handed.
Overall, this Christian suspense/mystery is an enjoyable twisted intricate mystery with an uneven sense of suspense in places.
This was an excellent and gripping suspence indeed; didn't want to put the book down at all as it was a good escape read for a few hours. It was decent with language etc... nothing crude. I was skeptical of some characters and one of my hunches proved correct. There were a few brief prayers for help from God here n there with regards to Christian content per say. I was quite captivated, would certainly read another of her books but I docked without hesitation when she basically mocked (IMO) those who were suspicious of govt as conspiracy theorists/ and getting the tin foil hat out etc. That didn't endear me.....part of the basis sure was about actual secret govt nuclear reactors and the fallouts that have been used on citizens. It's not as if a government isn't corrupt and wouldn't do such an evil and callous thing to innocent citizens! (DDT, Thalidomide, Radium, etc) Overall/otherwise...a marvelous author.
I've read one of Ms. Parks' books before and loved it, so I was excited to read this one! I had a hard time with it, though.
It doesn't make sense to me how Sam and Mary became so tight in one night, and why the two ladies went unquestioningly with Dutch and Dr. Brùn. It doesn't seem realistic.
I had no emotional attachment at all to the characters. The CHARACTERS don't seem to have emotions. It's all very...flat. I DO like the whole "Sneetches" thing, though that sometimes feels forced. It all just seems so disconnected.
Another terrific suspenseful read by Carrie Stuart Parks, full of action-packed scenes, and a complex plot. Set in rural eastern Washington, this story winds up to become a nail biter towards the end, as the many events in the story--both past and present--come together to point to the sinister characters behind it all. It kept me guessing up to the reveal and had me thinking it over days later.
The main characters have unique backstories that are slowly revealed, adding layers to the plot. Samantha (Sam) shows a lot of strength to continue on after all that she has gone through. The forensic art aspect was interesting, along with the idea of a community for people who need to recover from traumas. I liked Sam's quirky coping using quotes from children's books, and drawing strength from Bible verses committed to memory. There are some brief mentions of faith in conversations, and instances of divine intervention that brought chills. A setting with the Hanford nuclear power plant playing a part created tension and a plausible danger to the storyline. The author's notes add an interesting personal connection to the story setting. I could well imagine the area described after driving through that corner of Washington on road trips.
The ending had a nice resolution and the overall read was quite good. Recommend to fans of suspense with just a hint of romance. 4.5 stars

*I have a personal jigsaw to assemble.* Samantha Williams has what she perceives to be a boring life. She teaches art at an elementary school and does nothing more exciting in her spare time than jigsaw puzzles. When an SUV plows into her classroom, her life gets very much more complicated. Maybe those puzzle solving skills can be put to good use in the unusual cases of old skeletons being found near her school. This was a very interesting story but it was sometimes hard to put together the pieces of the mystery. I enjoyed the technical aspects of putting a face on a skull. The characters were relatable and layered. Part of the puzzle was to know if things were coincidental. The author kept me guessing til the end. After the accident with the SUV, having her ID stolen and someone flooding her apartment, Samantha wonders if someone is orchestrating her life. She does not know who to trust. *The truth always finds its way to the surface.* Will secrets always stay secret? Samantha prays for guidance and tries to convey to others that she has a peace from God in spite of her circumstances. This was an exciting, complicated story that teaches lessons in trust as well as philanthropy. How long does the fallout from a secret government project last and how many lives does it impact? Find out in this many faceted, suspenseful drama. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Thomas Nelson through Partners In Crime Tours. I was not required to give a favorable review. Ughh I hate to do it, but this is a rare two-star book for me. I started this book and immediately couldn’t get into it, so I set it aside, read a different one, then came back to this one. I really wish I hadn’t wasted my time - this should have been a DNF from the beginning, but I was rating it for Goodreads and felt obligated to finish it. I think this publisher has gotten me before - I read a synopsis for what sounds like a decent forensic thriller, then when I start reading, it turns out to be Christian fiction.
I have no problem with Christian fiction, if that’s your thing, but when I read thrillers, I want them to be gritty! I like gore, horror, cursing, sex … this literally reminds me of something I might have read in the 8th grade. If a car runs into a school, I want someone to get revenge, not pray (at least, in a book). If my parents were murdered and I lost everything I owned, I don’t think I’d say “ooh those silly creeps did it again - let me think of Bible verses that relate to my trauma!”.
