Elven Game

Monsters are swarming the world...

And it's all my fault!

The game I've been coding for over two years is finally released. And so are the creatures within and wreaking havoc in New York City.

Roman and I have to stop them.

But before we can, we have to figure out how it happened and who is responsible.

Everything I've come to know about my legacy comes to a head when we venture from the small town of Hamlet Cove into the world of monster-hunting in the Big Apple.

The rules have changed and the world is burning.

Is it too late to save it? Or will we burn with it?

Elven Game is a gay urban fantasy romance with two magical elves, a powerful baby troll, and a cataclysmic event that threatens the dimension.
Caution: This book has a cliffhanger ending!

I started this audio as soon as I finished book 1 as I absolutely loved everything about book 1! I was so excited for this one, but unfortunately it was not as great for me. This one is a lot more plot and action focused and focuses very little on the romance. I like a good plot and action in my romances but not when it overtakes the relationship.

The characters were great. Wish we had seen more of them together, not just battling monsters. And Royal. I missed him. He was in it a few times but not how I imagined. This is definitely one of those times that I would have rather just had the one story about the couple and their monster fighting abilities. I don’t think I’ll go on to read book 3. I would still recommend book 1. It’s ends with a small cliffhanger but could still stop there. Or if you’re a huge fan of plot and action I highly recommend continuing as I’m sure you’ll love it!

Interesting twists! A lot of twists, the stakes got really high really fast. And keeping up with everyone's lies gets pretty complicated at times. We get a "wait, what?", moment every other chapter

Elven Game is a fast paced, hold on to your seat, nonstop action thrill ride!! The story was freakin fantastic!! The world building was as good if not better than Elven Duty. Loved being back in Roman and Jude’s world along with Royal. I literally couldn’t put the story down. Overall, fantastic! The story was really well written, the pacing flowed smoothly, highly recommend. The story kept me engaged and I literally could not put it down. I’m voluntarily reviewing from an advanced copy that I received. My review is solely based on my thoughts and opinions.

I enjoy the bigger story more in some ways than the actual characters. I think in part because I find it very hard to distinguish between Jude and Roman's voices and which one of them is which. I know each of their backstories, but I'm often left at a loss as to which one is the one who coded the game, and which one grew up in the world of elves and fighting monsters.

Still I am enjoying the world and this book is action packed. All of sudden the monsters that Jude coded into the game he was working on before discovering his heritage are showing up in the real world and attacking. And all of them seem to be converging on NYC. Jude and Roman find themselves tossed into a world within the elves that neither of them knew existed. There's a whole elite fighting force out there and yet even they are overwhelmed with the current situation.

It was hard to like a lot of this book as so many of the elves are just plain jerkfaces. But I did like Otis and Nico has promise. I'd love to see more of them. :D It looks like book 3 is going to be action packed as well after where things ended. Looking forward to it.

monsters and magic

Ok, so that was going to be a 4.5 rounded up until that ending! Ugh. One of my more hated tropes.

That being said, there was a ton of action, danger, and betrayal, but also magic and humour. Through it Jude and Roman stand strong together.

I have to read book three as soon as it comes out!

Ohh man, I can't wait for the next book to see how it all plays out. Jude and Roman are perfect compliments to each other and were able to keep the other sane during the craziness of this story. I know Judenis trying to protect Roman but I really hope it all works out in the next book.

In the second book of the Star-Crossed series Jude and Roman go to New York City. In the NYC office they find the rules governing the Myers and Cohens are more relaxed than their hometown. They soon find out not all is as rosy as it seems. In the book, monsters Jude coded in a recently released video game are coming to life. With the help of some new characters, they figure out what is happening, but it takes longer to figure out the who. During the course of the action, Jude and Roman learn explosive information about Jude, about the Myers and Cohen feud, and about elves in general. Rhys warns readers that the book ends in a cliffhanger so be prepared. I can’t wait to see what comes next! I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes MM urban fantasy/romance.

I listened to the audiobook. The narrator did a great job with both main characters’ voices. It was easy to differentiate whose POV we were hearing.

Let the games begin!

