5 stars!!! Wow, I’m obsessed with this book truly!! I’ve never read the steampunk before, but I was looking on my library app for what enclave audiobooks they had and this one looked intriguing so I picked it up and this blew me away!!!! I listened to the majority of this book in three days and when I was listening, I was so immersed in the story I didn’t wanna put it down!!!
What's lurking in the Mist is the least of their worries...
⟡ Steampunk vibes ⟡ Slow-burn Romance ⟡ Found Family ⟡ Airships ⟡ Political Intrigue
The world of this story is was definitely one of my favorite aspects. Steampunk is a genre of science fiction that has a historical setting and typically features steam powered machine machinery rather than advanced technology. I loved the blend between the 19th century Victorianism and the airships and science-based zombies and the deadly mist covering much of the land. It was just the perfect!!!
Cas, our main character, had her family die in the mists years ago and she has been living on and off the streets ever since until she attempts to steal some food from an airship and ends up being invited onto the crew. Cas becomes a diver someone that will dive from the airships into the mists to scavenger. Diving is dangerous job because the land developed by the mist are overrun with these the Turned and the mist is breathe without a mask is deadly. But Cas comes to love the job and the flying! I loved watching her find a place in the world and how she grew to trust and love her captain, the ship and her new life! I’m struggling to describe why but she’s definitely one of my favorite female main character I’ve read about. I feel like the author did such a good job making her feel like a strong heroine because that’s who she’s had to be, but also feel feminine. It felt like a very realistic depiction of someone that’s been hardened by the world instead of being the strong female character trope. Through meeting Theo and the crew of the Daedalus, Cas begins to see a true team and true friendships should look like in the beauty of selflessness and relying on others
Theo is a member of one of the five families who are the rulers of this society. Theo has always believed there must be some way to eradicate the mists and has spent his life searching for this solution without any avail. When Theo learns a secret about the mist that has been in his family for generations, he takes it as his personal mission to stop the mist from rising and ends up hiring the airship Cas is on to help him. I absolutely loved Theo‘s character. He is a bookish noble-hearted hero who wants what’s best for the world, even if that goes against with the other members of power believe. When Theo learns a secret about the mess that has been in his family for generations He’s such an honorable guy who’s just trying to help others and be selfless, no matter how it may hurt him. And I really enjoyed watching him start to fall for Cas as well... I can't wait for more of their dynamic and friendship moving forward.
I absolutely loved both of our main characters and all of the political intrigue that they have to wrestle with. I also love the small touches of faith elements.
And that cliffhanger — wow I'm so glad I had the next book immediately!!!
Content: some in world swear words, the beginnings of a romance. The Turned (the world name for the zombie creatures) isn’t graphic or very descriptive at all. I didn’t find it disturbing in the least.

{ Minus a full star for those who do not like zombie-like creatures or mentions of dead bodies. }
Well, that was really interesting.
…I think I start off too many of my reviews that way. Oh, well. It was interesting.
I wasn’t sure what I would think about this book. I’ve read a few steampunk books before, but most of them didn’t have any faith content. This one did in a dystopian/allegory-like way (there’s another name for God), which worked well for the story. I look forward to seeing Cass grow more on this in the second book.
My main negative about the story would be the zombie-like creatures in it. Now, it is said that a Turned (a person who breathed in the Mist (the poisonous spores/air)) is just a mode of transportation of the virus, the actual person is looked upon as being dead and their soul is elsewhere. (Where exactly? Cass isn’t sure.) I’m so not into zombies or anything close to that, so I was really hesitating reading this book once I found out it had those elements in it. But, learning that it’s not an actual person anymore made it a bit more bearable to read about. But only a bit. Some of the descriptions of the decomposing of bodies were too much for my tastes, so warning to those who have active imaginations and weak stomachs like me. This is why I put the ratings a touch lower and have that note above.
Since this book ended on a cliffhanger and I’m very curious about what will happen next, I definitely plan on reading the sequel when it releases.
