Not all great writers comes from USA. Simon Gervais is fast becoming an internationally best selling thriller author and he sure lives up to the task. The Last Sentinel is book two in his new series about ex secret service agent Clayton White. It has become one of my new favorite series and it is fast paced and thrilling with many strange twists. Some people are crazy with hunger for power and some have trouble with their family, well you get both deals in this series and then some. Great storyline and action. I really have to recommend it to all you thriller fans out there. They say the Canadians are nice and maybe so but the contents in these books aren't. I love it. I must thank Thomas and Mercer, Netgalley and Amazon publishing for letting me enjoy this great book out in stores August 9.

An old enemy of Clayton White, back from his days as a PJ in Iraq has come calling. And he apparently is willing to take out others in White's life along with him.

Another good thriller, although I wonder how the bad guy has some intel there was no way he could know.

The Last Sentinel is my first introduction to author Simon Gervais and what an electrifying introduction it is.

As this is a pulse-pounding military thriller. That grabbed me from the start and never let go.

As ex-secret service agent Clayton White is brought back into the fray. When the ship he and his fiancée Veronica Hammond are aboard is attacked at the same time, her estranged father, the Vice President and mother the Second Lady are ambushed as they arrive at a marina in Miami.

But who could want the Vice President and his family dead? The problem for Clay is he knows that list is long.

As the VP has a history of violence, dodgy military ops and double-dealing and has been known to go to any lengths to cover his tracks, just ask Clay.

But Clay is willing to put his hostility towards the man aside at least until he's sure Veronica is safe and those responsible for the attacks are dealt with.

And with compelling characters, perfect pacing, edge-of-your-seat action and plenty of twists. This is a top notch military thriller and I'm definitely going to be picking up the first book in this series as well as any future ones.

I would happily recommend The Last Sentinel to others.

Doesn't bring anything new to the table but it's very fast-paced and action-packed. What I like about this series is how well developed the characters are. Simon Gervais is a great thriller writer and if you are looking for a quick and thrilling read then I highly recommend it.

“The Last Sentinel” is Canadian author Simon Gervais’ sequel to the Clayton White series, “The Last Protector.” Book two is about ex-Secret Service agent Clayton White and his vow to protect the woman he loves who also happens to be the daughter of the double-dealing vice president. In this story the vice president who White has no love lost for, comes under attack, and calls upon White to help him track down the responsible party. White wants nothing to do with the notorious vice president and future father-in-law, who boasts a violent and erratic history. But with his fiancée’s life in the balance, White has no choice but to mend fences with the VP and jumps back into the fray, where he faces off with old and new enemies. The Last Sentinel is action-packed, suspenseful, romantic, and adventurous. Gervais tells another stellar story that kept me interested and lead me to want more. As usual, Gervais’ character development was top-notch, and highly character driven. All the characters throughout the tale were captivating and well-crafted for the storyline. Also, the plot was imaginative and strong, and full of well-placed action and violence. I also commend Gervais on creating sinister villains that not only added to the story but in a lot of ways made the story exciting, thrilling, and gripping. Gervais is adept at engaging the reader with intense action, excitement, and wonderment. And The Last Sentinel has all these attributes. Just like its predecessor The Last Protector, The Last Sentinel, with its riveting cliffhanger will leave readers wanting more. I certainly do and will continue the series with the hope that Gervais crafts book three of the series sooner than later. I highly recommend this series. Simon Gervais has quickly become one of my favorite thriller genre writers. He has gorgeously written fight scenes, great character development, and intricate plots. I was introduced to Gervais’s writing via a different series, yet when he started the Clayton White series, I could not resist to follow him to this series. Clayton White has a strong and varied background as a combat rescue officer and as a Secret Service agent. He is deadly smart and an individual you do not want to cross!

The Last Sentinel is the second installment in this series, and it picks up shortly after the end of the first novel. White is with his fiancée, Veronica Hammond, who just happens to be the daughter of the Vice President of United States, Alexander Hammond. White and Veronica are on a research vessel off the Florida Keys when a terrorist attack is launched on the ship. At the same time, Veronica’s parents are attacked as well. Conclusions are drawn that it was a hit on the VP and his family, but as White and the Secret Service start to investigate, things are not as they appear.

After the events of the first novel, White finds it difficult to trust the VP, and he questions him at every turn. However, what both men can agree on is their shared love for Veronica. She is what brings them together to figure out who is behind this. Is this a foreign county looking to even a score, or is it a loan wolf attacker? White must figure this out before it is too late.