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

When we last saw our elven monster hunters, Jude had come to a startling realisation about the new monster situation sweeping through Hamlet Cove.

But this time it's different, and Roman is able to fulfill one of his deepest desires, as our loved up pair follow the new crisis to New York City, bringing with them Jude's impossible theory.

The New York operation is a far cry from their small town one. For starters, they have fancy weapons, a never-ending supply of helicopters that fold away and no one cares about that pesky Cohen/Meyer rule.

But there's another side-- a cruel side-- devoid of heart and kindness, focused on getting things done, by any means necessary.

When Jude and Roman's rose-coloured glasses shatter, they choose to leave, not willing to embrace the NY way, despite the benefits.

But things go from bad to worse before they can even leave the building. Now it's not about leaving, it's about surviving, and Jude begins to suspect the reason for all their problems has been right under their noses this whole time.

As a solution to end the monster invasion presents itself, some familiar faces appear and the true villain is unmasked.  Yet nothing can prepare Jude and Roman for everything that is revealed, nor for the events that transpire during the final battle.

Home again once more in Hamlet Cove, our elven couple tries to make sense of everything, knowing nothing will be the same again, and their fight isn't even close to over.

*4.5*
Well, damn. That's just one book packed full of non stop action, start to finish but takes the time to still focus on the important parts of Roman and Jude's relationship and shared bond.
It did take me a moment to reaquaint myself with the characters and their story but once I passed that, we were off and running, quite literally for the MCs as they head off to help with this unknown disaster that's happening across New York. It's take Jude a second to work out why things seem familiar to him and then it's trying to convince others of something that sounds crazy but not more so than a phoenix burning down one if the most famous buildings. Roman is right there at his side from the start and the battles just keep on coming, getting more intense, with losses on both the good side and the bad. The plot twist is huge when it turns up and brings about intense anger and so many more questions. It definitely came out if left field for me and leaves you questioning the order of things, how elves are treated when they don't fit the mold. We do, of course, get more time with Royal, though not as much as we'd like!
Definitely a recommended read and this is a series to be read in order as one book follows on from the other with a series arc. There is a dreaded word for what happens at the end of this one as well (begins with a C) and I know not everyone is a fan but it makes me so much more eager for book three.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

fantastically woven tale of heartache, bruising revelations and fast paced ,white- knuckle action of fantasy warfare

Rating: 4.75🌈

The strange, tormented romance of Jude Cohen and Roman Meyers, whose families are the Elven equivalent of the the Montagues and the Capulets , continues on in Elven Game.

Jude, a game coder, had figured out in the last story, that all the monsters everyone were encountering , except for Royal, were ones he had help create for a online game.

Together, Jude , Roman, and a encapsulated Royal in a charm, head to NYC to fight the monsters.

That’s where author Lawless basically explodes a already complicated plot into shards of high action, deeply painful scenes involving family, shocking revelations about trust and the truth behind everything they thought they knew.

Grab your popcorn, because you won’t be able to put this down!

Jude and Roman are still so new in their relationship. Plus Jude is still figuring out who he is within his status as a Elf and a being who can handle the Aether. That enormous stuff.

Lawless does an excellent job with both characters, their personalities and mindsets in this incredibly stressful situation. One that with each new stage adds more pressure to them personally and to their new relationship. So well written that their emotions just pull at you!

While all that is occurring, Lawless is throwing new wild monsters to fight at our heroes, that also includes Royal in some heartbreaking scenes. As well as Addy, Jude’s grandmother and Roman’s former partner.

As noted in the description, this book ends on a cliffhanger. Sigh.

I really dislike cliffhangers. But I will say the reader will see this coming.

So after this fantastically woven tale of heartache, bruising revelations and fast paced ,white- knuckle action of fantasy warfare, I’m more than ready to wait to see how Lawless handles the finale in Elven Heir. It’s due out in August of 2022. I’ll be here waiting.

In the meantime, if you’re a lover of fantasy romance and fiction, start reading this series from the beginning in order to understand all the intricate character relationships, plot storylines, and family histories.

I’m highly recommending them both.

