Major Everett Wayland is stunned when his brother is murdered, making Ev the Duke of Camden. The shy duke meets a matchmaking beauty of the ton who, while unsuited to be his duchess, promises to help Ev find an appropriate woman to become his wife.

Lady Adalyn Porter is not easily intimidated and is a leader in Polite Society, occasionally matching couples together. Her cousin, Tessa, has made a love match and has a new baby, causing Adalyn to rethink her stance on marriage.

When she agrees to find a stodgy duke a bride who is dignified and unapproachable, Adalyn has no idea what she’s in for—especially after the dull duke kisses her—and she finds he’s not quite what he seems.

Will Ev convince Addie that she is everything he wants—and didn’t know he needed?

A serious duke who has been shattered by war. An opinionated beauty with no interest in marriage. A kiss that should be wrong but is more than right…What a great story! Alexa Aston knows how to create captivating romance with characters that are realistically flawed - bringing them together with the perfect partner and soulmate. This is an opposite’s attract story with a blend of “when the spare inherits” and marriage of expectation. This is an entertaining story with low level steam yet full of feels. I recommend reading the series in order for the most enjoyment. As always I adore every book of hers that I read and eagerly await the next!

EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING!!

Way too much Angst!! I really thought I like Lady Adalyn Porter from bk.1 in the series. But in her own story she becomes a shrew in constant disagreement with Everett Wayland Duke of Camden.

I don't like stories were there are constant misunderstandings and conflicts between the couples. Situations that can be simply explained with a quick conversation. I did like Everett!! I am not sure I will be reading Owen and Louisa's story!! I like stories that make you feel good and happy for the couple!! Debating with the Duke doesn't do that!! It weighs you down!! I almost didn't finish!

Finding Love

I am enjoying this series about "Second Sons." The war scenes in the beginning were good. Adalyn and Everett were great characters. Since opposites attract, they were perfect for one another. Look forward to Owen's stiry.

I received a copy of this from NetGalley and this is my freely given opinion.

I was glad to see that Adalyn was the heroine of the story; I liked the relationship between the cousins in the first book.

This is the story of Adalyn and Everett, the new Duke of Camden. He was the shy friend from Eton, to Spencer, from book 1. His brother was murdered by cutthroats while he was in the army and he left the field to become the new Duke. After learning to manage the estates and his homes, with the help of Spencer and Tessa, he is aware he has a duty to marry and continue the line, and has a specific idea of what he wants. He thinks, because of his incredible shyness, that he would not be able to find a love match like Spencer, and concentrates on what he thinks will make a good duchess and mother.

On meeting Adalyn and Louisa, cousins of Tessa, he decides that the outspoken, bold, popular social butterfly Adalyn is not for him, and that the quieter Louisa would make a suitable duchess. However, ultimately he and Louisa are not attracted to each other, and he cannot deny his physical attraction to Adalyn, despite fighting it hard.

Their relationship is hampered by miscommunication, and misunderstanding of each others wants/needs in a partner, as well as some rather silly lies/fibs. Adalyn is a bold and outspoken woman, but I can empathize how Everett, who is very shy and a bit socially awkward, could be put off by her. But opposites can attract, and perhaps the intent would be that they could bring out the best from each other; Everett could temper Adalyn's exuberance, and she could help him out of his shyness. In general I did enjoy this story and am intrigued by how the story would go with Louisa... but there were just some things that did not sit right with me - chief would by the ruse by which Everett convinced Adalyn to marry him with to begin with. It seemed contrived and deceitful, and ultimately unnecessary; why not just admit his attraction to her and propose, rather than force her hand and compromise her?

The second book in the series of five close friends who are all second sons & have joined the army. It could easily be read on its own but I love the author’s books so would recommend reading Spencer & Tessa's story first. I once again read this delightful, captivating story in a sitting, it ticked all the boxes for me. A shy gorgeous hero, a feisty heroine, electric chemistry, misunderstandings & assumptions all made for a book I couldn’t put down. Ev & Addie are perfect for each other & both fall hard & fast after they kiss but verbal communication isn’t their forte so misunderstandings & self doubt creep in. Have I said I just loved it?