I really enjoyed The Last Sentinel. It had a great plot that started from White’s past that had a terrifying reach to the present. I really enjoyed that we had our clear cut villains, and then we had villains who are not obvious from the start. Be prepared to not fully trust who is good and who is bad! Jump on the Clayton White series if you have yet too, and if you are an already established fan, get ready for a ride in The Last Sentinel!

The last Protector was a big hit for me.

I was looking forward to seeing where the author is taking Clayton White next.

Greediness can come off in various forms and ways, more for some, and sometimes, it is intertwined with family drama and other twisted mindsets.

In this second instalment of the series, we get to interact with so many unpredictable and unexpected turns, I would say. I just couldn't believe the length of some people they will go to achieve that power.

The story is fast-paced from the beginning and never ceases till the last page. It's suspenseful, with some romance elements and as expected some violent scenes. But that's what it actually makes it a stellar read.

Powerful, intriguing and twisted, that's how I would recommend this book.

WOW! Simom Gervais has done it again. This thriller is fast paced and action packed with plenty of twisted plots. This is book 2 of the author's new Clayton White series and its even better than book one. And OMG! That ending, blew me away.

This story picks up where book 1 left off, so definitely read these books in order. Can't wait to get my hands on book 3. Hoping the wait isn't too long. Highly recommend this series.

Captain Clayton White had no idea that his trip to Iraq to train elite forces in battlefield evacuation strategies would be curtailed by a direct order that would eight years later create danger for the Vice President of the USA, his fiancé, a journalist, Clayton, and several others. Following orders is what soldiers do…even when they don’t realize the repercussions those orders might eventually incur.

What I liked:
* Clayton White: retired from the military and the secret service, engaged to Veronica Hammond, enjoying his life while guarding the woman he loves
* Veronica Hammond: Vice President’s daughter, business owner, tech savvy, interested in doing what is right, on the outs with her father
* Part I: tells why Clayton, Perez, Veronica, Hammond and others are being targeted for assassination
* The plot, pace, setting, and writing
* The strength shown by Veronica and other women in the story
* The relationship between Clayton and Veronica
* Sarazin: French spy and operative from book one who shows up in this story, too
* The International intrigue
* That the bad guy(s) were thwarted even though there was loss of good lives in doing so
* Thinking about what it must take to be willing to put your life on the line for someone else
* That the darker aspects of the story were not entirely glossed over
* Wondering what would make one man seek revenge for the murder of his father and another man be angry but not seek justice
* That I felt I was there in the story
* That the bad guys were not all male and did not come from only one country
* Thinking about how the twist at the end will impact the lives of the characters in book three of the series
* All of it really except…

What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to
* Knowing that all of the evil in this story is plausible and probably very close to true…

The plot advances the characters swiftly, keeps things straightforward, and progresses quickly. I appreciate it in a good thriller. Simple, quick, and enjoyable. Fun action adventure thriller.

Simon Gervais Isa hellava writer. The Last Sentinel is an action packed thriller with phenomenal characters and plenty of twists and turns to make this a quick read. I've read everything Gervais has written and they've all been great. The Sentinel is no exception.

While aboard a research vessel with his fiance, Veronica, the boat is attacked. At the same time, an attack is launched on his soon to be father-in-law, the Vice President. It seems like someone can't forgive and forget. Putting their differences aside, Clayton and the VP must work together in order to keep Veronica safe and figure out who is attacking them and to stop any further attacks.

The Last Sentinel has action out the wazoo but I think the real objective was to delve into Clayton's past and explore/explain the history of his relationship with the VP. And of course set the groundwork for future books.

While not as good as the previous book The Last Sentinel is a solid thriller. However, it felt a little rushed to me. Perhaps my expectations were too high.(based on other reviews it seems I'm in the minority). Regardless, I was excited when I saw Clayton White was returning

Still glowing from the syrupy praise bestowed on his work two years earlier, Michael Cimino ushered in the end of the director driven film production era by finally releasing the money and production problem plagued and dubiously labeled 'the worst film ever made' in November 1980. Leading the way as a financial disaster, the approximately $44 million budgeted HEAVEN'S GATE garnered nary $4 million in receipts, and is a far cry from the risk that modern budgeted films run. No stranger to risk and cost, the Tom Cruise hijacked franchise MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE is a veritable $4 billion global box office gold mine, and miles from the quaint days of the Impossible Mission Force (IMF) agents trudging through dangerous and deadly missions on CBS from 1966-73. Coming in hot with a cover that is reminiscent of a MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE movie poster, THE LAST SENTINEL is setting an expectation of extraordinary spy hijinx. For the gentle reader, as was for Briggs and Phelps, it's not a question of IF but when they choose to accept the mission to read THE LAST SENTINEL.

