Secrets are revealed as we begin to discover what happened in the past to lead to this nightmarish future. The Ronin meets an unexpected new ally but the Foot Clan begins an exhaustive sweep of the Bottom to find the vengeful mutant. And what role does Baxter Stockman play?
Shows more of the alternative timeline in which Michelangelo is the only surviving Turtle. This issue introduces April O’Neil’s daughter. Mostly exposition between her and Mikey. A little let down that there wasn’t more progression in the story, nothing really happened in this one. The writing and art are good and compensate for that. It would still be better if at least the flashbacks had more of a twist or at least something unexpected. Pretty straightforward plot line. One complaint is that these issues are coming out months apart. The release date was pushed out 3 or more times from the date when originally pre-ordered.
Good enough to keep going. So far this has great images. I’d consider picking up a physical copy once the whole series is released and bound into one volume. Hopefully the writing picks up in future issues.
Read issue one via Comixology Unlimited. Got hooked. Read issue #2 from my son's collection.
Not quite the surprise and action as the first issue, but I am into the story. One last turtle! Glad to have April back and let's see what this new Casey can do.
Might pick up the completed collection in large hardback once it is all done.
Continuation of the last issue, the story continues we know who the last turtle is and there some other familiar faces ;) i think the last ronin has a potential to be a good tmnt reboot. A story for a good movie. 5 ⭐️definitely
Ok so I knew from the last issue this wasn’t going to be happy. The dark series fans had wanted. Well written, brilliantly illustrated and as I said before it hurt my heart. However I thought I was ready. I’m old, an OG fan, prepared...and I was wrong. Oh I was wrong. Never has a graphic novel made me have feelings! What’s THAT about?! There’s still twists, the dark got darker and the looming ending I know is coming makes me need it more.
The moves between scenes are well balanced. There’s no “time skip” feel to it and I hope this quality keeps up. I was afraid it would go downhill after issue 1 but 2 was quite possibly better. I know it was pushed back but I don’t mind if this is what we get!
In this issue, we get more backstory on the lone turtle and how one of his brothers fell. The foot clan has reached new heights in its power over the city. This is issue is darker in color and tone than the first issue!
Woah what a tonal shift, the first part of this issue was really hard to read without tearing up watching the events of the turtle’s downfall unfold. I love the use of different art styles this issue as we jump across time, and I appreciate that the team seemed to find their footing a bit more on the new character designs. The different looks for characters actually caught me off guard a bit so I went to look at the release schedule of this book in case there were different artists, and wow am I glad I get to read this all at the same time, lol. Saving Mikey at the end of the last issue brought a lot of emotions and memories back for April, and as she lays in bed at the start of this issue we find her remembering back to the night everything changed. At this point in time Casey and April were married and it seems like they were expecting a child and were planning on telling the turtles when they finally came over for dinner…but then Ralph, bloody and bruised, busted down the door and swept the table clean to make way for Mikey and Donnie with a dying master splinter in their arms. They had a truce with the foot clan but it was just broken as they led a sneak attack against the turtle’s lair, leaving Splinter in critical condition. Ralph was of course the angriest about it, ready to march out with Casey right now to take every member of the foot clan down. But then Leo caught up from acting as their back line defense to order him to stand down. The foot clan forces retreated towards the docks, and right now they need to focus on getting with Dr Lee to get medical attention for Splinter. But as the group looks around…Ralph is already gone. Ralph rushed across the city, through the subway systems, until finally reaching the docks to reach their leader…Karai. She is the mother of Hiroto, the current foot clan leader in the present day Mikey is going up against and to my surprise her general design looks a lot like Elektra, lol. I have to hand it to Ralph, his untethered rage got him quite far as he fought through most of the foot clan to get to Karai by himself. I never realized how handy their shells were until I saw arrows pointing out from it as Ralph continued to fight on, until he was finally able to tear through enough soldiers to goad Karai out to face him herself. The battle seemed evenly matched and as Ralph tossed her into the water nearby, it seemed like he would have the upper hand…but she turned it right back around on him. In the chaotic scuffle under water she was able to grab a blade from his side and then stick it right through the bottom of his head. Killing him on the spot and drenching the water in his blood as he sank and she swam back up to the top. Last issue we got a brief look at Karai as she is with her son in his tower in some kind of stasis pod.
