Born a hybrid in a pack of wolves, I was treated like trash by everyone except him. My love, my lust, my forever mate.
He may have been the pack runt, But his desire for me was strong. He swore he’d always protect me.
Until the day he found something he wanted more. The day he won the alpha games, and rejected me forever.
I bet he thinks that I can’t survive without him, Or that I’ll never find a family of my own. I’ll bet he wonders if I’ll ever lay with another. I would never do that to him, right?
J.L. Wilder likes wild things! Her alpha shifters are gruff and tough, with a pinch of tenderness. Curl up with these bad boy book boyfriends, and they will have you howling at the moon!
When not writing shifter smut, J.L. spends as much time as possible exploring the outdoors. She loves getting into trouble with Ace, her Siberian Husky.
This book is stupid! There are so many details overlooked and the plot is ridiculous. It’s a reverse harem and a serial, both of which I hate! The FMC is rejected by her wolf "mate" and her wolf pack pretty randomly. She had been with her pack for over twenty years and had been with her wolf mate since childhood but as mates and lovers for three, yet he unexpectedly becomes alpha and he abandons her immediately after with no conversation and no actual interference by others to encourage his rejection. He did it all on his own. His father later, after the rejection, telling him to get rid of her was simply confirmation of his decision. It was pathetic and I couldn't believe he had his own POV before and after the rejection that I would rather erase from my brain as he was an unworthy and weak character in my eyes. That's just the beginning!
Her being a half breed makes no sense to her wolf packs rejection as it never explains what happened to her parents and how she had been living with them all her life but only NOW they decide it's okay to run her off. I think this was the author's way to garner sympathy for the FMC but I found her weak in this scene too. She didn't try to help herself, she ran and then she ran towards her mate expecting him to help her. Granted that part is how any commited member in a relationship should think of their partner. You should think they will help you. But then she ran off without confronting him too. He turned his back on her and she ran off without a backwards glance or a discussion between them to confirm the rejection.
The FMC later hooks up with twin bears who stole food from her when she was starving in the wild and I'm supposed to look at these male bears as worthy lead characters and mates?? Besides that, this same dingbat/FMC thinks its smart to assist them in a "heist" of some random building simply because the building "looked" rich. WTH?!? The whole plot is absurd and I can see why so many people DNF'd this at about the 36% mark because before that it was boring but after that it was ludacris.
Lastly, it is a cliffhanger that I wasn't prepared for. I don't like reverse harems as a norm. Very few author's can make this appealing to me. This author makes ALL of her characters lousy and stupid. I mean seriously, why would I want to read about petty thieves who knock over convenience stores in their own neighborhoods??? How is this book worthy material?!?! I am highly pissed now because I am one of those readers that has to finish the whole story in order for me to move past it, good or bad and forget it. That's the main reason why I don't like serials, which this is. Five books to tell a story that is already bad from the first book. Basically, this first book is garbage and I highly recommend no one reads this or the series. I doubt it will get any better as it continues.
I was excited to start this book as the blurb made it out to be a strong female character. Instead we have someone who whimpers at the sound of lightening, complains she is ‘mistreated’ by her pack yet has never worked a day in her life because they always provided her with food.
Her three year relationship ends without the boyfriend/new alpha even saying a word to her - she just gets the cold shoulder. That juvenile storyline continues where she runs out the pack, in the rain, in a sundress without packing any of her worldly possessions - it’s like the author wanted to get from A to B and put no consideration into how the FMC actually does it.
The very second the true plot (spoiler warning) - a group of bear shifters who are ‘professional’ robbers (aka trying to steal from their local convenience store?) wants the random person they only met once before when they stole food from her starving mouth to join them in some heist I was out of there.
Not interested - no character seems to have any substance or anything to make me like them.
Without finishing the book I predict it will end with the ex-boyfriend (in the last chapter) pronouncing his love/obsession in some way and try to forcibly get the FMC back….