Evoking memories of the Kiefer Sutherland vehicle THE SENTINEL featuring a USSS agent being framed as the mole in an assassination attempt on the US President, and penned by former US Secret Service agent Gerald Petievich, THE LAST SENTINEL by former federal protective pro (RCMP) Simon Gervais picks right up where THE LAST PROTECTOR left off; in the backyard of the EEOB [formerly the OEOB] with family drama still taking precedence over barbeques and ballgames. The VP's got his eye on the oval, spurning his roguish and successful daughter, who's got her eye on Clayton White, who in turn has his eye on her and the ten grand of compressed carbon in his pocket, cut to a GIA acceptable shine. Charting a different course than the previous installment, the first sentence of the book, while eerily reading like a continuation of the recently published THE HANDLER's villain story, prophecies a grand thriller born in the cauldron of the Middle East. Despite being well financed, nothing good can be in store for the opening mission with designated call signs of the biggest box office bomb of all time. Too bad for the Iranians, banning Western culture and preventing media researchers to vet the names and have realized this.

All set up, the next chapter of 'White, Clayton White' races from Miami to London and culminates in the MEAN STREETS of New York. As the second outing in the series, there are, of course, two baddies bent on an-eye-for-an-eye revenge. Being compatriots, Reza, Nader, Mohsen, and Adaliya Ashtari hold a grudge like Khomeini, and are all in; the family that hates together, stays together, unless its members manage to piss off the United States of America. As such, the interests of the home of the brave are repped by the first and last line of defense in this war/love menagerie, none other than the PJ turned USSS turned personal protector of 'Flower': Captain White, retired, of course. Easily dodging the alt title GUARDING VONNIE, THE LAST SENTINEL offers a staggering daisy-chain of incidents happening to several WH staffers constantly in the line of fire while under the protection of the Secret Service. Building on details from the first novel, THE LAST SENTINEL carries on with a few slick au courant items like dermatomes, bathymetry, and the fact that the US uses more electricity for Air Conditioning than the entire 1.3 billion people continent of Africa does for everything. Moreover, the newest chapter in the White Saga adds twists and turns into every direction and has no choice but to culminate in a knife fight on the heli-pad that can only end one way. With six feet of height and about 200 lbs of refined strength and agility, Clayton White is almost guaranteed a happy ending. Were it not for yet another pesky critical emergency, setting up the biggest fight (heavily leaning on 2008's RAMBO, it appears) that will torment THE LAST SENTINEL's morals by having to take on the leader of the free world and become the LAST DEFENDER of truth and democracy.

I received an ARC and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

The story begins with Clayton in Iraq training a group of Iraqi soldiers. They are doing an exercise when Clayton receives a call to perform a specific task. This is not a task which Clayton normally performs , but because of its importance, he agrees. This mission will play a role many years later in this story.

The story now goes forward to the present where Clayton is with his fiancee, Veronica, on a ship doing a series of tasks for NOAA. At the same time, Reza the son of an Iranian, is waiting in apartment
preparing himself to kill a certain party. His task is to kill the Vice President. He has also ordered another group to attack the ship Clayton and Veronica are on. The mission related to the ship is to elinate a journalist that has information relating to a prison that will paint Iran in a bad light. Reza is not successful in his task killing the Vice President's wife instead. The mission relating to the NOAA ship also fails, but it winds up with the deaths of the Secret Service members who were protecting Veronica, the VP's daughter.

As a result of the attack on Verinica, Clayton, starts a mission to find out who was responsible for the attack on Veronica and the Vice President. His search takes him to London where he believes the person responsible is located. With assisitance by Pierre he invades the home of that person. Unknown to Clayton, this was a trap that Reza had set up. Clayton was subdued by the person of interest who provided him with evidence of Iran's involvement. When Clayton returned to the U.S. he received a call that Reza was in NYC and that he planned to kill both the journalist as well as Veronica. Clayton was able to get a hold of the Secret Service detail to warn them, but not before Reza killed a couple members. Clayton meanwhile raced to the location where he confronted Reza.

