Fans of The Bad Guys and Catwad will love THE CRYPTID CLUB, a hilarious new four-book graphic novel series about an unlikely team of kid sleuths out to solve the mysteries behind the sudden spate of monster sightings around their school.
Lily knows better than to listen to the gossip her little brother, Henry, has heard, but when her school newspaper needs a big headline, the rumor that Bigfoot has been spotted is the best lead she's got.
But when claw marks appear on the football equipment and excessive animal hair starts clogging-up the gym showers, Lily knows she can't be afraid. This is her opportunity to break the story wide-open. But can Lily, Henry, and Oliver, the neighbor-kid they're babysitting, discover what Bigfoot wants before it's too late?
Everything is not as it seems in this hilarious new graphic novel series debut by Emmy Award-winning writer for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert Michael Brumm and bestselling illustrator Jeff Mack.
Bigfoot wants to play football! Bigfoot is taking showers in the boys locker room! Bigfoot is just as scared of us as we are of him! Really fun book about a group of friends who decide to investigate cryptids who are starting to show up all over the place! Will look for more books in this series!
This was a super cute graphic novel, perfect for kids who like mysteries and monsters. Outcast Lily, her little brother Henry and Oliver the neighborhood kid she babysits need to find out the truth about the rumor of bigfoot being sighted at their school on the football field and in the locker room. Just so hilarious and can’t wait to see the next mystery they investigate. Thanks to Harper Collins Childrens Books and Netgalley for the complimentary copy of this book in e-book form. All opinions in this review are my own.
This was a slow start. At first I thought it was going to be a bust. I started reading it to the 8 year old and we put it up and didn't touch it for MONTHS. But then, one day, he wanted to read some. And he got hooked. We binged it and now he's PUMPED for the next in the series to come out. And we spent hours looking up crytids together! A huge success, but a slow starter.
** “It’s hard to really want to do something and not be able to do it.” **
Michael Brumm, along with illustrator Jeff Mack, brings us the fun new graphic novel about Bigfoot and his journey to achieve his dreams in “Bigfoot Takes the Field.”
When two eighth-graders stumble upon Bigfoot taking a shower in the locker room, third-grader Henry joins forces with his older sister Lily to search for clues. They form the Cryptid Club with their young neighbor Oliver to determine why Bigfoot is visiting their school.
Using bright and colorful illustrations, “Bigfoot Takes the Field” is a story filled with tongue-in-cheek humor as well as having some inspirational moments. It reminds us about the difficulties of being an outsider and wanting to belong; achieving our dreams; and working together and overcoming our differences.
It does occasionally reference things kids might not understand, like the Illuminati, and some humor may be more appropriate for teens, but pre-teens and older will enjoy this fun story, which is due out June 7.
Four stars out of five.

'The Cryptid Club #1: Bigfoot Takes the Field' by Michael Brumm with art by Jeff Mack is a graphic novel for young readers about a mysterious siting at a school.
When there is rumors of a Bigfoot siting at her school, Lily decides to form a club with Henry and Oliver. They devise a way to sneak out of the house and investigate the school locker room. What they find could change the fate of their school football team.
I laughed pretty hard a few times while reading it. I think younger readers will really like this one. The art and characters are also fun.
I received a review copy of this graphic novel from HarperColllins Children's Books and NetGalley. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.
Lily and her brother, Henry, don't really fit in at school. Henry still can be happy but Lily cares about what people say. Then rumors start about a weird creature being in the locker room. Lily and Henry decide to investigate and their little brother tags along. One night they see that there really is a Bigfoot! They make friends with him and learn that it is more important to help others belong than to worry about fitting in. I like the pictures and I like that it is funny. Even kids who don't like to read much will probably like it because it is funny and Bigfoot is in it. (review by Jack, 3rd grade)
My one small complaint about this book is aimed at the art director for the publishing company, who authorized a cover illustration that gives away several plot points. Sigh. Otherwise, this is really a cute start to a series that looks like it will be fun and goofy. Yes, it's technically a mystery series, but it is about cryptids, and in this case about a Bigfoot who keeps getting seen near or in a local school. It's a clever and short graphic novel that will appeal to kids who want a quick read.
A cute children's graphic novel about cryptids! Rumors abound that there is a Bigfoot in the football locker room. Lily is determined to find the truth to get the scoop for the school newspaper. However, what she finds is actually a Bigfoot! It turns out that he isn't scary - he just wants to play football!
This is the first in a new series that looks to be part mystery, part cryptid! It was pretty cute and an interesting read.
This middle grade graphic novel is interesting. It flows well but is a tad bit wordy. It’s about a gal who runs the school newspaper in elementary school and her strive to find a good story. She’s tired of cafeteria stories and decides that she’s going to hunt for the cryptid everybody thinks is hiding in the locker room. The story is relatively short and easy, and it works, but great literature it’s not. It will not be here in 20 years so enjoy it while it is
This is part of my Eisner reading list and it’s actually quite cute and charming. It could be a cartoon on tv. A young precocious, ostracized, because she’s a “nerd”, girl ends up trying to get to the bottom of supposed sightings of a yeti in the male locker room. There’s lots of silly gags and personality quirks assigned to all the kids. It almost feels like watching an episode of The Simpsons, except it’s clearly mostly aimed at children and much less cerebral regarding themes.

4 stars = Great!
This was cute! The characters are fun, the story is just the right amount of silly. I enjoyed the sibling relationship here, and the interactions between the main kids.
I can see some students liking this but I did not particularly enjoy it. The drawing style is not one I'm a fan of and there is a lot of gross-out things in the book. Plus, I think all the characters are kind of rude. I would contemplate getting this for my school library but I found the mention of nipples being in a cast from purple nurples to be inappropriate.
It’s a fun read. The comic book style will make it great for younger readers. The author even incorporates some of the science behind cryptozoology. I’m glad to be adding some copies into my classroom library.
I received a review copy of this book through my Harper rep.
Lily and her brother are not the most popular kids in their school, but everything changes when they find out there is a real Bigfoot hiding in the football player’s locker room. This cute book is the first in the Crypid Club series and took me a little by surprise. My five-year-old found it my ARC pile and wanted to read it. I found myself laughing throughout. Lily and Henry have a realistic middle-school sibling relationship but in my opinion, Baby Oliver, though a minor character, steals every scene. My son said that he liked “the Bigfoot part” the most and asked me when we could read the next one. Not for a little bit but I look forward to reading it with him as well.