The kindest thing to say about this book is that most of the words are spelled correctly. Otherwise, it’s juvenile to the point that I would wonder if a high school student was the author. The male characters are in close competition regarding which character is the least mature. One of them was scrawny as a child/teenager and the experience fractured his personality to the the point that he cannot overcome the pain. When he breaks it off with his longtime girlfriend by giving her the cold shoulder (he lacks the maturity to actually say anything to her), she wanders around lost in the forest for about 8 chapters before hooking up with a lawless gang of thieving bear shifters who do sophisticated jobs like robbing the local convenience store that they regularly shop at in the town where they live.
An alpha reject becomes more than anyone thought she could.
Lacy is an outcast in her pack. She’s half wolf, half bear. Her best friend, Xander, is the youngest son of the alpha. He’s somewhat of an outcast too as he’s a runt. Always small and scrawny and the butt of alot of jokes, he and Lacy became childhood friends, and when they were older, became lovers. When the alpha games commence, Xander, as an alpha’s son, is forced to participate. He has no desire to do that as it’s always been understood that his oldest brother, Mitch, would be the next alpha. To the surprise of the entire pack, including Xander himself, he WINS the alpha challenge. He is now the pack alpha! If Lacey thought her life would get easier, she is sadly mistaken because Xander is so full of himself that he decides he was only with Lacey because he couldn’t get anyone else. Our poor heroine is exiled from the pack. Have no fear, she finds her way to Shifter Town. It is a collection of ragtag shifters, of all sorts, who have been exiled from their packs or for whatever reason, have no where else to go. She is befriended by the town witch, and ends up finding her true mates. Plural. They’re twins, and they’re bear shifters; Dov and Bern.
You know what? I ain’t gonna lie, I really liked this book. I was a bit skeptical because reading some of the reviews, I thought that I may not even finish this one. But I really liked the overarching storyline, and I even really liked our core main characters; Bern, Dov, and Lacey. Sure some of the dialogue seemed a bit juvenile, and some of the (ahem) strategy meetings that the brothers had were just dumb, for some reason I didn’t hate it. I guess after reading a dark omegaverse novel, this was just the light romantic lark that I needed.
Character building wasn’t as complete as I’d like; what happened to Lacey’s parents? Why is she alone in the pack? What happened to the twins parents? There was an explanation that they were expelled from their den at a very young age, but no mention of their parents themselves. Maybe some of those answers will come in the subsequent books, it just seems that some of those questions are pretty fundamental that they probably should’ve been included in the initial book of the series.
I really liked having multiple POV‘s in the book. I like getting into the characters heads and know what they’re thinking and feeling. One thing I found very interesting were the chapters from Xander’s POV following Lacey’s expulsion from the pack. It was interesting to read about his ambiguity about this. Even that he loved her, although he ended up being an ass. The other plot twist that I liked, was having Xander return at the end of the book. I don’t like rejected mate tropes where the only time we read about the rejecting mate is at the very beginning of the book when they reject them. And then they’re never heard from again. It was nice to read how Xander felt about seeing Lacey again, even though he’s still an ass.
The book does end on a cliffhanger, so be warned if you prefer that all the books in the series are completed before you begin. So while this book won’t win any awards, I found it to be a very enjoyable way to pass the afternoon. I will continue with the next book in the series, and recommend it for anyone that likes a light paranormal romance novel.
I enjoyed this and I’m going to have to read the next as it’s a cliffhanger ending but there are a few reasons this book is a 3 star for me.
The plot line is ok, I now know it’s a lot of set up for the next book so I’m not mad at it but it went from a really great start, the abuse and upset Lacey experiences and her journey away from her pack was really great, then it feels like the story moves in a really unexpected direction. I just felt it wasn’t set up in enough detail, the system wasn’t explained well and there is little to no ‘magic law’. Things happened too quickly, trust wasn’t build and characters were underdeveloped and it lead me to feeling that characters were just dumb and stupid and were written to follow the plot opposed to making decisions based on their own experiences. I stuck with it at this point, mostly intrigued about where the romance was going and I have mixed feeling about this, I’m pleased I stuck it out through the love triangle romance that occurs, but it’s the most bizarre one Iv read yet 😂
The ending was great for me, although a cliff hanger it was the ending for the book that I really wanted all the way through and I was pleased with how it ended, so despite the shaky middle and the romance I’m not so keen on, I’m really excited to see what happens next!
