Her Sister's Friends

Rate this book
She always wanted everything her big sister had.

Evie Laurent grew up in the shadow of her perfect older sister, Luna. Evie longed to be a part of the “cool kids” that Luna ran with.

Luna Laurent never saw her little sister as more than a pesky tattle-tale, which, let’s be honest, is exactly what Evie was. The kid could NOT keep a secret.

Evie is all grown up now, and living with Kyle Turner, one of the cool kids. Kyle’s rebellious antics aren’t aging well, but Evie is in denial. He was her first crush, from back when he was hotter than a pre-scandal Johnny Depp.

Evie goes against Kyle’s wishes and buys a house that feels eerily familiar. She remembers being there before, at a party.

Kyle, Luna, and the rest of the gang swear that none of them have been to the house, but they can’t explain the evidence Evie finds. She’s definitely been there. With all of them.

Now Evie’s obsessed with figuring out what happened at a house party twenty years ago, Luna’s sleeping with yet another one of her therapists, and one of the cool kids may be a stone-cold killer.

The Laurent sisters are just trying to have a Hot Girl Summer, but it’s hard to be hot when someone is trying to kill you.

3.5 ⭐

This rather long, I mean long (673 pages!), psychological thriller keeps you hooked by going back and forth in time, combined with the multiple point of views trying to get to the heart of Evie's memories. As an only child I can't fully relate to sisterhood, but holy moly still bickering at the ages of 35 and 40 like they did seemed ridiculous and, quite frankly, annoyed me. It's like they were forever 11 and 16.
Kyle is written in a way that just makes you hate him. In turn, Digby is written in a way that just makes you love him.
I can't believe how much discussion there was about their parents hobby. To each their own, but it seems everyone and their mother knows about it.
Finally, FINALLY, when we're getting close to figuring out what went on it becomes a page turner. Overall, I liked it, but wish the first 75% moved at a quicker pace.

Not a likable character in the group

A group of childhood friends/frenemies with a dark secret. I couldn't find a likable character in the bunch, each a stereotype, all having some fantabulous backstory. The only likable character started as a side character, but in the space of a few months helped solve an old murder, fall in love with one of the main characters, and somehow has the money on a detective's salary to buy the newly renovated house.
I kept reading because it was like a train wreck, I wanted to stop, but I kept hoping the characters would become self aware, and more likable. Ironically, the character painted with the darkest brush turned out to be decent after rehab

This story is a well written, engaging and often funny mystery about a foreclosure house that turns out to have an almost forgotten history for a group of old friends. Untangling the mystery behind the deaths (possibly murders) of two men on the same summer solstice brings out secrets between the friends and within their families and endangers friendships and even lives as the long buried truth about what really happened comes out.
If you're a fan of mystery stories that are far from cozy but also not dripping with gore this one's a great read.

I enjoyed this book, it was however very long, it took me 2 weeks to read when normally I can read a book in several hours. It was about Evie, the little sister of Luna. She had always wanted to be part of her sister's group of friends. She was living with Kyle, one of the guys in the group. When she saw a house she wanted to flip, she kept thinking it looked very familiar, and the more she looked at it the more she remembered. So she got to asking questions, to anyone she could find and she realized something went on, she was there and they were trying to keep it hidden for some reason. That made her more determined than ever to figure it out. Lots of twists and turns, the book jumps back and forth between the past and present and from Evie's point of view and Luna's. That always gets on my nerves a little bit but it worked out ok in this book. If you are looking for a long book that has a good plot and is enjoyable this is the book for you.

I received this copy as an ARC from the author. This is such an intriguing and complex story about a young woman (Evie) wanting to be a part of her older sister's elite group of friends. But there was an incident that happened to her when she was 11 years old while she was with these friends that she can't quite remember. Evie starts asking questions and talking to people and trying to put all the pieces together to shed some light on the memory that is so fuzzy. This is an excellent mystery and it was just so fascinating to read.

You have the main character Evie, her sister Luna, Kyle - Evie's soon to be ex and several other friends. Enter the picture Dwayne Digby (Oh my!) a police detective. Also there are Evie's parents and some of their friends. A murder or two, or is it murder? Different types of lifestyles, love stories and family and friends. I really didn't want this one to end because I fell in love with all the characters.

