The Inn at Holiday Bay #16

Portent in the Pages

Rate this book
A heartwarming cozy mystery series about losing everything, taking a chance, and starting again.

After suffering a personal tragedy, Abby Sullivan buys a huge, old seaside mansion she has never even seen, packs up her life in San Francisco, and moves to Holiday Bay Maine, where she is adopted, quite against her will, by a huge Maine Coon Cat named Rufus, a drifter with her own tragic past named Georgia, and a giant dog with an inferiority complex named Ramos. What Abby thought she needed was alone time to heal. What she ended up with was an inn she never knew she wanted, a cat she couldn't seem to convince to leave, and a new family she'd never be able to live without.

In book 16 in the series, Abby is offered the chance to participate in an author event being held at Firehouse Books with one of her own favorite authors. When the guest author turns up dead, Abby realizes that clues to the author’s death could be found in the new novel the woman had yet to release. Using her own sleuthing skills, Abby jumps into the investigation after it becomes clear that it just might take an author to find the meaning in the pages.

Meanwhile, it is weeks before Halloween, and the inn is filled with guests looking for a spooky weekend retreat. Join Abby, Georgia, Jeremy, Nikki, and Mylie as they host a series of events designed to provide thrills and chills to all who dare to venture within.

Kathi lives with her husband, kids, grandkids, and dogs in beautiful Lake Tahoe. When she isn't writing, Kathi likes to read (preferably at the beach or by the fire), cook (preferably something with chocolate or cheese,) and garden (planting and planning not weeding). She also enjoys spending time on the water when she's not hiking, biking, or snowshoeing, the miles of desolate trails surrounding her home.
Kathi uses the mountain setting in which she lives, along with the animals (wild and domestic) that share her home, as inspiration for her cozy mysteries.

Another stunning winner by Kathi Daley in this series. Abby is bustling everywhere during this book. She has an author weekend with four other authors, plus the Harvest Festival at the inn and Thriller Fest in Holiday Bay. Of course, a murder occurs that involves a young country western star that readers have met in a previous book and then a second murder occurs in Holiday Bay. A smoothly paced story with plenty of twists, red herrings that led me completely off the path and some lovely moments of family and friendships help round this story out to a perfect afternoon read.

Portent in the Pages is the sixteenth book in Kathi Daley’s heartwarming The Inn at Holiday Bay series. Every time I pick up one of Ms. Daley’s books, I know I’m in for a treat, and I’ve never been disappointed. The well-plotted storyline flows smoothly, and multiple twists and red herrings in the complex mysteries contained within this book keep the reader engaged. The setting is charming, and the well-developed characters are three-dimensional, compassionate, and caring. I highly recommend this series to readers who enjoy well-crafted cozy mysteries.

After Abby Sullivan’s lost her husband and their infant son in a tragic accident, she moved to Holiday Bay, Maine, opened the Inn at Holiday Bay, made a new life for herself, and found a home and a family. Georgia Carter, who has also overcome obstacles in her life, is the inn’s talented cook/baker and manager, and she and her Newfoundland dog, Ramos, live with Abby, Rufus, a Maine Coon, and Molly, a terrier mix, in a cottage on the property. Georgia’s cable cooking show, Cooking with Georgia, is doing well. Jeremy Slater, who lives in the inn’s basement apartment with his young niece, Annabelle, is a valuable asset who helps with the inn’s day-to-day operations.

Halloween is just around the corner, and there are lots of events and activities taking place in Holiday Bay and at the inn, which are keeping Abby, Georgia, and Jeremy on their toes. In addition to all the usual festivities, the owner of Firehouse Books, Vanessa Blackstone, is hosting Thrills and Chills Weekend, a three-day book event, and Abby is one of five guest authors. When the keynote speaker, Chandra Levine, is discovered dead in her hotel room, Abby finds herself knee-deep in another murder investigation.

I always look forward to getting back to Holiday Bay and catching up with all the happenings at the Inn. This one had a novel plot (heh book pun) with the suspicious suicides of 2 successful celebrity women. It made for a great plot and I really enjoyed it but there were a few things that stuck out me. One was a character that I thought was going to be a bigger part of the plot than she did, which left me wondering what her purpose in the book was. And the other was that the plot meandered around in an unfocused way until the resolution of the plot came about suddenly, so there wasn't much sleuthing in this one, it was mostly rehashing until an aha! moment. It was a great plot though and I really enjoyed it, it just evolved in a different way than I expected.

