This book is the reason why I dredged through all those mediocre books. Just to find an exquisite gem like this.

I love Katrina van Tassel. She's such a refreshing character for a change. Everything about her is amazing. The people in her town kinda looked down on her, talking behind her back, calling her a tease, dragging two suitors wanting her hand in marriage. But all she wanted was someone who could accept her in all her unconventional glory.

Then one day, through an unfortunate accident, she met the Headless Horseman. That's our hero, guys. And he's such A FREAKING CINNAMON ROLL.

I can't.

Perfect Halloween Read

I don't know the original tale of Sleepy Hollow, but I enjoyed this. As always, the author paints a beautiful tale with intriguing characters.

Contains: sexual content.

Welp. This was the steamiest book I've read in a long time. Too long, to be honest. I absolutely loved this retelling of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and definitely recommend it for all fans of fantasy romance!!

I'll be honest, Katrina (the protagonist) took some time to grow on me, but once she opened up more about herself and I was able to understand her better, I really liked her. She's definitely tough, sassy, and knows what she wants. The Horseman of Sleepy Hollow is on the shorter end (I read it in just two sittings) but even so, the amount of character development Kenney packs into this is very impressive.

This is the third book I've read by this author and as usual, the writing is superb, descriptive, and keeps me coming back for more. I guarantee you will as well!

Aww, this was surprisingly (mostly) chaste and sweet! I love retellings, and The Headless Horseman is one of my favorite stories and favorites! This was a more unique twist on the horseman and involved a curse, Fae, and a vengeful wife. I won’t give it away, but I really enjoyed this quick read!

Katrina is torn between Brom and Ichabod, both of whom want her hand in marriage. However, Katrina wants fun and adventure. Sure Brom has good bones, Ichabod has good dance moves, but neither of those things make for a good husband.

One night things get out of hand between the three of them, and Katrina finds herself mortally wounded and in the care of the headless horseman himself. Only he’s not so headless and not so hessian…I’ll leave the rest to your imagination, but I had a great time reading this little book.

Oh my gosh, this was a super steamy, really well written twist on the classic Headless Horseman tale! Beautiful prose, quick pacing, and lots of swoony romance scenes, made it really easy to read this short book extra quickly!

The premise of The Horseman of Sleepy Hollow is of course that it is a retelling of Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Admittedly, I'm not super familiar with the source material beyond some pop culture references. I've never even seen the Disney adaptation. I think I might have seen part of 1999's Sleepy Hollow? Maybe. Anyway, as I (and Wikipedia) understand it, much of the elements of the story remain the same: the lovely Katrina is caught in the rivalry of her two suitors--Ichabod Crane, the Schoolteacher and Brom. Where the stories diverge, well... what if Katrina was given a third option?

I don't want to spoil too much about the Horseman himself. This take is very much inspired by Irish mythology and gives us a much... sexier character than one might expect. His relationship with Katrina and the goings-on is interesting and kept me guessing for a little while. Leave it to Kenney to turn the Headless Horseman into a swoon-worthy romantic hero.

My only regret with the characters is that the relationship between Katrina and the man she ultimately chooses is a bit rushed. It makes sense, given the length of the story. As this is a novella and a retelling of a short story, the plot is rather straightforward. There's an incident with a tree branch that almost broke my suspension of disbelief, but I was able to roll with it and enjoy the story. Honestly though, part of me wishes that there had been more story, fleshing this out to a full-blown novel. I would have liked some more romance and some more intrigue with the real evil of Sleepy Hollow. Still, the plot was sensical and enjoyable.

I really enjoyed The Horseman of Sleepy Hollow. It was a fun Halloween-time read that didn't leave me hiding under the covers. It was just the right about of spook and steam for a chilly autumn night.

This was pretty good for an Indie! Not really any complaints. The tenses changed for a paragraph, nothing I haven't done in my own fanfic, to be honest, and it was blink and you miss it, totally fine.