The writing was so sophomoric, it also feels like something written in 8th grade. Disaster after disaster strikes, and the women involved speak like kids, with their weird sayings and “Sneetches thoughts” (don’t ask). Our main character, Samantha, is always peeved that she has to drink soda when there’s no water, calls murderers “creeps” and is constantly quoting the Bible when she’s trying to solve Nancy Drew-type mysteries.
Okay so I think you get the point. If you’re a super religious type who has a teenage daughter that likes thrillers, then this is the book for you guys. If you are looking for a true thrill with dynamic writing, this is NOT the book for you. I’m sorry to do it, but it was that bad. Two stars.
(Thank you to Thomas Nelson Fiction, Carrie Stuart Parks, and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my review.)
“The fallout from our work has destroyed or killed too many people.”
“My faith gives me comfort when things aren’t going right or easy in my life. It’s described as a peace that surpasses all understanding.”
“The Lord is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid?”
I am a huge Carrie Stuart Parks fan. She writes awesome Christian suspense thrillers that keep you on the edge of your seat and she weaves in little known historical moments into her plots. Her book always has an interesting heroine and humor throughout. And best of all, any gender will like her books.
With that said, though, I didn’t connect with this one like I have done with so many of her other books. This one had a similar feel as Formula Of Deception so if you are a fan of that book, you will enjoy this one. And I will say that I enjoyed it. Parks once again has Clan Firinn as part of the plot, but this time in a larger sense. I had a little trouble connecting all the events together and I just wasn’t as much a fan of the main character, Samantha, as I was with other books by the author. I did guess the big reveal. The ending was a little anticlimactic.
But from start to finish, I did like the book. It just wasn’t as good as Fragments Of Fear or Woman In Shadow, which I thought were outstanding. Still a huge fan of this author.

Carrie Stuart Parks has a unique style and I love that you can count on the following from her novels:
Quirky main character At least one dog prominently featured Inclusion of art Historical detail intertwined in the story line Engaging tale
In Fallout (set in 2015), Samantha Williams is an art teacher in the small town of LaCrosse, Washington. Initially, I was lukewarm to her sharing quotes from children's books, however, once Samantha's motivation became clear, I was completely on board. Quote on Samantha.
Here's one quote from the novel:
"Always remember you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think." Christopher Robin
The historical details about the Hanford Nuclear Facility were fascinating and the prologue pulled me right in to the novel.
The romance was a very minor part of the novel, which worked well for the story.
My gratitude to publisher Thomas Nelson for a complimentary NetGalley copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.
Carrie Stuart Park’s books are very fascinating. Not only is she a good writer, but as a forensic artist, she brings extra interest into her books. I enjoy the forensic side of her stories very much. My thanks to Thomas Nelson Publishing for a copy of this book via Net Galley. The opinion in this review is expressly my own.
Carrie Stuart Parks is one of my go-to suspense authors – I love the mix of forensics, faith, humor, psychology, danger, and romance. Nobody creates engaging and relatable heroines quite like she does, and she’s done it again in Fallout.
Samantha Williams has clearly been through some sort of trauma in her childhood, but she’s suppressed it as a means of coping. As the other suspense threads unfold throughout the story, Parks also feeds us just enough of Samantha’s backstory to keep it niggling at the back of our minds. Reminding us that there’s information just out of reach. Uniting us with Sam in her quest for the truth. In fact, all of the suspense elements in Fallout are laid out like that, allowing us the barest hint of a connection here and there to see if we’ll be able to connect the dots before it’s too late for these characters we’ve quickly come to love. As Samantha points out toward the end of the novel, it’s all about the dots. I absolutely loved the pace of the information reveals, the high levels of tension, and the almost gothic feel surrounding Clan Firinn. Who can we trust? Who is behind all the strange occurrences? And how are they all connected – if at all? Ahhhhhh I literally could not read this fast enough to see how each puzzle piece would come together in the end.
As a random side note that no one cares about but me (lol). I appreciated the mention of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory which is significantly tied to my own family history.
Bottom Line: I was glued to the pages of Fallout from the beginning of chapter one when art teacher Samantha sees an SUV hurtling toward her occupied classroom. Carrie Stuart Parks brilliantly crafts a plot that keeps readers on the edge of their seats, holding their breath, and even – as I did at a certain twist – gasping out loud at the unexpected. She also tucks in a gentle faith thread that is organic to the character and contributed to the overall narrative as well. Sam and Dutch are likable, intelligent, and empathetic characters with layers beyond what is first seen, and I of course loved the dash of sweet romance Parks wove into their story. The tidbits of Cold War history are fascinating and sobering all at the same time, and the mood of the novel is pitch perfect. Not to mention the expertly utilized nods to some of my own beloved children’s books. I can hardly wait to go back and read it again!