I follow Enclave Publishing's social media and found out about Secrets in the Mist the second it was announced. It immediately grabbed my attention because I need more steampunk in my life. Then it briefly lost my attention because someone, somewhere clarified that the "undead" referenced in the synopsis are actually zombies and my sensitive-to-violence brain said "nope". But then I saw an interview with Busse herself who talked about the inspiration behind the story and promised that while there are zombies, she doesn't do gory yuck and mainly uses them and the mist to investigate certain deep themes. Having read and adored her Ravenwood Saga books, I decided I trusted her enough to give Secrets in the Mist a chance. I'm glad I did.
Yes, there are zombies (they're called Turned in this steampunk world) but aside from the typical physical description of being decaying bodies that shamble around (slowly) chasing people who dare enter the mist, there isn't any brain eating going in here. Even when the characters occasionally have to fight off the Turned, it never ever gets gross. I felt Busse handled the whole thing very tastefully and never once had my anxiety get triggered in a bad way that would make me want to put the book down. So, now that I've addressed the one thing that was of particular concern for me, let's talk about the story!
I looooved our two main characters, Cass and Theo. They come from such different backgrounds and it was interesting to see their different perspectives on this threatening world in which they live. Busse did an amazing job of making the world feel so real and showing realistic ways that people of different classes would be trying to survive in it. For Cass, who grew up poor, most of her life was about survival. Finding food, avoiding the "Purges" (shoving people into the mist to kill them, then burning the Turned bodies) that the government did to those people living near the edge of the mist when the population grew to a point of overcrowding the mountaintops where the air is still clean.
For Theo, a son of one of the five wealthy families that control everything, things are much easier because the rich people live near the tops of the mountains, or even in mansions on floating sky islands. They can travel, get educations, and rarely worry about food or being too close to the mist. But unlike the others, Theo does care about the fact that everyone has become so numb to the "Purges" and begins to theorize what would happen if there was some way to destroy this mist.
You'd think everyone in the world would support Theo in his desire to find a cure for the mist, but something Busse does so well is showing exactly why someone of means *wouldn't* want that. I won't spoil it, but it was frighteningly realistic.
I loved seeing how Busse brought Cass and Theo together, and being strung along by the mystery of a possible cure, but also wondering what might happen to get in their way.
I will say that I wasn't initially *quite* as gripped by this story as, say, the Ravenwood Saga for the simple sake that it seemed easier, after a certain character is introduced, to guess at what the solution to the mist might be and I was afraid I knew what was going to happen (while also wondering if there was really going to be enough conflict for an entire second book). but then the ending. THE ENDING!!! How naïve I was in thinking there wouldn't be enough conflict. That final chapter had me gripped all the way through, and just when I thought I'd predicted what would happen, BOOM, Busse smacked me with something unexpected and I just... *flailing intensifies* HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO WAIT UNTIL AUGUST 2022 TO FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENS??? This is totally unfair and should qualify as reader torture! Torture, I say!
Well, seeing as I can't control publishing choices, no matter how unfair they may be I guess I just have to wait. But in the meantime I wholeheartedly recommend Secrets in the Mist to all fantasy and steampunk lovers, even the ones like myself who might otherwise be turned off by zombies. Truly, I felt it was all handled so well, and Busse is quickly becoming a favorite author for me!
Content Advisory:
Violence:
As stated in the review there is absolutely NONE of the gore typically associated with zombies to be found in this book. The Turned do have the typical scary zombie descriptions of rotting and/or mummified bodies and they do chase people in large numbers, but this is never overdone, or even the real focus of the story. At no point do they eat brains or even harm anyone "on screen". (It's implied that they killed one person, but the reader only learns that it happened afterwards.)
Some Turned are "killed" (It's actually the controlling mist spores inside the empty bodies being killed. It's stated that the actual human soul has long ago departed from the body.) via incendiary bullets used to shoot and set them on fire, thus destroying the spores, but any description of burning bodies is fleeting and undetailed. Sometimes characters resort to hitting the Turned with sticks, boards, or fists in self defense. This is also without any graphic description.
A woman is attacked by strangers in an alley and a fight between them ensues. Nothing graphic or sexual happens, but punches and kicks are exchanged by both the attackers, victim, and eventual rescuer. The woman has a black eye and cuts by the end, and the attackers end up being punched unconscious.
