I really loved the first 80% of this story. It made you feel good how most of the characters were written. It felt true to the era. It was a delight to read. I was prepared to give this story 5 stars up until I got to close to the end. There is a brutal attack on the hero Spencer Haddock Earl of Middlefield. He was beaten nearly to death. By 2 thugs and the Earl of Ellington. The Earl of Ellington gets off with a slap on the wrist because peers can't be imprisoned or hanged. At the least the author should have written a greater punishment for Ellington then being shunned by the aristocracy. She should have sent the thugs that restrained and help beat Spencer to beat up Ellington. Ellington told his thugs to kill Spencer. So just being given the cut direct for Ellington was not enough of a punishment for the crime.

So the ending of the story ruined the story for me. So 4 stars instead of 5!!

Two strong intelligent individuals that had rough times growing up came to experience their first season. Of course they stumble upon eachother and start getting acquainted before the season starts.

I definitely could feel for Spencer growing up as an ignored second son and Tessa missing out on several years to herself in tending to her ill parents. What I liked was both characters having a brave nature and valuing eachother equally including their intelligence. Tessa was definitely way ahead of her time for a female in all of the sharing of history and what she had learned. Of course that is what drew Spencer to her so much.

This book is a slow burn romance. Tessa really spends so much time denying her connection to Spencer and really tries to push away his pursuit. The only part I wished had been a little different was how quick Tessa flipped the switch from being difficult to head over heels in love. I would have liked a few more encounters that showed her coming around to Spencer, but leaving a little more suspense open.

Overall, the likeable characters really make this book enjoyable. Even Tessa's cousins are very likeable matchmakers that help move the story forward. This is the first book in the series and I have some guesses where the next book might go given the book ending. I'm excited for the next book!

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for providing a copy of this ARC for my honest review.

Spencer Haddock second son of the Earl of Middlefield was seven when he was sent away to school there he met two boys who became close friends, when the three of them went to university they made friends with two others. These five second sons joined the military. When Major Spencer Haddock’s father dies, he returns to England as the Earl of Middlefield. He seeks a typical ton marriage, where his wife will provide him with an heir and possibly other children and then they go their separate ways. Lady Tessa Foster delays her come-out for several years in order to care for her ill parents. Now out of mourning, Tessa is eager to be introduced in Polite Society so she can find a husband and start a family of her own. The start of a new series & a thoroughly enjoyable starter. I loved both Spencer & Tessa, he's the strong, valiant soldier who isn't comfortable amongst the ton, she’s the loving, intelligent daughter. The chemistry between the pair sizzles, the complement each other but she thinks him arrogant. He falls hard & fast for Tessa but it takes her time to realise how she feels. There’s a villain who gets his just desserts but I wonder if he may raise his head again! A very well written book which I devoured in two sittings finishing it just into the small hours. I can’t wait to read Ev’s story
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

Spencer, Earl of Middlefield, formerly Major Haddock, is in London for the season to find a wife. Lady Tessa Foster's come out season was delayed due to her father's illness and death. Once in London with her family, Tessa does not expect love for a good marriage. A chance encounter during an attempted robbery, conviences Spencer that Tessa will be his wife. Only Tessa does not think Spencer is the type of husband she wants. He is determined to change her mind and it starts with a kiss. Someone else thinks Tessa should be his, but will have to go through Spencer first. What a hero! I give him a #10.
I already love this series after just reading this first book. It should be an interesting ride reading each one.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.

I like this author generally and this book isn't bad. I liked the characters but the plot feels nearly identical to her Dukes Done Wrong series. Very similar in feel to the soldiers and soulmates series and not in a good way. Feels like a lazy and tired trope. Not a bad read but lots of better choices out there.

London 1813

Now that he had inherited the title he never thought to own, he needed a wife. One that would produce as many children as possible, and he would spend time with them, unlike his childhood growing up. Love was never expected.

She was finally to have her season, after spending years taking care of her father, as he lay ill, and then moving into her uncle's home.

When the unexpected happened and he met his neighbor across the street, "she appeared like Boudica, Queen of the Celtic Tribe...tall and lithe, with golden blond hair and piercing blue eyes."
Oh yes he had met his match!!

The start of this new series it simply fabulous, and I cannot wait to read the rest of the stories!

Love it

I have thoroughly enjoyed this story from beginning to end. But with Alexas books I don't seem to get disappointed. Just like with all of her other books this one has characters that absolutely lovable and characters who come together to help the hero and heroine realize how much they love each other along with them. I definitely look forward to the next book in this series.

Thanks to NetGalley for a free copy of this story for review; this is my freely given opinion.

This is my first time reading Alexa Aston and I am happy to add more of her to my "to-read" list!