As April gets up we find out that she has robotic prosthetics for her left arm and right leg. As she struggles to get them on she jokingly looks over to Casey’s mask to ask for a little bit of help. During this time we got and check on Mikey as he prepares tea and continually talks to the spirits of his brothers living rent free in his head. One reason I am so glad the mystique around who the last ronin actually is was dropped so fast is because it felt like the personality of the turtles were lost in the mystery. Without knowing who was talking I couldn’t properly give a voice in my head to the text, but now that we know the truth the shadowed visions of his brothers has been given their weapons and some color into their mask to tell them apart. Mikey is surprised that April is alive, the last thing he remembers was the giant explosion, which is where she lost her arm and leg. Mikey couldn’t remember anything for days after the explosion and it’s clear it has left a lasting impact on his mind mentally. Aside from seeing his brothers he is also prone to get into arguments with them, their past judgements and personalities weigh him down during his present fight to bring them all honor. He isn’t just the funny one, he was always apart of the same fights they were and now he is the only one left. But the war still goes on, and he plans to finish what Splinter raised them to do…to kill the last Oroku. As April walks in to find Mikey sharing tea with his imagined brothers, she is surprised to actually see hmm awake as he should be resting. But it’s clear that his mutation has further progressed over the years, he is bigger and stronger and he is healing amazingly fast but Mikey’s head remains fuzzy. As April proceeds to make breakfast she then calls for Casey. This shocks Mikey as for a moment he believes Casey is still alive, only to realize April was calling for her daughter…Casey Marie Jones. She is the woman who found Mikey at the end of the last issue Ashe gave up on the seppuku. She has heard about the mutant turtles her entire life, but to have one in front of her for real is a bit unreal.
For someone who refused to fight the last ronin head on, Hiroto sure likes to train and use his foot soldiers as cannon fodder to punch and slice through. Since the failure of the last captain to apprehend the mutant turtle Hiroto had him killed and has appointed a new captain, who is now at risk of the same fate if he doesn’t lock down the entire city and search it inch by inch until the turtle is brought in and publicly executed.
As we jump back to the sewer lair where the group have just finished up breakfast, Casey is itching to talk to Mikey about the underground resistance and how they can help each other, but April is hoping he can get a lot more rest before then so instead Casey brings Mikey over to the training area. Since she was a kid growing up in the middle of all of this she has been training and learning martial arts as best she could. She also brought all of Mikey’s gear she found him with in the sewers, she understands what he was about to do and she intentionally didn’t mention it to April as Mikey being here is the only bit of hope she has had in the last few years. But what Casey is really interested in is where Mikey has been all this time. As we go back into Mikey’s past post the explosion and fall of the turtles in NYC, the set style shifts to a black and white classic TMNT comic art style as Mikey made his way to some mountains. He wasn’t used to the snow and with his cold blooded body he didn’t stand a chance…so he found a place to meet his end. But his body refused to die, he started to hear voices telling him his destiny was incomplete. The climate changed around him to be much warmer and he found solitude, he continually referenced his father’s book looking for balance and peace thinking about what he was supposed to be…but then the real world caught up to him. Some men who saw him as a freak came for him and as they beat into him he almost accepted his fate, but the be looked into their faces and saw laughter, taking a life for the fun of it. They lacked honor and he grew mad enough to take them all down, that was when he realized he destiny would be found on the battlefield. His father’s book was the path, and he used it to travel around the world to master all forms of martial arts. “I was the last of my clan. Masterless. Ronin. And it was up to me to restore our family’s honor.” His training finally reached an end and he realized it was finally time to come home and complete his master’s mission to finally find peace. But as Casey looks through Splinter’s book she finds a contradiction, the last page has the words “no peace” marked into it. Mikey claims it means he still has work to do, but as Casey offers for her crew to help out with his fight…he rejects her. Both moments only going to show that Mikey isn’t looking for peace, and he knows that this fight will be his last. But Casey won’t accept this, she wasn’t offering and now that he has come and stirred up trouble he is going to accept help from all the other people who also want to take our Hiroto, whether he likes it or not. Mikey finds this funny, as he can’t tell if Casey is more like her dad…or her mom. As the issue comes to an end we see as April walks over to a slightly hidden safe where she retrieves a small robot head. This feels like something a standard TMNT fan would freak out over, unfortunately I am super casual and have 0 idea what this is, lol. Can’t wait to see more and I can’t wait to see Mikey accept help. We’ve seen how far he can get on his own and he needs it. Use your brothers as an example, especially Ralph this issue as he fought alone and died alone…you can’t do it alone.

