Incubus Inc. #3

(Minor Spoiler and Warning at the bottom of the blurb. Please read all the way through.)

Sameerixis, or Sam for those who actually know him, isn’t what you’d call normal.

He had been a door-to-door salesman, of sorts.

One that peddled wares, wishes, and whims to anyone willing to pay his prices.

Except that life is gone now.

His old business model had been modernized. Email, phone contacts, letters, flyers, business cards, and scheduled consultations.

Sam was a man trapped in place by his own success.

And loving it.

Additionally, he was also the owner of a Private Military Company that specialized in dealing with criminals or those wanted by a government.

His goals were simple. Rebuilding his strength, establishing a comfortable life for himself and others, and taking from Jenaphila as much as he could.

Now though, he’s gotten exactly what he wanted in the worst possible way.

Jenaphila front and center with as much of her empire as he can grab. While she goes after him directly and with vengeance.

Everything is changing faster than Sam would like it to. Heading right toward what might just be the end of the prime plane itself.

Warning: This novel explores dark subjects, and what people will give up of themselves, and each other, to get what they want. The main character is written as a demon from another plane in a tough situation, and will not make choices that line up with societal and cultural norms.

It contains adult themes and moral ambiguities.

As with my previous work, explicit scenes are found within. It has violence and a harem relationship.

Honestly, this is one of the books you read when you want not to think...
But the 3rd installment has absolutely no plot, there are so many female characters that it's hard to even remember who they are in the story, and they are becoming more meaningless with each passing page

So, my personal verdict is: It was OK, helped me cool of my mind

Incubus Inc. III (Incubus Inc., #3) by Randi Darren continues the gripping saga of Anthony, a man thrust into the complex world of magic, politics, and debauchery, where his very survival depends on his growing powers and understanding of the intricate balance between desire and duty. Darren's third entry in the series maintains the dark, sensual tone of its predecessors while expanding the stakes, relationships, and world-building, but not without certain flaws that may test the patience of even the most loyal fans.

Plot Development:

In this installment, the story largely revolves around Anthony’s attempt to consolidate his power within the world of succubi, incubuses, and various other supernatural entities. The political intrigue is taken up several notches as Anthony navigates dangerous relationships, both romantic and strategic, trying to balance them while keeping his humanity intact. Darren does a commendable job of making Anthony’s choices feel genuinely impactful to the narrative, which makes for a compelling, albeit sometimes convoluted, story.

“In the end, power is all about knowing when to use it—and when to keep it hidden.”

However, the complexity can sometimes veer into overwhelming territory. While the plot is meant to be layered, it occasionally feels bogged down by excessive subplots. At times, Darren juggles too many ideas at once, leaving certain story threads unresolved or underdeveloped. Readers who are fans of multi-layered storytelling will find this enjoyable, but others may find it too distracting.

Characterization:

Anthony’s character remains the central focus of the story, and his evolution in this book is particularly noteworthy. He is still caught between his mortal nature and the monstrous temptations that come with his newfound incubus abilities. Darren portrays this inner conflict with depth, and it makes Anthony a more nuanced character compared to earlier installments.

His romantic entanglements, though at times indulgent, also serve as a lens through which his growth is reflected. Relationships with characters like Lily and Claire highlight different facets of his personality, though some of these relationships still fall into the trap of feeling like power fantasies rather than organic development.
The side characters, while colorful, tend to exist mainly to prop up Anthony’s journey, often lacking the depth needed to make them feel as fleshed out as they could be. That said, a few do shine, especially those with conflicting interests to Anthony’s own.

World-Building:

The world Darren has constructed continues to be one of the series' major strengths. The magical system and supernatural politics are compelling, and the expansion of these elements in Incubus Inc. III adds more intrigue to the story. The exploration of incubus culture and its intersection with human morality is well-handled and thought-provoking. That said, Darren still employs an extensive amount of exposition, which, while useful, can sometimes feel heavy-handed, slowing down the narrative's pace.