This is the beginning of a series about the (forgotten, neglected, over-looked) second sons. It starts out with Spencer Haddock, the second-born son of the Earl of Middlefield, arriving at his new school. It is obvious from the beginning that he has no connection with his father and brother, who is the favoured heir, and 10 years older than Spencer, so they have no real relationship. His mother died when he was only 2. At the school, he meets other second sons, and they start to build their own family of friends.

Move forward to 1812, and we meet Lady Tessa. She is the daughter of the Earl of Paxton, almost on the shelf, but still not yet made her come out. Unfortunately as she came of age and was about to make her debut, her mother fell ill. As a loving and dutiful daughter, she delayed her come out to care for her ill mother, who unfortunately ended up passing away. Shortly after, her father suffers a severely debilitating stroke, and lingers for a number of years. Her uncle, the heir to the earldom, takes over running the estate, and marries a young ambitious bride, to continue to line. They are more engaged with advancing their interests and awaiting the earldom to come their way, than in being supportive family for Tessa and her ill father. She stays at home to care for her father until he passes, when she is in her 20s. In the opening stages of her grief, she finds out quite viciously from her loving aunt that she is also to be turned out of her home with no care to her future, and the new earl and countess want nothing to do with her. Luckily she has more supportive and loving relatives on her mother's side and she is taken in by her uncle Uxbridge to live with him, his wife, and their daughter, Adalyn, who is like a sister to Tessa.

After sacrificing so many years to being a dutiful daughter, and after her official mourning, Tessa goes to London to make her official debut, at the advanced age of 23-24. She is also coming into her own as an independent, intelligent woman, after years of being a caregiver and giving up her independence, and delaying her hopes and dreams. Their neighbour is the new Earl of Middlefield, Spencer Haddock. He had entered the military to serve, but became the heir after his brother suddenly died. He refused to give up his commission when he became the heir, but was forced to return when his father passed away. He had to learn to manage to earldom, and has decided he needs a wife to continue the line.

He and Tessa meet one day, walking in the morning, when he comes upon her being mugged. He thinks he is coming to her aid, by physically attacking the mugger... but that turns quite sideways rather quickly and he earns her ire instead. But he is impressed by her strength and boldness and endeavours to meet her family and learn more about her. She finds him overbearing, and presumptuous and does not wish to be courted by him, but the more he gets to know her, the more he appreciates her and wants only her to be his wife.

The period of Tessa being a caregiver does not take up a lot of the story, but I was taken by how the author spoke about burden of being a caregiver; it was quite poignant the description of Tessa's shrinking world and the loss of relationships. This resonates with me because it is something that is commonly seen in terms of caregiver fatigue, and loss of friendships and supports for caregivers in the modern day, especially for those caring for loved ones with chronic illness, or enduring illnesses. It really touched something in me. I also enjoyed the contrast in the family relationships. I was glad to see that Tessa was able to have a loving family after being so terribly treated by her uncle and aunt, and that other relations treated her so well. It emphasized the lack of family connectedness Spencer felt, and his yearning to be a part of a family, with her. I also like how he learned to love her for her independence and intelligence and respected that, even though she still read his behaviour as arrogant and overbearing. But one could read it as a his passion for her and desire to be with her (swoon).

I quite enjoyed this story and Spencer and Tessa's rather bumpy road to their HEA. There was some challenges in terms of some male pride and showmanship that ended up with Spencer in a dangerous encounter, but it served to highlight how much Tessa cared for him and how much of a lioness she ultimately can be for those she loves. I can just imagine if someone does or says something against her future children!

4 stars out of 5 for me and I do look forward to reading more about the other second sons! The next story is about the cousin, Adalyn and I do look forward to it!

Summarily evicted from the only home she has ever known upon the death of her father, Lady Tessa Foster is relieved to find a ready welcome in the home of her uncle with her cousins in London. With the upcoming Season, Tessa is determined to find a husband and have a family of her own. An unexpected attack whilst on an early morning walk brings their neighbor and the new Earl of Middlefield to her rescue and he is astounded to find the young lady turn on him when he thwarts the would-be robber wielding a knife. There and then Spence determines that Lady Tessa is the only woman for him as he recognizes in her a kindred spirit and a woman who has all the makings for his partner in life. Tessa is less than pleased at Spence's optimism and attempts to deter him at every turn. However, as Spence gathers support for his foray into the world of courtship, he discovers that not all is fair in love and war and has his work cut out for him. I enjoyed this well-written romance, which is the first book in a new series that promises to bring adventure, romance, and loyal friends together. I did find myself becoming frustrated at Tessa's hard-headed approach, but fortunately, Spence's persistence pays off and when disaster strikes, he discovers that Tessa is everything he could have hoped for. The novel comes to a happy conclusion, opening a way for the rest of the second sons to find love in a world that is often harsh and cruel. I received a copy of this romance as a gift through Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.