Fun and enjoyable read from this excellent series by Alexa Aston .
These second sons are all fighting for their country against Napoleon, but as their predecessors die they are forced into the limelight to pick up the mantle of the family titles.

Everett in now a Duke after the murder of his brother, but he needs an heir and for that, a wife.
His final choice is the lady who’s helping him in his search, Addie.

This is a lovely book , it’s got a very romantic feeling throughout and it’s just a great story.
The characters have a magical chemistry and it’s easy to see them together. A really good read.

The second of the Second Sons comes to the London season after his brother's demise to find a bride.

Of course, Addie is at her matchmaking task this season, but does it really help or hurt in finding her match.

What I really liked about this romance was that opposites attract. Ev is reserved and shy and Addie is outgoing and bubbly. Of course I spent the whole book wanting for them to tell eachother how they feel about the other, but that is what kept me reading.

I read the previous book and liked seeing other characters return. It was nice having some background, but I think this book could read fine as a stand-alone too.

I'm excited for what the next book will be! I think Owen getting his story will be entertaining knowing his very outgoing personality.

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me a copy of this ARC for my honest review.

Another second son must sell his commission and return to England. Everett, Major Wayland, is the new Duke of Camden. His first move is to seek the help of one of the Second Sons of London, Spencer, Earl of Middlefield. While Spencer is willing and able to help teach Everett his duties as a duke, his wife, Tessa, has plans of her own, to find Everett a wife. Either of her two cousins, Adalyn or Louisa would be perfect. Everett does not believe he can find love in a marriage. He thinks he should marry a lady with his own personality, quite and shy. Vivacious and a leader of the ton, Adalyn longs for love. Everett tells Adalyn that they do not suit, but he regrets his quick judgment when he falls in love with her. He needs a plan to make her his wife. Once again Everett goes into battle. The second book in the series is just as much fun to read as the first. It is pure romance.

Your heart knows

Ev Aka Everett has a list and ideas on what his Duchess should look like and behave.
Adalyn Aka Addie Ev’s own nickname for her is completely opposite to his list.
Addie has decided to marry because she wants a baby like her fiend Tessa.
These two initially do not like each other Ev decides on another and realizes duh they do not suit even with a kiss.
Addie finally agreed to assist Ev with his bride but she wants him for herself. These two kiss like fire and Gasoline.
The way these two marry seems like all hope for HEA are lost.
Ev is a true hero he makes a romantic gesture that makes him my new book boyfriend! What a man! 👏🏽 👏🏽 Bravo

Dull, inconsistent and starts showing more grammatical errors than the first book

The way that Adalyn is described does not match how the dialogues are written. Seems very dull and tedious for an interesting character.

In the first book, Spencer lived across the Earl of Uxbridge that allowed him to meet Tessa so how come Louisa and Adalyn has to take a carriage to visit complete with long dialogue to complete journey.

Not impressed with the second book in the series. Dialogue needs livening up.

I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher via NetGalley. This in no way impacted on my view.

Lady Adalyn Porter has been a leader in society ever since her come out, and though she's had many proposals in the past, she's always turned them down, and rather found matches of others instead of herself. But following her cousin, Tessa's, wedding and baby, Adalyn is looking for her own family. When Tessa and her husband Spence bring the newly minted Duke of Camden around, ready to introduce him to the ton, Adalyn is shocked by how dull he is, until he kisses her. Major Everett Wayward never wanted to be duke, and was happy in his military role, but fate has brought him home, and he's determined to marry quickly, and to the perfect duchess, but while Miss Louisa Goulding may be that person, Everett can't stop thinking about Lady Louisa.