Its a hard review to write without spoilers if I’m honest but if your out for a bit of fun and don’t mind a little cringe love triangle romance, enjoy some spice and can over look some writing issues, such as dodgy timeline issues in the beginning and a bit of lacking development for world building and some characters then your good to go! Easy to read, finish in a day type book, enjoyable but not perfect.
Wow! What a great start to this new series. Lots of uncertainty, fear, betrayal, danger and an unexpected imprinting. When the book starts we meet Xander but I really didn’t like his actions at times. When we reach the cliffhanger in the final chapter, I still didn’t like him. I hope he changes his attitude in the next book. Dov and Bern also start off as nasty characters, but by the time they get together with Lacey, I am liking them much better. The story about Genesis looks to be an exciting one which I am looking forward to unraveling in future books. Certainly, a different outlook on RH stories. I really enjoyed reading this. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Dated wolf for 3 years once he was alpha, He acted to good for her. She was run out of town. She ended up in shifter town which rejected shifters lived. Twin Bear shifters imprint with her. She gets pregnant. Ends with ex wolf kidnapping her.

I really liked the concept of this story, but this reads like all those stupid episodic stories that you see being advertised on Facebook/Twitter. The writing really leaves a lot to be desired here. I never really felt a connection to any of the characters. While the concept was interesting the execution and logic is horrendous.
Lacey's character is a doormat who makes no sense. She's easily run off from the pack, but is then shown to be tenacious and determined as though she has no quit in her... yeah sure. Like she was apparently starving to death and her kill got stolen by two of the MMCs, but later they explain it away by saying she looked capable (they figured she would catch another quickly) and that she didn't look like she was starving/low on energy. It's weird because Lacey seems to take real issue with them doing this, but then never circles back to it.
The logic of Dov and Bern is also out there. Bern decides that he wants to rob a local convivence store that is on the outskirts of the town they live in... a store they regularly shop at. They also apparently don't even wear any disguises because Lacey recognizes them right away. Exactly how much money was this tiny store even going to have? Probably not enough to make up for the risks, couldn't have been more than a thousand dollars if even that.
Then after their botched robbery they offer Lacey a job to hit up a building because it looks like a fancy office building... Like what? Who even does that? They don't know what is inside, they don't know any of the internal security specifics, and they're asking an inexperienced random woman they just met to join their heist because she was able to hold one of them at knife point. What is even crazier (aside from them having no real plan) is that Lacey had JUST turned her nose up at doing another job like this that was offered to her by another crew. So why is she suddenly good with becoming a criminal after she had just moments before said that wasn't what she was looking for?
Weird logic about how the characters get together aside... The relationship between Lacey, Dov and Bern is weird. The guys imprint on her, but she apparently doesn't wholly feel the same imprint link? Like she feels for them, but they KNOW they imprinted and she just has to take their word for it. Bern and Dov both imprint on her in private and both want to keep it a secret from their brother for some reason. Then Lacey reveals all and both of the guys are douchebags for a bit. They go back and forth on being okay and not okay with the situation.
I don't even know how we're supposed to be adding two more guys into the mix. It just felt like the writer was creating drama for no reason to make it so that their relationship is unstable enough to introduce the other two?
WARNING -- Spoilers for future books:
I decided to stop reading after this book after reading the blurbs and some of the reviews for the future books. Book two she meets her third mate and gets tortured by her former pack for some reason. I don't know how she meets the third mate, who is a tiger, or what happens outside of that Xander allows for her to be tortured because they don't believe what she's saying about the Shifter Town.
Book four is why I decided to not read the rest of the stories: she has a hybrid baby (which is technically a 1/4 wolf and 3/4 bear so idk how this baby is any real use/marvel) and for some reason the fae want her baby? I don't understand why the fae would want her baby... Lacey appeared to be fairly useless in book one so unless she has more abilities that we haven't seen I can't imagine a single reason why the fae would want a wolf/bear baby. Xander apparently was taken by the fae and he saves her baby so they get back together... which ugh. After the way he treated her (letting her get driven out by the pack, letting her get tortured) I don't understand how or why she would ever go back to him. Especially when in book one she has times where she says she feels nothing for him anymore because of the way he abandoned her.