Alexa Aston can do no wrong!! Her stories are amazing and each one showcases her exceptional writing talent. This is book one in her new series, Second Sons of London, and she starts the series out with a bang!

I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher via NetGalley. This in no way impacted on my view.

Returning to England following the death's of his father and brother, and learning he is the new Earl of Middlefield, was a shock to Major Spencer Haddock. As a second son, he never expected to inherit, and was sent away to war as a dutiful son. Now Spence knows he needs to restore the estate to its former glory, and find the perfect countess, and beget an heir and a spare, before it's too late. He thinks it'll be easy to attend a few society events, find a wife, and then go their separate ways without too much intimacy or feelings, but when he meets Lady Tessa Foster, and realises that she might be the one for him.

This was a really quick book, and perfect for those who've enjoyed Alexa's other books. Tessa was the daughter of an Earl, and had delayed her come out while caring for her ill parents. Now orphaned, she's staying with family in London, and plans to take part in the Season to find a husband, and start a family, sooner rather than later. She doesn't wish to be a burden on her uncle's family, and has no aims of love, just wanting to be content. When Tessa and Spence meet, it's not the best of first encounters - rather, Spence plans on protecting her from a thief, and she turns around and attacks him, and takes the thief (a girl) home to be her new ladies maid. I loved how the chemistry and relationship between Spence and Tessa progressed naturally, though it was quite a slow burn romance. Tessa took her time in accepting that Spence could be interested in her, but once she did, it was clear they were meant for each other. Tessa's cousins Adalyn and Louisa are definitely bound for their own stories, and I look forward to reading their romances.

I have never written a review on goodreads before so bare with me. I feel like I’m crazy for giving this book two stars. I saw all the rave reviews discussing the intelligence of the characters and I just…didn’t get it? Was I reading the same book? I found everything was spelled out to us. our heroine going from independent to hanging on his every word. The conflict felt so out of place. Characters repeating the same sentiment over and over again. Yes Spencer went to war and it changed him. How many times do I have to read that? Yes Tessa had her parents die and had to delay her come out. How many times do characters have to tell me this? Tessa being able to run the museum. I was told this like 5 times and it came to literally nothing. The back and forth from the characters felt fine in the museum setting. That I did enjoy. But Spencer relentlessly going after Tessa when she made her feelings known was weird. I normally really enjoy this authors work. I devoured her last series in days. I’ll continue the series because I’m hoping this was a fluke but I still have to give it two stars.

Summary
Tessa’s father passes way after years of being bedridden and she is off to live with her uncle. She meets their neighbor Spencer, Lord Middlefield and he is smitten. Tessa is adamant that her and Spencer aren’t a match, but Spencer is determined and make Tessa his wife. He realizes the simple, mild mannered wife he thought he wanted will no longer do and he works to convince her that he is worthy of her. Slowly, she comes to realize that Spencer isn’t the person she initially thought he was and realizes she is falling in love with him.

Tropes: War hero, Bluestocking heroine, Marriage mart, Ton society, Virgin heroine

The Plot : Tessa and Spencer are in town for the season to join the Marriage Mart, but under different circumstances. Tessa is done taking care of her dying parents and ready for her come-out to meet a simple man to start a family with. Spencer is looking for a mild-mannered wife to give him heirs and then go their separate ways. But fate has other plans and clearly neither one knows what they NEED. I love a storyline where the hero just falls head or heels in love with the heroine; it just makes my heart soar! Spencer knows he has to convince Tessa of his worth and he certainly does that!

The Heroine : Tessa spent the last five years nursing, first her mother until she passed, and then her father. When her father passes, she is forced from her home. But she is ever the optimist when she moves in with her Uncle and prepares for her debut in society. Tessa is a smart, kind your woman and I was so happy she found her happy ever after!

The Hero : Spencer was basically ignored and raised alone. He is the second son, so he went into the military and only came home after both his older brother and father died and he was to become the Earl. Spencer is just the sweetest ever and I love that he set his cap for Tessa and let her know he wasn’t giving up until he had won her heart.

The Steam : A few steamy scenes but not as much as I usually see in Mrs. Aston’s books.

Stand Out Moment : The picnic in the country when he pleasures her, declares his love and she finally says yes to marry him!

Who Would Like This : Anyone who loves a man who knows what he wants and won’t stop until he has her love in return! Swoon!

Final Thoughts : Another great book by Mrs. Aston who never cease to charm her books into my memories! I am excited to continue with the series!

