Things are in such a bad place right now.
No, this is not a surprise to anyone reading The High Republic Era but when once we had hope now we are tasting and embracing all the tones of despair and desperation there are. And none of that has ever cooked something good before.
Cornered is not quite the right word for how things are right now but it's close enough to be serviceable. Weathering attacks from all sides the Jedi are straining to keep themselves together and be the dependable force that the galaxy has come to know and be used to.
They are not doing that too well.
Between all the internal conflict and all the pressure and heat from the outside, I'm honestly surprised more things aren't going terrible. But, I'm sure, we're about to remedy that with a good helping of terrible decisions.
At least we finally figured out what was going on with Sskeer I guess.

I... just don't know where this series can go anymore. It's in a pretty grim place right now.
Quite honestly, I am genuinely scared as to what is going to happen next.

The High Republic #12 manages tell one of the most intense snippets of High Republic-story and for that, it doesn't need the presence of any Nihil or the action scenes we usually get to see a lot of. In fact, with its focus on the Jedi's self-doubts and struggles, this issue is one of the best this series has to offer. The end of the issue leaves me satisfied, albeit with great concern for the characters and the consequences of their questionable decisions. It remains to be seen just how the comic ties into The Fallen Star and whether the plots impact each other - I for one am most excited to see what is going to happen next and I hope that all of our beloved Jedi escape trouble as unscathed as possible.
Edit: as I've read The Fallen Star by now, I now know how the stories are likely supposed to interact. I won't change my review though, as these were my original thoughts before the book released.

It is hard to believe that The High Republic has only been in our lives for twelve months. In that time, we have had two waves of novels and multiple monthly issues of comic adventures. While the novels have given readers so much to savor and analyze, some of the best storytelling can be found in the Marvel and IDW comic book runs that have kept us tapped into the era in between book releases. Jedi Knight Keeve Trennis has endured quite a bit over the past year twelve issues of the comic run, from nearly losing her Master to being tested to now, being the sole survivor of the Nihil’s deadly unknown terror. Through it all, she has persevered, though through it all we have the knowledge that something grievous will eventually befall her, if Dooku: Jedi Lost is any indicator.
Tensions are high and even the best and brightest, like Avar Kriss, have reached their wit’s end in the wake of the Republic Fair and the continuous losses they are dealt by the Nihil. With waning faith, Cavan Scott is setting the scene for what will undoubtedly be mass heartbreak in the next wave of The High Republic.
On Xais, Avar Kriss is unable to use the Force to thwart Lourna’s escape, delivering yet another crushing failure for the Jedi. When they return to the Starlight Beacon, Avar butts heads with Stellan Gios who reminds her that the Council has recommended caution, where she wants to assault Lourna Dee and the Nihil. Their conversation is rather illuminating—given what we know about Avar Kriss and her predilection for strong-arming situations, it comes as no surprise that they would mince words over whether the Nihil have attacked the Republic or the Jedi. Throughout the entire run of this comic series, we’ve seen a much broader picture of how the Jedi are an extension of the Republic, much in the same way that, historically, religious institutions were used as an extension of the ruling class.
One piece of good news—as I previously theorized—is that Ceret and Terec are not dead, despite the dire nature of the previous issue, but rather they are trapped in a hibernation trance. We also learn that Ceret and Terec are not the only “lost” Jedi, as Maru cautions Keeve to keep an eye on Avar, who he believes is not listening to the Force, but rather following her own emotions and feelings. Oh, how the mighty have fallen.
For the better part of Marvel’s The High Republic, Sskeer has been facing the after-effects of the Drengir attack and now we see just how devastating that attack was on his psyche. After the loss on Xais, Avar Kriss relieved him of his Jedi duties, taking his lightsaber, and condemning him for his actions (which ironically was being a ruthless fighter, which she is now advocating for in the present). Keeve is understandably distraught about her Master losing his title, but back on the Starlight Beacon, he reveals that this decision was justified. Tragically, the Dengir attack triggered “Magrak Sssyndrome,” which causes Trandoshans to become aggressive. While there may be a cure for the affliction, he is adamant that his connection to the Force has been forever altered.
I cannot wait to see what Issue #13 delivers in January as we venture into the next clash between the Jedi and the Nihil. I have no doubt that Cavan Scott has been carefully seeding elements in the previous twelve issues that we’ll be able to reflect on next year. This story has been nothing short of heartbreaking at every turn and it really is a show of how skilled Scott is as a storyteller because he has been able to make readers care so deeply about characters who we have only seen twelve times throughout the year across roughly 240 comic book pages, illustrated by Georges Jeanty, Karl Story, and Carlos Lopez.