Good follow up, I like the idea of seeing the Turtles fall as the story goes on. This one smelled a little like there could be a prequel series in the works (which I wouldn’t like) but maybe I’m just reading too much into it. This issue convinced me to finish the series even if I don’t like the way it’s going. I’m a fan of lone samurai stories and dystopian scifi futures, so what’s not to like here. I loved the drop into original art style, but I’m longing for a little more with the dialogue (less exposition, more character development, etc) But, in saying that I’m being very nit picky. If you’re questioning it, pick up the series. Also, I learned it’s only supposed to be Five issues, so that’s a +1 in the Positives column too.
An excellent second volume to this series. The pieces are being put together of what happened to his family and how he became the skilled Ronin that he is today.
It was again a little short for my liking but I found the pacing much better with the cool flashback sequences between the present day conversations. There wasn’t much in the way of story progression but I enjoyed the conversations with April and her daughter who we are just introduced to.
I really appreciated the amazing artwork in this volume too. The sequence with Raphael had some incredible shots and I liked the different art style used for Michey’s. It makes me excited for any more creative elements to come.

This issue was much better than the 1st issue. The story is much more engaging, has a certain sadness to it, aand it delves more into what happened in the past. I had an issue with the art (especially the fighting) in the 1st issue, and now i know for certain why. I much prefer Ben Bishop's art style and fighting dinamic than the Escorza brothers rendition. Bishop does the past while the Escorzas do the present story. Also nice addition, for a few pages, from Kevin Eastman (depicting a period in the past).
There is a certain addition of a young female character, which might get annoying if not done right.
Overall, a step up and a much better story. Hope it continues on this path.
This is a good follow up to the first issue, providing background to the events taking place in the narrative's present, while further developing the story. It takes some of the characters from the original comics in an interesting direction, while also developing some new ones well. It also features some good dialogue.
The last book was an interesting introduction, but this is clearly the issue where we get into the meat of the story.
I’ve never read any TMNT before, so I don’t know if they usually take the story this seriously, but I’m loving the depth to this story. Its not pulling any punches and it’s definitely got me hooked. I can’t wait to see what comes next.
Hope it continues rather than dying or becoming something else. So many comics today just throw stuff at the wall to see what doesn't stick, and then double down on it. So far this is a good start though.
Loved it. A little less action with more backstory and character development than the first issue made this more personal. Dark and somber with a sprinkle of hope that feels like it's building towards heroically tragic redemption.
Big flashback time, including a chunk at the end done in the style of the OG turtle comics. I liked this issue a bit more than the first. April was cool, it was all good stuff. Made me interested to see how it all goes.
actually unbelievable in its storytelling. the only minor gripe i have with this one is how rushed raph's death was but as a whole wow...so beautiful. the flashback of mikey with the og eastman and laird artstyle was so fucking beautiful

Oldage Mutant Ninja Turtle does it again. They creative team is just crushing this concept and I can’t wait for more. It’s kinda a cowabummer but it’s too radical to resist.