This book was everything I wanted for Adalyn, after meeting her in book 1. Adalyn was a very confident woman, beloved by the ton, but inside she had a vulnerable side, and her hopes and dreams were ones she could never wish for. Her and Everett were completely different personalities, but together, they opened the other up to seeing more of life, and shared more with each other than they ever had before. There were a lot of moments when the couple could've solved their issues by simply talking about them, but everything was right in the end, and I couldn't be happier with the ending. I hope book 3 is Louisa's story, she deserves to find love like her cousins have!

I've read several books by this author on KU but this one didn't resonate with me because, and I can't emphasize this enough, NOTHING HAPPENS. The hero isn't "shattered by war". In fact he's "shy" and "bashful" but not in a sexy beta hero way - in a totally plain cold oatmeal way. He is not competent in any area of life. Apparently he's amazing on the battlefield but we never see it since he is . The murder of the brother evaporates as a plot point. Maybe I missed the resolution? His name was Mervyn and he dies solely so that that the MC could get a title. Nothing happens with respect to this murder. It's not even a controversy in society - just "oh it's the new Duke of something or other whose brother was murdered..." No one asks him about it. No one asks him about his time fighting Napoleon. He seems to have no opinion on the war. He has no nightmares. No plaguing injury. He doesn't have a nuanced viewpoint on the transitory nature of life and love as a result of his years spent fighting and his brother's murder. He doesn't delve into the heroine's personality to understand and appreciate the unique position she's carved out for herself. The heroine isn't all that opinionated (as mentioned in the description)- she just has an understanding of the most rudimentary rules of society in regency England that ANYONE would know and be able to share with the Duke. She knows things like when to send flowers, what hours are the proper calling hours and the perils of dancing with a woman more than once at a ball. Why a younger son, who seemingly spent his entire adult life prior to joining the military, wouldn't know any of this is beyond me. Anyone who has read more than 3 Regency romance novels knows these things. In addition, since there is little character development of either MC,

Tropes
Regency Era, Steam Warm, Historical Romance, Season/Marriage Mart, Ton Society, Titled Hero, War Hero, Shy/Recluse Hero, Virgin Heroine, Soldiers, Matchmaker, Married in Scandal, Opposites Attract, Sudden Nobility, Miscommunication Issues

The Plot
I thought the plot was good; I was disappointed that there wasn’t more about Everett’s brothers murder or more conflict with Lord Rosewell or with the betting book with Adalyns name in it. I was hoping any of those would lead to the climax of the book. The miscommunication or lack of communication trope has always bothered me, even in movies or tv shows, but I won’t judge a book on that score as it’s a personal issue.

Ev smiled gently. “I just do. And I plan to find those places which will bring you the most pleasure, Addie. That is my job as a husband. Everything I do, I do for you.”

The Heroine
Adalyn was in no rush to get married; she enjoyed being young, going to parties, the theater and dancing. But watching Tessa get married and have a baby changed something in her and she decided this season she would find a husband. She is known among her friends as a matchmaker and helps members of the ton find a good match. Although she is drawn to Everett, she know they would never suit, especially after his list of qualities he wants in a duchess are opposite of her!

The Hero
Everett Wayland, Duke of Camden, is a second son and was never supposed to be the Duke. But when his brother is murdered, he has to leave the battlefield and return home. He is very shy, reserved, and of course, having been ignored because he wasn’t the heir, he has no idea how polite society works! He wants to find a wife that will give him children and then they can go their separate ways, just like his parents marriage. But once he meets Adalyn, he realizes he does want a faithful wife, many kids and family. Not just an heir and a spare.

“I found what I was looking for in you, Addie. You are everything I wanted and didn’t know I needed. I want to hold you forever. Stand by your side and be the joy to your heart. I know I am not the right man for you. That you deserve one much better than I am. But I hope my love for you will convince you that I will do my best to always meet your needs. “My life began that day we met. I would be nothing without you.” He paused, his eyes filling with tears. “Do you think you—”

The Steam
There was one or two steamy scenes, lots of passionate kisses though!