Abby, Colt and the gang are getting ready for a spooky Halloween book signing when murder rears it's ugly head. Mystery abounds as they try to solve the murder and keep everyone else safe.

I love the characters in this series and this book is a wonderful addition. Highly recommended.

Dying pain

Two murders that look like suicide have Colt and Abby perplexed. I found myself skimming a lot as the author repeated scenarios several times. Felt like she had a quota of words to maintain so repeating herself fit the bill. Blah!

I love this series but this one was boring. Lots of unnecessary side stories that aren’t a part of the plot or overarching storylines. I felt like the witch guest was built up and then poof she just checks out and leaves?

Finding Hope...Beginning Again

I have read all the books in this series and intend to continue reading the series. I like the characters. Each book is about the journey of starting over at a time when life seems as if its at it darkest ( The first book in the series) each book is a step into the future and finding fulfilling moments with a new life and new opportunities and happiness in the small things that happen daily.
The past is never forgotten but decisions are made that show life does bring happiness . This was an unusual story about what can happen when people don't let go of the tragedy that happens in their life and when it crosses the line from grief to a mental illnesses. Its a reality check for all of us when we assume people have moved forward from their tragedy and they haven't. It was a bit sad to realize the reasons a mind becomes twisted. The characters who visit the inn are interesting There's one I would have thought could have been explored and perhaps she will return to the series. She was there as part of the community's Halloween Festival portrayal as a witch but she seemed as if there was a more human side to her and perhaps she had a 6th sense not in the sense of being evil but in actually being gifted. She seems to be a future character for a future series. I'm not interested in witches but someone who is really gifted from a scientific viewpoint would be interesting to read about. This series is a narrative about starting over, beginning again in spite of the setbacks, life finds a new path and begins again, and happiness continues to be found. Just turn the page...

Portent in the Pages is the 16th book in The Inn at Holiday Bay cozy mystery series. This story takes place in the charming tourist town of Holiday Bay, Maine. The main character is Abby Sullivan, a mystery writer from San Francisco who, after suffering a devastating personal tragedy, sold her condo, packed up all her belongings, bought a huge old house she had never seen in a town she had never been to, and moved to Holiday Bay, turning the huge old house into an inn.

In this story, Abby is busy getting to know and seeing to the needs of her guests, while helping with the first annual Thrills and Chills weekend book event at a local bookstore and other fall and Halloween festivities. Abby is one of five authors participating in this Thrills and Chills event. When two suspicious deaths occur, Abby works with Colt and other friends to uncover the truth.

Holiday Bay and the Inn are filled with fabulous fall and Halloween decorations, and maybe a real witch, which creates a festive and spooky setting. As always, this author’s writing flows smoothly, and her setting and relatable characters make for an enjoyable and fast-paced read.

It's hard to believe that this book is number 16 in the series. And the books get better and better!

Abby is participating in an author event being organized by Firehouse Books with one of her own favorite authors plus a few more. First, a well-known singer is dead in a manner that suggests suicide and then a guest author turns up dead in another suicide-like death. Abby realizes that clues to the author’s death could be found in the new novel the woman had yet to release.

Using her own sleuthing skills, Abby jumps into the investigation after it becomes clear that it just might take an author to find the meaning in the pages. And Abby gets some help from friends she has made while helping solve some other murders.

Meanwhile, it is weeks before Halloween and the inn is filled with guests looking for a spooky weekend retreat along with guests who are attending the authors' weekend. All in all, a busy time for Abby, Colt (the chief of police and Abby's significant other), and all of the Inn's staff.

Great book!!!!