I like Rhys Lawless’s take on elves in Elven Duty and their latest, Elven Game. As someone who fell in love with elves reading LOTR back in fifth grade, I admire his unique version of elven magic and the caste system of elves. The reader got to see Jude come into his elven heritage in the first book and he fully embraces his magic in Elven Game. It is fascinating to see his outsider view of the very structured elven world that exists alongside our own world. The monsters Jude and Roman must fight are a clever mix of classic monsters ( the phoenix) and others that are new to me. I especially liked the setting of the book being in NYC rather than a small town on Long Island, as I once lived in Manhattan and could envision it being destroyed by monsters. Elven Game is fast-paced and the reader will wonder how our MCs can save the day. Even the cliffhanger, which I usually don’t like, is not too bad. It reinforces what we surmise and provides the hook for book three. I only have two complaints. The first is elves are supposed to be exceptionally beautiful, which the book even mentions, and the cover image is not IMHO. The second is I don’t want the series to end with the third book! I’ve always preferred fantasy to contemporary novels and especially now in our brave new world of a virus never being eliminated.

I got addicted to Roman and Jude (and Royal, can't forget Royal 😁) in book 1, Elven Duty. This book is a continuation of Roman and Jude growing relationship, growing stronger, steamier 🔥, and sweeter with each turn of the page.
Jude and Roman are not only battling monsters, trying to solve where and how they are coming to their world, but also dealing with shocking discoveries of the life/truths they knew. It is one shocker after another. They realize what they were told and knew doesn't really match up with reality. The story is full of twists and turns, taking the story to unexpected but great places, full of suspense and action. There are new intriguing characters that are introduced, which I hope I continue to see in book 3. There are some sad emotional moments but not overwhelming.
The story does end in a cliff hanger, but it doesn't make the story feel incomplete since it's the overall story that doesn't get resolved. I can't wait for the next one, to know how these new discoveries effect Jude and Roman's life.

First, I love Royal, like adore him to pieces. Second, what word can I use to describe this book… perhaps, darling. Third, can you hear me yelling at you, Rhys Lawless? Gah, is it August already because I need more Roman and Jude.

“Whatever happened out there, whatever monster came between us, we would always be okay.
As long as we had each other.”

Swoons, these two give me heart eyes. How far we’ve come since we first met them and with that ending I know there’s still lots to experience. I think I’ll just sit and soak up the intense love these two have while I recover from all the topsy-turvy action that kept my heart pounding. Maybe I’ll take up crafting as I wait to satisfy my elven addiction with the next book in this fantastic series.

You know that feeling of anticipation when you are perched at the top of a steep ramp on a rollercoaster waiting to go down? The excitement, the heart-stopping anticipation, and then the screaming as you fall? Or the way your stomach lurches as you speed through that turn? Yeah, this book is like that. (In a good way.) There is action, twists, turns and surprises, emotional moments, sweet times, and..a baby troll. (Bet you wish your rollercoaster had one of those, huh?) I love Jude and Roman and their story. I hate having to wait till August for more, but - you know - they say good things come to those who wait...

I received a free review copy from the author and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

This was nonstop action, well except for a couples of sex scenes thrown in. There are monsters and monsters and more monsters. (I really hate how they call all the creatures “monsters”. It sounds so juvenile.) iThe phoenix was a particularly clever one. It was an interesting premise. While they explain where all of the new creatures come from and why, I didn’t really get how. Maybe I missed something.

The romance was sweet and believable. The other characters are okay but I really love the good monsters especially Royal. I want him to be in it all the time.

This ended on a cliffhanger so more of my review will be consolidated into the one for the sequel.

Virtual Reality comes to life. I really enjoyed reading this story. Roman & Jude are monster hunters in their small town. Things start going a little astray when all of a sudden there are more monsters than the world has ever seen. Roman & Jude go to NY to help other Monster Hunters out. If you are looking for a great read you want to read this. It's unlike anything I have read before. The story twisted & turned & held my attention from start to finish. *I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book for an honest opinion*

This is number two in the trilogy, and I found it to be a tiny bit heavier than the first installment. We leave the small town and we go to New York City. So we suddenly have a lot more characters to get to know in a very short amount of time. Overall, it was entertaining and it moved fast. I just felt it had lost the light fun from the first installment that I enjoyed so much. But we didn’t get too overwhelmed with the elf thing so I was able to read it, in fact these are really elves in any substantial way. The action was a lot of fun and moved very fast.