(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book)
Fallout was my first experience with a novel by Carrie Stuart Parks, and wow did I end up being impressed. I could barely put this one down once I started it, and I loved that it kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. With how many suspense type of novels I end up reading, rarely do I find one that keeps me guessing right through until the end, and this one managed to accomplish exactly that. I pretty much suspected every single character throughout the course of the story, and I still ended up being completely shocked at the way everything came down at the end.
The characters were three dimensional, layered and flawed, and I found they were easy to connect with. I liked how this one really only had a light romance element, and instead the focus was on the complicated mystery, and the main character Samantha trying to connect the pieces from the mystery to her forgotten past.
The historical component made the mystery that much more intriguing, and you could tell the large amounts of research the author must have done to portray this entire situation realistically and authentically. The story felt original, and well developed, and it will definitely not be my last experience with a novel from this author.
Lastly, I loved the overall faith message, and the way that the dark content was counteracted with the need for Jesus.
Overall, a wonderful Christian suspense story, and one that blew my expectations right out of the water.
Final Rating: 4/5.
Thanks so much to Thomas Nelson for allowing me to advance read and review this one!
I voluntarily read and reviewed a complimentary advance reader copy of this novel from the publisher (Thomas Nelson) via NetGalley. I was not required to give a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own, and this is my honest review.
"Fallout" is a suspense novel. Samantha had a traumatic past. Only she couldn't really remember what happened because she was so young. She's learned to cope through art, reading children's stories, and learning odd facts and survival skills. Samantha's asked to help a forensic artist create a drawing of the skeletal remains, and she's drawn into the investigation. She realized from the start that it wasn't clear if she or the driver of the SUV was the target of the shooter. Her random skills and knowledge helped keep her alive, and she's smart enough to piece together what's going on.
The love interest, Dutch, was an ex-firefighter who quit because of survivor's guilt and became a forensic artist. He struggled to forgive himself for the death of a friend who was attempting to save him. Dutch was supportive of Sam, and they worked well together.
The characters were interesting. The suspense came from a killer trying to harm those investigating the crimes. There was no sex or bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this exciting novel.
I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.
Samantha Williams craves the simple life after a very rough childhood. She loves teaching art at the elementary school, but life becomes twisted again when an SUV crashes into the temporary trailer where art classes are held and Samantha loses her job. When she is offered a job as a forensic artist to make a face from a recently found skull on a construction site, little does she know what lies ahead for her.
As usual, Carie Stuart Parks puts together a Christian suspense novel that keeps you guessing from start to finish. Sam and Dutch worked so well together and protected one another as they tried to solve the convoluted puzzle involved in this story. The ending was a definite surprise and one I didn't expect whatsoever.
Carrie Stuart Parks' latest mystery, Fallout, is a brain-twisting whodunit. I had no clue until the villain was revealed at the end. As usual, Parks' pedigree as a forensic artist gives the story authentic detail. Samantha Williams, her endearing heroine, loves children's books, art, puzzles, and a simple life. She lacks self-confidence, often beats herself up with inner monologue that strikes me as sad, and is prone to burst out with quotes from Dr. Seuss (her sneerts as she calls them) when she's nervous. Because of a past she's worked hard to forget, she's going to lose everything and in the process, find out who she really is. Based on a true secret government project that posed an actual threat to U.S. citizens, this story mines some of the worst of the country's history. Still it manages to offer hope in the fictional characters who endeavor to do the right thing. This award-winning novel is sure to please Parks' fans.
This is an author that I highly recommend because she keeps you guessing until the very end! I loved this fast action story from beginning until end! I just didn't want to put the book down until Samantha got her story told. I wasn't disappointed at all. I loved every minute of it. I highly recommend! You'll not want to put it down until you've devoured this story. 5 stars for a job well done! My thanks for a copy of this book. I was NOT required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own!
This was a very interesting read because it starts off with a car crashing into a school classroom and teacher saving all the children. The driver crashed the car because she was shot and killed. Someone had planned this because called and told her to meet there,
The teacher Samantha Williams has her car destroyed in the accident and her purse taken. She needs to survive on the kindness of strangers.