Another fist fight occurs between a man and an attacker. Again, the attacker is punched unconscious. Blood is mentioned from cuts on the attacker's face and on the knuckles of the man defending himself.
The reader witnesses someone "Turn" after tragically loosing their mask and breathing mist. The description is more sad than yucky as the body only twitches until it lays still: the implication being that the human soul inside is now gone and the spores are taking over the body. The next time the body is seen, it is walking around as a "Turned."
Sexual:
Mild attraction between a man and a woman.
A man briefly acts flirtatious toward Theo's sister, but it never goes anywhere.
Language:
None. "Gales" is used as an exclamation occasionally.
Magic:
This is solidly a streampunk fantasy, (the Victorians thought the future of technology was steam. Steampunk is a fantasy world that imagines things as if they were correct and everything is powered by steam, and gears, and the like instead of electricity.) which means all happenings have scientific basis, even if some of it is fictional science.
What a story!! I don’t know how to put into words how incredible this book is. This is the kind of book that makes me wish there was a higher rating than five stars because it’s just THAT GOOD.
I was drawn into this story instantly! The characters are so wonderfully written, I was sucked into their adventure, heart and soul and enjoyed every second of it. Cass and Theo were such perfect narrators and I loved both of their POVs equally—which is pretty rare for me not to have a favourite. They’re both just so epic!
I couldn’t stop turning pages throughout this whole book. From cover to cover, this is just all-around epic, eerie, heart-capturing, beautiful, gasp-worthy and an absolute reread for me! I can’t shout it’s praise loud enough!! Morgan Busse’s writing is incredible and she’s outdone herself with this adventure!
I received a complimentary copy from the author and was not required to write a positive review.
This was an enjoyable read from a favorite author. Tantalizing mystery, great characters, and a rich and deadly steampunk world kept me engage right to the end—speaking of, rude, just rude to have a cliffhanger ending! I've gotta know what happens next!
Loved this!😍 I listened to the audiobook, and I just love this narrator. I have loved every book I have listened to her read. I didn’t like the cliffhanger ending, but I’ve got Blood Secrets queued and ready to go.☺️
My first Christian fantasy book and I loved it. The story of the mist that covered the earth and people have to live up high to protect themselves. IF you are poor you have to worry about a purge that happen often. Selene is poor and on her own since the age of 14, given a chance on a ship as a diver she embarks on a new journey. When the diving crew is given a job and some didn't make it back Selene does what ever it takes to save the ship and her family on the ship. A new job comes and she has to go back to the planet, can she face her fears once again. Damien is out for the cure for the mist can he and Selene find it and save themselves in the process. Loved this book. What I like it is an adult fantasy that doesn't deal with sex but in forgiveness and the trust in God. Everyone has that trust but Selene. Can she face her fears and put her trust in God alone. Now I have to wait for book 2! I can't wait to see what happen next!!
First off, what you did to the Daedalus in the end was sooo not cool *crosses arm and glares*, I MUST KNOW WHAT'S GONNA HAPPEN NOW!!
It's been a while since I've read a steampunk/dystopian novel and I adored this one. I fell in love with Ms. Busse's writing after reading the Ravenwood trilogy (which I'd totally recommend, so go read it!!) and had high expectations for this book. Thankfully, "Secrets in the Mist" delivered in more ways than one! Although not my favourite of her books (the Ravenwood's definitely claims that spot) I did really like the aspects of the mist and the five ruling families from the House of Lords.
Theo and Cass we're great main characters and I'm excited to see where the next books will take them. Overall my only issue is that it was pretty slow paced (which is the reason it took me so long to read XD) but picked up towards the end and the cliffhanger makes the next book a necessity!

OTHER NOTES Another amazing book from my favourite Christian authour!! Recommend 12-13+ for violence.
Overall: 5/5, 8/10 Plot and Storyline: 4.5/5 Characters: 5/5 Ages 13+ for violence and intense action sequences
Literally, I had an audible reaction when I read the last words. Quite literally, it played out like this: I read the last words, then, I actually loudly gasp, then I can’t even find my voice to go above a whisper, but I manage to mutter, “No.” followed by, “No, no, no, no, no.” I was in pure denial. Yep. Pure and utter outrage.
