Evie Berry is a thirty-year-old wannabe screenwriter who spends her days managing a London cinema bar and making the podcast Pasta La Vista with her best friend Ben. She's also obsessed with Hugo Hearst. Have you heard of him? Of course you have. He's only one of the most influential and not to mention swoon-worthy bestselling writers of his generation.

When Evie's not hooking up with her on-again, off-again booty call 'Ever-Ready Freddy' (and sometimes even when she is), she fantasises about what might have been if she'd met Hugo years ago, when he was just a struggling writer.

After Evie interviews a psychic to the stars on her podcast, her life is catapulted ten years into the past. But the grass isn't quite as green as she remembers . . .

Fancy Meeting You Here is a hilarious and heartwarming new book from the bestselling authors of the global hits The Book Ninja and While You Were Reading - a love story about reliving your early twenties and testing out that old saying: be careful what you wish for.

No, Fancy Meeting You Here is not my usual read, but after reading and loving The Book Ninja and While You Were Reading I knew that I had to read this one too. It came along at exactly the right time for me and I devoured it in a night. I wasn't feeling the best and it certainly cheered me up and made me giggle. A lovely, sweet story that will make you think about your choices in life and what you might do differently if given the chance.

Evie is a 30 year old aspiring screenwriter than just can't seem to get a break. She is single and life hasn't turned out the way she had hoped it would. After interviewing a psychic who works with celebrities for her podcast "Pasta La Vista" with her best friend Ben, she finds herself 10 years in the past. Waking up in her childhood bedroom she realises that she has the chance for a do-over, and make her life what she dreamed of. And the chance to meet the actor./writer that she is obsessed with - Hugo Hearst.

This is a fun, light hearted book that gives you plenty to think about. What would you change if you could go back to your 20's? So many things come to mind but at the same time I wouldn't be without my husband and kids!

Thanks to Allen and Unwin for my advanced copy of this book to read. Released in Australia November 30th.

This was a feel-good time warp type of chick lit book. Evie is in her early thirties in London, she has designs on becoming a screen writer, spending her days working in a London cinema bar, and producing a podcast with her best mate Ben.

She has a friends with benefits type of arrangement with a guy but is obsessed with one of the best-selling authors of her time. She manages to go back in time to meet him, they hook up and it’s all fine and dandy; till it isn’t.

I was not hooked, nor did I feel any affinity with any of the characters. I was left feeling this was just not for me. I didn't like the characters.

The premise of her falling for someone already existing in her life was too obvious for me, but those who like a little bit of frivolity and suspend reality for a little while would like this one more than me!

Nevertheless, this was well written by an Australian duo, which I noticed a small nod to another of their titles where books are left at random places – which is something I’ve started to do at work (a university) so I’ve embraced that.

With many thanks to Allen & Unwin for my uncorrected proof copy to read and review.

I wasn’t sure about this one but once I started it I thoroughly enjoyed it, it is fun and has some wonderful characters in it, I loved Evie and seeing her find the confidence that she needed to go forward with her life as a screenplay writer, Ben was also so good what a guy, I loved him and Hugo plays such a big part in this one, this is one that had me turning the pages.

Evie is thirty and is managing a bar in a cinema in London and doing a podcast named Pasta La Vista with her best friend Ben but what she really wants is to be a screenplay writer, she had deferred her university course years ago to concentrate on her writing but still hasn’t quite got there, she is also totally obsessed with writer and actor Hugo Hearst.

When her and Ben do an interview with physic Maximillian Evie asks a lot of questions about Hugo after finding out he has visited Maximillian and he asks her questions about what she really wants in life and suggests that at a certain time she shouts out words to a song Evie is has no idea what he is saying but the next time she is with her on and off again boyfriend Ever-Ready-Freddy she shouts the words and her life is thrown into turmoil when so goes back ten years in time.

Being twenty again isn’t quite what she remembers but meeting the man she is obsessed with opens up a whole new world for Evie and makes her see things that she hadn’t seen before. I did truly enjoy this book and seeing Evie become the confident woman she is and find the happiness and love that she deserved. This is a well written story with characters who come to life on the pages it is fun and has lots of emotions as well and is a book that I would highly recommend.

My thanks to Allen & Unwin for my copy to read and review.

Fancy Meeting You Here by Ali Berg & Michelle Kalus. (2021).