Keeve Trennis, Avar Kriss and Sskeer are recovering from the traumatic events of the past few issues. Avar, angry at herself for failing to capture Lourna Dee, is determined to attack the Nihil and bring an end to their terror - but her determination is pitting her against the will of the Jedi Council. Keeve is grappling with guilt, and Sskeer is finally ready to open about what has been going on with him.
This was one of my fave issues in this series so far! I can't wait to see what will happen next. I liked the character moments we got in this issue. Sskeer is finally revealing parts of what's been haunting him and driving him to these very un-jedi-like acts of violence. We get to see how Avar, though she appears all serene and ethereal on occasion, is really just a human underneath all that power. I love how stubborn she can be and how even she, the "best of the Jedi", sometimes allows herself to be led by her emotions. It makes her a very relatable character. Keeve was also stunning in this issue: I feel so bad for her - the girl's been through a lot - but I think what she's facing and forced to deal with shows the core of her character very well. As it often is, it's moments of danger, stress and struggle that the truth of character really comes out.
I also love the relationships and how they are developing. I love Sskeer and Keeve and their strong bond. Seeing them become equals rather than master and padawan is fascinating, and their trust in one another makes me all kinds of emotional. I also am a huge fan of the Elzar/Avar/Stellan -trio, and seeing Avar interact with Stellan is always a delight. I love the fact that they are occasionally at odds and disagree on how things should be done – it adds complexity to their friendship.
The art continues to be stunning. I love how well the artist captures the character's emotions and expressions. They feel very real and vivid.
As previously stated, I can't wait for the next issue! This series is a delight every single month, and it truly is one of the best SW comics out there. Bravo, Cavan Scott!

Probably one of the best issues yet, and I don’t just mean from this series but also out of any issues from any of the other ongoing high republic comic series too.
Very little happens in terms of plot but for once it felt like there was genuinely some character development occurring, and it was much needed. Character development is something that I’ve felt has been rather lacking thus far across the high republic; there’s been a tendency across these series to just jump from action to action with character A & B but if you switched them out for character C & D it would have made no real difference. You’d expect the same events to occur. Finally, with a bit of tension occurring between Sskeer, Keeve, and Avar, some actual personalities are growing. Hopefully, seeing as next issue seems like it will be headed back to action again, these personalities and character conflicts can continue and be allowed to develop more.

This new arc continues its hot streak, as (at least so far), the internal monologues are toning down a bit. I'm accepting that they are a part of the DNA of this comic, but I'm happy if Cavan Scott tries to reduce their use outside of the beginning (which played like a recap of sorts so the reader could understand whats going on in the story).
We got some really good developments with Sskeer with some insight as to what has been going on with him, as well as the fact that I liked Keeve Trennis in this issue significantly more than I have in the last several. The reduction in the internal monologues was a big help, but she also has a more defined role here as a voice of reason between Sskeer and Avar Kriss- who herself is going through some unexpected character development of her own.
I can't wait to see what happens next!

"It was okay." - 2 out of 5 star rating.
A hard 'sag-in-the-middle' issue that mostly deep dives into the minds of Avar, Sskeer, and Keeve, as they struggle with current events mentally.
While interesting conflict management between the 3 characters, this issue does absolutely nothing to drive the main story with the Nihil forward, minus a single page where strategy of 'what's next' is discussed. Having Lourna Dee on the cover holding a lightsaber looks cool... but is some serious false advertisement.
From a character development perspective, this could be 3-star worthy... however, from a let's drive the story forward, ya - totally a 2 at best.
Looking forward to seeing what Lourna Dee is up to and how things are going to go down in No-Space.

Nice twists.
Interesting how the tables have turned with some of the characters, i liked it a lot. This issue was pure dialogue, and it was needed. A lot of things happening at the same time and my guess is that shit is gonna hit the fan so hard. Issue #12 is a slow burn, no action at all and a lot of character development, probably one of the best if it wasn't for the art, awful thing.
Overall: Awesome, almost perfect. But the art is so bad that made me fell to the dark side. SO bad that i have to drop one star because of it.

One of the best issues in the High Republic series. The dynamic between Keeve, Sskeer and Avar is very well done. This issue is not about fight scenes, but about inner conflicts in a very differentiated way. Cavan brought this depiction of inner conflicts and the blurring boundaries between light/dark/good/evil to mastery in the audio drama Tempest Runner, but it’s here as well, although he had much less room for it.

I really like this series. The whole idea of the Nihil is so interesting. I’m worried about Avar and Keeve and Sskeer. I don’t know if there should be some leniency for the Jedi, but I feel there are expectations, moral and emotional, for them to live up to that are impossible to maintain as a human. The Force is a power that should be handled with care which is most likely the reason for strict regulation, but I still worry, especially knowing the fate of the Jedi.

The first thing is the order of which to read this. I would recommend reading this after The Fallen Star.
I’m not much a fan of the first half, though it fills in what Lourna Dee is up to. The second half about Marchion Ro’s origin and explanation of the things attacking Jedis was great. I think Marchion Ro is an interesting villain because so little is revealed about him, so it was great getting some backstory and explanation about him and his species.

Wow. So much tension. Avar is angry at Sskeer, and it shows. She is really slipping from how I initially perceived her. This whole conflict is taking a toll on the Jedi. And I love how Sskeer and Keeve have a strong trust for one another, and how Avar sets aside some things by the end.