To learn what task Clayton was given in Iraq, who provided information to Iran the names of the people who took part, and how the meeting between Clayton and Reza worked out, then you need to read this book.

Iran has not forgotten the control America holds over the region and the atrocities foisted on the country by Saddam Hussein, nor has Reza Ashtari forgotten the American agent, Captain Clayton White, who killed his father. He and his brother Nadar swore to get vengeance.

The growth of America’s enemies in the area is growing exponentially as more families mourn the death of their loved ones.

China becomes involved when Reza and Nadar Ashtari approaches them for military and financial support. The Ashtari’s feel that the United States will back off when they find out that China is involved.

Captain Clayton White is in charge of protecting Veronica Hammond, the daughter of the U.S. Vice-President who is working with the NOAA aboard a surveyor ship off the Florida Keys in the National Sanctuary. White and Hammond have become very close and are surprised when three boats come to attack the research vessel.

This well-developed plot leads to very interesting places and conclusions. The author keeps the action fast-paced and the dialogue entertaining. His writing expands on the lengths that personal torture and vengeance can go. 4.5 stars – CE Williams

The Last Sentinel sees the return of Clayton White the hero of The Last Protector. Now living with his fiancé Veronica Hammond, daughter of Vice President Alex Hammond, they are enjoying a low key and for him a fairly uneventful life on board the NOAAS Surveyor in the Florida Keys, engrossed in her work. But this doesn’t last long as the boat they are on and Veronica’s father, who is in a Miami are attacked at the same time.

If you enjoy the first book in this series you’ll like this one too, it’s more of the same. It’s full of stereotypical characters and no nonsense action. The action is relentless, and White the no nonsense action hero. The story isn’t too intricate, a case of revenge as White’s military past catches up with him. It’s a fast paced easy read. I loved the way that every bit of kit, whether it’s guns, helicopters, cars, or whatever are given their full catalogue description, such as a Sikorsky MH-60T Jayhawk in which a coast guard petty officer is manning a Dillon M134D electrically driven Gatling gun that fires 7.62 mm rounds at a rate of three thousand per minute.

With The Last Sentinel as with The Last Protector you get exactly what it says on the tin. It won’t win any literary prizes, it’s not even in the same league as a Clive Cussler or a Tom Clancy for example. But it’s still entertaining and all good fun.

Non-Stop Testosterone
For those of us who love novels with strong "white knight" heroes, rocket-fueled plots, and a strong sense of justice, this one ticks all the boxes. Clayton White is a fun and fascinating character. His strength, experience, intelligence, and loyalty provide a strong platform for this man who knows too many secrets and is haunted by too many violent actions. But it's his love for his fiance, the daughter of the Vice President, that makes him genuine.

This is book two in the Clayton White series. Book one was great. This one went nuclear as an old foe seeks his long-awaited revenge and launches a two-pronged attack that no one saw coming. Now VP Hammond and his estranged daughter are forced back into the same room with a lot of bad blood between them. Hammond is unrepentant for his past sins, something that doesn't sit well with Clay.

If you're a fan of fast-paced, action-packed justice-seeking military/political novels, this series is a win. If you're a fan of romantic suspense, you'll enjoy this one as well. It's possible to read this novel as a stand alone, but best enjoyment will come from backing up to the beginning to get the full scope of the damaged relationship between the Vice President, his daughter, and a man he once considered a son.

Simon Gervais has been delivering heart pounding, action packed reads every single year. I can’t remember the last time I went any length of time and didn’t have one of his thrillers to enjoy. Whether it is Mike Walton, Pierce Hunt, or his latest in Clayton White, there hasn’t been anyone to match the pound for pound match-up that Gervais brings to the ring.

Clayton White has a past that follows him everywhere, one that might have something to do with his future father-in-law. Former head of the Joint Special Operations Command and now Vice President of the United States, Alexander Hammond has secrets that he needs to keep locked away. Those secrets have come looking for retribution and for blood.

"The Last Sentinel" is the second book in the Clayton White series by Simon Gervais. I'm a big fan of all his series, and this one is not a disappointment.
Clayton White is back to serve and protect his fiancée and his country, as well as his about-to-be father-in-law - and Vice President - Hammond who he blames for his father's death.
This time, the Hammond family is the target of almost simultaneous assassination attempts and Clayton must find the person or persons responsible and neutralize them.
Plenty of action here, as in the previous book, and more little insights into past misdeeds.
Along with assistance from one or two unlikely sources, and after a terrible loss, the assassin is brought to 'justice'.
And, as usual - setting up the next in the series - there is a surprise or two at the end.
Highly recommended for fans of action adventure, but not until you've read the first book in the series (or you might be lost).