This one’s a doozy, funny, mysterious and thrilling. I’ll admit it took me until the end to enjoy the two sisters, Evie and Luna. Although the sisters are 35 and 40, respectively, the maturity level was around junior high. The behavior and conversations between the two women were funny at first, like sibling rivalry, but it never really went away. The story goes back and forth between now and twenty four years ago, alternating between the different friends. A house brings back bits and pieces of an evening many years ago. Unfortunately the small group friends were keeping secrets which led to someone getting nosey trying to solve the mystery of that night. It’s an intriguing book with one negative, the length is one of the longest I’ve ever read. I lost interest at times because the pace seemed a bit slow but I’m glad I stuck it out. I received an early copy and wrote my review voluntarily.

This is not my usual type of book, I wasn’t sure at first whether I was going to enjoy it, but I am so glad I kept going, the story certainly gripped me I still don’t like the main characters, but I didn’t need to, the suspense got to me, I just had to find out what was being hidden and how it was affecting the sisters.
It’s a very clever book, well worth reading whatever your favourite genre is. I am still thinking about it days after finishing the book, highly recommended read.

Disclaimer: I was given a free copy of the audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

Her Sister’s Friends is about a young girl who idolized her older sister’s friend group when she was eleven and they were in their late teens. She was the annoying kid sister that would tag along with their antics.
Jump forward a couple decades and she is now in her mid 30’s, dating the hunk of her sister’s friend group and at work is given a challenge. She finds a great deal on a house to purchase, refurb and flip – however she is warned away from the house without explanation. When she visits she feels déjà vu – she has been there before but has no recollection. When she asks her sister or her friends they all resolutely deny having ever been there.
She stumbles upon physical evidence proving at least one of them had been there – but why lie about it? That is where the mystery really begins – why were they there, what happened that night and what will the fallout be even 24 years later?
The story is told in modern day (2021 recent with references to very current events) and in a series of flashbacks as little by little the truth is uncovered.
This is a psychological thriller – but the relationships between family and friends is the real heart of it. Gia Pere balances pathos with humor and heart. The story defies you to put it down. The story and its implications will stay with you.
I won’t spoil anything but there is discussion of sexuality (including teenage promiscuity), substance abuse and self harm. Almost all of these actions are “off screen” and it is never graphic nor insensitive in its depictions. If these are triggers I would suggest you stay away and try a lighter novel by Angela Pepper.
Tiffany Williams always puts in a stellar performance and no less here – giving unique but recognizable voices to characters young and old. She is always a delight to listen to.
This was an interesting book to listen to and I could definitely see value in re-reading it with knowledge of what happens to pick up on previous hints/clues and just to spend more time with these 3 dimensional characters.

Extremely long for the story being told. I never felt connected to these characters as they were so immature. Flash backs twenty five years and they all acted the same, not one character matured during that time. We never cared about the people who died during the book. Also the flashbacks did not seem true to 25 years ago. Very disappointed in this book.

audible:This was a very good book. Evy grated on every nerve as the little sister who was impossible to put off her task. She has a crush on her sisters friends when she is young. At age 11 something happens.Triggered to remember pieces of the incident when she re encounters the place it happened, she seems to think everyones secrets are hers to expose. Tiffany Williams was a great narrator, though 'Zoe Riddle' kept popping out!I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Great Novel

Gosh this was good. At first I was thinking this was like VANITY FAIRE The first novel without a hero, where every character was deeply flawed (as all humans are). However, the characters grew and changed with realization of the worth of themselves and others.
Usually time shifts confuse and annoy me but this author accomplished it beautifully. Bravo Gia Pete (Pen name)/Angela Pepper.

Her Sister's Friends was a great read by Gia Pere. Evie Laurent grew up in the shadow of her older sister Luna. She always wanted everything Luna had growing up. Evie wanted to be a part of the cool kids that Runs ran with. To Luna, her little sister was a tattle-tale. Evie is now grown up and living with one of Luna's friends, Kyle Turner. He still seems to have many of his childish rebellious antics but Evie finds herself in denial. Evie buys a house that seems familiar, even though Kyle told her not to buy it. She remembers that she was once there at a party. Luna and all her friends swear that they have never been to the house but they couldn't explain all the things that Evie finds. Evie will stop at nothing to figure out what happened at that house. I enjoyed reading this book and can't wait to read more by the author.

I think the first thing for a potential reader to know about in this book is triggers. There's a few. Domestic violence, suicide, drug use, gas lighting... like I said, there's a number of them. Consider yourself warned.