I saw some reviews saying that the author did a good job at making Xander a hated character who is supposed to be redeemed, but I don't see how.. The character work and writing in book one is really bad. I feel bad saying that because I don't like to crap on people, but at the same time I just kept waiting for the story to get better and was just over the drama. I love RH stories and I'm not against bully/abuse/dark romance, but this just wasn't it for me.

Rejected by Wolves is the first book in the Hate to Love Shifters series and my first J.L. Wilder book. This is a multiple perspective paranormal reverse harem and the story follows a wolf/bear hybrid shifter, Lacey, as she is rejected by her wolf mate but finds two bears instead.
In a pack that hates bear shifters, Lacey has been mistreated all her life but she's had her best friend turned mate, Xander, by her side until he manages to win the alpha games and demos Lacey. Seeing the story from Xander's pov had me disliking him before he even won. He was mean to Lacey and when he lashed out he didn't apologize. Then after he won his thoughts about Lacey were horrendous, he started thinking along the lines as the rest of his pack. It was like he was trying to convince himself half the time that he was better than her and the other half he actually believed that crap. The quote that says power makes monsters out of all of us isn't wrong when it comes to Xander.
As for Lacey, she was an okay character. I didn't really connect with her, I don't want it was, she was sort of middle of the road for me. I liked when she stood up for herself but didn't like the one time she felt a little manipulative. It wasn't in a mean way but it didn't sit right for me.
The two bears that imprinted (think fated mates situation) on her are twin bear shifters Bern and Dov. To be honest, I didn't like them too much at first, they seem like low-level criminals without the charm. I mean don't get me wrong I've read plenty of books with morally gray characters or characters that were closer to the evil side (than I care to admit to) and loved them it was just something about the twins that was so so. They got a little better but not much and for twins who seem close, they did not do well with the who imprinting situation which isn't resolved in this book.
While the characters were so so the plot was a little interesting. Hybrid shifters are always interesting then there is this shanty town full of shifters who are mostly low-level criminals, like how does that even work. If it was polished a bit I could totally see a town full of shifter criminals as a series, I'm thinking of something like the hotel Continental in John Wick, now that would be cool. Anyway back to the plot, there are missing shifters, strange magic, and a weird building that all ties together and I don't have a clue as to what's going on.
Rejected by Wolves was a good read but ending on a cliffhanger. Up next is Enemies with Bears.
This is one of those books where I get to the end and am undecided about whether or not I liked it. I got to the end and the book didn't happen they way I expected from the description/blurb and honestly I'm not sure if that's good or bad.
In this story, we have Lacey, a half bear half wolf shifter who has grown up being looked down on for her half breed status. This has been bearable for her because of her relationship with the "runt" of the pack who happens to be one of the alpha's sons. This all changes when the runt suddenly becomes the new alpha unexpectedly and rejects Lacey as she is evicted from the pact.
If you read the blurb, it states that Lacey is rejected and that her mate would never expect her to hook up with others, which indicates some type of ongoing contact post rejection and Xander having some type of reaction, which is not the case so feels misleading.
Let's talk about the characters. We get a little bit of insight of Xavier and Lacey's relationship in the beginning of this book and it honestly isn't that great. She doesn't seem to believe in him and he seems more interested in what his brothers think rather than her. It's all a bit shallow. Later on Xander expresses disgust at a female showing interest in him who'd previously mistreated him, yet at the same time, thinking of the one person who has been there for him as beneath him. There's really no respect earned for Xander in this book.
Once we get past the first few chapters, we don't know anything more about Xander until the last few chapters, which kind of felt disjointed like there was something missing, but maybe that's due to expectations set by the synopsis before reading the book.
I would say that as I was reading this book it did feel like there was something missing, as if it wasn't actually living up to the potential which is actually there. The story itself though isn't bad and I am curious to keep reading to see where it's going. I am concerned however as some of the reviews I've read for the next book are not good.