He is spending time with Vonnie who is doing some work at sea when their ship is attacked. Her father, Vice President Hammond, is also attacked the same day, and her mother is killed. Regardless of the bad blood between them, Clayton and Hammond have to come together to figure out who attacked them and why.

Lots of good action here. Clayton, Vonnie, and her friend Emily are likable characters The story is solid, as is the writing. Overall a good political thriller.

Not family friendly due to violence.

The way I see it, there are three types of books in the thriller category:

1. The plausible thriller. This is the best kind if it’s written well because you think it could actually happen.

2. The implausible thriller. The plot in this book could never really happen, but who cares, if the bad guys are getting their rears kicked and it’s written well, let’s do it!!

3. The inanely unbelievable thriller. This book has such an inane, implausible plot, that even Jane Austen herself couldn’t salvage the book.

Unfortunately, The Last Sentinel is in category 3. The plot is so unbelievable that even I was rolling my eyes, and believe me, I have a very low threshold for believability. I won’t waste my time explaining the plot, feel free to waste your own time if you like. It is not a good thriller though.

The Last Sentinel is a sequel but I had no trouble picking it up and taking off without reading the first book. Jack White is an ex-secret service man and former military man. While training the Iraqi military, Jack was given the job to take out a top Iranian general. Now he spends his days protecting his fiancée, the Vice President’s daughter but the past is coming for him and the dirty Vice President. The Iranian general’s son wants revenge for his father’s death. Non-stop action drives a story full of violence and double dealing for a page turning thriller that leaves Jack White with a reputation for being unstoppable. I liked the way the book started and felt like there was sufficient action to keep me engaged. I would like it better if there was less focus on Clayton and Veronica's relationship. I also keep thinking there needs to be another operations-type character to partner with White. Pierre just doesn't quite fit the bill as the right sidekick for White. I thought it was going to be Perez, but that didn't work out. I did feel like the ending was a bit hurried especially in the resolution with Reza.

I'll read the third book just to finish the series. If there are more books after that one, I'm not sure I'm invested enough in the characters to go beyond book 3.

The narration is between 3 to 4 stars. Some voices are performed well, but some of reading is flat and makes the book drag.

Thrilling action book.

I luckily read the first book of this series but even so I think this one could be read as a stand alone without losing too much backstory.

I think this book had more action and excitement than the first did which was a nice change of pace. I love that Veronica isn't just a hopeless female (thanks for creating her the way you did).

I don't however love the knife fights. It seems it always comes down to knife fights 🤷‍♀️ to each their own though!

I love the ties to real life that happen in the book. I think its gives it a more realistic grasp. I've quickly fallen into the storyline and cannot wait to see where it leads.

Similar to other reviews- read the first book of the Clayton White saga first. There are several references to the first story.

I enjoy a good spy novel. The second installment by Simon Gervais is as good a page turner as the first one, and sets up for a thriller in a third story. Now- this doesn't end in a cliffhanger- but it ends with avenues to explore in the 3rd book. I felt satisfied when I finished this- but ready to read the next story.

The spy craft is realistic to me. I read some spy novels where there are elements that aren't real. I work in a profession where sometimes it's better that I'm not seen- and can generally pick up on things that would and/or wouldn't happen. That doesn't happen in the two installments from Simon Gervais.

If you're looking for a quick page turner spy novel- read the first two of this series... (and I'm likely reading the third novel in the near future).

Excellent sequel which can be read as a standalone, but is better having read “The Last Protector”. Protagonist Clayton White, former Air Force, former secret service, fiancé to the vice-president’s daughter, is constantly looking over his shoulder to see his past chasing him and those important to him.. Action-packed with shootings, hand-to-hand fights, and explosions betrayals at home and abroad keep the reader entertained. Simon Gervais lives up to the task of best selling thriller author. I discovered Gervais' writing through a different series, yet when I heard about the Clayton White series, I could not resist to follow. .Heart-stopping action with shootings, hand-to-hand combat as well as explosions coupled with betrayals at home and abroad. To keep the reader entertained and ready for the next in the series, a couple of surprises at the end.