Evie is 30, a wannabe screenwriter who manages a London cinema bar and makes a podcast with her best friend Ben. She's also obsessed with Hugo, an influential and swoon-worthy bestselling writer. When Evie's not hooking up with her booty call (and sometimes even when she is), she fantasises about what might have been if she'd met Hugo years ago. After she interviews a psychic, her life is catapulted ten years into the past. But the grass isn't quite as green as she thought it would be...

I've enjoyed both previous books by these authors, so it was no surprise to me that I found this one entertaining. I thought the premise was relatable - I'm sure many of us have pondered on what if we somehow did meet that hot celebrity crush before they were famous? This is what happens to Evie when she is transported back in time; luckily, she has all her memories still even though she's ten years younger. It's a cute story with funny moments, and super easy to read.
Overall: I happily recommend this novel to anyone looking for a light fun modern romance with a twist.

I borrowed the audiobook because I liked the title and I saw the book on some lists.
I'm glad I didn't read the blurb (I rarely do) as I probably would have avoided it because a major aspect involves a time warp twist - and I don't care for them.

As I stated plenty of times before, for me, when it comes to genre literature, the devil is in the details. I liked the characters, the fast pacing, so I enjoyed spending a few hours pottering around the house while listening to this audiobook.

I probably won't remember much about it in a couple of weeks, but that's the fate of many other books.

FANCY MEETING YOU HERE by Ali Berg & Michelle Kalus is a light-hearted, yet cautionary tale about being careful what you wish for.

Thirty-year-old Evie Berry’s life isn’t bad but she’s definitely lamenting lost opportunities. An interview with a psychic for the podcast (Pasta La Vista) she co-hosts with best friend Ben results in some strange advice that Evie takes up . . . the next thing she knows, she’s travelled ten years back in time. Evie is twenty, living at home, studying film at university, and Ben is still her best friend.

Now Evie can rewrite history, including engineering a relationship with her long-term obsession, Hugo Hearst. It all starts off smoothly, yet the closer Evie gets to what she thinks she wanted, she starts to realise it isn’t what she thought it would be or what’s best for her.

Fancy Meeting You Here is peppered with plenty of puns (both funny and groan-worthy) and movie references (I made a list). It’s an opportunity for a life re-do – something I think many of us would say yes to. It’s a fun and entertaining read. If you’re a Christina Lauren fan, check out Berg & Kalus.

Fancy Meeting You Here is the third novel by Australian authors, Ali Berg and Michelle Kalus. At thirty, Evie Berry’s life is not quite what she foresaw. Sure, she hosts a popular and successful film and food lovers’ podcast with her one-time best friend, Ben Feldman. And she works part-time in a cinema bar. But romance in her own life is a series of duds, and hook-ups with a friend-with-benefits she doesn’t particularly like. And the rom-com screenplay that she deferred her Film Studies course at the University of London to write? That’s still a work in progress.

Ben’s irritation with her fixation on actor/novelist Hugo Hearst is probably not unreasonable, Evie concedes, later acknowledging “Ben had grown and developed and chased exciting opportunities over the past decade, while Evie had remained stagnant, so obsessed with the idea of becoming perfect in the future, that she had become stuck in the now.”

When the pair do a podcast with Maximillian, clairvoyant to the stars, Evie tries unsuccessfully to turn talk to Hugo Hearst, one of his more recent clients, but before she leaves, she manages to draw from him a tip about her own love-life. When she follows his bizarre instruction, Evie is at first confused, then eventually shocked: suddenly, she’s twenty-year-old Evie, living the life she had ten years earlier.

Once she understands that this is real, she asks “What if she could redo her twenties with a thirty-year-old perspective, and finally make something of herself?” Why, she could: stay at Uni instead of deferring; write that screenplay; be at home to support her younger sister during their parents’ toxic break-up; make people more aware of climate change, empower women against sexist behaviour, and improve the world.

So it’s a little disappointing, then, that the first thing she does is to set up a “chance” meeting with the not-yet-famous Hugo Hearst, using her thorough knowledge of his preferences to make herself attractive to him. And bingo, she succeeds, more comprehensively than she could have imagined. But is the man she has dreamed of for ten years really who he seems to be? And is he, ultimately, who she needs, or wants?

Initially, Evie isn’t all that likeable: perhaps a little too self-centred, and lacking self-respect. It’s clear that her friends are true and loyal and supportive, and it’s surprising that her thirty-year-old perspective doesn’t prevent her from being gaslit. But it is good to see that a second bite at her twenties allows her to mature and get her priorities right. Perhaps predictable, the happy ending is nonetheless, welcome. A very enjoyable and entertaining rom-com.