I give this four stars for two reasons - first, it has a cliffhanger ending, and second, it has an expected cliffhanger ending. As in, you can see what is going to happen at the end coming a mile off. You may not consider that a bad thing, but I am warning you.
The story starts out with Xander and his brothers having a set of fights to determine who will be the new alpha. Of course, Xander's brother, Mitch, is the expected winner and the fights are just for show. Xander was born the runt of the litter and has had to work hard to hone his fighting abilities and put on some muscle. He is still much smaller and less powerful than his two brothers, but at least he won't completely embarrass himself. His girlfriend, Lacey, is also a lower-level wolf in the pack because she is not a purebred wolf. She is a wolf and bear hybrid who has always had a hard time shifting and is made to feel inferior by the rest of the pack.. When the Alpha Games do not go as planned and Xander is suddenly the new alpha, the other females drive her out of the pack, with no resistance from Xander. She is suddenly alone in the woods with no way to feed or protect herself.
Lacey is near death when she is found and brought to a witch who lives in Shifter Village. This will be the start of a new life for Lacey. I am not going to tell you what happens when she finds herself going off to rob a building with a gang of wolves - let's just say it is unexpected and will lead to her new problem - twin bears imprinting on her.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Xander has faced prejudice since he was the so-called runt of the pack today his brother Mitch the alpha in training is wanting to fight his brothers in a ritual as proof of his prowess to be Alpha. Xander was more interested in spending time with Lacy as they have always done since they were kids even though they are not kids anymore and they spend time entertaining each other and look out for one another. Xander did not realize until he was about to fight Derek he was not going to roll over he was over 6 feet tall and he had muscles now maybe not as much as his older brothers but he wasn't afraid, all he wanted to do was remain neutral. But a voice in the pack raised his hackles and instinct took over. Lacy is a hybrid half wolf and half bear she doesn't shift well but she was at the back of the pack today for Xander sitting in the back with the women. Unfortunately, Lacey finds herself outside of the pack and she cannot go back she must fend for herself for the first time in her life. She was barely surviving when she ran into some bears and they stole her food. She is rescued just in time and finds out that life is a lot different away from the pack. The intense storyline and the characters keep you reading. Book 1 in series. Drama, suspense, mystery, danger, violence, love. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Lacey a hybrid wolf is a runt of her pack. Her "mate" Xander is 3rd born son of the Alpha who unexpectedly becomes Alpha by beating his 2 older brothers in the Alpha challenge. Xander was a runt of the pack so this was a shock to everyone including himself that he won. The pack she-wolfs realize that Lacey will be their Luna so they attack and run her out all while Xander doesn't do a thing. Lacey is alone and starving in the woods and she meets a pack of bears and specifically two twin brothers, David and Bern, who steal her dinner. Lacey is later found by someone else and brought into Shifter Village where she lives with a local witch. Fast forward she imprints on the twin brothers but some drama unfolds and the book ends in a cliffhanger.
I thought that the story line was different but I didn't feel much character depth. Even the relationships were just ok. I found the whole well he didn't tell you were exclusive really stupid and unnecessary transfer from the real world of dating since the concepts of mates and imprinting is more like engagement and marriage. I am all for empowerment of women but consistency is a key and would be nice to read a story that doesn't end in a young girl pregnancy.....
I was split between 2 and 3 stars but since I will read the 2nd one I went for 3.
This is the beginning of the "Hate To Love Shifters" series and I must admit I was not happy it ended in a cliffhanger. The story kept me engaged from beginning to end but I would have waited until the series was complete before beginning this one so I could binge read them all. Lacey is a mixed breed (bear and wolf) and the wolves of her pack consider her the lowest of the low. She can't even shift at will which also makes her a target. Xander was the Alpha's third son but he had been quite small growing up so his social standing wasn't much better than Lacey's. They'd always been friends but had been together for three years. When he unexpectedly wins the Alpha Games and becomes Alpha, she's run out of town. She has a lot of challenges to overcome and I was really proud of her and how she faced them. She'd never been given a chance to do anything and as the book progressed, she blossomed. She was brave and seemed to be a really good person. Her personal life also had plenty of changes and there will be more to come. There is a bit of a twist towards the end of the book and that part is what will keep us hanging. I recommend reading this book but I would also suggest waiting until there is a resolution to the story.