As with all Morgan Busse books, I was quite intrigued with the concept of this, possibly even more than her other books because you just can’t go wrong with epic characters fighting in a steampunk zombie apocalypse with some wicked machinery. Now that is a truly original and creative tale.
Before I continue, here are some specifics...
-Would I read again? Totally. -Would I recommend? Who wouldn’t?! -Did I disregard everything I needed to do and refuse to put the book down, ending up reading the entire thing in one day, split between two short sittings? YES. -Will I continue the series? Absolutely not. JOKING! I’m totally joking. There is no possible way I won’t continue the series. I mean, seriously, I shouldn’t even have this in my review because the answer should be obvious. Really. -Short and sweet: I um...loved it? If you haven’t gotten that impression this far into my review then you have issues, because I have some serious fangirl problems with this book because it’s so. Stinking. Good. -One word review: Epic
Anyway! I adored the characters, like, a lot. Like, I need a therapist because of the freaking ending because I have to know what happens to *cough*, *cough*, *cough*, and um, *cough*.
I will say this. Morgan Busse is not scared to rip apart your heart. Fair and blunt warning here. If I cried at books (which there is only one book I have ever cried at, and I shall not say the title because it incites depressing reminders of someone dead, and yes, this someone is fictional, and yes, I’m crazy weird), I would have cried at this book. That’s all I’m gonna say.
Y’all. Aren’t the gentle side characters the best? Well guess what. Busse definitely is aware of my weakness: those kind and loving side characters that I adore more than anyone else. Boy, can she tug on my emotions with that.
I really, really loved Cass. She was so bold, yet real, and tough, but caring. She wanted to do the right thing and help others but was afraid to ask for help herself, showing a good example of a character that was well thought out and real. So, Kudos to Morgan Busse for creating a relatable and likable model for the readers.
I have loved all of Morgan’s books, and I can honestly say that I’m unable to pick a favorite. So, without further ado, go read the dang thing! And don’t even get me started on this stunning cover! And y’all, that ending was torture. Pure torture.
Also, as a side note, I am not a romance person. Ever. I don’t read romance books or watch romance movies. I have many, many issues with romance stories that drive me nuts, so I won’t get into that rant right now, but as far as this book review goes, I hate it when a romance takes over the plot of a story, and insta-love, so I can only tolerate books that don’t have these issues. So I greatly applaud Morgan Busse for keeping the romance so minimal and not instant romance, as she has with her other books as well.Thank you!
Special, special thanks to Morgan Busse and the publisher for giving me an ARC that I devoured in just a couple of hours! Thank you so much!
Um, may I first say that I'm a lil upset right now!
Okay, so this was the first Morgan Busse book I've read, but it will certainly not be the last. This was a fairly easy, fairly quick read. I spent a few evenings reading to wind down and then finished the last third this morning because it was my day off.
I have to say the book was beautifully paced. I was really surprised that it felt more like an adventure than a thriller. There was a slow, steady build toward the climax and it was really pleasant to unfold the world and story a layer at a time. It felt like I got to explore the story and the book, which was kind of a new experience for me. I guess I heard there were zombies (which I must note, I don't love zombies, but these were okay and I'm suspicious that there's more going on there so I'm curious and hanging in there!) and a massive cliffhanger so I just expected it to be some page-turning, suspenseful whirl of a steampunk ride. But it was calmer than that with a few tense scenes that definitely spiked the heartrate, and for some reason, I really liked that.
The world was interesting and fleshed out really naturally. I really liked how Cass stumbled upon stained glass for the first time. (I may or may not be partial to stained glass myself XD) I really fell in love with Cass's view of the world and felt like I grew with her as she grew to trust and love her captain, crew, ship, and new life. Theo was a pleasant surprise, too. (Confession: I didn't read the blurb; I just bought the book because I heard the author speak and decided I needed to get to know her characters!) I didn't realize the book had two povs and his character was such fun. I loved the bookish, noble-hearted hero and it was a joy to see him step out in courage and deal with his own difficult feelings. I'm absolutely looking forward to seeing more of these two as they navigate the world in the next book.
