Ruth Rogers, Baroness Rogers of Riverside, CBE, is an American and British chef, renowned for owning and running the Michelin-starred Italian restaurant The River Café in Hammersmith, London. Born Ruth Elias in upstate New York, she grew up in a politically active household and was influenced by her parents’ left-wing politics. She attended Colorado Rocky Mountain School and later studied design at the London College of Printing.
In 1969, she met architect Richard Rogers, marrying him in 1973 after his divorce. They spent time in Paris and Italy, where Rogers' work and the culinary culture inspired her love for seasonality in cooking. In 1987, Ruth and her partner Rose Gray opened The River Café, which became known for its authentic Italian cuisine. The restaurant, designed by her husband, gained significant acclaim, and its cookbooks became best-sellers. It has also trained celebrated chefs like Jamie Oliver and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall.
After Gray’s death in 2010, Rogers continued to run the restaurant, maintaining its prestigious Michelin star. Her work has earned her multiple honors, including a CBE in 2020 for services to the culinary arts and charity.

Firstly, just to note that the tagline of this book could be misinterpreted. It's a book for beginners, which could include kids, but the presentation of the contents is adult orientated. The format is a unique combination of art and cookery. The first half of the book consists of pairs of photographs. Each pair features one of the fifty recipes in the book, accompanied by non-food image, which reflects the recipe photo in some way, making you think about the colours and textures of the food.

The recipes are very good and ideal for beginners. Accessible ingredients, simple instructions. At the bottom of each recipe is a reference to the photo in the first half of the book so you can see what it looks like. Similarly, the photos in the first half of the book have a reference at the bottom to the appropriate recipe page. I have to admit I missed these references at first and they are really helpful so the book is useful as a cookery book as well as an art book! As it's the River Cafe, the recipes cover all sections of the Italian menu so it's easy to find something everyone likes (including kids!). This feels like a good source of regular staples that will always please. I'm fairly sure a good number of these will feature regularly for me. Perfect for lovers of art, food and simplicity.