What would you do if you could rewrite your history? Who would you fancy meeting?During the past decade 30 year old expatriate Aussie Evie Berry has dropped out of her film degree at a London university, procrastinated on her artistic dream of writing a screenplay, endured her parents’ miserable divorce, and had a string of failed relationships. Not a complete loser, she has created a podcast for lovers of film and carbs, ‘Pasta la Vista’, with her best friend Ben and maintained her crush on actor/writer Hugo Hearst whose on-screen kiss at the end of his film ‘Henrietta’s Gift’ eclipses for Evie all other cinematic smooches. Under false pretences she has convinced Ben that they should interview Maximilian, clairvoyant and medium to the stars. Of whom she knows Hugo is a client. Following the quirky advice of the zany seer, Evie is catapulted 10 years back in time: armed with knowledge, confidence and feminist attitudes will she make the most of being in the wrong time by creating her perfectly right moment?
Evie orchestrates to cross paths with the currently struggling writer Hugo at his preferred café, blatantly reading his favourite book. A whirlwind romance leads to cohabitation and writing collaboration, resulting in a book and movie deal. All seems to be glitz and glamour, with Hugo’s status skyrocketing but at a swanky event Evie encounters Maximilian as a waiter. His cryptic comments are hardly advice, but encourage her to ponder whether to return to her real life or live in the moment.
‘Fancy Meeting you Here’ is a fun rom-com read. Unaccomplished and unfulfilled Evie is easily related to and the ominous hour-glass page break symbol is a reminder that time isn’t always on our side.

UNPUTDOWNABLE. Just go and add this to your TBR!! Fancy Meeting You Here is their best yet!!! Wow!!
Meet Evie, a 30 year old women who would rather daydream about her crush on actor and screenwriter Hugo Hearst. Her life seems to be medicore. She can’t seem to get into a consistent relationship or get past writers block on the screenplay she left Uni to work on. They only thing going for her is the podcast she hosts with her best friend Ben, yet even he realises all she ever obsesses over is Hugo Hearst. Evie is convinced Hugo would have once been her soul mate, so after a peculiar interaction with a psychic, she find herself 10 years younger, as a 20 year old who is back in the past, ready to change her fate. This charming rom com is absolutely everything you would hope for! Picture Jenifer Garner in 13 going on 30 in reverse, yet with a modern touch and the cutest life lesson throughout “Be careful what you wish for”. Filled with literally everything I love? Eg. pasta (lol here for it), love, dialogue from my favourite rom coms, gossip the talk of the modern decade, humour and charm, this one will bring pure joy. I loved it!! Especially the cute links I picked up to A & Ms previous novels and to Books on The Rail.

Out Nov 30th, this one is a must read for rom com lover. Thanks to Allen & Unwin and Ali & Michelle for the gifted advanced copy.

A sprightly contemporary romance novel for fans of time warps, Fancy Meeting You Here is the third release from the combined efforts of co-authors Ali Berg and Michelle Kalus. Fun, light heated, easy and smooth going, Fancy Meeting You Here is a book for the summer season.

Popular writing duo Ali Berg and Michelle Kalus introduce Evie Berry, the thirty-something lead character of their latest release, Fancy Meeting You Here. Evie has ambitions to become a screenwriter, but in the meantime she passes her time by working at a cinema bar in London. Evie’s best friend is Ben and they have a podcast together called Pasta La Vista. Evie is also preoccupied with thoughts of Hugo Hearst, a well-known writer who Evie has quite a long standing crush on. While Evie busies herself with her casual boyfriend Freddy, she continues to dream about what life would be like if she had shacked up with Hugo Hearst in the early stages of his career. When Evie conducts an interview with a celebrity psychic as part of her podcast series, she is suddenly sent back into the past. Evie’s dreams are about to come true, but will she be happy with results?

A cheery novel with a unique and contemplative life twist, Fancy Meeting You Here is the latest offering from the writers who penned global hits The Book Ninja and While You Were Reading. This new story from The Book Ninja franchise affords the reader an opportunity to take a time capsule back into the past with character Evie as she relives her twenties again.

I’ve had the pleasure of reading the previous two book releases from Melbourne based writing partners Ali Berg and Michelle Kalus. These two authors have amassed quite a cult following since they published their first novel, The Book Ninja. With such a bright cover and an interesting front cover statement suggesting that this story promises to deliver a love story that rewrites history, I was soon taken in. After a great premise and introduction, I had high hopes for this one. However, as I made my way through this book, I did find it a touch predictable and the time travel aspect didn’t completely win me over. I found some elements in this novel worked for me, while other areas did not. I enjoyed the podcast and the relationships that the lead character holds with wider cast. However, I did find myself skimming this one as I wasn’t entirely convinced by the storyline crux. Others may find Fancy Meeting You Here to be fresh, funny and original but I did struggle to completely connect.