This book is so interesting as it has blackmail, murder, an abandoned town, secret government projects and mystery all wrapped up in one book. Samantha is busy trying to figure out how all the puzzle pieces fit together and who is behind it.
I like how the story starts off slow and builds and how Samantha must trust her faith and pray to get through it all.
Thank you Net galley for my arc and this is my honest review.

Having never read anything by Carrie Stuart Parks, new author to this reader, I thought “Fall Out” was a very interesting story. It was well-written and had its share of twists and turns…what I look for to captivate my attention. Unfortunately, it took me longer to read this story as I couldn’t quite connect to some of the characters until I got further along in the story. The pace moved a bit slow, and I guess this mystery/thriller was not to my thorough enjoyment it was a good read. However, I will try another novel by this author to change my mind on the writing style.
Another outstanding novel from Carrie Stuart Parks! Kept me reading into the wee hours of the night (had to put it down around 1 am, but quickly raced to the end this morning!)
The multiple threads running throughout are tightly woven, and when it all comes together at the end, expect your mind to be blown like mine was.
An intriguing plot, wonderful characters, and some history thrown in. A very interesting and suspenseful story. Of course, there's a nod to forensic art as well, which is always very interesting! I love the plot, and how the story unfolds throughout the book. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the advance e copy of this book. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.
I love mystery/suspense novels and I'm usually pretty good at figuring out the clues, but this book kept me guessing until the very end! Author Carrie Stuart Parks has crafted a fascinating tale filled with intriguing characters, page-turning action, and several red herrings. The prologue to Fallout begins with a 1988 incident that is troubling, to say the least, and then, we progress to 2015, when the mind-boggling, spine-tingling adventure begins. Art instructor Samantha Williams is nearly killed by a supposedly random accident, but it doesn't take long for the doubts to arise. Could she have been a target after all?
Parks adds intricate clues and multi-layers to this fascinating story, and she also shares a strong faith message. A light romance is included but the suspense and intrigue are the main focus. There's also a historical element that left me wanting to learn more about the Hanford Site at Hanford, Washington. Fallout is a captivating thriller, and I can't wait to read more of this author's work!
I received a digital copy of this book from the author and publisher. There was no obligation for a positive review.
I see this book categorized as a thriller, but I didn't think there was enough suspense to take it up to that level. Based on this lack of excitement, the book was sort of hit-and-miss for me. I found it rather lukewarm, but certainly not cold. I called it an average read with a rather storyline that was just sort of lackluster despite pulling in murder, blackmail, kidnapping, and other various crimes. The romance angle followed a typical path and so was predictable.
An after-school art teacher Samantha) in the farming community of LaCrosse, Washington, saves her students when an SUV crashes into the school. Despite the police showing up, they don't seem t o take a great deal of interest in her or her statement. Her car and personal items are destroyed or lost which forces her to bunk in with a stranger that showed up in pasting. The stranger is a reporter investigating a couple of found bodies. The reporter is a female with personal ties to the cases she is looking into which might have rung some bells, but Sam just didn't hear them.
When the driver of the car that crashed into the school is found to have been shot and the passenger hospitalized, the level of police concern fails to ramp up. Even though the driver and passenger were coming to help with the investigation of the found bodies. Sam, determined to solve the case becomes the suspect and goes on the run, circling back to the crime scene she seems trapped in a hamster wheel until the end.
Another A+ offering from Carrie Stuart Parks! This captivating, suspenseful mystery drew me in with the dramatic beginning and kept me engaged throughout the story. The cleverly constructed plot is replete with unexpected twists and tied up neatly with a satisfying ending. The diverse characters are well-developed and compelling. I could relate to the endearing heroine’s love of children’s books and jigsaw puzzles. Her literary quotes and references are delightful. Detailed descriptions of forensic art and facial reconstruction are amazing and add authenticity to the read. Interesting history is woven seamlessly into the narrative. A gentle faith element and a dash of romance add to the enjoyment of the reading experience. I totally enjoyed this book and recommend it especially for fans of mystery and suspense. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley with no obligation to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is a suspense thriller with action from beginning to end and credible, likable characters. Samantha Williams is an art teacher when her life goes crazy with a runaway car, shootings, car chases and other things that endanger life and limb. There is a hint of romance that adds to the story but it is not totally evident until near the end. The plot is wild, with research that makes it believable and scary at the same time. Carrie Stuart Parks writes with a fast pace and twists throughout that make this book one not to be missed and haunting in its scope of reality. This is a dynamically written page turner that had me on the edge of my seat and reading fast to get to the satisfying conclusion. This book offers an insightful look at motives for murder and is thought-provoking, with a foundation of faith that the main character relies on. I loved Sam’s “Sneetches” that she seemed to blurt out whenever some common sense and wisdom needed to be inserted. This brilliantly written and complicated novel was so clever, with a tight plot and head-spinning layers that had me guessing who could possibly be so evil as to wreak so much havoc. I guessed incorrectly multiple times, so the big reveal was an eye-opening surprise. Fans of mystery, suspense and thrillers will enjoy the complexities of the novel and get lost in the heads of a strong female protagonist who is as smart as she is talented. Samantha William's life is turned on its head when a SUV crashes through her classroom wall, sending Samantha on a quest for answers about her shadowed past.