Stand Out Moment
I thought there wedding night was very sweet. Adalyn was truly ignorant about the wedding bed and he was so sweet to her.

When Everett Wayland hears that his older brother has died, and he is the new Duke of Camden, he knows he is wholly unprepared. Luckily, he has the support of his friends, but he knows he also needs a Duchess. Lady Adalyn Porter is a matchmaker and cousin to the wife of Everett’s best friend, so when they meet, she agrees to help Everett find a wife. However, as Adalyn sees her cousin and her husband with their new baby, Adalyn begins to see that she wants the same in her life, and Everett might just be what Adalyn never knew she was looking for.

Everett and Adalyn have such a great opposites-attract romance! When they first meet, Everett is looking for a wife, and he promptly realizes that Adalyn is not what he wants. Adalyn is vivacious and extroverted. She likes to socialize, and people seem to gravitate to her. Everett wants his duchess to be cool, composed, quiet, and dignified. He tells Adalyn this, and they even make a list of the qualities he desires so that Adalyn can help him find a wife. However, the more time they spend together, the more Everett realizes how much he enjoys being with Adalyn.

Both Everett and Adalyn struggle to reveal their feelings, but their chemistry is palpable. Of course, misunderstandings and insecurities stand in their way. Everett is quiet and shy and feels he isn’t good enough for Adalyn. She is witty and respected in the ton, and Everett barely knows the rules of polite society. I like how this pair learns that they are a complement to each other, and I couldn’t wait for them to finally reveal their feelings to each other. Plus, their banter is fantastic, especially when they tease and challenge each other.

The story highlights issues that were very relevant during the time, many of which are still relevant today. Feelings of worth, complicated family dynamics, the brutality of war, the gratification of having loyal and supportive friends, and the societal pressures one faces are all addressed in the book. It makes for an interesting and thought-provoking romance.

Alexa Aston is such a great historical romance novelist, and I always enjoy reading her stories. The characters are compelling, as are the plotlines, and the romances are always super swoon-worthy! I also like that the characters from the first book have roles in this book. I loved Spencer and Tessa and was eager to see how their relationship was progressing. However, if you haven’t read the first book in the series, you can totally read this one as a standalone.

There is a thread of tension that runs through this romance that keeps the plot simmering. News of the death of Everett Wayland's brother reaches him after a particularly vicious battle, forcing him to return to England to take up his responsibilities as the Duke of Camden. Reuniting with one of his best friends, Everett is introduced to Lady Adalyn Goulding, a self-declared matchmaker, a role that he finds appalling. So sets the tone of their initial interaction with one another. Everett is far more enamored with Adalyn's cousin Louise, only belatedly realizing that there is very little spark between them. Thinking that Everett has somehow hurt Louise, Adalyn takes umbrage, and upbraids him, leaving him no option other than to quieten her by the only effective means he can think of, thereby discovering that there is definitely a spark between them, one that threatens to ignite and rage out of control. Everett is quiet by nature, but also very shy, making it difficult for him to navigate society and the rules that come with his new role. Adalyn and her cousin set out to give him the assistance he so desperately needs, making him realize that the sooner he finds a bride the better off he will be. Adalyn, on the other hand, is vivacious and has successfully swanned her way through society for a number of seasons, but she too feels the stirrings that come with seeing her cousin with her new baby, leaving her longing for her own home and family. Unfortunately, misunderstandings abound between the stubborn couple who almost ruin what could be the most perfect match of the season by misconceptions and assumptions. Fortunately, with a little bit of advice from their friends, they find a way through the confusion. I received a copy of this well-written and romantic novel as a gift through Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.