The plot kind of amusingly adds social commentary and stuff to a romance - a 200-page or less romance, with the word romance in the title. I like and respected the attempt to "shoot your shot", but it felt kind of shoehorned in? Like don't get me wrong, I've never consumed a Sleepy Hollow take that addressed the slaves that the Van Tassels definitely had - but expected it least of all in a smutty romp with the horseman. Very good stuff in a sense - a great plot device to show us the horseman's kindness and, pun intended, humanity. There was also an allusion to habitual self-harm showing us Katrina's not this flawless, composed society girl, and that was interesting, and a bunch of feminist rhetoric I fist-pumped at.

The hurt/comfort trope did a lot of heavy lifting in this, and I respect the hell outta that. My favorite. Honestly completely enjoyed this.

This was a really interesting take on Sleepy Hollow and the Headless Horseman.

This is a shorter romance between Katrina and the Headless Horseman. (And it’s definitely a romance, not a thriller or a mystery, in case anyone was wondering.)

I loved what the author did with each of the characters. Even the unlikable characters I really enjoyed reading about.

Everything felt true enough to the original story, the characters, and the time period, so it all made sense. Sometimes retellings can be hit or miss to me if it feels like the retelling isn’t staying true enough to the original.

I also really enjoyed Katrina and Eamon’s dynamic and banter. They were lovable together.

Lastly, I appreciated that the story was short and sweet. That’s what I was in the mood for.

If you’re a fan of Headless Horseman retellings, I’d say to give this one a try.

Really interesting retelling of Sleepy Hollow. It took me a while to warm up to Katrina because she came across as shallow and spoiled at first. But she eventually grew on me.

The beginning is also a bit slow because it takes some time for Katrina to meet the hero. The story picks up once they finally meet and their dynamic together is so good. Really enjoyed this one!!

all reviews in one place: night mode reading ; skaitom nakties rezimu

About the Book: Katrina was used to attention, suitors, and restrictions that came with it. Pressure to get married and act appropriately. Pressure to marry pragmatically, and not seek love where mere good match would be enough. But all of that changed in a single night. With one of her suitors bleeding to death at her feet, the other one running away in terror, as Headless Horseman, the Legend of Sleepy Hollow, approached.

My Opinion: You’d think as established a character as Headless Horseman would provide solid fight scenes, terror, demonic scares, maybe even steamy scenes as this is a romance retelling, the adult kind. But there was nothing. This is a very lame guy with misfortune of being this mythological entity too. There’s no plot either, as books like these never really have plot, so there’s that. And the only true pros were the fact that Katrina wasn’t an idiot, her actions had logic to them, she ran when she was asked, and fought when she needed; and the fact it’s short, so it didn’t take up too much of my time.

This has been quite an interesting spin on the Horseman from Sleepy Hollow for sure. I did appreciate the mythology behind the Headless Horseman and despite his curse, he is the sweetest creature. The slaves call him the Dark Angel and for sure I could see the gentle, caring person behind the rough exterior.

Katrina is certainly different from her peers and her determination to free those enslaved and pay them fairly for their hard work does make her the odd one out in this patriarchally focused community. So, when she finally stumbles upon someone like her, everything changes.

The two main characters were nicely balanced out and although I would have preferred a bit more time with them, it was a pleasure following them as they found strength and hope in each other.

Overall, this was a very pleasant story, quite appropriate for the season as well.

dope!

I think I’m in my horseman era, is that a thing? If not, it should be. I think this is my 5th Sleepy Hollow retelling and it was awesome and original. With supernatural beings and spicy slow burn romance. Also the hell with Ichabod and Brom, I’m down for some headless horseman lovin too if he is as delicious as Eamon. I love this version of Katrina Van Tassle too, she’s a bunch of things mixed into one and I love how when all the bullshit of societal life is removed she finds herself and what makes her happy. This book is HELLA romantic and I loved it and didn’t want it to end.

This cover does it such an injustice. Does this cover scream mmc is a virgin and super wholesome??? No. It doesn’t lol but the story was sweet and gave wonderful charmed energy. It’s a great concept and unique take on the sleepy hollow legend. Really well done. Only a splash of spice so don’t expect it to be overdone. It’s really sweet tbh.