A fast moving suspense, with one thing after another coming at Samantha, who has had her whole life upended and is surrounded by strangers. Who can she trust? There is so much going on in this book, it kept my head spinning with one thing after another, as Samantha races to find answers before it's too late. Sam has been through a lot in her life, and I liked that she keeps cool in tension-filled situations, encountering people in her life that show her true kindness.
Overall, this is a high octane suspense, with a fantastic plotted that kept me glued to the pages. A tension filled read, with non-stop action, and a heroine that is easy to cheer for throughout. I liked that Dutch listens to her, and takes her concerns seriously. Highly recommend!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Fallout by Carrie Stuart Parks is a complex mystery with plenty of twists and turns to keep readers intrigued. Samantha Willis finds herself smack dab in the middle of a mystery with ties to her past. A car crashes into her classroom full of students. Her life pretty much falls apart, and she has no money, ID or place to stay after the crash. She meets a few strangers, including Mary Thompson who is looking for her wayward husband, and Dutch Van Setter, an anthropologist working for Clan Firinn. Sam has to figure out who she can trust and who might be trying to kill her.
I love Carrie Stuart Parks for her quirky characters! You’ll never have boring run-of-the-mill characters in one of her novels. Sam is definitely the quirkiest, and it makes her all the more likable. I like that Clan Firinn comes into this story (I think it was first mentioned in Woman In Shadow) because it’s an interesting concept – it’s a retreat/rehab center that works with former military/law enforcement who suffer PTDS among other things.
The mystery is complex and filled with danger. The only thing I did struggle with was that the pacing was a bit slow. It was hard to connect everything together until about part way through the story. However, the author takes seemingly random events and weaves it into a fabulous tale with creative characters and an intriguing mystery. Just a warning for fans of romantic suspense, there wasn’t much in the way of romance…fine by me, but I know some readers may look for this. All in all, if you are a fan of complex mysteries with even more complex characters, definitely check out Fallout when it releases 9/13/22.

Samantha Williams is living a quiet life when everything is upended after a car crashes into the school where she is working. When her identification disappears along with her purse and all those other important pieces of documentation, she’s left with no where to go until she is offered a place to stay at Clan Firinn along with a woman she met at the accident site. There she meets a hunky PhD, Dustin “Dutch” Van Seters and there is an instant mutual attraction. Before she can focus on romance, however, Samantha needs to figure out if the target is really her and why.
I just was not able to really get into this book and nearly put it aside. The characters seemed banal and insipid and I never felt that the actions of Samantha were believable. The plot was a bit thin and all the connections so hard to find convincing. I should have passed as it just didn’t have what I was looking for in a suspense thriller.
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson for this e-book ARC to read and review. I see that others liked it a lot more than I did.
From the moment the SUV crash into that school classroom until the words "the end", Carrie Stuart Parks had be sitting on the edge of my seat. It was like riding one of those rides at the fair - fast, fun, and you never want it to end. But end it did, and boy did I take a breath. First of all, I had a clue about the whodunnit of the story, but when she put it all together it was like a huge light bulb moment. And that's what I love - Stuart Parks doesn't just say oh so and so did it. Nope, she has Samantha recap how she came to that conclusion, like piece by piece. All suspense authors need to do this, because it allows readers (well me anyways), to think back over the story and see if we remember those moments and had the same reactions. BRAVO!
Suspense fans will devour the latest from Carrie Stuart Parks. It is fast paced, filled with suspense, twists and turns, and just a great story to read. I highly recommend picking up your copy today! I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