The second book of the Second Sons, it only took a moment to be transported back to this group of wartime friends. As Second Sons, they had all accepted their way was a life at war while their older brothers held the family titles. But like Spencer, the Earl of Middlefield, Everett’s brother has now died leaving Ev to sell his commissions and take up the title of the Duke of Camden. With guidance from his friends and an unlikely new attraction, he agrees to the help of Lady Adalyn in making a match. But he quickly discovers, that despite what he thinks he wants, only Addie speaks to his heart. The love story to follow is rocky, but true love always wins out in the end.
I thoroughly enjoyed Ev & Addie together, they each seemed to bring out the best in the other. Sadly, they too fall to the widely misunderstood, that communication is the key to happiness. A love story of opposites attract is destined to be rocky, but alls well that ends well. And Ev & Addies love story does indeed end well!

I’ve read these out of order and loved the others. This one made me mad. I was totally loving it and into it, until about 70%, when the hero became TSTL. He lies to the heroine and then traps her into marriage. He knowingly makes a misunderstanding, never clears it up and then wonders why things aren’t going well.

Our hero : I like her and want to marry her. I’m going to lie to her and trap her into marriage. I can’t tell her how I feel or just ASK her. No reason, really. I’m just not going to. Now she’s distant and unhappy, but I’ll be damned if I ask her about it. I want to be with her and I love her, but I’m not going to TELL her. I wonder if that will fix it. I know! I’ll send her away. That will make her see things clearly. She still seems unhappy. I’m still not going to ASK her about it or try to TALK to her. I’ll ask her friend.

When a story drags a misunderstanding out for too long, it becomes tedious and frustrating. I usually love a shy reserved hero. I didn’t like this one at all. I’m still feeling irritated. 2.5 stars

A charming addition to this series that I enjoyed so much!

The second son, Everett had done as expected and went off to battle. Unexpectedly though, he older brother was killed and he was to step into the title of Duke. Not having any idea how to navigate that title, he first went to see his good friend and meets his wife's cousin Lady Adalyn.

Adalyn has become known as a matchmaker for the ton. But know she is ready to settle down and find a match of her own. Upon meeting Everett, she thinks him a little stiff, but feels a buzz of attraction. Of course he has specific ideas about his future duchess and it doesn't include a lady like herself! He wants more of a calm, soft spoken lady and that is definately not her.

But when the arrow hits, what can one do? A tension filled journey to love that is well worth the reading every word!

The perfect match

I love this book, #2 of Alexa Aston's Second Sons of London series! Actually, I love all of Alexa Aston's writing. This series is based on boys who became as brothers when they went off to school at a very young age. All being second sons, basically neglected by their families as they grew up. Book #1 was about Spencer's unexpected career change and book #2, this one, is about Everett, the shy one of the original three boys, and his very unexpected rise from being a major in the army to being a very unprepared Duke. Debating with the Duke is filled with much humor, A clueless man and a very vivacious darling of the ton! Highly recommend the entire series! ❤❤

He just became Duke after his big brothers death . He was in the army and he had no knowledge about what is required from him . His best friend try to help him by introducing him to his wife cousins . Because he is shy his first thought is to make his Duchess the shy cousin but his heart wanting the outspoken one . I loved that they both wanted the other and they would change how the behave so they would make the other happy .
I received this book from netgalley and the puclisher as an arc . Thank you . All thoughts and opinions are my own .

Debating With The Duke is the second book of the Second sons of London series. This is a wonderful series that takes a different point of view of nobility. First sons are the heirs, second sons go into the military, thirds sons the priesthood. These books center on second sons that formed a friendship when they were away at school and then in the army. One by one they are to step up to do their duty to the title for which they were not born to undertake and are ill prepared to do the job.

Being in the army is all Major Everett Wayland knows and is stunned when his brother Mervyn is murdered, and informed he is now the Duke of Camden. Feeling he has a lot to learn he immerses himself in the responsibility but knows nothing about stepping into society to find a bride in the dreaded marriage mart. Ev seeks out the help of one of the Second Sons of London, Spencer, Earl of Middlefield. While Spencer is willing and able to help teach Everett his duties as a duke, his wife, Tessa, has plans of her own, to find Everett a wife. Either of her two cousins, Adalyn or Louisa would be perfect. Based on his experience with his parents, Everett does not believe love has a place in marriage. He thinks he should marry a lady with his own personality, quite and shy. He meets Louisa and Adalyn and immediately dismisses Adalyn as she is too opinionated and hoydenish. Louisa on the other hand is shy and quiet so she will be his choice. Louisa does not agree since she is intimidated by him. The meeting is off to a rocky beginning.