Themes and Tone:

Thematically, Incubus Inc. III delves deeper into the ideas of power, control, and self-identity. Darren doesn't shy away from pushing boundaries in terms of sexuality, consent, and the ethics of magical manipulation. These themes are inherently provocative, and readers should be prepared for some uncomfortable moments. It's a bold move on Darren's part, but one that might alienate certain audiences, especially those less interested in the explicit nature of the content.

The tone of the book remains dark and seductive, but also somewhat self-aware. At times, the narrative seems to revel in its over-the-top situations and characters, embracing a kind of pulpy charm that can be fun, but also risks losing its emotional core in the process.

Conclusion:

Overall, Incubus Inc. III is a complex continuation of the series that fans of the first two books will likely appreciate. Its intricate world-building and character development make for a compelling read, but the increasingly convoluted plot and indulgent aspects may detract from its potential for broader appeal.

“Power comes at a price, and the question is—how much are you willing to pay for it?”

Recommendation:

For long-time fans of the series: This book provides a lot of what you’ve come to love. It’s darker, deeper, and more intense, with the same level of eroticism and intrigue that made the earlier books captivating.
For new readers: You’ll definitely want to start with the first book. Jumping into Incubus Inc. III without the context of the previous books will leave you lost and potentially frustrated.

So this whole series seems pointless.

Unless you have read everything else, all the other crossover books, this hardly seems relevant. It has no story to support itself. It is purely added content to the others. As wrap ups go, this was very disappointing.

Finishes brilliantly, but a bit lacking in the middle

This is a suitable end to the series, but it feels a bit lacking somehow. It continues on with the main plot, whereas the previous book seemed more concerned with what was essentially a series of side quests, but I didn't find it as entertaining. Perhaps its that most of the cast of characters that have been built up to this point are ignored for most of the book, and only a small handful are the focus. I don't know. The ending was excellent, though, with the meta-plot tie-in being wrought through far more expertly than most of the author's other endings.

There are some rather large plot holes in the second half, though. For the first time in his many series writing under two different names, the author has fallen into the too-common trap of having a powerful hero sometimes just be a completely useless dweeb for no explained reason. Sam seems to forget some of his abilities or just not use them. I get it: once you make a very powerful character it's hard to come up with ways to counter that power, but usually this author manages it quite elegantly. Not here.

There's also another name change to fit in with the meta-plot that runs through the different series, and again is handled poorly. After knowing Jena for hundreds or thousands of years, there's just no way the characters would start using her new name that quickly and consistently.

Writing quality has at least improved again from the previous book, but the author's usual suspects continue: dangling participles, using conjugations of "to lay" where "to lie" is the correct verb, incorrect "I" or "myself" instead of plain old "me", "leverage" used as a verb (even in a section where the correct "lever" was used, too!), inappropriate dialectic idioms, and so on. It's good for a self-published KU book, but needs a proofreader to really shine.

This starts as all the rest do. At this point, all the books are the same, and they are just wearing different faces and names. They all behave the same.

I understand that an Incubus has lots of sex, that is how they feed after all... but this book was just off. The author is reusing the same archetype over and over. i.e. The Strong protagonist, even though having to handle more than eight women, loves them deeply and finds time to show them this... with his crotch.

I don't know if the author tying together all his books caused them harm or not, because to me, it seems the author is getting worse with each new book. But that can also be because the author has a terrible track record with ending the trilogies.

Great first books (that makes you want to try the sequel), middling second books, and rushed almost phoned in third books (because he tries to end them with this big conflict, and of course the protagonist is separated from everyone, so he has to rely on himself).

I really did not enjoy this much, the repetitive smut made my experience worse.

Maybe the author having a set in concrete publishing schedule makes the work suffer? Because he has a deadline he can't take time to craft better?

Wow jump in the water’s fine!

First off this author is one of the best.
Second, it’s all connected… all of the stories connect to all of the others. It adds so much depth.

Now where are we here…critical mass!!! I think this might be the first trilogy I didn’t feel was stand alone. Not a bad thing. We now have so many plot threads swinging in the breeze this story starts connecting and building the bridges.