I have loved every book Ive read by this author, but this one disappointed me. I love the legend and story of the Headless Horsemen. I have read and watched every version there is. But this one was so slow. I think I was expecting more from the story. The writing itself is good, but I think there was a lot left out. Katrina as a character was annoying with how she acted with all the men. I understand why, but she should have been up front and honest. I like her viewpoints, but her personality just ugh. I really did like Eamon! He helped Katrina grow as a person and see things differently. I still will continue to read other stories by this author. She does have a very interesting take on fairy tales and legends

The Horseman of Sleepy Hollow is a sweet, steamy retelling that I could hardly put down.

Although I’m not too familiar with the original lore behind The Horseman of Sleepy Hollow, I love the take that Kenney took with this tale. Everything from the magic, to the characters, to the chemistry was perfect!

If anything I only wish it was a tiny bit longer so we could have gotten more time with these characters but even so the story worked great with its current length.

This is another great retelling from Kenney and I’m eager to read more of her works!

Rebecca F. Kenney blocked me on tiktok after she weighed in on independent sellers offering spraying book edges as a purchasable service, and I commented asking why she deleted my comment that read "So if I pay someone to reupholster a couch, does that guy have to give a cut to IKEA?" The tiktok has since been removed, but I'm still blocked. Receipts are in a box in the back of my hard drive, if you want to try it. Ms. Kenney is 100% entitled to block me on tiktok. My butt is entitled to still hurt over it. I just wanted to make that quick disclaimer because I'm sure my throbbing butt is going to affect my review in some way. However, I already had this book from my last KU subscription while my kindle's in airplane mode, so I figured I finish it.

I really liked it. I would consider it more sweet than spicy, so if you're looking for trashy smut this spooky season, I'm sure Kenney has something else in her repertoire that fits the bill.

I think dullahans are so tragically underrepresented given how popular Irish myths are right now in the booksphere. Yet, when they do show up in popular media, they go so hard every time (Durarara!!, anyone?).

The book itself is cute. At first Katrina read a little too similarly to Louisa in Kenney's Wicked Darlings series, but I felt like she found her own footing in her prickly and selfish nature by the end of the book. There's a hard balance to strike when writing to the past with present values, and it can get a little clunky when the main character is so aggressively forward thinking while everyone else is acting appropriately to the time frame in which the book is set. I understand we're trying to marry two opposing ideals, and I don't know how I would make it better when the romance is supposed to be weighted more heavily than the narrative, if I'm being honest. Maybe if one of her parents instilled these ideas somewhere? I get the purpose of it for the sexually liberated aspect, and it's one thing if this book featured porn-logic like some of Kenney's other standalones. That wasn't the case for this one.

For example, I personally have a hard time believing a character with a "bratty" disposition hailing from heaping privilege give a damn about civil rights in 1790, particularly when she so strongly feels she is owed more than the hand that she has been dealt as a woman in that time period. I guess you could make the argument that she doesn't "fit in" in part because of these ideals, and that in turn draws her toward the love interest in the book. I also would guess that's easy to say when the main character's financially secure from page 1. I don't know, did we really need like 4 lines on the main characters' feelings about racial discrimination and classism in this 231 page book about fucking a headless horseman?? Like, more power to you, but also what the fuck?

Speaking of, it's not a terribly long novel. Neither is the source material, so I wouldn't expect it to be. Previously, I wasn't picking up Kenney's books for epic world building and sagas spanning decades, so I was totally fine with it. I just wanted a spooky romance book for spooky season, and I got it. I don't think I would purchase this book, but I'm not mad I was able to experience it through a subscription based service like Kindle Unlimited.

This was such a sweet and cute story. It still has a lot of dark elements because it's a Sleepy Hollow retelling. In this version The Horseman isn't what he seems and Katrina sees that for herself. Like imagine The Horseman saves you and takes care of you. If that sounds like something you might be into, then this story is for you. Plus it's perfect for spooky season!
There is some spice but it's very mild and not super detailed. It's much more romantic and plot focused.

All telling not much showing.
Not super steamy either.
I can tell I’m not really into a book when I start nitpicking.

Book: give him an Irish accent
Me: Why would this man have a different accent if he grew up nearby?

Meh.