I love this series, it gets better every book!!!!
Abby and Georgia are getting ready for a very busy weekend. Abby has a book signing weekend with four other famous authors at Firehouse bookstore first Thrills and Chills Weekend book fest. Georgia, Jeremy and Julie are getting for the Inn's Harvest festival and Holiday Bay is having their Halloween Thrillerfest.
Abby is having a few of "author stalkers" they follow authors around the country to their book signing events.
Lonnie and Colt have a gig in Bar Harbor, so Abby and Lacey go and see Loretta there a past guest from the Inn, A famous country western singer.
Loretta's been struggling with a lost in her life, and she wrote a song about. And that what the last song she sung.
But back at the book signing with Abby the headliner author failed to show up for the book signing especially after the meet and greet dinner the night before.
What is going on two women both met with an unexplained demise.
You have to get the book cause there is so much going on I don't want to spoil it!!!!!

Two well known young women at the top of their careers were both found dead from what appeared to be suicides. They had been visiting Holiday Bay when this happened. Chandra Levine, an author, was part of an event sponsored by the local bookstore where Abby was also one of the featured authors. She had read Chandra's most recent book. It was a sad story, but nothing that would have led someone to believe the writer was suicidal. Country music singer, Loretta Long, who had been a guest at The Inn during the summer also appeared to have taken her own life. Abby knew both women personally. She had talked to them shortly before their deaths and truly believed that they had a lot to look forward to. Sydney Whitmore, the criminal psychologist profiler who appeared in the previous book, helps Abby recognize the killer who is living among the citizens of Holiday Bay before they can strike again.

Abby Sullivan is doing well in Holiday Bay where she came to start over after losing her husband and infant son. In this book, it's Halloween and the inn is hosting several events. Abby is taking part in an author event at the local bookstore. When one of the authors winds up dead under suspicious circumstances, Abby thinks there may be clues in the author's latest book. Abby and Colt follow the clues to find a killer.

I've really enjoyed this series and this book is no exception. It's well-written with wonderful characters. The story is engaging and drew me in from the beginning while the relationships are well-done. The mystery will keep you on your toes and guessing throughout. I'm definitely looking forward to the next book. I highly recommend both book and series which I suggest you read in order.

Good Story

One of the things I really like about this series and this book of the series in particular is how the author has weaved stories and characters from past books into the current one. There is the terrific continuity and flow , sort of like real life where the various events come together to make a whole. For me, this story seemed back on track. A couple of the previous books left me a bit disappointed, this one did not. The story of the culprit was a bit disturbing, but certainly made an interesting twist. While I am sure that each book, including this one, can be read out of order, I really think that reading each book in order is an advantage to the reader. Good series overall, this story is excellent.

This was a sad one actually, because one of the people who died was someone that Abby and the Inn at Holiday Bay family were close to.

The main points in this read:

1. Book signing by 5 Mystery writers for a Halloween special Chills and Thrills.
2. Death by overdose of a famous singer visiting neighboring town, Bar Harbor Holiday Bay - possibly a murder and Colt must figure it out.
3. Thrillerfest event in town.
4. A possible Witch staying at the Inn named Agatha.
5. Suicide by Chandra a famous author - another killing that is a possible murder rather than self-kill.

Like all previous 15 books, most of the mysteries have been solved, but also like the previous, the next book will have answers to the rest.

Next book is The 17th of 18. The Inn at Holiday Bay: Poison in the Pudding.

Again we join Abby in the search for the truth behind two mysterious deaths, both of famous people. One, a country singer. One, an author. When the two are thought to have committed suicide, both she and her boyfriend, Colt, the local police, believe there may be more to the story. After much investigating and several brick walls, Abby happens on the possible perpetrator.
Enjoyed this very much and it also seems like the author is getting better with her dialogue. She is great with descriptions of places etc, great with creating believable characters, but the dialogue has always bogged me down a bit. Still a nice sweet cozy read. I would still love to see more of the Newfy in the story. :-)

I loved this book, back at the Inn on Holiday Bay.

In this book, the town's bookshop is playing host to an author event which Abby is part if, along with 4 other authors. As well as this, the Inn is hosting a Harvest Festival weekend, so it's all go.

When there happens to be murders to solve as well, Abby and Colt have their work cut our, especially since circumstances lead them to think they're suicides.

Add in a witch starting at the Inn, and a hotel blogger too, it's certainly never a dull moment!

I really enjoy reading these books and devour them when they are released. Best read in order to preserve continuity of the characters, the stories though are standalone.

