Quick read, cozy mystery with a romance set in southern Louisiana. Loved the characters and the animal rescue angle. Very chaste M/F romance features a bi hero and undecided (pan?) heroine. 3.5 stars.

Enjoyable Mystery . . .

Taylor Bourque, a veterinarian tech, was never listening to her best friend ever again. She was standing in front of a gutted house where she was supposed to have her job interview. It was under heavy reconstruction. There were no windows installed yet, and she heard the power tools and hammers inside. A post board identified it as “St. Martin Animal Sanctuary”. But it was far from ready to take in animals. She was starting to think this was a big mistake. However, she had bills to pay, student loans, and needed to get out of her current private practice job due to the apathy of the pet owners as soon as she could. Sierra, who had come out onto the porch to greet her, invited her in for a quick tour.

Austin was handling his uncle’s estate and a ton of paperwork. The hardest part was finding a place for his uncle’s gigantic elderly tabby. He took a leave of absence from his high school baseball coaching job to settle the estate. He was already missing tryouts, but the assistant coach sent him stats and video of the tryouts. He was referred to this animal sanctuary, but he could see they were not even open yet. But Liz and Sierra took him back to see the “potential vet tech” who was standing in the middle of the room with her eyes closed. When she opened them, startled, he was speechless. Then introductions were made. The ladies asked Taylor to examine the cat… as her “audition”. Austin agreed to hold Tink on the table since there were no windows in place yet, but he doubted the huge 20-pound cat would run.

Taylor notices Tink’s collar and recognized him from her jogging. She said the cat had a matching harness, but Austin had all of Tink’s belongings and there was no harness. Who would have taken the harness? Taylor and Austin begin to uncover more clues that might cast suspicion on his uncle’s “accidental” death. And being together more, they both feel their connection becoming stronger. Austin is leaving soon, though. Can they find justice for his uncle? And are they ready to walk away from each other?

I thought this was a really sweet book. I liked the mix of romance and mystery. And frankly I loved the little giant cat (because pets!). Taylor and Austin and worked well together and were an easy couple to root for.

I have not, nor did I need to read book 1 in this series. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This book had a mix of romance and mystery, but the balance felt off. The romance was the main focus, while the mystery was more of an afterthought, even though it seemed like it should have been a bigger part of the plot. It wasn’t a bad read—there were enjoyable moments! But overall, it didn’t stand out enough for me to immediately recommend it.