The book is marketed as a psychological thriller. There's certainly mystery/thriller components but it doesn't necessarily have the same darkness or heaviness of most texts within that genre. That can be a good thing if you're not wanting something too heavy. I think it's a story that skates across a number of genres - mystery, thriller, women's fiction and romance without necessarily finding its footing in any.

It is a long story and took me some time to get in the groove. I think mostly because the main character Evie, is a 35 year old woman with the maturity of a tween. There's an unhealthy obsession with her sister and her sister's friends that plays out throughout the book as present day Evie sets out to uncover a lie, the presence of which is triggered by fractured memory of a house that pops up for sale. The story is told from a number of different perspectives, both in the present day and in the past. Despite the number of characters, this is not overwhelming and it's easy to keep track or who is who and when it is taking place.

Thank you for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.

Wow, this is a fabulous story, full of recognizable, flawed characters that will grown on you as you keep listening/reading.

The story itself (what did really happen at that solstice party, so many years ago?) is intriguing and we are getting little bits and pieces of it through flashbacks while Evie keeps asking questions and getting no real answers. But the relationship between all of the characters is what really at the core of the story.

Friendships and romances; broken hearts and lies (to others and themselves); little betrayals and undeniable sisterly love... It's fascinating because none of them is perfect, none of them is a bad person, either. They are people trying to live their lives the best they can. This is a story about kids that, one night, made more than one mistake and about the adults they become.

I must say, I didn't see the end coming, at all. I was fooled more than once by the twists in this story, and it was done so well that I can't be sore about it *laughs*

A great mystery, really worth of your time.

This book was really slow getting into the story. The story line is definitely dragged out. This book has 61 chapters. I didn’t really get into the story until about half way through. It is really slow moving. Really good character development. Evie saw this property that looked familiar to her and she wanted to buy it to flip it. She felt like she had been there before, but couldn’t remember when or why. Everyone has been acting a little on the edge since Evie bought this new property to flip. I feel so bad for Evie because everyone looks at her as a brat. She knows there is more to the night of the Solstice party than everyone is leading on. She has to find the truth. But, she lives with her boyfriend, Kyle, who seems to be a psychopath. The truth slowly comes out about the house Evie bought. Once you got into the book, it really drove you in. It definitely didn't end the way I thought it was going to! Good read.

Evie finds out out about her boyfriend decided not bid on at work. She knows that house, she just doesn't know know why. She decides that she is going to put a proposal together for her boss. She also approaches her boyfriend about the house, she knows there is something more. Evie starts to pull information from her sister Luna and her friends. Evie keeps uncovering more clues.

All Evie wanted was to be in with Luna and her friends but she learning she didn't know her sister or her friends all that well. She is also meets an interesting new tenant to her building.

This was interesting book, there was a lot of twist and turns that will keep you reading. Evie is overall likeable. Each character is unique with what they bring to the story. You will enjoy your time reading this book

sophomoric

I felt like I was reading a high-schooler’s short story shoved into an over-extended novel. The plot was a great idea, the execution was not. The characters felt like they weren’t really grown up, as if the writer doesn’t know what it’s like to be an adult and is guessing. The ending felt like the high schooler’s kid sister wrote it after daydreaming about some fairy tale life. I kept thinking there was going to be some redemptive quality to the book at the end. There was not.

Evie always wanted to be part of her older sister and her friends group. Callie, the sister, knows what happened years ago in that house, but Evie's memory has gaps in it. It doesn't help that she is prone to making things up, so you never know what is true and what isn't. But something DID happen. It can cause all kinds of problems for the 'gang' that is all grown up, including Evie. A very interesting story from start to finish. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

A BOOK THAT WILL MAKE YOU WANT TO LISTEN.
Lovely story done by one of my favourite narrators in an easy listening voice. 15 hours of entertaining, well written intriguing story that is sure to keep you guessing. l enjoyed it a lot even though it wasn't my usual genre of fantasy. The characters were SO believable and l especially liked the boss and identified with the older sister more . The parents are a hoot, omg! RECOMMENDED

The suspense of the story line will pull you in and keep you turning the pages to find out what happened all those years ago. The characters are strong and well developed and I'll admit, they aren't all easy to like at first but they'll grow on you. It's well written and pulls you in with suspense and mystery holds your interest til you read the last page.

This was great read. I can’t wait for this author to publish more. I didn’t like the main character very much at first but she grew on me as we waded through this mystery together. As soon as I was sure I had it all figured out something new would be revealed and I was right back at square one. I love that the story truly ended, and I was left very satisfied with the way everything worked out.