Portent in the Pages: The Inn at Holiday Bay #16
By: Kathi Daley
Portent in the pages is installment sixteen in the series The Inn at Holiday Bay. Daley has got another winner. I really enjoyed this series. The story is well written and the characters are well developed. There is a lot going on in Holiday Bay the week before Halloween. The Inn is filled, Abby and the others are really busy, there are two deaths that is a mystery, and Abby has an author event along with four other authors she is excited about. Mysteries just keep popping up and getting better and better.

Abby is getting ready for so many things-fright night, Halloween, fall festival, authors signing, time with fans, watching her hunk perform with his band. Yes it’s an exciting weekend. Then a friend who happens to be a singer joins in on the part but ends up dead or possible suicide. Then another time f the authors turns up dead also thought to be suicide, but thing’s aren’t adding up. Do they have a serial killer of sad people or were they just too sad to say?

Well woven cozy mystery with twists and a red herring definitely kept me totally immersed and surprised at the ending. I love this series and learning more about the interesting characters and critters and all that is going on with their lives and community happenings. Then to add spice to it all, there is always new characters staying at the Inn with their own stories and even some involvement from characters from other series written by the author that are interwoven into the plot. Very well done and one I definitely recommend to all you cozy mystery lovers.

Abby is taking part in an author's forum at the local bookstore when two women are found dead from possible suicide. Neither she nor her police chief boyfriend, Colt, are convinced that either of the women killed herself.

This book is loaded with mystery, but also brings in a lot of the continuing characters and where they are in their development. Because of the inn setting and the cozy small town, the themes and suspects are ever changing, which makes it easy to stay interested and the story is very enjoyable.

Abbey is asked to be part of an author signing event and is quite flattered. Meanwhile her inn is filled to the brim with people who have come to an annual Fall Celebration. While everyone is kept very busy two mysterious deaths occur, one a well known singer, the other, an author who came for the book event. Are these deaths connected or just coincidence? Is there a serial killer in town or did these two women decide to commit suicide? There are many questions for Abbey and her friends to find answers to.

To be honest I love this series of books, the characters of Abby, Georgia, Colt and others are very familiar and so likeable. The story lines are great. The only thing that bothers me is the repetitive parts, they are almost like a cut and paste. I can see having them every once in a while for readers that did not join at book one, but this book had it for things that were introduced within the book itself. It's just a little thing, but can be frustrating when you come upon it. I am looking forward to the next book

I enjoyed this series. I feel it goes super fast this time around which makes sense as this is not a big cozy mystery. This time past inn guest Loretta is found dead of suspected suicide and famous author Chandra from slit wrist. Of course during this time their is many events happening at Holiday Bay. A lot of interesting new guests and twist and turns and I have to say the ending felt like it just happened. You get so caught up trying to solve the case and then it ends overall still a good series.

So many things about this book called to me, I had to jump in and read it straight through as soon as it hit my kindle. Halloween (of course) and all the fun events leading up to it. A multiple author event - readings and book signings and fans. Never a dull time. Toss in murder! Tragic yet intriguing.
The friends and guests at Holiday Bay and in their community have become like family to loyal readers like me. Each visit is a joy.

I love this series and can never wait for the next one to come out. This one has 2 people who are murdered and it is different from all the rest. I am not going to spoil it. I didn't figure it out until the very end. It is Fall and Holiday Bay is having Thrill fest with a real witch. The book store is having a week end event with several writers including Abbey, the amateur sleuth who teams up with Colt. If you love this series. Don't miss it and if you want to start a new series, this is it.

Written as only Kathi Daley can

This is another riveting episode of The Inn at Holiday Bay mysteries. The wonderful characters, that I've grown to love, trying to enjoy their lives when murder suddenly happens. Abby and Colt do what they do best and investigate till the end. And as usual, the ending comes as a complete surprise. Loved it. Now we wait for the next book in the series.

An author event turns deadly.

One of Abby guest turns up dead and the clues to the killer identity might be in the new book they were writing. Can she sift through the book and figure out who is the killer.

Throw in a busy inn as Halloween approaches. The gang will be busy trying to keep things a float.