Lacey is a hybrid , half Wolf, half bear and because of that she is the lowest of the pack, treated like garbage, just tolerated. But she didn’t care because she had Xander her best friend and mate. Who swore he’d always protect her. Xander is the youngest son of the alpha and the runt of the litter, believing he would never be better than his two older brothers. He was ok with that as he had Lacey, up until the Alpha games and found something he wanted more and abandoned her. After being betrayed by Xander, she was run off and injured by the females in her pack, Lacey finds her self with a fever, starving and alone in the woods. She collapses by the river after some bear shifters stole the rabbit she managed to catch. She wakes up and finds her self in Shifter Town. Where she meets Bern and Dov who she eventually imprints with. But Xander….
I really enjoyed reading this book, great storyline. Loved following Lacey’s journey, eagerly waiting to see what happens in the next book. Recommend reading. I voluntarily read a Booksprout arc copy of this book and above is my honest review.
I had been craving a rejected mate romance. Whether the heroine ended up with the guy who rejected her or someone else I didn't really care but I wanted that rejected make trope. While this was that trope, it didn't satisfy me at all.
Normally with rejected mates, when the reject happens, I feel it in my heart and it doesn't really matter how close to the beginning of the book it is. When the moment happened here, I felt nothing. And I brushed that off, thinking maybe it would hit me in the feels a little later...nope. This whole book, I did not care.
Anyway there were issues with some things not quite making sense, example, I didn't buy that after 20 years of being in the pack they were so quick to run Lacey off. I didn't understand why after Xander has surprisingly won alpha status, that he has zero conversation with Lacey, he just turns his back on her and that's it.
One thing that bothered me was that Xander had a few POV chapters, I think they may have been just so we, the reader, see how much of a jerk he is and see what was going on in his pack but I still didn't care to read his thoughts. I hope he doesn't end up being part of Lacey's harem in the next book. He just acted like such a little child who suddenly won power, it got on my nerves.
I also didn't buy that Lacey would have joined up to rob some place so quickly. Especially with guys who harassed her after she was run off from her pack.
I'm kind of on the fence about continuing the series. I'm a little curious to see what happens but I'm worried it's going to be more of the same and I don't want to read that.
This book is first in a series. Its fast paced and not a standalone. Lacey is a half breed, half bear and half wolf. She was never welcome in her wolf pack, but they mostly left her alone. Now she was totally run out of there and was alone in the woods starving. To make matters worse, she couldn’t shift when she wanted to. It’s just another reason she was never accepted. Her only friend and lover was Zander, the alpha’s third son also didn’t fit in very well. He was not as big and strong as his brothers. Unexpectedly, he somehow won the the Alpha games to be the next alpha of his pack. The women of the pack had ran Lacey out of town, and Zander did nothing to stop it. She barely survived in the wild. She was never trained to hunt and since she couldn’t shift, she was freezing. There are many twists and turns, lots of danger, some magic thrown in and of course, HEAT. Unexpected action and surprises keep you reading. Can’t wait for the next one.

Lacey is part bear and part wolf, so the pack considers her to be at the bottom of the rung socially. Xander was a runt, very small stature, and was looked down on by the others in the pack. So he and Lacey at least had each other’s friendship.
When Xander unexpectedly succeeds in the Alpha Games, however, he becomes Alpha and has no time for her now. In a way, that was the best thing for her, because when they ran her out of town, she had to become stronger and self-sufficient.
The book ends in a cliffhanger, but the reader can already see that there will be a revisiting of the situation, and I can’t wait to see it! I’m sorry that Xander didn’t use his good fortune to help others in the pack since he already knows how rough it is to be weaker and different. But Lacey is a good person and learned to roll with the punches so far. What is in store for her next? Hang in there and grab book 2 as soon as it releases!