And since we're here, I just have to address that cliffie in a non-spoilery way: WHAT THE HECK?! Okay, so I told y'all I had heard there was a jaw-dropping cliff hanger before hand (actually part of why I bought the book was because it came so highly recommended). I spent the last third of the book trying to prepare for it, coming up with every possibility I could think of, and she still managed to do something unexpected! Also, I was sure I could be okay with any of the other options I came up with--I'd be upset, but I could deal with it--and what she did just kind of ripped my heart out a little. Like, what now? This was a blow I was not prepared for and I am. U.P.S.E.T.
Content: there isn't any swearing and there's not a lot of graphic violence (there is a little fist fighting and some gunfire, but it's pretty PG). The description of the Turned (zombie creatures) is a little gruesome here or there, but it was well balanced and not really disturbing (to me personally, anyway). There's not much romance, but there is a little potential ship developing and some shy interactions between the two MCs, and there is one scene where you can imagine some thugs didn't have good intentions, but nothing happens. I'd probably say the book is safe for an early teen or a pre-teen.
So let's start with a disclaimer first: I am not fully done with this book! Not because it's not intriguing and captivating but because I am still trying to get settled in from our move and its been crazy trying to unpack boxes, start back into the routine of homeschooling, get used to a new area and the list can go on! So I will do my review from where I stopped reading. I am about 80% through the book so I am almost there ya'll!
I knew I should've started this one as soon as I got it but when moving I procrastinated! Silly me! This book is amazing!! This is my first time reading a steam punk story and I think I am somewhat hooked, at least I am to this story and this world the author has created. The characters are amazing and so wonderfully written you are immediately sucked in not only in their world but their adventures. Cass and Theo are truly perfection. I must admit that I am not a huge fan of zombies or anything related to that but here the "Turned" just made perfect sense.
This is my first by this author and it definitely won't be my last, especially since a little birdie told me this book ends with a cliffhanger (NOOOO!!) and we must wait until the next one to find out what happens! Now I promise I will finish it soon but in the meantime go grab this if you need some adventure in your life and a new genre to try out!
I received a copy of this book. I was not required to post a positive review. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
I loved this book! The mystery, action, adventure, atmosphere, found family, high stakes, and the beginnings of romance--its all there!
This book really reminded of World War Z fir the zombies, The Mummy 2 for the dirigible travel, and a Doctor Who episode for the scary things hidden in the mist-- very entertaining!
There were a few intense on the seat of your pants scenes and man, the cliffhanger!! I am immediately starting the 2nd book!
Content: a few mild descriptions of grotesque things
Wow. I am blown away. I have owned this book since it came out in 2021 but never got around to reading it and I regret not reading this sooner. I was hooked from page one and I had such a hard time putting this book down. I am so excited to read book 2!! I need to figure out what happens to Theo, Cass, and the crew of Daedalus especially after how this book ended. I absolutely loved the plot and premise of this book, it is so unique and so captivating. Ugh, I loved this book so, so much!!
I highly recommend this book! I am not normally a fan of “zombie” books but this one is so good and not really your average zombie book. I cannot wait to see how Theo and Cass put their differences aside and work together to put an end to the mist. These characters are just so amazing and I loved them all so dearly, especially Theo and his relentless pursuit of truth and wanting to truly change the world for good. I cannot wait to see his and Cass’ development in the next book!!
Woah. What just happened? Too much. I can't comprehend it all. All I know is I NEED the second book!!
Theo is the absolute sweetest. I liked him from the beginning and what he did at the end... 🥰 My heart's still recovering. Cass is just a ball of spitfire. I like that. She's a lot of fun and just what Theo needs to offset him. They're such a perfect pair!!
I have to honest though. I don't know if I was stupid or what but I didnt realize the "turned" were actually... Zombies?? That was really weird and more than a little creepy. To be honest, I would have dnfed it if I would have found that out sooner. But, as it happened, I didn't realize that until around 60% and there was no way I was stopping there. I was hooked. Still, felt I should enclose that for other unsuspecting readers like me.