Evie Berry is the main protagonist of Fancy Meeting You Here. Evie is a character who represents the modern-day woman. Evie is hopeful, enterprising, regretful and pensive. I did feel there was some space between Evie and the reader, which did slow down my connection to this head character. The open dialogue exchanges between Evie and the featured character set were in tune with the direction of this tale, issuing the audience with some laughs and claps. The plot and romance aspects were playful, which keeps up the entertainment value. However, the umbrella message about wishful thinking is what defines this novel.

Fancy Meeting You Here is about change, self-power, belief, faith, chances and accomplishments. If you are looking for a slightly different romance or contemporary fiction read, Fancy Meeting You Here may be the book for you.

This sweet and funny read was exactly what I needed in early December when the Christmas craziness set in and my children began writing extensive Santa wish lists, planning gingerbread houses and talking about elaborate teacher gifts!

I’d heard fantastic things about Ali Berg and Michelle Kalus’s first two books, plus their impressive ‘Books on the Rail’ initiative, and had great fun between the pages of Fancy Meeting You Here. I really enjoyed the television and movie references, the time travel aspect, the bookish sub-plot, plus the wildly different main male characters Ben and Hugo. Out now with Allen & Unwin, it’s the perfect summer beach read!

If I was suddenly transported 10 years back in time, I don't think my reaction would be, oh well I guess I'll go stalk some random celebrity I have a crush on in the future. The whole premise of this book was wasted and the ending was obvious af. But still, it was an enjoyable read. I found it funny and easy and sweet.

I loved this book! Unlike their previous two novels which revolves around books, this one was movies!
I loved the weaving of romcoms throughout - Bridget Jones, 10 Things I Hate About You etc etc. and the storyline went along so well with all the references, giving off some great 13 Going on 30 vibes.

It was quirky, funny, romantic, predictable (but in that good time com way) and lovely.

While I still hold a place for Bea from their last novel, I did still love Evie and this was a great read.

Be careful what you wish for...

Evie Berry is a thirty-year-old who wants to be a screenwriter. In the meantime, she works in a London cinema bar and makes the podcast Pasta La Vista with her best friend Ben. She also dreams about what might have happened if she had met the now successful writer Hugo Hearst when he was younger, before he was successful. Sigh.

And just like magic, after an interview with a psychic, Evie finds herself in the past. She is ten years younger, and Hugo Hearst is there, available, in the early stages of his career. And Evie finds herself in a position to, well, influence the future for others as well.

This book was chosen as an online book club read by my local library. I found it an entertaining light read with some laugh out loud moments as Evie negotiated living in the past while knowing aspects of the future. If you’ve ever wondered ‘what if’ and you enjoy light-hearted fiction, then this may be a book for you. If you could turn back time, what decade of life would you return to?
Hmm.

I like clever, quirky, time-travel stories, so was looking forward to reading this one.
It was a quick, easy read and quite ‘nice’ for a gentle escape, but a bit predictable and the main character was frustratingly dense at times!
Being back in your twenties with the insights from your thirties is a great premise, but didn’t seem to be fully realized, though seeing how much things had changed with regard to environmental issues and #MeToo, was interesting.
I was surprised she found it so easy to be back in her past, I don’t know that I would manage so well.
So, all in all, it was a bit of gentle fun but not groundbreaking.

This book was not for me. The plot had potential as a light fun read, similar to Robert Webb's "Come Again" (which was excellent), but the writing itself really lost me and made me cringe throughout. Some people would probably enjoy this but not my cup of tea.

This doesn’t have the charm of the Book Ninja but it’s still a decent read. I grew a bit frustrated with Evie who seemed so oblivious to Hugo’s issues but I guess things worked out in the end. Worth a read if you like frustrating romances 😊

Such a cute rom com, a tale of what if you could go back and do things differently? Is getting what you wish for everything it’s cracked up to be. I found this funny and sad and cute and left me with all the feels. Could definitely picture it as a movie

Fancy Meeting You Here is the third novel from the writing duo Ali Berg and Michelle Kalus. I loved the Australian author’s previous books because they are immensely entertaining. With high hopes going into this romcom, I was hooked from page one as I stepped into Evie Berry’s shoes.