Lacey was not liked in her pack by anyone by Xander her mate. However, when he enters the Alpha Games and wins everything changes between them. Lacey is hurt and chased by some means girls in the pack and when she turns to Xander he ignores her. Heartbroken she runs into the woods not knowing what to do next. She is there for a little while and starts feeling sick. When she wakes up after passing out in her spot at a cave she notices that she isn't there anymore. She is with Jean in Shifter Town when she meets Bern and Dov again. The last time she ran into them they stole her dinner and now they are trying to rob the store she works at. Sparks fly between them and its not long before things get complicated. Has Lacey finally found a place to belong?
This is an amazing story that will draw you in and leave you wanting more. WARNING! This ends on a cliff hanger because its a series. This is a well written and very entertaining story. Its a book that any book lover would enjoy.
I was gripped by this first book in the Hate to Love series. The emotions and turmoil flows of the page. Lacey is a complex character. Devoted to Xander, when he shuns her, her heart is broken. As reject of her pack, fending for herself is near impossible and her fortunes are not good. Her saviour and future are incomprehensible to all she knew and has to adapt quickly. I love this character and how she evolves through the story. Bern and Dov are also contradictions. First impressions do not go well and its only a leap of faith that sees them come into there own. I loved this book, the story detail, character arcs and feelings radiating of the page had me hooked. I can't wait for book two. I highly recommend this read. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This is a "serial" about Lacey a hybrid, part bear and wolf shifter, who is raised among a wolf pack that consider her the lowest of the pack. When Xander who is the Alpha's third son and her only friend wins the Alpha Games and becomes Alpha she's forced out of the pack. Barely alive standing on her own Lacey is saved by Vaughn who takes her to Shifter Town which Jean the witch cares for her at her home. Looking for work, Jean warns her to be careful around the town because shifters have been going missing. Two bear shifters Bern and Dov try to rob the convenience store she's working at when she resist them. They want her to help them break into the Genesis Building. What occurs with Bern and Dov as Lacey delves into her feelings, and the mystery of the missing shifters is explored in this first part of a ARC that I volunteer to read and review via Booksprout.
DNF - quit at 32% The book moved very slowly. By 32%, I’m not sure who the next guy will be in her life. I tried to keep reading, but when the bears come on the scene -wanting to get her involved in theft (sounded like robbing stores or banks or something), I just couldn’t stomach that they would maybe end up being her new love interests & involve the prissy flower in a life of crime. None of the guys seen in this first 32% were any kind of guy I would want to read about. They all sounded like @ssholes. The FMC, Lacey, is just a pathetic Mary Sue. Nothing about this story was worth me wasting time on. Needless to say, I won’t be continuing with the series.
At my age (60), life is way too short & my time is too important to force myself to read a book I'm not enjoying, especially when there are so many other books out there waiting to be read.
This is an interesting story that had me hooked as soon as I read the blurb. Lacey is a wolf/bear hybrid mistreated by everyone in her pack besides the runt, her mate. He quickly casts her aside and without his protection, she’s thrown out of the pack. That’s where things get interesting. Although this is a rejected mates story, it’s refreshing and original, unpredictable, and solid overall. Medium burn RH, great world building, and complex, dynamic characters with depth. It does have a cliffhanger ending. I did have some confusion about the narrating. Although each chapter clearly denotes the character whose perspective it’s based on, at times it read like first person while other times omnipotent so it’s hard to recall who is narrating. Besides that, I think it’s a good start to what I think will be a great series.
Rejected by Wolves is book one in the series Hate to Love Shifters by author J.L. Wilder. WOW- love this new series, beginning of this new series. Entertaining, intense, suspenseful, lots of drama and oh the steam is off the charts. There’s a lot going on in this tale from betrayal to acceptance- it’s a long journey and it just keeps going. Only issue I had - it’s a CLIFFHANGER- ugh!! Now that I’m all hooked- I can’t wait to turn the page - it’s ended well not ended, it more like paused. I’m not a patient person but for this book, for the rest of the story I’ll try to be. Enjoy!!