This has been sitting in my Kindle since March. I can't. It is so atrociously bad. Paper thin characters. Stiff dialogue. Nothing, especially behavior, is historically accurate. The plot is so trope-y and contrived you cringe with every page turn. The absolute worst are the names. Abra? GTFO

Educated by the Earl is the first book in Alexa Aston’s new historical romance series, and it follows Spencer Haddock, the Earl of Middleton, and Lady Tessa Foster. Spencer is a disregarded second son who has recently and unexpectedly inherited an earldom. New to London society after a lifetime away from home, first in school and then in the military, Spencer is in search of a wife. Tessa has spent the last years caring for her ill father after the tragic death of her mother. Because of this, Tessa delayed her coming out and is now in London and entering into society. When the pair meets, sparks fly, and Spencer begins to realize that what he initially thought he needed in a wife isn’t actually what he wants. Can he convince Tessa that they are each other’s future?

Tess and Spencer are wonderful characters, and they both have interesting and complex backstories. They are both so strong and intelligent, and they share many interests. However, they are also very different. He’s very methodical and rational, and he is not usually ruled by emotion. He is led by his head, and she is ruled by her heart. However, Spencer’s growing feelings for Tessa change him.

I loved the romance between Tessa and Spencer. Their first meeting is so not what I expected, and Tessa really stands out as a compassionate, brave, and fierce woman. She challenges him and stands up to him, and I think that’s why Spencer finds her so intriguing. Tessa is not as impressed with Spencer as he is with her, and Spencer has to work hard to woo her. Initially, she finds him arrogant and not to her taste, though her feelings change as she spends time with him. All of their interactions are filled with great banter and a lot of sexual chemistry, as Tessa fights her feelings for Spencer, and he methodically tries to win her over with his honor and sincerity.

The secondary characters are really interesting too. I love Tessa’s maid, and I’m eager to learn more about Spencer’s friends and Tessa’s cousins. And the antagonists, though not as fleshed out as some of the other characters, create some intense situations and obstacles for Spencer and Tessa and add a bit of suspense to the story.

I think this is a great start to the Second Sons of London series, and I love that each book is a standalone story that can be read in any order. I would definitely recommend the book to readers of historical romance, and I look forward to continuing the series.

I have never read two more determined individuals. Lady Tessa Foster had set aside her season to care for her parents in their illness. Postponing her come-out for 5 year. Now a Lady of 23, she resides with her uncle surrounded by love. But she is determined she wants a quiet, peaceable man who she can live in peace with as her own parents had. Love was not something she thought she needed, but simply respect and care. Lord Spencer Middlefield, grew up as a neglected second son. Having lost his mother young and his brother being 10 yrs older, he never experienced familial love at home. He created a family for himself when he went away to school, bonding with new ‘brothers’ and eventually building a career for himself in the army. When he finds himself the new Earl, he heads to London to find a bride. Content to never have love, but wanting a lady who will give him the children he desires. He vows to love his children and raise them differently than his own upbringing. But he does not believe in romantic love so that need not apply to his bride. But neither of these two can deny their growing attractions.
I loved that Spencer knew his feelings so early on, showing his determination to win Tessa’s heart. Where she saw conceit and pride, I saw devotion and love. He was so sure of himself because he could not imagine a life without her. Their story was one sweet devotion, loyalty and strength. Tessa was truly a warrior in her own right. The story of their meet-cute was such a compelling one as it showed her strength from the start. The intrigue near the end added a new element, that was inevitable. It once again allowed Tessa’s strength of character to shine. She was truly a remarkable heroine.

What a great story. Just an overall great read.

I thought Spencer and Tessa were perfect for one another. He was ignored by his father and older brother when he was growing up. As a second son he was obligated to join the military where he found close friends who became brothers. Tessa delayed her "Coming Out" to care for her sick parents. She was reluctant to accept him at first because he was so dominate and commanding. Loved both of these characters which were very well written. Would recommend this book to a friend.

I've read better from this author...

Just okay for me. I struggled to connect to the characters in this one sadly. Their romance seemed extremely forced and didn't have that deep connection I was hoping for. Too much hot/cold and mixed signals. I found the heroine especially tiresome.

The writing is good and I liked the potential this series has, but this one fell short.

This book starts with a meet cute like no other.
Thea is immensely annoyed at Spencer’s audacity, and Spencer’s attention is captured by a fiery, intelligent woman with a big heart. From then on the two have a whirlwind of a love story with a few bumps along the way.

If you are looking for a story that is sweet with a hint of spice, has that insta-love factor, and is low angst, then you are in for a treat.

I struggled to get through this book. It started off promising, but quickly took a wrong turn. The writing was... hard to read. The characters were boring, instantly forgettable. The dialogue was cringeworthy. The side characters so quickly became enamored of the love interest, for what? Punching a girl? And the heroine was so annoying. She was so against the love interest, and then changed her mind because everyone else wanted her to.

Honestly, my biggest problem with this book was the dialogue, that's it. They said the same things over and over. Wow, she's so selfless for giving up her youth for her parents. Wow, he's so brave for being a soldier and talking nonstop about his friends. Honestly, save your time, read anything else.