Evie is thirty year old Londoner who is reaching for the stars. For a long time, she has wanted to be a screen writer, yet it doesn’t seem to be happening anytime soon. She is earning a living as manager of the local cinema and, enjoys making a podcast, Pasta La Vista, with her best friend Ben.

As the girl next door, Evie's love life is a reflection of the stereotype. She is in an on-again, off-again relationship with Ever-Ready-Freddy, while also obsessing about bestselling writer, Hugo Hearst. All signs point to Evie being a daydreamer. She needs a kick start to get moving and it comes in the most unlikely and hilarious manner.

For their podcast, Evie and Ben are reluctant interviewers of a clairvoyant, Maximilian. Max hits a little too close to home for Evie’s liking when it comes to matters of the heart so she can’t help but seek the man’s advice. His unconventional guidance put a smile on my face and takes Evie to the past, back to her twenty year old self. Here, Evie has the chance to right the wrongs of her youth.

Will Evie get it right the second time around?

Fast paced and with plenty of laugh out loud moments, Fancy Meeting You Here delves into love, second chances, friendship and much more.

Not my usual genre but I'm a sucker for anything time travel. Evie is 30, a wannabe screenwriter who runs a podcast with her best friend Ben. She is obsessed with Hugo Hearst, best seeking author, actor, and hottie. Evie is convinced if ahe had just met Hugo before he made it big they would be happy together. After a meeting with a psychic she is catapulted 10 years in the past and after adapting alarmingly well to her new situation, Evie heads out to find Hugo and fall in love.
This is one of those books where you already know what's going to happen before you open the book. Oh she is in love with a star but her male best friend thinks she can do better, I wonder what will happen. This was a super quick read and only at the end did I realise these authors also wrote "While You Were Reading" which was a DNF for me. The writing....it isn't good. The book opens with Evie and Ben at the psychic, by the first chapter she is back in 2010, by page 30 she has met Hugo and captured his heart. It all moves really fast and is very superficial. Evie also falls into her past life incredibly well, she barely takes half a day to accept what a happened and recommends living her life. I don't know about anyone else but I could not slide seamlessly back into my 29 year old self. I don't remember anyone's name, I couldn't find my way around uni, I can't remember how to do my job. And if I did wake up 20 again my first thing would be to buy shares and bitcoin, not stalk a celebrity. The relationship with Hugo is romantic but without substance. Besides the fact he is hot it is hard to grasp what's so special about Hugo. Of course I think everyone thinks "if only I knew then what I know now" and I'm sure if we all relived our 20s we would do things a lot better. Evie makes better choices, she isn't held back by fear, and she builds a life which is more fulfilling, so I don't understand why should would have wanted to return to her previous life rather than continuing on. It was a decent concept but there needed to be more time spent developing the character before the jump back in time, showing why her life was unfullfuling, and then more development of Hugo and Evie's relationship.

This was a fun, fast, predictable and altogether nice read. I kinda liked that I saw everything coming, I'm far too anxious for a complicated kinda romance rn.
The premise was intriguing and something I think about often. What would I have done differently as a teenager knowing what I know now. I would have loved to see her do more for herself though, rather than sit behind Hugo till very near the end. Their romance just dragged on for too long. I was just out here waiting for girlie to stop listening to this gaslighting asshole and get out.
P. S. The ending was not it

"Ed è proprio durante una delle interviste per il podcast che Evie si imbatte in Maximilian, una sorta di veggente, che le “consegna” la “formula magica” per trovare il vero amore.
Ed è così, che, improvvisamente, la vita di Evie cambia, forse per sempre. In bene, in male? Difficile dirlo.

“And then they kissed. It was messy and sloppy and wet and hungry and passionate and giddy and everything that would never be in a movie. And it was perfect.”

Evie Berry is a 30 year old wannabe screen writer. Spending her days managing at a cinema and making a podcast with her best friend Ben. Enters the swoon worthy man named Hugo. Hugo just happens to be one of the hottest up and coming authors with a book and movie deal!

When Evie’s not being used by her on and off again booty call “Ever-Ready Freddy” she fantasies about what life would be like if she’d met Hugo years back when he was a struggling writer.

Ben and Evie interview a psychic on their podcast and Evie’s life is catapulted ten years back and she learns the grass isn’t alway greener on the other side.

If you loved While You Were Reading and The Book Ninja this one’s for you! It was hilarious and heartbreaking and the perfect novel about reliving your twenties and learning to appreciate the people closest to you. The perfect easy read for the holidays.