Adalyn longs for love and decides it is time for her to marry. Everett tells Adalyn that they do not suit, but he later regrets his quick judgment when he falls in love with her. Everett decides to use Adalyn to help him find a bride and makes a list of qualities for a bride. Disappointed as these do not describe her at all, she agrees to help him. Everett puts himself in her path every chance he gets to get Adalyn to change her mind, but she can not forget the list. Everett compromises Adalyn so she has no choice but to marry him. Adalyn becomes cold, quiet and matronly thinking this is what she should be so he will love her, but Everett can't figure out what has happened to turn into someone else. These two will have a lot to learn before they can be happy.

I really enjoy this series, it is fun and entertaining. The characters are interesting and very likeable. I like the struggle these characters go through to find love and a happy marriage. Even though they are all so different, they have so much in common that makes this friendship an important part of the story.

Debating With the Duke by Alexa Aston is the second book in the Second Sons series. His brother had always been a monster so it was not a surprise when he was notified of his death at the hands of a murder. That made him the duke, a position he did not want and was not equipped for. Everett, the new Duke of Camden had been in England for several months, earning how to be a duke, before he sought out his friend, Spencer, Haddock, Lord Middleton, and his new wife. He liked her immediately and she set about preparing him for the season. There was so much he needed to know if he were to find a wife, a duchess. To that end, Tessa hosted a small dinner part, just family, including her two female cousins. Ev was immediately taken by one of them; she would make the perfect duchess, but when he visited her they discovered, mutually, that they were destined to be friends. He then decided that Adalyn, the other cousin, who purported to be a matchmaker, could help him find a wife. As they made up a list of desirable attributes, their overwhelming physical attraction took over, but both realized it could never happen again.

This was a case of two people who both thought they were wrong for the other, coming together in a most entertaining way. Ev was quiet and shy; Addie was the opposite. Nothing about her was on his list of desirable traits. Yet, he was in love and figured out a way to force the marriage. She spent the first several weeks trying to be what he wanted. He couldn't figure out what was wrong with her; where was the woman he loved? It was an entertaining ride, watching them finally come together and figure it out. He turned right, she turned left. It took a little outside interference to make them wake up. It was fun!

This is one of my favorite author's because her writing is amazing and pulls you quickly into her story. This one was different than the usual stories I love.

The H just came into his title of Duke and was at a loss how to act as one. He is very shy but is comfortable as a officer and being around his close friends. He must sell out of the military and seeks the help of his best friend how to approach this new aspect of his life. His friend is also a member of the Second Sons troupe, whose story was book 1 of this series.

What didn't make sense to me the H has no idea how a Duke is to behave, or what any of the rules are in Society. But, he knows how a Duchess should act and seeks that in a wife, didn't make sense he would know this. Which is his downfall in more ways than one.

The h is in no hurry to marry until she sees her close cousin with a baby and now she yearns for a husband and family. She is somewhat of a matchmaker with the Ton and that is how the H seeks her help. But, the h is all wrong according to what he wants in a wife. She is bubbly, confidant and knows who she is.
Slowly she realizes she wants the H as her husband and this is where they are both dishonest in their true feelings with each other.

I liked the H and h in the beginning but I didn't like how they were together. If they would only be honest with each other I would have felt a better connection to them. This story only has one villain who has a small part so not much drama. There is lovemaking, within marriage - heat level 4 out of 5.

This is a stand alone story but does have cross over character's from book 1.

I am looking forward to the next story in the series because the character's seem likable and would be well matched.

No cheating, no cliffhanger for our couple, an epilogue 6 mos in the future, HEA, little on romance and a small amount of steam. (ljb)