Overall, that was an emotional rollercoaster. I'm sure I will be thinking on this book for days and all the things the next book better remedy. Morgan L. Busse is a very talented author I am finding out and I am an avid fan!
This one felt SUPER short. Like it was--250 pages--but it felt a little shorter than the story needed it to be. But I could see it being a super fun first season of a show, so I'm okay with that. Just means I need a sequel that much sooner ;)
This was an enjoyable read. The steampunk atmosphere was the highlight of it for me. The characters were likable but nothing stood out about them. I liked the storyline enough to continue it was pretty unique for a Christian Fiction. I am hoping though that the next book kicks it up a notch. Overall clean read.
It took me a while to get into this book, but once I did I was hooked! Zombie like creatures, steampunk cities, and ballon ships? Yes please! I’m very glad I have book two already because what the literal heck with that ending?!
At first, I was hesitant about this book due to the possibility of there being zombies. But, it being written by Morgan L. Busse, I decided to give Secrets in the Mist a chance. I’m happy I did. I’m not a big steampunk fan, so I can’t compare Secrets in the Mist to other books in the genre, but it has to be one of the best steampunk books ever written.
First, the settings. Incredible. The way the mountain towns and the land beneath the mist were described is masterful. I felt like I was there, whether hiding with Cass, peeking into the church, or scouting out the dangers lurking beneath the mist.
Second, the characters. Cass is a survivor, a spitfire, and an all-around well written heroine. I enjoyed her mechanical nature and spunkiness. Theodore comes from a lifestyle opposite Cass. I liked his curiosity and unwavering determination. The secondary characters are wonderful, as well. My favorite character is Patterson, a cranky old man who shows he cares by fussing over those around him. Those who’ve read this book will understand my indignation about what happened at the end (please, please let there be a plot twist).
Third, the plot. As aforementioned, I was hesitant at first. I want nothing to do with zombies or the disgusting twisting of the supernatural. I was delightfully surprised. Some might describe the Turned as zombies, but I don’t. There are no supernatural forces involved in Turning. Instead, a reasonable, well-thought out medical and scientific explanation is provided.
Even if you’re not a steampunk fan (think Victorian Era mixed with odd mechanical creations), you need to add Secrets in the Mist to your reading list. Well done, Mrs. Busse. I can’t wait for Book Two.
I received an ARC of this book, and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
A deadly Mist has covered part of the world, turning people into undead monsters. In order to control the population in the remaining portion of the world, purges are used by the higher-ups to eliminate the poor. Cass, a girl who lost her home and family to the Mist, has spent years struggling to find places to sleep and food to eat. But then she finds a home on the Daedalus where she takes on the job of diving into the Mist. Meanwhile, Theo is the rich son of one of the five powerful ruling families. Unlike the others, he wants to eradicate the Mist, but his investigation will uncover secrets and draw negative attention that just might get him killed.
Steampunk zombie apocalypse? Yes please! First of all, the world-building here is so fascinating to me! I’m really hoping that we learn more about it in the next book. On top of the freaky Mist and creepy zombies, there are beautiful cities and sky islands and so many other interesting things! And then there are the characters. Cass and Theo both are strong-willed when they choose to be, and their determination to rid the world of the Mist is what drives them forward. There were a lot of moments in this book that hurt my heart, but the ending in particular left me shocked! Talk about a cliffhanger! I will definitely be reading the next book! I would recommend this to fans of zombies, steampunk, or YA fantasy books with intriguing world-building!
Story Rating: 9.5/10 Christian Faith Rating 2/3 Secrets in the Mist is a Steampunk novel. It is a fantasy story set in a Victorian/Edwardian era world with steam technology. A mist has descended on the world and everyone has moved up onto the mountain tops.
The story follows Cass, who lived on the streets after her parents were killed by the mist. She is taken in by the captain of an airship, whose crew dive into the mist to retrieve things to sell. They train Cass as a diver.
The book also follows another character called Theo who is part of a ruling family. He is experimenting with the mist in order to find a way to get rid of it.
I enjoyed this book. I’ve only read one Steampunk novel before so I was really interested in how the world worked.
I believe this book is written for teenagers, but I would say that there is a fair amount of violence. In a way, it feels a bit like a zombie story. There is a hint of romance but nothing overt.