Is this for a first reader of the stories? Not really, and this pen name is the hardcore version of the author. So really, what better way to have an ultimate tie in trilogy. This one is for the fans. The hardcore readers, with the hardcore pen name. You can start here, but I would really recommend Super Sale on Super Heroes, or Wild Wastes, or Dungeon Desposed or Swing Shift. All great ways to start. Then you’ll read the rest, and re read and buy the borg… I mean the complications. Wow it’s a fun ride. Glad I’ve been assimilated since the start, jealous I’m not you starting the journey fresh.

A excellent continuation of Sam's story

I like the way the author writes how all the characters interact with each other and they seem three-dimensional and not just two dimensional. The story has lots of action I intrigue and mystery and of course there is a lot of sex which you can skip it doesn't really take away from the story but it does cement the romance and love that Sam has for his women. As well as the lust too can't forget that oh well I still enjoyed the story it had a lot to offer and I would be interested in Reading more of what happens.

Getting Tired

I’m a big Randi Darren fan, but I’m afraid this series is getting unbalanced. The story concept is solid, but the characters are no longer captivating. The idea of Sameerixis is interesting but the character development is too “G” rated. It seems to be a conflict, with detailed adult situations in a harem setting and everyone is basically a good person; especially when several are citizens of hell. Currently there are too many character conflicts even for fantasy.

To End The Universe Or Not To End The Universe? That Is The Question!

The Sameerixis centered trilogy is complete, but the war between Zeus and Runner continues through multiple planes (and intermeshing trilogies).

This novel, the trilogy of which it is a part, and the other trilogies with which it interconnects may interest those who like broad, intricate plots and extensive character development. Those who like erotica and Harem fantasies will find a lot to enjoy in this novel and those it connects to as well.

Is this It? Hope Not:)

Enjoyed the series, more or less managed to keep the names of the various Succubus, Imp, Demon, & other hot, sexually demanding & insatiable women straight. Little disappointed that Sam is becoming a little too much of a sensitive New Age Guy, but it doesn't seem to slow down his decisions to sex every new female character introduced to the story. Atta Boy - Right?!😄 Decent writing, but still pretty juvenile, adolescent plots. So, All Good!

4.5. Very good as usual, but not clearing the bar for "great". It wraps up another trilogy, filling in even more gaps in the Runnerverse, so is required reading if you're following that.

I find I'm enjoying the Arand fade-to-black books more these days, as there is a lot of sex here that I just skim through. Yes, it's a book about sex demons, so sex is not unreasonable, but to each their own. If you've read to this point you know what to expect, and there is an actual story here, hence the good rating.

These are still...

Completely worthy of the five stars they get, the references the action the twists the turns the feels, this series was full, and this book was a great lid to it.
One things that was also well played, was we got the lore with the lewd, as a Darren novel goes, it wasnt missing out.

More Answers and a good conclusion to the trilogy

Wow we learned a lot with this book and more strings are drawn to the other Arand Series. Can't wait to see the next round of series as the build up is almost there.

Spoiler:

Do you think Sandra really died or will we see her elsewhere? Similar to Rykers daughter.

This was a bittersweet ending to this trilogy. I thought knowing the main character would survive this series and appear in other books in the future meant the stakes were not as high. But the ending brought some consequences in that definitely are felt in the other books tied directly to this series.

Another solid end to a very fine trilogy. Lot of intricate ties to the author's other trilogies. It is well written and edited. I anxiously await the finale series.

Pretty good

I should have reread the first two books before reading this one. It's a lot of events characters and plot lines to keep track of. But I picked up on the plot line pretty easily and really enjoyed the book. Looking forward to the next book in the series

Decent.

A decent new addition to the universe. It does a fun job of tying various elements together and filling in some details, even though we’ve already read multiple books in the future of this world.

Impressive

At this point in the be colossal mythology the hardest thing is not only to hold it together, but also move it forward. The co- authors have done this which is seriously impressive.

Shrek Shrine?

Misleading I know. Anyway plot and timeline consistency are very well handled.

Pick up anything almost anywhere and you'll feel like a smart cookie.

Another great addition to the shared universe the story takes place in.