That is seriously the worst book that I have read in a very long time. The writing style is absolutely adolescent and horrible. It's like nobody read the book and edited it to make sure that all of the ends were wrapped up. What a waste of time. It shouldn't even be classified in the genre. Not one character was relatable.

Not sure why this book was rated so high. Author speaks about unimportant things. None of the characters seem likable at all. Just a waste of time.

This started very well for me but then I got a little bogged down around 4/5th in.....however, it picked up more in the end and we got a good resolution all tied up nicely in the end, which I was happy about.
I'm glad I only had brothers as we never had this competitive 'edge' you seem to hear or read about having a sister. Especially one like Evie. I thought she was quite the vindictive and spiteful little cow most of the time. Especially in a scene with Kyle in a shop nearer to the end. There was no need for it, I thought, and it made her very, very unlikeable indeed for me. Whereas Luna was a nicer person altogether. I did chuckle at the parents' little habits and hobbies, although there WAS genuine love there which was good to see.
For some reason there are a LOT of gaps as she writes...big old line-spacing. So if it had been written like a regular book it is probably about 350 pages !! It is not full of errors, either, which is nice to see. Though she did repetitively write french and not French fries.
I had to google mall bangs.....not something we ever had over here and we didn't have Pauly Shore either so I needed to look him up, too.....don't think we missed too much !!
I liked what the author related about 2 people never reading the same book; that is an interesting observation.
Not sure I'd be in any great rush to read another by her as I'm not a great fan of comic books and this was a little too comedic for me. I prefer my murder to be taken more seriously.

HER SISTER’S FRIENDS is the second book in the Domestic Thrillers series. This can be read as a stand-alone psychological thriller. I only wish I had read the first book because I loved this one so much.

Mysteries tend to be either cozy (cute) or gory. This is neither. It’s hellishly realistic without the blood and guts of super-realism.

I loved this story. Going back and forth in time, but at the right times to keep the story moving forward. Filling in the blanks in Evie’s mind a little at a time, her questioning nature pushes to solve the mystery of why she feels she has previously been to a house that she bought to flip for her boss.

The relationships between the characters were what was really real. Sibling rivalry, hero worship (Evie idolized her sister’s friends when she was 11), and the disappointment of finding that the adults in your life were flawed when you were a child. We all seem to find that out when we become the failing adults!

This new penname for Angie Pepper / Angela Pepper is for her darker musings. I say, “muse away!” This was fabulous.

Narrator: Tiffany Williams is always wonderful as a narrator and did a beautiful job of creating unique voices for each character (though Zoe Riddle’s voice was in there as a new character – I guess that can’t be helped.)

The narrator is the same for both books and really does a fabulous job - 5🌟! She is one of my favorite narrators. She's a lot of fun to listen to, does a fantastic job with the voice differentiation, acting, and and I really don't have to speed up the play back.

Parents- R - YA to adult geared +17 read - drug and alcohol abuse, swinging sex party discussions, & potential triggers for assault victims (choking)
Language- PG- some but not heavy and no f-bombs
Violence- nothing super graphic
Sexual Content- R- There's a lot of sexual tension and banter, insinuations, LBGT, crossdressing, sleeping with doctors and much older men, lead up and after bedroom scenes but nothing too explicit, but definitely a enough to make it an adult only read

This was a much longer book than His Last Wife and it was very enjoyable. I loved how this was Evie trying to figure out a strangely hazy summer when she tagged along with her sister and her older group of friends. Very much a crazy/stupid things that high school kids do and then the years later after with them having to come clean. The mystery side was really well done with plenty of twists and turns and an ending that I didn't see coming.

I wasn't that big of a fan of the characters attitudes. I'm not sure if it was that they were childish or exactly what it was that I didn't like about them but it really made it hard for me to get through this story. I started it once and then had to come back to it later to finish it because over all it was actually a good story, but the way the sisters and the family interacted was just off-putting for me and took away from the story for me. The overall story was great though and I actually enjoyed it. I do wish they would have ended it a bit differently but it was still a good overall story.

Honestly, if I wasn’t so determined to not let a book go DNF, I would have dropped it. Would have given it 1 star but the mystery did leave me wanting to know what it was.

The twist was underwhelming and the characters didn’t really have any major arc or development. They were the same even after their ordeals. It felt like a draft of a book with the plot and characters still sort of scattered on a vision board.

This one wasn’t for me, but I’m open to trying this author’s other novel, His Last Wife.