Roman and Jude are back 3 months down the line from their previous adventure and are more settled as a couple.
Monsters begin appearing and they have to head to New York to put a stop to what's in motion.
A lot of action and monster hunting, a whole new crew and info on Royal - who we see plenty of.
Lower in steam because they are so busy with the plot and a doozy of a cliffhanger. Seriously unhappy with Jude and his choices so I hope book 3 isn't far away

Elven Game, book 2 in the Monster Hunter series, starts out with Roman and Jude enjoying a nice afternoon in their hometown eating ice cream. Then bad news comes in the form of a horde of flying monsters heading towards NYC. When the boys decide to head to hunter headquarters in the city to find out what’s going on the action really picks up. And a mystery I never saw coming evolves with Jude at the unsuspecting center. Roman, Jude and Royal find themselves in the midst of a storm between the hunters and a power hungry, crazy elf hybrid. As long as they are together though nothing can defeat them, or so it seems. This book ends on a cliffhanger which I usually don’t enjoy, but it’s necessary for the story. Looking forward to book 3!!

This book is a continuation of Roman and Jude's story that begins with "Elven Duty" so you definitely want to read it as part of a series. I like seeing Jude become even more comfortable with his "new" powers and understanding of the world he's part of. I also like seeing Roman stand up for himself. And of course I love Royal and Darling. This book ends on a cliffhanger so I'm ready for the next book!!!

Elven Game is Book 2 in the Roman and Jude: Monster Hunters series and needs to be enjoyed in order as it's an ongoing storyline. This is such a fascinating urban fantasy story. There are twists and turns, and lots of action as the teams fight game monsters. Roman and Jude are perfect together and I was glad to see more of Royal. I recommend this book and can't wait to see what's going to happen next.
Narrator John York does an amazing job.

There are aspects of this story to appeal to so many groups, gamer/coders, monster hunting fans, gay romance readers, urban fantasy readers who love great world building and anyone who appreciates great characters that you care about put into wild situations trying to save the world. Rhys Lawless did it again. He wrote such an awesome book as part of the Roman and Jude Monster Hunters series.

This book is action packed with some twists and turns that I did not see coming either with a cliffhanger as well.

This is by far my favorite MM urban fantasy series of his; with Roman and Jude being my favorite couple. Oh and both Royal and Darling are just oh so cute.

Now it gets serious, there’s an apocalypse coming

Elves are badass, yet their death toll is shockingly high this time, because they’ve been betrayed. Book 1 had a lot more fun in it, now it’s all gone deadly, with an intended end-of-the-world, well, the human one, caused by one seriously deranged psychopath. Humanity is doomed, there’s no HEA, not even a HFN, a cliffhanger, I need book 3 now!

Shocking Revelations.

MM, Urban Fantasy, Romance. Easy to read page-turner with a great plot that just draws you in and holds you prisoner. Not a stand-alone read as story continues throughout the series. A fantastic read with brilliant characters, lots of action and drama, emotion, angst and heat. Cliffhanger ending but next book is already available.

Overall: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Performance: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Story: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐

Elven Game is the second book in the Monster Hunter series. Since this is an ongoing story, I recommend reading or listening to the books in order.
This urban fantasy story is intriguing, entertaining, and exciting. I totally enjoyed the world building and had my fun exploring this world with Jude and Roman. The appearances of Royal were a highlight. Jude and Roman make a great couple and it's very action packed fighting the monsters with lots of twists and turns.

John York is a great choice as narrator. He did a fantastic job and he gave each character a voice to match. He has a great narration pace and brought this story to life with his pleasant voice and narration.

A crazy number of monsters have entered and they are heading to New York City. Jude and Roman head to NYC to help out. Jude is getting more and more convinced that the monsters are from the game he helped code for. This story takes a ton of twist and turns that kept me guessing! So much was packed into this story! A delightful read! Heading to book 3 to see what comes next!