I liked the characters and the whole setup of the story. I enjoyed the suspense. However, I decided not to read it in the evenings before going to bed!
Once or twice I felt like the story skimmed over events that could have been more fleshed out. It’s quite a short book for a fantasy novel.
The world has an equivalent belief system to Christianity, so some of the characters have faith and some do not.
A land shrouded in deadly mist, where the only chance of survival lies above.
Orphaned by the poison mists, Cass has survived on the streets, until she gets the chance of a lifetime to become a diver exploring the lands below the mist. But when tragedy strikes her newfound haven is upended, they take on a job that could change the course of the world as they know it.
Daringly adventurous with wildly imaginative world building, this steampunk fantasy introduces a team of heroes that you can cheer for all the way through. An adventurous first part of a brand new series, Ms. Busse weaves a fantastical world of science and innovation at the same time stagnant with study on the most pressing problem that their people face forbidden. I admired Theo for his passion to find answers and discover the reason for the mist, he has a curious mind, and doesn't shy away from danger.
A fast paced read, with excellent characters, a well crafted plot, and genuine character growth and interaction. I didn't want to put this book down once I started. A high flying steampunk/sci-fi adventure, I couldn't have asked for more, and I can't wait to find out what happens next! Highly recommend!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I'm pretty sure this is a 4, not a 4.5... but I'm not totally sure. This book was preordered for two reasons. Steampunk and one of the prettiest covers I have ever seen. I don't know who designed this cover, but I am so excited to see what the second cover looks like. This is stunning. This is art. If I were the author, I would have this as a poster hanging up in my house. it deserves to be in a book cover museum. The story itself took a little while for me to fully appreciate. I had to get to know the characters before I actually felt myself getting invested. Theo took ,longer to warm up to than Cass. He just wasn't as interesting at first, but his story was important so I'm glad we had his POV. Of course the ending was wicked. Busse knew she needed sales on book two, so she made sure we would all buy it. This book is short and I feel like it maybe could've been turned into a thick standalone... but I also LOVE short books and duologies so I'm not going to complain. I think this is one worth giving a shot.
This is my first read from this author, as well as my first steampunk ever, and I'm glad that I preordered it! The worldbuilding is strong in this one: Busse portrays the world of zeppelins and flying ships and sky islands vividly. I've always felt like steampunk would be my thing (due to watching the Robert Downey, Jr.'s Sherlock Holmes movies, Jules Verne adaptations, Mad Max: Fury Road, and Mortal Engines, etc.), but this confirms it. I like the blend of technology with more classical/Victorian elements.
Character-wise, I'm expecting more development in the next book/s (hopefully it's a trilogy? because I feel like this has a LOT of potential =). I don't feel a whole lot of depth from Cass and Theo (yet). And while they're both easy to sympathize with, they're not drawn so vividly that I feel tremendously close to them.
I also would like to give points for the good morals and values portrayed positively. Captain Gresley is almost like a Captain Hood character, but a good one, and a good leader and father figure to Cass.
The plot is not complex, but this one does end on a cliffhanger ^_^. As for the prose, it's descriptive and easy to follow - not extremely gripping or fast-paced, and I think it suits the story.

Wowowow that was so good!! 🤩😱 Secrets in the Mist was thrilling, unique, suspenseful, intriguing and mysterious, fun, emotional, and SO COOL!!!
I’ve seen some people give this a lesser rating because of the zombie-like people, but honestly I liked it. It lent the story some eerie spookiness without being too scary or gruesome. Also the whole concept with the mist and Plague Wars was so great!
Cass and Theo were both well written MCs and while it took awhile for them to meet, I loved their interactions and budding romance (I say budding because it’s at the beginning stages with a hint of more to come)! I related to some of Cass’ feelings and felt for her, and I really like Theo’s character. 😍
The steampunk, sky-city world this books is set in with the mist covering the earth’s surface and all of the world-building was so cool!
I loved every second of this book and will be diving into the sequel IMMEDIATELY!! 😆🤩 I highly recommend this clean, YA sci-fi/steampunk/dystopian/ book!
